MATTED ABC COLLAGES

Today, we continued learning more about the game of tennis with Tennis BC. Afterwards, you received your new novels and planned out a schedule with your book club groups. Remember, you need to make sure you complete the daily work in order to be prepared for each of your book club meetings. In the afternoon, we learned how to measure precise and accurate borders to mat/frame our ABC photos. Make sure you show your parents your splatter paintings you took home today.

1.) MATH: Any unfinished work from over the weekend. Check the post from the weekend.

2.) ART:

Watch this video on 'REPLACING A COLOUR' in Pixlr.
A copy of your pencil version should be uploaded here.
Upload a copy of your fine-lined image here.
Remember, you should be saving your images on your Google Drives as well! Don't forget to do this!
Paint/Colour your image using Pixlr.com and upload that version here.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Kindness is something that we should all show to one another. I believe we have completed a similar PAR in this year, but it is something we should all reflect on regularly.
Watch this video and post a paragraph about how you think kindness can help make the world a better place.
Include at least 2 supporting points and provide examples of each. Don't forget to include a hook and a conclusion.
Self-assess for the givens (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, capitals, punctuation, etc).
Post an edited/revised version as a reply to your original version. (If everyone completes this part, there will be a special surprise in class tomorrow).

Pencil to Pixels Coming to Life

After working hard on your Novel Approach work, we got down to business and reviewed criteria for your pencil to pixels assignment. Our goal is to submit your final Andy Warhol inspired collage this coming Friday.

On Monday, you will be framing your ABC photo collages and putting them on display in the hallway. Soon after, you will be able to take it home to show your parents how you used your photo taking skills to create your collages.

Today, we reviewed how to give good feedback. You learned how to assess your peer's work against criteria (rubric). In addition to this, you learned to give specific feedback to help your friend improve his/her writing. Remember, verbal doggie biscuits don't push your learning forward! Each of you worked hard on reading and assessing your partner's work. This will all of you improve your responses that are due tomorrow.

1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Due tomorrow: Final draft of your gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and powerful responses.
Complete your final edits/revisions based on the peer assessment you received today.
To do well, you must follow the success criteria.

Powerful Responses

Today, we reviewed the criteria/rubrics for the gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and the powerful response. An updated version can be accessed below or on our criteria/handouts page. Follow the criteria closely and it will lead you to success! It is crunch time and you will be spending a great deal of time this week writing, giving feedback to your peers, receiving feedback from your peers and teacher, and responding to the suggestions by making improvements to your work. This is an instrumental part of the learning process! Over the next few days, make sure you act on the feedback you are provided with.

IMPORTANT: Return your Gr. 7 Celebration forms and your money if you haven't already done so.

Tennis BC

Today, we started the day off with tennis lesson by Tennis BC. The head instructor is the coach of the UBC tennis team. You learned some basic tennis skills from balancing a ball, bouncing a ball, and proper forehand and backhand grips. Tennis requires a balance of concentration, strength, and agility. NOVEL APPROACH BOOK CLUBS

Did any of you run the Sun Run?

Mr. Fisher and I were happy to see all of the book clubs running smoothly. Even groups that experienced road blocks in previous discussions were able to learn from what worked and what didn't work to effectively learn from one another through group discussions. We are looking forward to helping you with your powerful responses next week. We will start them on Monday and submit them on Friday.

PENCIL TO PIXELS FOLDER

1.) MATH DIV 2: Any work assigned by Mr. Fisher
MATH DIV 1: Complete at least 3 of the plotting pictures worksheets.

2.) ART:

Complete your third draft of your self-portrait in the manga/anime style. This is due tomorrow.
Remember, follow the steps from the online resources and your drawing will turn out really well. If you do not follow the steps, it is likely your drawing will not turn out as expected.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Using your 'voice', describe in a paragraph how you felt when you saw the beautiful weather outside this morning.
Include any personal connections, inferences, etc.

Can you guess who drew these?

Today, we the students started their pencil to pixel assignments. They started by learning how to draw a simply anime/manga style self-portrait of themselves. Before we started, some students were heard saying, "I'm not good at drawing!" By the end of the lesson, every single student had drawn amazing self-portraits in the learned style. I was happy to see what they were able to do with simple step-by-step instructions. Tomorrow, the students will get more time to practice drawing by using different facial expressions, eyes, eyebrows, lips, ears, and hair. I'm looking forward to seeing their creations! If we have time, we may convert their pencil drawings to pixels tomorrow!

Go to Google images and find different facial features/expressions to help you along. Key words: anime noses, anime eyes, etc.
Take a photo of your picture and upload it to your Google Drive.

Novel Approach Book Clubs

Today, we reviewed the 3 different transformations you have been learning about in Math. Each of you checked your understanding with Mr. Hong or Mrs. Navin. We are confident you all understand how to complete rotations. Tomorrow, you will be quizzed on translations, reflections, and rotations. Review your work and watch the review videos that have been posted over the last two weeks. In addition to this, we started working with our 'MA FAMILLE' groups to practice introducing our family members and interesting things about them.

Stay on schedule and keep up with your booklets, readings, and visible thinking.

Transformations

Today, you learned a second strategy for rotations. Using tracing paper really helps visualize the new image after you have completed any transformation. Today, it helped you visualize where your image would be after you completed a rotation. Review the posted video so you fully understand the three transformations we have covered in class.

1.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Be prepared for your 3rd book club discussion tomorrow.
Things you need to have:

1.) Readings must be completed
2.) Booklet must be complete
3.) Visible thinking

1.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph form, explain the difference between the different transformations we have learned in class. (translations, reflections, and rotations).
Your paragraph should include certain mathematical terms that are required for two of the transformations.

Everyone has been working hard on their reading activities for the Novel Approach. Mr. Fisher and I are happy to see that you are using your reading strategies to help you better understand your stories. In addition to this, you have all been collaborating really well with one another during your book clubs. Keep up the good work! Tuesday will be your next book club session!

1.) MATH: Complete pg 293-295 of textbook if you haven't completed it yet.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete readings, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions so you are prepared for your next book club discussion.
Do not leave this until Monday night. If you do, you will not be prepared for your book club discussion on Tuesday.
Manage your time wisely. Divide your work up so you do a little today, a little tomorrow, and the rest on Monday.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

The end of the year is fast approaching. Many of you are looking forward to going to high school.
In paragraph form, write about 2 things you are looking forward to and 2 things you will miss next year.

R2R International Film Festival For Youth

R2R International Film Festival for Youth

Today, we spent the day at the Roundhouse Community Centre participating in the R2R International Film Festival for Youth. Each film you saw was powerful and had deep meanings. You were lucky to be part of a Q & A session with Andy Alvarez. In addition to this, you participated in a film making workshop where you collaborated and created short films with your groups. We were all impressed with what you all created.

1.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Be prepared for book club meeting #2.
You are accountable to your entire group.
Complete the assigned readings, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose one of the short films you saw today and write a powerful response paragraph about the 'BIG IDEA'.
Include your background knowledge and connections, inferences, visualizations, etc.
Your powerful response paragraph must include an intro, supporting sentences, and a conclusion.
You must clearly explain what you think the big idea is and why you think this.
Think deeply about the films and ask yourself why the film maker made the movies. For example, what was the deep meaning about the Finnish boy and how he stole food? What was the significance of the marbles? Why did the boy say 'There was a lot of empty space' when he went to his father's funeral? Why did the girl hate Canada?
Edit and revise your post for the givens.

Executive Functioning Skills

Today, you met in your book club groups and came up with a plan. More specifically, you decided as a group to chunk your workload into manageable sections. It is your responsibility to complete your daily work according to that schedule. If you do not, your entire group will not be able to move forward. Tomorrow, you will meet with your group to discuss your visible thinking, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions. Make sure you are prepared for each of your book club discussions.

2.) LANGUAGE ARTS:

Tomorrow is your first book club meeting. Make sure you have read the required readings and completed the required pages in your booklets.
Feel free to write your visible thinking on stickies, in your booklets, lined paper, or a separate Google Doc.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about executive functioning with Mrs. Navin.
You participated in an activity related to the Novel Approach. You all drew pictures of the things you need in order to be prepared for your first book club session.
Put your 'FUTURE GLASSES' on again tonight.
What types of things do you need to prepare to come to school every morning?
Go to Google Drive and click on 'NEW' ---> 'MORE' ---> 'GOOGLE DRAWINGS'. Draw a picture of the items you need to be ready to learn tomorrow morning.
Post a 'SHARED LINK' here of the picture. Make sure you it has 'view only' access. To do this, click on 'SHARE' in the right corner and then click on 'GET SHAREABLE LINK'.
If you have trouble doing this, post your questions here.
Remember, your drawing does not have to be professional. Quickly doodle/draw a picture to share with the class. You are also welcome to add pictures to your image.

Novel Approach

You must be accountable to your group!

All student received their first novels and their packages for the Novel Approach today. You will be responsible for keeping up with the assigned work in order for your book clubs to run smoothly. You will engage in your first book clubs tomorrow. Today, Mr. Fisher, Mrs. Navin, and I simply want you to start reading. Read for about 30 minutes so you have an idea of what your book is going to be about. Your blogging assignments will begin tomorrow after we go over the criteria together in class.

1.) MATH:

Complete 7.2 worksheet and pg 288 #1-11 if you didn't complete this in class.
You must plot points on your grid handout to show your work.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Read for 30 minutes and start working through your packages.
You may write your VISIBLE THINKING on stickies, in your booklets beside your gift of words, on lined paper, or on a Google Doc.
Tomorrow, you will meet with your groups to plan out your schedule.
We will review criteria for your gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and blogging tomorrow before you start working.
