HAPPY SPRING BREAK

3/19/2018

I hope all of you enjoy spending time with your families over spring break. There will be no homework over the break other than reading for 30 minutes on a daily basis , the PAR, and some Freshgrade updates. Read details below

I will present students with their success certificates on the Tuesday you return after Easter Monday. Unfortunately, I forgot to hand these out on Friday.

1.) LANGUAGE ARTS / NOVEL APPROACH:

Read for 30 minutes a day and focus on using your reading strategies from the Novel Approach.
Your powerful response assessments will be posted over the next two weeks.

2.) MATH:

Your math tests will be posted on FreshGrade over the next few days.

3.) ART:

If you haven't already done so, update the final draft folder with your best ABC photo collage. I would like to have these printed out over the next week so please update the folder.
Also, be sure to update FreshGrade by uploading a copy of your best collage that you would like to be assessed.
Feel free to update the folder with another draft if you feel you can create a better one.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

How did you spend your spring break?
What did you do for fun?
What activities did you do to keep yourself busy?
Did you devote time to your family? Hobbies? Sports? Crafts?

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

Today was a busy day of learning. We started the day with some community building and our P.A.R. review. It was fun to hear the integer lyrics that everyone came up with yesterday. Afterwards, we learned some new French vocabulary and basic phrases. We spent a good amount of time today on learning how to use the order of operations (BEDMAS/PEDMAS). You have a PAR holiday today, so use your time wisely so you are prepared for tomorrow. Feel free to bring a game or something to play with for games day tomorrow.

POWERFUL RESPONSE DRAFT #2

Today, you worked hard on various learning activities. We started the day with a physical education assessment of your basketball skills and knowledge. Later on, you worked on completing your self-assessments and edits/revisions to your first draft of your powerful response. Your second draft is due tomorrow. Be sure that you have this ready for another peer to give you feedback in class tomorrow. We will be working with the students from Mr. Fisher's class.

POWERFUL RESPONSE DRAFT 1

Residential Schools

Today, Mr. Fisher and I read the 'I am Not a Number' to you in the library. We learned more about how poorly the indigenous people of Canada were treated. We learned that the last residential school closed in 1996. Many of us were able to connect to 'When I was Eight' and 'Not My Girl'. Imagine if you were taken from your family and put into a school where you were basically treated like a prisoner. How would this make you feel? Imagine how the 150,000+ children felt when they were stolen from their families and forced into these schools. As Mr. Fisher mentioned in class, this was a very 'HEAVY' topic.

Today, we started our poetry unit by creating some fun and easy acrostic poems.
For your PAR today, write a new acrostic poem using the title of one of the books we have read in class. Choose 'When I was Eight', 'Not My Girl, or 'I am Not a Number'.
Watch this video to review some of the things you learned today.
The underlying themes should be 'RECONCILIATION'. This is a heavy topic, but a necessary one.

C-CHART FOR BOOK CLUBS

Hello! I hope all of you had a nice weekend. I hope you enjoyed your day with Mr. McPherson. I will be back at school tomorrow. Please complete any work you are behind on and any assigned work from class today. Tomorrow, you will have your science test and a quick math quiz on subtracting with integer chips and number lines. Review if necessary. I am happy to hear you completed your Novel Approach graphic organizers today. We will begin the powerful responses tomorrow.

LANGARA TRAIL WALK/RUN

Langara Trail Walk/Run

Today, we started the day off with Fitness Friday and we followed it up with a run/walk around the Langara golf course. The photo to the left shows our exact route. Our route was 2.8km in length and it took us approximately 29 minutes and 45 seconds to complete. Or average pace was 10:31 seconds per kilometre. Our average speed was 5.7 km an hour and our maximum speed was 11.5 km an hour. It was nice to see the weather improve today. With the weather improving, we are looking forward to spending more time outdoors improving our physical health.

REQUIREMENTS: Your short story must clearly describe the setting and plot (intro/exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution) clearly.

A STUDENT CREATION

Thank you to all students and parents who came in for the conferences today. I was happy to see all of you following the success criteria we set in class for the format of our meetings. In addition to this, I was pleased to hear you all showing pride in your work when you showcased your learning tags to your parents. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the parents tomorrow!

Create a simple electric motor

Today, you organized your learning tags and assessment folders to prepare for your conferences over the next few days. You also continued your electromagnet motor challenges from last week. It was amazing to see everyone engaged in their learning today. Click here to see a video of one of the successful creations. Students tried different things and most of you were able to get your motor running using your solenoid and the the other materials.

Stephanie's ABC Collage

Today, we started working on our second picture books. This time, you are lucky to be able to learn side by side with the students from Division 1. We all worked on building our communication and collaboration skills by working in pairs. It was amazing for Mr. Fisher, Mrs. Navin, and I to join in on and listen to the wonderful conversations that were taking place. It was exciting to see so many students applying their reading strategies in their discussions.

1.) ART:

A few students still need to upload their first DRAFT 1.
Upload an improved version to the DRAFT 2 folder. The improvements should be based on a self-assessment of the criteria handout and the feedback you received in class from me. This draft should show that you used different editing functions while still using the same alphabet photos.

2.) MATH: No HW

Today, you worked on your 'LEARNING TAGS' so you are prepared for the student led conferences on Wednesday and Thursday.
Post WHAT you plan on showing your parents this week based on these tags:

Mind full or mindful?

Today, you worked hard in class and the majority of you completed your Novel Approach work. On Monday, you will be working with the Division 1 students and teaching them how the gift of words, thinking and learning questions, powerful responses, and book clubs work. This will help you build your ability to learn from others through collaboration and communication.

1.) LANGUAGE ARTS:

If you didn't upload a shared link to FreshGrade on Friday, be sure to do this.
Update FreshGrade with an image of your February reading calendar. Bring your calendar to school on Monday.

2.) ART:

I am happy to see 20 collages in the DRAFT 1 folder. We are still waiting for 8 students to upload their first drafts. This should be completed even if you don't have all 26 of your photos.
Upload an improved version to the DRAFT 2 folder. The improvements should be based on a self-assessment of the criteria handout and the feedback you received in class from me.
I am looking forward to seeing the improvements!

3.) MATH:

Complete pg 260 #1-8
Complete 2 worksheets (1 is double sided)

We reviewed mindfulness and self-regulation strategies this week and built action criteria around it.

GETTING OUR Z

Yesterday, we created action criteria together for being more mindful and self-regulated. We started the day by practicing our 'MINDFUL MORNING'. We reviewed the criteria and listened to some calming nature sounds and engaged in personal self-regulation activities. Later, the entire school packed into our gym to participate in ZUMBA! It was a fun and exciting morning for everyone involved! We appreciate the instructors who worked hard to teach us their dance moves!

Your Novel Approach assessment is due tomorrow.
This includes your gift of words, thinking and learning questions, powerful response, picture book with stickies, and picture book booklets.
Your powerful response must have gone through the self-assessment and peer assessment. If for some reason you were unable to have a classmate give you feedback based on the criteria, ask a parent or sibling to give you feedback tonight.

2.) ALPHABET PHOTOGRAPHY:

Play around with Picmonkey.com or any online collage creator and upload an image of it by clicking here. Your collage should be named your name. If someone else in the class has your first name, use a nickname like 'K-Dub'.

3.) MATH:

Complete the 6.4 worksheet. Do not complete 6.5
Short quiz on adding integers with number lines and integer chips tomorrow.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

For each of the following activities, list 2 things that are 'EXPECTED' of your behaviour:

3.) Transitions between subjects.
