The Learning Process - AFL/FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Today, students continued working on their presentations for their inquiry projects on early humans. They have worked through the immersion, investigation, and coalescing stages. Now, they are working on going public with their presentations. We are aiming to start presentations next Thursday with their groups. Be sure to work on your projects over the weekend.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we reviewed learning intentions and the criteria for the 'GIFT OF WORDS'.
In a book that you're currently reading or read recently, post a powerful phrase and explain what it means according to the criteria for 'GIFT OF WORDS' that you reviewed in class.
Remember, the meaning of the phrase will be different depending on the 'CONTEXT' of the phrase within the story.
Edit/revise your work for the givens (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, etc)

I think this means that Kyle is not into reading or he is into reading but he does not want to be a nerd. I think that big in this sentence means to be like excited. He also could think he's too good for books.

"The glimmer of moonlight was caught in pools of water on the cave floor. It lit up a forest of pointed stones, some rising from the ground and some hanging from the cave roof." -Warriors, the new prophesy: Moonrise. I think "caught in pools of water" means that the light reflected off them and made them look like pieces of moonlight were caught inside the water. The "forest of stones" isn't really a forest, but it maybe it means that it looked like a forest. Or that the stones were close together and you had to maneuver like in a forest- if you read the next sentence, you also find out that the rock was white and some columns were joined at the centre. So maybe it looked like a birch forest? Or maybe it just gave the feel of a forest at night.

"everyone has a reason to fear the boy with the gun". This is just a quote but the phrase is kind of summing up the entire story. The phrase is also a hook, making you want to read it. I just think it means that the kids at the high school are just scared of the boy that's shooting on their graduation/speech day.

@Andrew- You mean for PAR? For PAR from looking at other people's PARs, I think we have to just take a sentence from a book and write what you think it means from evidence from the text like the one we did for 'When I Was 8".

This quote is from the book Maze Runner. This quote was said when 2 people from Glade were trapped outside and 1 of the new person asked if anyone has lived through the maze.

This quote meant that they were devastated and had no choice than to die. They probably were also angry since a new glader sneak in before the walls closed.

I forgot where etymology of this line is, but I still know the meaning.

This quote mean't that the biggest villan from the story was dead. The short quote makes it look even more deeper than it already is.

Someone tell me why I chose to pick a phrase from THIS book. Sure it was sitting right next to me, and I’m a very lazy person, but this is probably the most depressing book I’ve ever read. Anyways… I guess I’ll actually talk about my phrase of choice now…

‘If I hadn’t mentioned it, you would have continued on with your life, pinballing from one tedious task to the next…’. Now, you might be thinking, ‘wow… is this character depressed?’ answer: yes, they are... SPOILER ALERT. Or you don’t understand what this phrase means and I’m jumping to conclusions. It might make it easier to understand this phrase if I tell you about the sentences before, and after. Not word for word of course, because CeNsOrShIp--- Prior to the phrase the main character was saying that somewhere random there was an ant crawling, and you wouldn’t know, or care whether it was a worker, drone, or queen. They said that they wouldn’t have known that ant existed ‘If I hadn’t mentioned it’. After the phrase the book listed lots of the ‘tedious tasks’, and that we too, were like the ants, I suppose we were though, as this was a sci-fi book about aliens, and the ‘aliens’ would see us as insignificant as the ants.

I really like this phrase because of the fancy language they used, but I should probably help decipher them. Tedious means long and dull (in this case), and pinballing in this context means doing one thing after another. So, when they say pinballing from one tedious task to the next, I think what they mean is that we would’ve continued on doing one long and boring thing after another (without knowing or caring about that ant.)

I am not really sure what the quote means but I will take a guess.I think that if you face someone you hate it will be easier for you to fight him, but if you want to fight someone you like it will be hard for you because your heart will hurt.

That is a line from the book 'Catboy'. Taylor moved from a northern town to the heart of Toronto. The reason he said this is because since he moved, he doesn't have any his old school, his old house, or his friends from his town in Toronto. Everything has changed and and he tries to adjust to the new location.

I think this sentence mean that everyone is not perfect, because everyone should have something that they are good at and bad at . Maybe you might want to be the perfect one but you should also have something that you are not quite well and so you should not always feel that you must be the perfect one and you can be good but not perfect. And from the book , the author want to tell people that it is your choice to be a good or bad person and you should not always think that you are the best in the world.

“Even as she hesitated, a breeze fluttered Ragweed’s earring.”- from Poppy Stories, Poppy. I think that Ragweed’s earring means a lot to Poppy because everytime she looks at the earring or feels it on her ear, it strengthens her resolve to keep going. I also think that the earring helps Poppy throughout her adventures by reminding her of why she is making the journey in the first place.

Her mom finally let her go outside for the first time that she remembers. I really think this is the pivotal moment in the book actually, because it is where the main character gets to see the world, and her whole perspective changes.

It started off of how this guy was getting this girl really pissed off. He triggered something which started her anger to build up.

I honestly think that it’s sort of like the start of a fire. How at first it’s a small spark but then it turns into large flames. The start of getting mad then later on she’s raging of anger.

"They don't have a clue..."

This phrase was quoted from the book 'Schooled'. It's being said by a boy stating that the parents don't have a clue about us. And I can agree (for the most part). But what I think he's really trying to say is that parents always say that "We understand because we also went to middle school/elementary school". However the boy disagrees with that, school is much more different compared to school parents went to (except the classrooms, they've been the same for 100 years basically). So they should be a little bit less strict when a lot of them don't know what were doing in class or going through (I believe that's why we have a class blog).

Sorry for the very late post! I didn’t do this last time and I have to it. Enjoy! (Even though I know no one is gonna read this)

‘A Lunar with a stolen identity.
A mechanic with no one to run to, nowhere to go.
But they will be looking for a ghost.’

This part is very confusing to the people who haven’t read the book Cinder. But if I read it this part alone, I would think what a Lunar was. Without that important piece of information, I wouldn’t know what half of this was talking about. But she’s a Lunar with a stolen identity? Which identity did she steal? But the next sentence makes it kind of clear, but I’m guessing that she has multiple identities. The stolen identity she mentions in the first sentence may be that she’s a mechanic, and a Lunar at the same time. ‘But they will be looking for a ghost’ Makes me think of her hiding away from civilization and people. Ghosts don’t technically talk or show up to a person. That would be my guess to what this part means.
