CREATIVE WRITING

Today, students started the day off with a writing lesson. Students were introduced to their next writing assignment. We are starting our creative writing unit. Students will write stories by utilizing the 6 TRAITS of good writing. Their rubric outlines what they must do to achieve success. We reviewed the criteria and also read through two good examples of creative writing stories written by other 12 and 13 year old students.

IMPORTANT:

Parents, you will receive homework alert emails when your child has not completed his/her daily schoolwork. This is to prepare them for high school.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Complete all 3 worksheets if you did not complete them in class.
Mark and correct at home.
Homework alerts will be e-mailed to parents if you do not complete your work (this includes marking/correcting your work)

2.) LA/WRITING:

Below, you will find examples of some creative writes by other students your age.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we started generating ideas for your creative writing stories.
Watch this quick TEDx video on 'How to Write Fiction that Comes Alive!"
In point form or paragraph format, write out some of your ideas you have for your creative writing unit.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can brainstorm ideas for a creative writing story.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) List at least 3 different ideas for a story.
2.) For each of the 3 different story ideas, include 2-3 events that might take place in your story.
3.) List 3 characters that may be in your story.
4.) That is it! You don't have to do anything else. :)

THE FINAL TERM

The Final Phase of the Novel Approach

Today, it was back to business. Students arrived on time and were super self-regulated in their learning today. We started off the day with some 'Read to Self' time followed by a class meeting to review the expectations of all students for the final term. Students will take more ownership and responsibility over their learning this term to prepare them for high school! GO GET IT!

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Complete 4 pages of algebra (single variables and expressions) if you did not complete them in class.
Mark and correct at home.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:
LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a structured paragraph about what I did on spring break.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
a.) Structured paragraph format (intro, body, conclusion)
b.) Includes at least 2-3 supporting points/details/examples
c.) Conventions/Givens (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation)
d.) Ask 2 students a questions about their spring break paragraphs.
e.) Edit/revise your paragraph based on your self-assessment of the above criteria.

MATH TEST TOMORROW

INTEGERS TEST TOMORROW

Today, students continued reviewing adding/subtracting integers for their math test tomorrow. We reviewed a lesson and students had ample time to practice and ask questions. In the afternoon, students continued presenting their speeches. We will finish the rest of them off tomorrow. Don't forget to review all math covered over the last two weeks to ensure you are ready for the test tomorrow.

IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS - Students have a math test tomorrow. They need to know how to use a variety of strategies to add/subtract integers (number lines, integer chips, and rules)

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Review by making sure you complete, mark, and correct the following pages if you have not yet done so (MATH FOCUS)
Pg. 245-247
Pg. 250-251
Pg. 256-257
Return MATH TEXT BOOKS tomorrow.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Write about a deep and meaningful connection you have made to 'COUNTING BY 7's'
LEARNING INTENTION: I can make a deep and meaningful connection to an event from the novel.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format
2.) Givens (Spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and capitals)
3.) You clearly explained using your background knowledge a connection you made to something that happened in the story.
4.) Give one student feedback based on the above criteria.
5.) Edit/revise as needed.

SPEECH FEST IS APPROACHING!

This morning, we spent a good chunk of time reviewing covid protocols and answering question about the recent exposure. We have been quite diligent about keeping clean at school so we are confident we are all fine. Students were all given their dates for their speeches. We will complete them on Wed, Thurs, and Friday of this week. Students worked hard memorizing and practicing their presentations of their essays using the rubric/criteria provided.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Parents; Please review Covid protocols with your child and ensure you are completing the daily health check prior to sending your child to school.
2.) Parents: Please make sure your child prepares at home for their speech presentations.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Complete all worksheets on adding with integer chips. We will review and go over any misunderstandings before the quiz tomorrow.
QUIZ tomorrow on adding and subtracting with integer chips.

2.) LA/SPEECHES:

Practice your speech, make cue cards, follow the rubric, etc. You start presenting your speeches on Wednesday!

3.) CAREER EDUCATION:

Your research should be more or less completed.
Come up with 5 quality interview questions you want to ask someone in this profession. These should be questions that your research may not have answered.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Why is it important to adhere to all our safety protocols at school?
Respond in paragraph format and pay attention to the givens.
Give one student feedback on the givens (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.

SPEECH FEST!

This weekend, students will be spending a good chunk of their time practicing their speeches so they are prepared to present on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week. It is extremely important that all students practice over the next 5 days in order to be successful when it is your turn to give your speech. Work hard, prepare flash cards, print out your speech, make final edits, etc. If you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can email me directly.

IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS - Please have your child practice reciting their speech to you. Please help them stay on track for their speeches in the second half of next week.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH:

Complete 1 adding/subtracting worksheet using any strategy.
Complete 2 adding/subtracting/multiplication/division worksheets.
Show all your work.
Mark and correct at home (answer key is on the back).

2.) LA/SPEECH:

Prepare and practice for your speech next week using the rubric/criteria handout.
Prepare flash cards, any visuals you need, any props you may need, etc.
Be sure to practice reciting your speech in front of a mirror so you can practice being more expressive.
Watch the example speeches posted below.

3.) CAREER EDUCATION:

The research portion of your career education assignment is due on Monday.
Use your rubric/criteria handout in order to be successful in your learning.

SPEECH FEST!

Practice your speech!

Today, students started working on their speeches. They submitted their persuasive essays yesterday and are now making some final edits based on how they will be presenting their speeches. We reviewed success criteria and students went outside to practice their oral presentation skills. Later, they learned how to subtract using number lines and in the afternoon they continued making progress in ADST and the 'BRIDGE' challenge.
IMPORTANT:
1.) PARENTS - Your child will be practicing their speech at home from now until next Wednesday. Please ask them to practice reciting their speeches to you at home while using the speech criteria posted on our class website.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete subtracting with integers worksheet, mark, and correct. Be sure to label all lines and to show your learning using the two number line methods.

2.) LA/SPEECH: Practice reciting your speech to your family members.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

We have been reading 'COUNTING BY 7's' for over a week now. It was written by Holly Goldberg Sloan.
You will practice using 'BK/CONNECTIONS' and 'INFERENCING' for today's PAR.
LEARNING INTENTIONS:
- I can use my background knowledge to make a connection to something from the story.

- I can use my background knowledge of what I know about the characters and story to make an
inference.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, body, and conclusion)
2.) You provide evidence from the story that you connected to and evidence of BK from the story
that allowed you to make your inference.
3.) Your connection must be deep and meaningful. It should help you towards understanding the
big idea of the story.

The criteria for the gift of words and thinking and learning questions is in your Novel Approach Picture book booklets.

NOVEL APPROACH

This week is about completing our 'WORK'!

Today, students started the day by making more progress on their persuasive essays. I am happy to see all students following the persuasive essay structure in their essays. In math, we put algebra on pause to learn more about integers so they have the background knowledge to complete more challenging algebra questions. In the afternoon, students started their career education research assignments and they also put the final touches on their powerful response writes for their Novel Approach work. The Novel Approach work and essays are due on Wednesday morning.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Essays are due on Wednesday.
2.) Novel approach work is due on Wednesday (Gift of words, thinking and learning questions, and powerful response)

LEARNING:
1.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH:
