PLANNER USE

11/30/2021

Watch the video above on adding with fraction strips!

Today, students started the day by completing a self/peer-assessment of their use of their planners. This was a pre-assessment to assess how they have been doing with their use of their planners in their learning. We reviewed success criteria on what is required and it made it crystal clear to some students what they needed to improve on for the next couple of months. Parents, please be sure to check your child's planner on a daily basis and to initial it. We will do regular checks of this until reporting time to ensure students are being staying on top of everything.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH UNIT TEST: Likely next Wednesday (FRACTIONS)

INQUIRY SELF-ASSESSMENT

PLANNERS

Today, students viewed an example of how to complete a assessment for their mini inquiry assignments. Then, they completed a self-assessment based on the criteria. Students were able to visualize their strengths and areas for improvement. Then, they uploaded their handouts to FreshGrade and completed their learning reflections. We have been using planners daily since the beginning of the year. At the end of every day, students are instructed to take their planners out to write down the daily planner message. Parents, please check to make sure your child is doing this.
IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS:

Your child should be completing their planners on a daily basis and showing them to you . Parent initials are optional, but encouraged.
Please ensure when your child completes their mathwork (textbook) that they mark their work and do their corrections. Then they can ask question in class the next day so I can clairfy any misunderstandings.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log.

2.) SCIENCE: Lab write-ups due on Friday.

3.) INQUIRY/SOCIAL STUDIES: Complete learning reflections on FreshGrade if you did not finish in class.

5.) CAREER EDUCATION: Show your parents your planner message and have them initial it.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (engaging hook, 2-3 supporting points/examples in the body, and a conclusion that ties everything together.

3.) GIVENS: Check your spelling, capitals, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.
4.) SELF/PEER-ASSESSMENT: Complete a self-assessment based on the above criteria and give one student peer feedback based on the criteria above.
5.) REVISION: Post a revised version based on your self-assessment and add one sentence after your revised version indicating exactly what you changed.
6.) EVALUATION: You will be evaluated on this PAR on FreshGrade tomorrow.

Deep Focus

Today, students were very busy learning. In the morning, they participated in physical and health education with Mr. Fisher while I did Art with Mr. Fisher's class. After recess, students dove deeper into fractions strips and benchmarks before having their mid chapter quiz in math. After lunch, we had a read aloud with, "The Girl Who Could Fly" and then continued to work on our science labs and social studies inquiries.
IMPORTANT:
1.) SOCIAL STUDIES: You will GO PUBLIC with your Mini-presentations within your knowledge building circles will take place tomorrow.

Adding/Subtracting Fractions

Today, students completed learning reflections for their action splatter paintings and played some volleyball. After recess, they reviewed all previous fraction concepts and learned more about adding/subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. In the afternoon, they had their word work pre-test for the week and worked on their inquiry projects.

IMPORTANT:
1.) CLOTHING: With the temperature dropping, please be sure to dress for the weather.

COMPARING FRACTIONS

Today, students learned how to make equivalent fractions by using the LCM of the denominators. They also learned several different strategies they could use in order to compare fractions. We will continue looking at various other strategies tomorrow. Click here if you want a sneak peak at what is to come! Today, you worked collaboratively with your group to show your understanding in how to compare fractions from least to greatest using at least 3 different methods. Most of you used common denominators, number lines, diagrams, and some of you also tried using benchmarks. It was amazing to see the learning taking place when you work productively and collaboratively with your group members.

IMPORTANT:

Today, students continued working on word work. Tomorrow, we will finish off the definitions/parts of speech/sentences so students are ready for their test on Friday. For PE, we again had an olympian beach volleyball player model some good passing techniques that the students practiced in the gym. In the afternoon, we continued working on our ecosystems lab write-ups.

IMPORTANT:
1.) MATH TEST FRIDAY: Improper fractions ->mixed numbers (and vice versa) and simplifying fractions.

Monitor Comprehension

Today, students started the day off by learning how to monitor their comprehension by slowing things down, rereading, checking a dictionary, asking someone, reading for context, etc. Being able to monitor one's comprehension is an important strategy to use when reading text. Later, students learned how to reduce/simplify fractions. In addition to this, they continued working on their science lab write-ups.
IMPORTANT:
1.) READING: All students are expected to complete daily home reading and the post a response assignments on the class website.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes

2.) MATH: Complete 3 simplifying/reduction fractions worksheets

3.) SCIENCE: Complete section 1 of your lab write-up.

3.) EXAMPLES: Be sure to give examples of how you monitor your comprehension in your daily
life when you read or watch shows/movies, etc.

Today, we had incredible weather! The amount of precipitation was amazing! The changing weather patterns shows us that climate change is definitely upon us. We should always think about what we can do for the environment to help take care of it better. Students had their pre-test for Word Work today, learned proper setting technique in PE, learned about converting fractions, and continued their inquiry projects in Social Studies.

Today, students dove into their lab write-ups for their eco-systems projects. They learned how to input their data, put titles on their data, and to display their quantitative observations in detailed graphs. They will input their data into their spreadsheets over the weekend so they are ready to continue working on their lab write-ups on Monday. In the afternoon, they had their final OZOBOT session and completed a bowling challenge. At the end of the day, they had their word work test and a quick lesson on converting fractions.

IMPORTANT:
1.) CATCH-UP: If you are falling behind on your post a response assignments or you are not keeping up with your home reading, please be sure to get caught up.

Today is a day to remember those soldiers who fought for our country so we could have the rights and freedoms we are afforded today. Without them, we may not live in the Canada we know today. Take a moment of silence today and think about how honourable they are for risking their lives to help build a better Canada! Remember, peace is never given, it is earned!

1.) ART: We will be painting tomorrow so be sure to bring an old shirt or old pants you can wear during the lesson. Even if you don't, you may be able to keep the paint off your clothing.

Today, students had an art lesson on Action Splatter Painting. More specifically, a lesson on Jackson Pollock. They learned about who he was and where he came from. They also learned about his most influential work and a little bit about how he created his artwork and how influential he was with his paintings. Later, students learned about math language. They learned about fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. They connected this to the fraction song and dance! It is going to go viral! In the afternoon, they dove a little deeper with robotics and coding. They learned about pause codes and connected their assignment to what they learned about habitats. We learned a little bit about rabbit behaviours in the wild today and used the colour codes to create an Ozobot that acted as if it were a rabbit in the wild. Click here for Ozobot reference codes.

Today, we started the day off with a little community building. Students had the opportunity to share how they are doing, something that they did over the weekend or something going on in their lives. We like to start Mondays off this way so we know how all the students are doing. Later, students completed their learning reflections for their recent math tests. Parents, please be sure to check it out on FreshGrade. In PE, we completed a pre-unit self-assessment. In LA/READING, we learned about visualizations and in Science we started working on our lab write-ups for our ecosystems projects.

Today, students started their word study unit. We started off with a pre-test and the final test will be tomorrow. Typically, pre-tests will be given every Monday morning. Final tests will be every Friday. Students final test evaluations will count towards their overall LA evaluations. Students will typically have one week to complete their word studies. Today, students started their new math unit on fractions. Yesterday, they reviewed the learning intentions for the unit and completed a self-assessment using traffic lights and also providing evidence of their background knowledge in fractions/decimals. Students will revisit this self-assessment at the conclusion of the unit to see how how much they learned! In addition to this, students co-created success criteria for their French useful phrases project and got started on their rough draft and their plans! Once they receive feedback from me, they will be given the green light to begin their final draft!
