Jackson Pollock Action Painting

Today, we worked on our 'Feather, Fur, and Fin' stop motion presentation that we will be performing in front of the school next month. I will post what we have created later this weekend. Everyone is expected to take at least 50 pictures just like we did on Friday that has a message associated with it. It must be related to the lyrics of the song.

IMPORTANT: Share your stop motion videos with me directly and on the PAR this weekend.

1.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Continue researching using your criteria sheet at the steps outlined on your handouts.
You must share your research documents with me on Google Docs so I can keep track of your ongoing work.
If you have any questions along the way, feel free to email me directly.

2.) LANGUAGE ARTS / NOVEL APPROACH:

If you were one of the students who decided to take your picture books and packages home this weekend, feel free to work on your gift of words and thinking and learning questions.
Post any questions you have here.

3.) ART/PHOTOGRAPHY:

Share your folders with me and take all of your photos this weekend. You can take them anywhere. When you're out on a walk, at a restaurant, mall, at home, in your yard, etc.

Share your stop motion videos with everyone on today's blog if you are able to complete one. We need everyone's contribution!

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

You have a fair bit of work this weekend so you have a post a response holiday. Simply use it to communicate with your classmates and to ask questions about th homework.

NOVEL APPROACH

Today, students started working on their second round of picture books for the Novel Approach. They learned about the gradual release of responsibility and are working well independently by following the action criteria chart for independent work time. They will be meeting on a daily basis with their groups in their book clubs to discuss and learn from one another. After they complete their book clubs, they will move on to novels.

1.) MATH: Quiz tomorrow on describing translations and reflections.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

You must hand in your powerful response tomorrow.
Make sure you make your final edits/revisions.
Ask a family member to read it over for you.
Email me directly if you require more feedback.

3.) SOCIAL STUDIES: Continue your research and you must share your document with me on Drive.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Post some kind and supportive words for your classmates.

Today, all students had an opportunity to make paper kites and to fly them outside. Click here to see a quick video of all of you haveing fun and being kids. This was amazing to see, especially because the fun didn't include a screen in front of the students. Keep having fun outside and enjoy learning!

1.) Continue working on your Social Studies project.
2.) Use your criteria sheet and follow it closely. If you follow the success criteria and rubric, you will be successful in your learning!
3.) We are in the research phased of the project. We are not yet in the creation phase. You must complete your research before I allow anyone to start on their physical projects.
4.) Base all your reliable research on the C.R.A.A.P. test.
5.) Copy and paste any reliable research you find, but then you must reply to your original post with a summarized version in your own words. If this is unclear, make sure you ask questions in class or on the blog.
6.) You must keep track of your sources by replying to your original thread on today's blog. DO NOT CREATE NEW THREADS. Your thread is for your research. Another thread is for your classmate's research.

STOP MOTION RECYCLING VIDEO

Today, students worked on their creative kite designs. They drew, coloured, and fine-lined their creations onto their kite papers. Tomorrow morning, they will work in the gym with our guest kite maker to make kites that they will later fly outside.

Click on the picture to the left and watch this stop motion recycling video. Tonight's PAR is related.

1.) MATH: Complete any unfinished work from yesterday (3 worksheets)

2.) NOVEL APPROACH: You must hand in 3 gift of words and 2 thinking and learning questions tomorrow at the latest.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video.
CHALLENGE: See if you can take 30-50 or so photos to create something like this video.
Here are the lyrics to Feather, Fur and Fin. See if your stop motion pictures can represent some of the lyrics from the video.
Try to create a video using iMovie or Movie maker. You can also download a stop motion apps, to do it as well.
You are basically creating a slideshow of all the photos. The photos should obviously be put in order to show you and something you are doing to help the environment. Feel free to create a video of you taking the recycling outside, composting, etc.
This can be related to the 3 R's - Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
If you are able to, upload your images and movie to Google Drive and share the link with your classmates on tonight's PAR.

RESEARCH SKILLS - SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON

I assume you have been well behaved for Mrs. Waddell today. I look forward to hearing positive things from her in regards to how your day went today. I will update the website with your homework later today. Assume that anything you didn't finish in class today needs to be completed for homework.

For Social studies today, I want you to do the following independently:

After you have received your iPad from the cart or are using your own device, follow these instructions:

1.) For the ancient civilization you researched on the PAR last week on technology/inventions/innovations, research the following items on the topic of 'LAWS':

one YouTube link
one Wikipedia link
one other link (website, images, infographic, etc).

2.) Provide a reliable link for each of the above items.

3.) Provide one reason why you think it is a reliable link based on the C.R.A.A.P. test.

4.) Provide a short paragraph for each link summarizing what you learned. Don't forget to use your reading strategies. Include 3-5 interesting points for each link.

5.) Post it all here. If you don't finish in class, complete this for your PAR.

6.) If you have any questions, post them here.

7.) Reread the instructions above to make sure you have completed everything that has been asked.

Alphabet Photography

Today, you started your track rotations. Track and Field is one of the oldest sports and it goes back to ancient times. Click here to read a little bit about it. Also, this website has quite a few resources on 'ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS' if you look along the left side of the screen. This may be one of the sources you use to research your ancient civilization. Where do you think track and field originated from? Were men and women allowed to compete? Why or why not? Do you think this was fair? Did it promote equality? Feel free to post your response on this weekend's PAR.

HAWAIIAN DAY

Tomorrow is Hawaiian day. Dress up in your best aloha shirt, shorts, and flip flops! Perhaps Mr. Hong will bring his surf board?!?!??!

We have about 2 months left in the school year. You have all become very good learners and know the importance of learning intentions, criteria, good questions, self/peer assessments, feedback, and ownership. We will be learning lots from now until the end of the year! Keep working hard!

1.) MATH:

Complete pg 293 - 294 Questions #1-6. You must show your work and use your grids.
Mark all answers using the back of your textbook.
Complete corrections and we will review it in class tomorrow morning.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

You completed a self-assessment in class today and learned what areas you could improve in.
Based on your self-assessment and any peer and teacher feedback you receive tonight, make your final edits/revisions/additions/changes to your powerful response.
If you have any questions, please post them here.
Have a parent or older sibling proofread your work and give you more feedback to improve.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you brainstormed questions, ideas, and thoughts about what goes into creating a civilization. Click here to review what you and your classmates came up with.
Post the ancient civilization you are most interested in learning about.
In addition to this, do some research and IN YOUR OWN WORDS, post 2-4 interesting facts about 3 of the items listed below for the ancient civilization you want to learn about.

Ancient Civilizations

Today, students saw trailers of different documentaries to give them some ideas of what they could possibly learn about. They will be embarking on an inquiry into ancient civilizations over the next month or so. They will research different aspects of their chosen civilizations that they feel helped build each of them. After reading Weslandia, the students brainstormed what they could research and these items included religion, government, laws, schools, economies, agriculture, food, and culture to list a few. Tomorrow, they will review the rubric for their assignment so they know exactly what is expected of them.
1.) MATH:

Complete pg 288 - 289 #1-5 and 7-11.
Show all your work.
Check your answers with the answer key from the back of the textbook.
Complete your corrections.

2.) NOVEL APPROACH:

Give your other group members descriptive feedback on their powerful responses directly on their Google Documents. The feedback you give them should be based on the criteria sheet.
Make edits/revisions based on the feedback you receive.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

We listed several ancient civilizations you could choose for your projects. (China, Rome, Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India). If you prefer to research one not listed, feel free to talk to me about it.
Find 3 interesting innovations/inventions that one of these civilizations is responsible for. This can be a website, YouTube link, National Geographic Link, Discovery education link, etc.
Provide your reliable source links.
Explain what each invention is and how it has affected our lives today.

A former student's picture

Today, students learned a few new photography skills and got to practice using them on the playground. Tomorrow, they will officially begin their Alphabet Photography assignments. Click here to see an example of what they will be creating. Check out PicMonkey and Pixlr to see if you can create something like the image to the left that my former student made. She made it look like she was standing one the Eiffel tower. Upload your image to Google Drive and post a shared link to today's PAR. WILL ANYONE ACCEPT AND COMPLETE THIS CHALLENGE?

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Work on your powerful responses for your picture books.
You must give at least one person from your picture book group feedback on their Google Documents. If you haven't shared it with your group members yet, be sure to do this today.
Use your self/peer assessment sheet to make sure you are giving appropriate feedback to your peers.
Do a self-assessment according to the criteria sheet to make sure you have included everything required.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

You have learned about rule of thirds, leading lines, and filling the space.
Take some photos around your room and outside to add to your alphabet pics.
Upload these photos to your shared Google folder so you can see your photo taking skills develop from now until we complete this unit. If you haven't shared it with me and you partner yet, be sure to do so. Call this 'YOUR NAME'S ALPHABET PHOTOGRAPHY'.
Remember, only take letters that are naturally occurring and not posed.
Post a shared link to your best alphabet photo that you have taken so far. (SHARED LINK FROM GOOGLE DRIVE)
Post your link here and comment on at least 3 photos that have been posted. Comment on the 3 skills you learned that were mentioned above.
Also, comment on what you think of the image. What did you like? What was interesting? What could be improved?

Happy Easter! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays! The website is finally working. It seems as though Weebly has been having technical difficulties over the long weekend. See you all bright and early tomorrow! I'm looking forward to having a fun and exciting week of learning with all of you! If you have digital camera or mobile device with a camera, feel free to bring it to school tomorrow for art (digital photography). Keep in mind, this is not required and is your responsibility to take care of your technology.

1.) MATH:

Complete 3 plot the points to create a picture handouts.

Here is a list of more coordinate grid video games for you to practice. They will all help you become more comfortable with the 4 quadrants of the Cartesian Grid.

2.) Novel Approach:

Share your picture book powerful response with two people in your group.
Give them feedback based on your peer assessment sheet and criteria handout. Do this directly on their Google Doc using 'COMMENTS'.
Make your edits/revisions based on the descriptive feedback you receive.
If for some reason, you don't receive any comments, simply do a self-assessment using your self-assessment handout and make edits/revisions.
Respond to all feedback received from peers and teachers.
If you haven't completed the below Novel Approach assignment, be sure to do it.

Self-Regulated Learners

Today, students continued working on their powerful responses for their picture books. They have been learning from one another through conversations and book clubs. They are now working on writing powerful responses on the big idea of their stories. They will include what they learned from the gift of words, what they learned from their thinking questions, and what they learned from others through conversations and blogging.

1.) MATH: Watch this video to prepare for tomorrow's class.

2.) LA:

Continue working on your powerful response on your Google Doc.
Be sure to share it with Mr. Hong if you haven't already done so in order to receive ongoing feedback to improve your writing.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

What is something you learned from someone during your book club discussions about a powerful phrase or something else about the big idea of your story?
Who did you learn this from?
What exactly did you learn?
Did you make any personal connections to something someone mentioned?
Edit/revise.

Today, you all started working on your powerful responses for your picture books. Some of you are well on your way to completing your first draft. Expect to receive feedback on your draft this evening. Your homework tonight will be to complete your first draft according to the criteria you received in class today. If you have any questions, post them here or email me directly.

CHALLENGE: I challenge everyone to complete everything listed below!

1.) MATH: No HW.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Complete your first draft of your powerful response for your picture book on your Google Doc. (Base this on your work you have done so far - visible thinking stickies, gift of words, and thinking and learning questions. Don't worry if your books/packages are at school. Work from your memory. You can use the materials in class tomorrow.)
Be sure to follow the criteria your received.
If you haven't already done so, share your Google Doc with me and make sure you allow me to 'edit' and 'comment'.
If you have any questions, post them here.

3.) POST A RESPONSE: (You can copy and paste your draft from your Google Doc over as long as you include everything listed below).

What do you think the message or big idea is for your picture book?

#Gratitude

Today was Mr. Redican's last day as a student teacher. He will be going back to Simon Fraser University on Monday and will complete the remainder of his courses to become a certified teacher. We all know he is going to be a great teacher when he starts his career and wish him well! This afternoon, we had an opportunity to thank Mr. Redican for helping you all learn. He was emotional when he spoke to each and every one of you and I know you all will remember him for many years to come.

1.) NA/NOVEL APPROACH:

Create a new Google Doc and name it the title of your picture book.
Write a paragraph about the big idea.
What is the message that the author is trying to tell the audience? Why?
Include reasons why and make sure you provide examples from the story using examples.
Include connections you made to things from the story.
Share the document with me at [email protected] and make sure you give me commenting abilities.
If you have any questions, post them here.

2.) COMPUTER PROGRAMMING:

Check the 'SCRATCH' website out and play around with it. It is the same programming language/style you have already learned about through Code.org.
Play some of the games and see if you can figure out how to create your own!

Mr. Redican's Last Day is Tomorrow

Today the students in division two had all sorts of fun. They finished their social studies inquiry projects, sung in the boys and girls choir respectively, got read an amazing book (Cloudwalker), had a science assessment, and played dodge ball. Phew, that's a full day! The students did a very good job and with their inquiry projects and it was great to see how much they had learned. When Mr. Redican first introduced Kinder Morgan to the class 3 weeks ago - no one had any idea what he was talking about. After weeks of researching and many rich class discussions the students can now intelligently talk about this project and more importantly voice their opinion about it. Wether you're for the pipeline, against it, or indifferent does not matter, but what does matter is having the ability to back up your position with a solid argument based on facts.

Be proud of this piece of writing, it is going in a class book.

2.) Social Studies:

Good job today finishing your videos.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

The book Cloudwalker is illustrated by on of Mr. Redican's favourite artists - Roy Henry Vickers.
Mr. Redican likes this artist because his style is very unique, his art work has a very west coast feel to it, he uses strong lines in his work, and his use of darks blues is beautiful.
Answer the following questions:
- Do you have a favourite artist? Who is it?
- Why do you like this artist?
- Does their artwork make you feel any emotion? (happy, sad, angry, etc)
- Do you have a favourite piece of their artwork?
Write your answer in full sentences.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

As the students filtered into class this morning, one student looked at the class schedule and said "I think today is going to be a good day." He was right, today was a good day! The class started a very exciting art lesson on digital photography. Mr. Hong showed the class a myriad of a iconic and powerful photos. This photo, arguably the most iconic photo of all time, is called "Afghan Girl." This photo was taken in 1984 at a refugee camp between Afghanistan an Pakistan. When this photo got picked to go on the front of National Geographic the response was instantaneous The number of people volunteering in refugees camp double almost over night and the "Afghans Children Fund" was started. Somehow one simple picture of a twelve year old girl had inspired change in the world.

1.) WRITERS WORKSHOP:

FINISH your final copy.
Remember this is something you should be proud of, so put in your BEST effort!

2.) POST A RESPONSE

Writer workshop is almost over.
Mr. Redican is curious about what you thought.
