Bollywood Dance Performance

Over the last two weeks, you worked with JESS DANCE on creating a bhangra dance routine. Your practice paid off as you continually improved on your dance routine by responding to feedback given to you by your dance instructor. The Learning Process is everywhere! A video of the performance will be posted shortly. Use this time over the weekend to complete your first draft of your passion project trailer. Don't forget to take pictures and videos if you need them.

NOTICES: Gr. 7 Hoodie money ($34 for a pullover, $38 for a zip)

1.) MATH: If you haven't handed in your math duotangs, please submit them on Monday.

2.) PASSION PROJECT:

Continue working on your passion project.
First draft is due on Monday. You should have all your images/videos uploaded and near completion.
This week will be spent giving one another feedback to improve your trailers.
You will also edit/revise your drafts to make them better according to your criteria sheet.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

You have a post a response holiday this morning. Simply use the PAR to ask and answer questions from your classmates about the Passion Project.
Collaboration and Communication are key component to your learning. Let's see if you can do this using some of the skills of digital citizenship you have been learning about.

Today, you all dove head first into your passion projects by setting up the structure of your titles/sub-title pages and slides. In addition to reviewing the overall learning intentions, we reviewed the criteria for an 'EXTENDING' assessment, we also discussed that you should not be aiming for the 'BEGINNING' column of your rubric. You asked lots of great questions for clarification as well which showed you were thinking critically about your projects! It was wonderful to see the great start that most of you have had on your passion trailers! I look forward to working with you tomorrow!

Inquiry Questions

Today, we worked with Mr. Fisher (Master Inquiry Teacher) and Mrs. Altman to come up with an inquiry question that you will try to answer over the next week. Tomorrow, you will be grouped with students with similar questions. I'm looking forward to the wonderful learning that is going to take place. In math, you learned about prime and composite numbers. We will continue this lesson tomorrow.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log in planner/calendar.

2.) MATH: You will hand in your duotangs tomorrow.

3.) PASSION PROJECT:

Upload photos you want to use directly to your Animoto file so you have it read for tomorrow.
If you are working on a mobile device, be sure to preview and finalize the video at home so you can continue editing it at school tomorrow.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about the difference between prime and composite numbers.
In your own words and in paragraph format (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences, and concluding sentence), explain what prime and composite numbers are.
Be sure to include examples of both in the body of your paragraph.
Give 2 students suggestions for improvement.

MARATHON OF HOPE AND THE INQUIRY PROCESS

Terry Fox Run

Today, we started the day off by participating in the Terry Fox Run. We walked over to Oak park and ran for a short time before heading back to the school. Can you believe the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over 750 million dollars for cancer research? Later, we started learning about the inquiry process. Mr. Fisher reviewed the different parts to an inquiry. We will be working on learning how the inquiry process works over the next few weeks before diving into our Social Studies inquiry questions.

NOTICES:

Envelopes/money must be returned by tomorrow.

Immunizations are tomorrow.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it in your planner/calendar.

2.) MATH:

Complete your handout from class today and any corrections you haven't done yet. Notebooks must be handed in tomorrow.

THE BEEP TEST

The Beep Test

Today, we continued to review 'PLACE VALUE' during Math and worked on corrections from last week. We will have one more day of Math review tomorrow and then we will start some new concepts later this week. In P.H.E. (Physical and Health Education), we assessed your cardiovascular health by conducting the beep test. Those students who didn't participate today will complete it on Wednesday. You will do this several times this year to see how your cardiovascular health improves.

3.) PASSION PROJECT:

We will start working on these projects in class tomorrow.
Have your images accessible. You can upload them directly to Animoto from home, bring a flash drive, or upload them to a Google Drive folder.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose at least 5 of the following words and write an interesting paragraph with them.

Collecting Plant Specimens in the Community

It was a pleasure to meet your parents on Thursday evening. For those parents who were unable to attend, I am looking forward to meeting you at some point this term. Feel free to drop in at any point to introduce yourself. It is important to involve parents, teachers, and students. This undoubtedly influences the learning of a child. Please take time to either send me an email or simply drop by my classroom to introduce yourself in the near future.

NOTICES: Return envelopes/money on Monday at the latest

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes per day and log it in your planner/calendar.

2.) MATH: Any unfinished worksheets from last week and corrections.

3.) PASSION PROJECTS:

Complete your brainstorming booklet over the weekend if you didn't complete it in class.
Play around with Animoto.com (website or app) and learn how to use it.
Create a practice video and make sure you know how to use all the functions (pictures, text, music, templates, etc).
Ideas for a practice video can be a special event that you shared with your family over the summer or another time.
We will set up the structure of your passion project with our co-created criteria sheet on Monday.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph form, complete your PAR
Include an Intro/topic sentence, 2-3 supporting sentences/details/examples (body), and a concluding sentence
Who are three people who should be involved in your education (you can include yourself in this).
Why is it important to involve these three people?

First Nation's Plant Identification Project

The Welcome Back BBQ (5-6pm) and Meet the Teacher night (6-7pm MANDATORY) is tomorrow. Click here for more information. It is expected that all parents will be present between 6-7 pm inside of our classroom. We will have a short presentation. I am looking forward to meeting everyone's parents. We will review how you will be learning this year and what the daily requirements of the students will be.

Today, the students learned more about the zones of regulation. We discussed the learning language that we will be using this year and the importance of self-regulation. We discussed behaviour that is 'EXPECTED' and behaviour that is 'UNEXPECTED'. In addition to this, we learned how everyone's behaviour has either a positive effect or negative effect on people.

Bollywood Dance Lessons

Today, Jess Dance started teaching the students of Laurier how to dance Bollywood-bhangra style! Our dance instructor, Aneesha, brought a great deal of energy and enthusiasm into her lessons. We are excited to learn how to create a dance routine with her over the next week. We will perform our routines this Friday. In the afternoon, students started reviewing basic math facts to prepare themselves for the Gr.6/7 math curriculum.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it in your planners.

2.) MATH: Complete the 3 page booklet in your yellow Math duotang.

3.) FORMS: Return any outstanding forms you have yet to return.

You all survived the first week of school! I can already tell we are going to have an exciting year full of wonderful learning. I can feel the energy and enthusiasm every time you all walk into the classroom! This energy will transfer into your learning success! I have outlined everything discussed in class, so please follow the instructions carefully. The passion projects will begin on Monday. What are your passions?

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it in your planner.

2.) PASSION PROJECTS: (DO THIS WITH YOUR PARENTS)

To help prepare for next week, do the following with your parents:

1.) Create a shared Gmail account with your parents. Your parents must have full access to this
account and it must be different than any other account you may currently use. Watch this
video with your parents to create your gmail account if you don't know how to do it.

Please have your parents use their birthday when signing up as they will be the 'BOSS' of this
co-account and they will have full access to it.

2.) Go to www.animoto.com and create an account with your parents. Again, do this with your
parents because they will be the 'BOSS' of all your online accounts. They must input their
birthday when you sign up.

Once you have created your account, click in the top right corner where you see your account
name after you log in and go to 'ACCOUNT'. Click here to see where you should be clicking.
Then, copy and paste this code into the promo code section so you have full access to the
educational account. EDUCATIONAL CODE: a4ez8tkgdei (IF THE CODE DOESN'T WORK,
don't worry. We can fix it at school.)

Play around with Animoto over the weekend so you are ready for Monday. If you want to start uploading pictures of your passions to Animoto, feel free to do so.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph form (intro, body, and conclusion), write about one of your 'PASSIONS' that many students may not know about.
Pay attention to the givens (spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, etc)

Zones of Regulation

Today, the students learned about self-regulation and mindfulness. More specifically, they learned about the Zones of Regulation. Parents, please take a look at the link above to read a little bit about the Zones. In addition to this, they learned how to write an acrostic poem using inspirational words. Students will finish off their good copies in class tomorrow. We are all looking forward to a wonderful year of learning! The learning never stops!

EARTH BITES

aToday, we were lucky to have our first EARTH BITES session today. Pablo and Clara taught the students how to harvest the vegetables from our Division 2 garden and how to make delicious kale chips. Two guest nutritionists also helped teach the students about healthy eating. Click here to access the recipe for kale chips. Parents, click here to learn more about the learning involved. In addition to this, the students also started working on their reading assessments to see where they are in their abilities. Most students will complete these by tomorrow.

Today, we spent a great deal of time setting our classroom rules and expectations by creating action criteria charts. We do this so it is clear to you how you should behave when walking in the halls, entering the classroom, during lessons, and during independent work time. This year, you will lean the importance of the role criteria plays in your learning.

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it on your reading calendar and your planner.

2.) PLANNERS: Have parents sign your planner.

3.) WEBSITE: Read everything on today's post. You may have a pop quiz on what I posted today in class tomorrow morning.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned how to use our class website. We modelled this in class and you had a chance to practice using it.
Your job today is to follow the instructions posted below:
LEARNING INTENTION: I can follow simple instructions.

i.) What was the purpose of making C-Charts (Action Criteria Charts) as a class today?
ii.) Answer the question above in a paragraph form (introduction, body and supporting
sentences/examples, and conclusion).
iii.) Give one student some suggestions on how they can improve their paragraph. You can give

WELCOME TO DIVISION 2!

Today, we welcomed the new Grade 6/7 students to Division 2! All students are excited and eager to learn. This week, we will be setting the class rules, expectations, and creating criteria around school work and behaviour. Parents, please expect to receive notices from the school later this week regarding parent driver volunteer forms, school fees, social media, FreshGrade, etc. We will be sending these forms home this week. Grade 6 students must return their immunization forms by Thursday at the latest. Parents/students, if you need to contact me outside of school hours, pease click here to email me directly.

Students are expected to log their readings in their agendas/planners on a daily basis.

2.) PLANNERS/AGENDAS:

Students are expected to complete their planners independently on a daily basis. The expectations include showing this to their parents and having parents sign the pages on a daily basis.
