Winter Holiday Homework

12/29/2011

1.) LA - Read the remainder of HATCHET (including the epilogue). Complete QWILS for each chapter and the epilogue.
2.) SCIENCE - Enjoy your holidays. We will complete the editing/peer assessments in January!
3.) School supplies - Bring all your supplies and a pair of inside shoes to keep in the classroom.
3.) Post a holiday message for your classmates!
4.) Enjoy the rest of your holidays!

1.) Science
- All of your research should be completed.
- Continue making your edits/revisions. DON'T FORGET TO ADD TRANSITION WORDS - refer to the handout in your google docs.
- Make sure you have given your group members good feedback according to the criteria set out in yesterday's planner message.
- Create another peer feedback page for the '6 Characteristics of Minerals' Section
- Read through each of your group members pages and give them good feedback.
- Give as many details as possible to help your classmates improve on their work.
- Tell them what information they should add, what they're missing, and also comment on their spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitals, etc.

For example:
Hardness
- You had a lot of great research on your page but you should probably include a table or image of Moh's Scale to show some examples.
- You need to correct your spelling and punctuation in your first sentence.

2.) Bring a plastic bag/garbage bag to school tomorrow to take your school supplies home.

3.) SNACKS/DRINKS - Feel free to bring some snacks/drinks to share with the class tomorrow afternoon.

4.) Post a message: Tomorrow will be Edward's final day at Hillcrest as he will be moving to California! I know you will all miss him!

1.) Science (Peer feedback)
- Create a new blog entry under your Science reflections and call it 'THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH'
- You must give a minimum of one suggestion for each section (Mantle, Crust, Inner Core, Outer Core) and one positive comment for each section. If you take a look at any of Athena's comments, you will see that she follows a similar pattern. Remember that you must be very specific in what you tell your group members.

For example:
Crust
- I noticed that you did not include information about how wide the crust is. You might want to do some more research and include this information.
- I didn't read any information about the composition of the crust ( What it is made of). I suggest that you include this information.
- The overall look of your 'CRUST' page looks great and you used relevant and specific pictures and videos.

***Then do the same for the other 3 layers.***
*** If you tell someone they have spelling errors, give them examples ***

2.) Post a message: What did you enjoy about the field trip to the Walnut Grove Swimming Pool?

12/13/2011

1.) Science
- I decided not to have you create your 3rd reflection post. We will do this in class tomorrow. However, make sure you complete the reflections/feedback for Transform and Divergent boundaries for all members of your group (Post #2). Give your group members feedback according to the criteria discussed in class.
- Most students have already completed their final section of their research. If you haven't, make sure it is completed for tomorrow.
2.) FIELD TRIP - Bring your bathing suit, towel, etc. Parent drivers should be at school at no later than 12:20pm. We will leave Hillcrest promptly at 12:30pm.
3.) Toonie Drive - Bring your donations.
4.) Post a comment: What are 5 things you must look for when assessing and giving feedback to your peers? (BE SPECIFIC - Read Mr. Hong's first comment before you write your reply)

1.) Science
- Complete peer assessments for 'Rock Cycle' and 'Theory of Plate Tectonics' sections. You must give feedback according to the criteria given in class. Give feedback to everyone in your group.
- Pay attention to spelling, capitals, grammar, etc.
- You need to include at least 3 suggestions (CONTENT)
2.) Math - Complete plotting booklet if you haven't already done so.
3.) Field Trip - Forms, money, and drivers. These must be handed in to our classroom volunteer.
4.) Reindeer Games - Bring a t-shirt that represents your team colour!
5.) Post a comment: How will peer feedback/assessment help you in your learning?

1.) Science - Transform Boundary section must be completed by Monday. Remember to focus on the content of your website rather than the presentation of it. Be sure to have one of your parents or an older sibling help you proofread your written work to ensure that it all makes sense (spelling, capitals, punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, etc)
2.) LA (HATCHET) - Complete the remainder of Chapter 16. One QWIL grid and 2 deep questions/connections (stickies).
3.) FIELD TRIP FORMS - These must be handed into our parent volunteer on Monday morning.
4.) Reindeer Games - Bring your t-shirts (team colours) to school on Monday so you don't forget to bring it on Tuesday.
5.) Post a message in today's planner message: What is the difference between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries? Explain using details/examples.

THURSDAY

12/8/2011

1.) SCIENCE - Complete 'Divergent Boundary' research. Remember, you are limited in the amount of information you were able to obtain from the science textbook, so you must go online and do some research for at least one more reliable source of information. Don't forget to list this in your sources/bibliography. I expect this section to be completed for tomorrow.
2.) Field Trip - Our parent volunteer will collect your swimming forms and money. Please do your best to bring both to school tomorrow!
3.) Post one thing you learned about Divergent boundaries from your textbook and also list one thing you learned from your online research. Be sure to provide details!

12/7/2011

1.) SCIENCE - Complete your research and post it to your website - Convergent Boundary (Oceanic-Continental Convergence, Oceanic-Oceanic Boundary, Continental Convergence). You should include all of your research on one single page of your website and not 3 separate pages. The majority of you completed your research (rough draft) in class today using the textbooks as your sources. Remember, you must also go online and find additional reliable sources of information. The textbooks are not as current as some of the information that you can find online. New technology often leads to new discoveries and so you must do your best to find the most current information.
2.) HAMPER ITEMS - I am begging all of you to bring at least one hamper item tomorrow!
3.) Check your e-mail and google documents in case I share files with you.
4.) Post one important piece of information that you found today about Convergent Boundaries. Be sure to provide details about what you learned! I would like to see everyone post something different.

1.) Science - Have your parents or your older brother/sister help you edit your written work so that it is more in lines with the criteria given in class. Remember, everything MUST be in your own words and you must use proper grammar, spelling, capitals, punctuation, etc. Go through each of your pages one by one and make your edits/revisions.
2.) Art - Bring some holiday decorations to make your wreaths look festive!
3.) What are the 7 different plates? (POST UNDER THIS MESSAGE).

1.) Science - Complete your intro to 'THE THEORY OF PLATE TECTONICS' page using the handout that you were given in class today. Make sure you highlight the sections that you complete on your handout. Remember - FOCUS ON CONTENT AND NOT THE PRESENTATION OF YOUR RESEARCH! If you have a question, feel free to post it here and one of your classmates will post a reply. 2.) ART - You must bring 2 wire coat hangers to school tomorrow. Bring some pine, cedar, or any other branch you want to use. Also, if you want to bring in ornaments or other holiday decorations, feel free to do so.

FRIDAY

12/3/2011

1.) Science - Work on your research for your websites. If you find information that you feel is important and relevant to one of your sections, feel free to add it.
- BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND ALL RESEARCH MUST BE COMPLETED BY MONDAY MORNING.
- Once your research is complete, you can work on the presentation of your websites. Remember, the content/research and putting it into your own words is the most important aspect of your work.
- Use images that are specific to your sections. For example, if you have an image that includes all 4 layers of the Earth and it is placed in your section for 'THE CRUST', look for a different image that only highlights 'THE CRUST'.
2.) Language Arts - Read the next chapter and complete one grid on your QWIL sheet. (Read the last 3 pages of Ch. 13 and read all of Ch.14). Chapter 14 is fairly short and will not take you too long. Feel free to add your connections/deep questions with stickies. NO BLOG ASSIGNMENT! :)
3.) HAMPER DONATIONS - PLEASE BRING IN YOUR HAMPER ITEMS!
4.) ART - Please bring your coat hangers and any decorations that you want to put on your decorative wreaths that we will be making as part of our holiday art.

1.) SCIENCE - There are no new sections to add to your learning journals at this time. If your websites aren't up to date, make sure you get caught up. Please complete one peer assessment sheet for tomorrow. You must assess your, "READING BUDDY'S" website.
- Although it is not included on your assessment sheets, please ensure that compaction, cementation, and are listed under sedimentary rock.
- Please visit this website to learn more about each stage of the Rock Cycle.
2.) ART - Bring 2 wire coat hangers and some small Christmas decorations to school. You will use them to decorate your Christmas wreaths. We will do this art activity some time next week.
3.) HAMPER ITEMS - Bring your donations!
