When reading any news, it is important to read everything with a critical eye.
This includes finding out who the author is and where the information is coming from.
Why is it important to always find an unbiased opinion on any topic?
Explain in paragraph form and be sure to use any example.

FRIDAY: ELECTRICITY GENERATION

Today, the students learned about different ways that electricity can be produced by generators and turbines. (blurb and Instagram to be updated)

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work
MATH 7: Complete board work (chart) and worksheet 6.2. Your unit test will be on Wednesday.

2.) SCIENCE:

Title page must be finished by Tuesday.
Must include at minimum of 5 pictures that represent different ways that electricity can be generated.
Complete POWER STATIONS pg 87 handout. Use the posted videos to complete the drawings.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose either nuclear power, hydroelectricity, or fossil fuels. (videos)
In paragraph form (using transition words), describe how electricity is created.

WEDNESDAY: Circuit Circus!

Today, the students put their knowledge of circuits, schematics, and theory together and put it to use. They explored the different types of circuits (series and parallel) and learned about the differences between the two.

In addition to this, they also connected up to three bulbs in each type of circuit. They disconnected some to see what effect it would have on the rest of the circuit. They discovered that in a series circuit, all of the bulbs would go out. They learned in a parallel circuit the other bulbs would stay on. They actively learned on their own today and displayed their learning when I came around to assess each of the groups.

When they finished, the students were able to add motors, buzzers, and solar cells to their circuits to make even more complete circuits. The learning that occurred was fun!

Hip hop dancing with a world champion dancer!

Today, students learned about the law of electric charges. They saw a demo that showed them clearly how electrons can be rubbed off of one object and onto another creating both a positively charged object and a negatively charged object respectively.

The law of electric charges states:
1.) Unlike or opposite charges attract.
2.) Like or similar charges repel.

Also, work hard on your social studies projects today. However, don't stay up all night trying to finish it. Most of you have been managing your time wisely so I am confident you will be able to submit it tomorrow. Email me if you have any questions.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: Research projects are due tomorrow! Artifacts are due on Tuesday!

Describe the law of electric charges in your own words.
Be sure to include information about the number of electrons (-ve) and number of protons (+ve) when describing a negatively charged object and a positively charged object.

The Ancient Civilizations project is due this Friday! Be sure to follow the criteria sheet carefully. As Mariko noted today, you must incorporate two separate forms in the presentation of your civilization. For example, you may create a digital presentation and create a model of an artifact from your civilization. Trent is planning on making a pyramid out of sugar cubes! He knows that he must explain one of the theories to also explain how the ancient Egyptians were able to create such a monument using their engineering skills. DUE DATE: May 16th.

Also, be sure to dress appropriately for school. Make good independent decisions regarding how you dress. This applies to everyone - boys and girls!

1.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Continue working on your projects. It is due this Friday!
Follow the criteria sheet carefully! If you want to do well, simply follow the instructions outlined on the criteria sheets.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Think of an item that you use on a regular basis that requires electricity.
Think of the 'PATH' the electricity takes and write how you think the electricity flows through the circuit. Write about how you think the electrons move throughout the circuit using scientific terms.
Be sure to include at least 5 of these terms : path(way), wires, switch, lcd screen, motor, engine, light, L.E.D., battery, source of electricity (AC or DC), resistor, insulator, or any other related term.
For example: I use an L.E.D. flashlight on a regular basis. There must be a wire that connects the battery to the switch and the switch to the L.E.D.. Also, to complete the pathway, the electricity must return to the source. To do this, another wire must go from the other end of the L.E.D. to the other end of the battery. A battery provides a direct current (DC). When the switch is turned on, it becomes a closed circuit and a complete circuit because the electrons can flow freely through the pathway. Battery->wire->Switch->wire->L.E.D.->WIRE->BATTERY

Today, you started learning about electricity and the science of it all. We watched a video and practiced note taking and finding key points. We learned many of the key terms we will need to know for the rest of the unit. Tonight's post a response will test you to see if you retained what you learned today! (It's not really a test but I'd like to see what you learned)

In Socials, many of us are busy working on our Ancient Civilizations projects that are due on Friday! We know that we have to manage our work time at school and at home in order to complete it by Friday.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Complete page 1 and 2 of booklet (INTEGERS).

2.) SOCIALS: Continue working on your projects. It is due on Friday.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In your own words, explain what you learned today in Science. You must include at least 5 or more of the following terms: conductor, insulator, resistor, electrons, atoms, nucleus of atoms, alternating current, direct current, volts, pressure, amps, flow, watts, etc.
Feel free to do additional research for tonight's post a response, however, you must use your own words. If you copy and paste, you will be given an extra assignment tomorrow.

FRIDAY: Happy Mother's Day

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY FROM DIV 4!

The students of Division 4 worked hard over the last few weeks to create a unique Mother's Day gift for their mothers for all the love and care they give them! They wanted something to return their love and kindness with a special gift from the heart. They chose to do this in the form of a mosaic tile mirror and a special YouTube message for their moms! 1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Chapter 4 unit test on Monday. Complete the chapter review and mark at home. Post any
questions you have here.

2.) LA: Peer and self assessments will be completed on Monday once your final edits/revisions have been made. Essays should be basically completed for tomorrow.

3.) SOCIALS: Your research should be completed by tomorrow. You will begin creating your projects tomorrow with your reliable research.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Write a special message for your mothers/grandmothers and tell them how special they are to you!

THURSDAY: PEER/SELF ASSESSMENTS

"Some of us are learners in disguise!" ~Jayden

Today, some of the students participated as leaders in the Fit Kids program. We applaud them for all their handwork and dedication in keeping everyone at Hillcrest physically active!

Many students started giving each other peer feedback on their persuasive essays according to the criteria and checklist. Tomorrow they will do their self-assessments and final edits/revisions before handing in their essays. It has been amazing watching all of your essays improve drastically. Feedback is a key component of your learning and acting on that feedback results in better quality work.

1.) LA:

Persuasive essays should be finished at home so you can complete your peer assessments in class tomorrow.
You will complete your peer/self assessments tomorrow and make your final edit/revisions before handing them in.

2.) SOCIALS:

Your research should be nearly completed (5 sections)
Get as much done for tomorrow as possible. Keep track of your sources for each section.

3.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Pg 182 - 183 Number 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, and 13.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

The majority of you have worked on your essays over the last few weeks and have seen the improvements that you have made. For example, some of you started off with one long paragraph and now have a properly structured 5 paragraph essay.
Explain how the feedback you received help you improve your essays and indicate at least 3 specific areas of your essay that you improved in and how you did that.
For example: structure, grammar, supporting sentences, examples, research, topic sentences, introduction, conclusion, transitions, etc.
Don't forget to explain specifically how you improved in each area.

WEDNESDAY: Ancient Civilizations

Today, students continued fine-tuning their research skills. They set their daily goals and took the steps to achieve them. At the end of Socials class, they reflected on what they had accomplished and completed the daily goal check survey.

In Language Arts, students continued working on their learning. They continued to receive teacher feedback and worked on making the necessary edits/revisions to improve their writing. Students are aware of how they benefit from feedback and acting on the feedback they receive.

1.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Continue researching. The deadline is nearing. You should set a goal of completing all of your research by the weekend.
Monday - Wednesday of next week will be when you use all of your research and put it together into a presentation after you have made edits/revisions to your work.
Copy and Pasting will not be tolerated.

2.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: Complete board work questions.

3.) LA: Continue making edits/revisions. Don't forget to add a really good clincher to end off your essay (concluding paragraph). E-mail me if you would like me to give you more feedback.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Eating healthy and exercising on a daily basis is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle.
What strategies do you use at home, at school, and when you're out and about to stay healthy?
For example:

When I go to the grocery store, I try to avoid buying snacks that have high sugar, salt , and
calories. I find that being aware of the nutritional facts on each product help me make a wise
decision as to what I will purchase, eat, and feed to my daughter. Also, I try my best to avoid
eating fast food too often. In addition to this, I exercise on a regular basis and track my progress
using the Nike Plus app. It allows me track my the distance I run, the time it takes me, calories
burned, and it also plays my running route out on a GPS map that shows my pace and elevation.
In addition to this, I can create friendly challenges with my friends from anywhere in the world.
These strategies help me stay as healthy as possible.

Ask at least one student a question and respond to any questions given to you.
