Today, the students were introduced to their Social Studies unit on mapping. They started out by brainstorming ideas on a concept map of the differences between modern mapping (Google Earth) and conventional mapping (using an atlas). The students learned that by using technology to learn mapping skills, it opens up a whole new world for them. They can become immersed in many different aspects of a specific location simply through its coordinates (longitude/latitude). They viewed a demo of how they can use Google Earth and Street View to learn more about an area. They learned you can learn much about a location's culture, population, people, food, language, landscape, climate, animals, buildings and architecture, transportation, monuments, and history. They are all looking forward to learning how to utilize this technology to enhance their learning.
