AFIYA - WRITTEN RESPONSE

Today, we started the day with a powerful picture book read aloud. We read 'AFIYA', written by James Berry! A beautiful story about childhood, culture, and place. Students wrote their powerful written responses here afterwards using the written response rubric. They used their reading strategies and ability to synthesize and evaluate to come up with a big idea. Later, they continued working on their persuasive essays and learned more about repeating patterns and growing patterns in math. In the PM, they co-created criteria and brainstormed ideas for their Career Education assignment.

Today, we read a book called 'A Story about Afiya'. Afiya is a young girl who has a white frock, that she wears every day. She goes places and gathers things onto her dress, animals like tigers and fish. Every evening, she washes all the day's events off the frock. I think the Big Idea of the story is that whatever happens, every day, every month, every year is a clean slate for people to change their ways. I think this because no matter what gets on the dress, it gets washed off every night and something new is made the next day. I think this is true, that people can change, but it does take effort. A terrorist could be deradicalized, but not if they aren't motivated, not if they don't try. A racist could become more inclusive, but not if they don't put the effort in to educate themselves and adopt a more thoughtful view of people. In the end, every day is an opportunity to change what you think about the world, and I think many of us have a few things to change.

I think the big idea is that Afiya has freedom to do these things like go to the zoo the ocean. Her white dress is worn very day and every day she has a new pattern on her dress every day. I think the dress represents her memory of going to the sea side. I have a connection with this like how she would always go out and adventure I remember always gong outside and adventuring every where. I think this is the big idea because she has the freedom to go out and have fun with out worry and every time she goes out she comes back with new memory. Afiya, a book about a little girl dancing in nature, playing with the animals, all peaceful and happy. The big idea of the story is about creativity and freedom because I feel like as more years come by, kids start losing their creativity. I remember the TED talk we watched in school how a man said that kids aren't playing enough because of school work. Afiya had that creativity and freedom that many other kids might not have had. For example, Afiya was dancing, playing with the birds, the fishes, but other kids might not have that creativity and freedom and wouldn't be able to play as freely like her. In my opinion, kids should have more creativity. They should be able to play around outside with others and to be able to dream! I think if everyone heard about this book we would we able to learn more from it like learning how to express emotions, or learning how to think more freely and being more open minded.

Afiya is free, she has nothing to be worried about, she can do anything she wants and there is nothing that can hold her back. So i think the big idea might be to be free and do what you want, people these days are chained to the "reality" of the world, we have to work, learn, and follow orders to have a good life. Mean while people like Afiya is free, in the story she can go anywhere and nothing can stop her! She goes somewhere everyday wearing her white flock, she is free to do anything she wants! She is in her own world where she can do anything she wants. In my opinion i think being free and happy is better then being rich where you might not be happy because everything you need, you have. The reason i think this is that, me as a human im not always happy. I always have to follow orders and i cant just say "NO" the reason im writing this par is because i technically have to. Yes Canada is a free country but that does not mean you are free to do anything you want! You are still hold back by the laws and Afiya doesn't have to fear this because she lives alone and is happy everyday because everyday is a new experience for her while the reason time passes so fast for us is because nothing changes, everyday is like the same and we do the same thing over and over again that its just not interesting as the first day of school now. For example, the read aloud has been playing for so many times now and he first time we noticed but we slowly forget that it was even there! So that is my big idea: "we are free but not entirely free"

365 days a year, 18 years to make memories as child. That's 6,570 days of your childhood. I believe that the big Idea is that you need to hold the memories that are important to you as a individual, that as a child you still have the time to be free and not under the burden of taxes. Afiya has a dress that marks all her memories, Also if you pay attention all the imprints are all positive. Afiya's memories are all positive making it so that she is living her life as a happy soul, as a person who can forget about the negative and move on and look forward to the positive. The pigeons and the birds represent the freedom she has as a child. The freedom that she will remember. At the end she says she's amazed, amazed that she has room to make memories that truly represents who she is as a person, Amazed that she knows that she can be who she wants to be, that her dress is just like a photo wall, remembering the best of the best, A wall that has clear illustrations of her personality and that forgets the times of negativity, holding on to the memories important to her.

Imagine having a dress, that can keep all your memories for you, like a photograph. Afiya has a dress like this, and I think that the big idea of the book is that, you should enjoy the day, have fun and explore, because tomorrow will be a new day. I think this because every day, when she goes out to explore, her dress keeps the memories for her, like a photograph, and the next day, it restarts. If you spend all your time indoors, you won't have any memories of your childhood, but if you go out, and explore, you can look back when you're older, and smile. I can connect to this because, when I was younger, my Dad wouldn't allow me to sit inside and watch TV, because he wanted to go out and play, so I would have memories of my childhood, and now that I think about it, I'm glad that I listened to him. If I sat inside all day, and did nothing but lounging around, I would feel like I didn't do anything worthwhile, but if I actually went out to play, I could go to bed feeling like I had a good day. An example of an inference I made was, in the book, I was very confused about why her dress kept on changing, but when I thought about it, I thought that maybe there was a deeper and more important meaning to it. And when I thought about it some more, I eventually got my big idea! To sum up, you should try to be like Afiya, have fun, explore, overall, just and enjoy the moment.

Afia is a very imaginative child, she loves going outside with her white dress that changes patterns and she washes it everyday. She has a lot of creativity and imagination and everyday her dress is white and clean. I think she's a creative and innocent child because every time she goes outside she comes back with new patterns because of her going outside and experiencing nature. It also shows that she loves animals and nature. Overall, Afia has a lot of individuality and bonds a lot with nature.

When I thought of the big idea, I thought of recording all your creativity and imagination, but delete it so you have a new recording the next day every day, but you can still remember it still as a fun memory she can keep.

When the story ended the first thing I thought of was dementia. Dementia is a disease that causes memory loss and as well as loss of speech and sometime body movement. I thought of this because every day when she wakes up and puts her dress on the pictures in the dress are 'washed away', as if everything is gone and forgotten. I think the big idea of the of the book is that everyday is a new beginning. I think this because when she wakes up there is a new dress white as it can be. this happens every day of the book. The dress adapts to the surroundings of itself. The message that interoperate is a one that I use every day, when I wake up I usually don't hold grudges. A new day is a new beginning, a new slate. although I am sure there was a deeper meaning behind the book that the author had behind, but this was my personals opinion on the book. What do you think the meaning behind the book is?

I think the big idea is the changing of time. She becomes one with the environment in every space and time. Her dress is her imagination and her mind is wild. Her washing her frock does not change her imagination because her imagination is still unstable with anything she comes across being clinged into her dress as her memory and imagination. Her dress changes over time as the sunflowers bloom in the Spring, the fishes swim into her dress in the seaside in the Summer, and Autumn leaves turn orange in October. Her mind is a wild one with an imagination and memory tattered onto her frock. It becomes a blank canvas when she wakes up because after she sleeps, the frock doesn't feel her mind and imagination that comes from her play. I think that she has a syndrome synesthesia which is when a sense becomes connected with another like when music becomes vibrant colours and the wall having a taste by looking at it. I think her imagination is wild because of this and that her mind is wild.

Childhood is something almost everyone wants back, but what did you do? Do you even remember the friends you had? We tend to all forget about our childhood the older we get. It’s quite sad to be honest, we know we we’re happy but we don’t know why. The story AFIYA perfectly shows this as her dress is like us. Of course, it’s just a dress, but if you think about it, it represents our brain/ memory we have. As shown, every time she passes new objects they get imprinted on her white dress, but it never stays if another object gets attached too. It could be representing her mind in the current time or, it could mean her memory in all. Notice how after she wakes up from night it’s all cleared? This reminded me of my dad. He once told me about how he pulled all-nighters for 3 days once and realized that he had a better memory. In addition, when he had a dream, it felt familiar, but he couldn’t remember why. That’s why he had made his theory that sleep is to erase our memories to let us be able to handle life, which I got to admit, I kind of agree. According to my research a year ago for a presentation, our brain clears and edits our memories that are unneeded. I’m not specialized in this, but I do admit the way our eye see’s things despite it being the other way around when it’s right in front of us makes me wonder if our brain is really editing how we see the world. I can’t help but think that the dress really represents her current mind and how much her memories hold, though, of course you could say than her dress should have words and more, but that’s just my imagination on AFIYA.

What is something you love about your childhood? I think the big idea of the book 'AFIYAH' is about freedom and living life to the fullest, to find your true self and enjoy this life while it lasts. I think this is the big idea because the book is very calm and consists of beautiful pictures and the outdoors of nature. The book also talks about her dress a lot and I think this is because the dress can allow Afiyah to pick on the day and find something to collect, but let these memories go away the next day after the dress is washed and fresh like paper. I can tell Afiyah loves the outdoors and admires the sharp colours of nature, adventuring the world the way she wants. Overall, I think freedom and truly enjoying life represents Afiyah's passion for the outdoors and her love and enjoyment for nature.

Aliya, is a unique girl who loves to wear her elegant dress were ever she goes. However, when she visits a place she would always treasure the moment and bring a a souvenir back. After listening to the book, I think that the Author wants us to know how to treasure our moment even though we might not like where we are going. As stated in the book, when she visits a place, she would always remember what she did and after that, she comes home with all these wonderful objects that she took from her visits. Additionally, even though her dress might be extremely dirty, she would always wash it everyday, and continue her collection! That is why no matter how much you hate a place, you should always enjoy your time because time is very precious!

I think the big idea of Afia is memories, because her dress thing changes to what she either saw or remembers. Her dress is plain white as new paper, when she came back from a zoo she has dead lions on her dress most likely. when she comes back from the seaside she has salmon on her dress most likely as well. so it might as well be memories is what makes her dress with all those stuff on the dress. Or its her imagination. I don know. But its a story so it doesn't really matter. I thought of this because I had nothing else to think of.

I think the big idea of Afiya is memories because her dress changes on either what she saw or remembers, like when be she returned from the zoo she had a lion design on it. Later she had returned from the seaside and had fish designs on her dress as well. So the thing that makes that happens is either memories which is most likely to be used, or its just her imagination and everyone somehow seeing it. I re did this par because my parents said to add more, i also thought that.

Childhood is the only time in our lives when we have no significant responsibilities or duties. In the story "Afiya", by James Berry, the main character walks around and whatever she sees gets imprinted into the dress she wears. She cannot get rid of these imprinted images through washing and they only disappear when a new day arrives. I believe that the big idea of this story is that we must utilize the time of our early lives to do worthwhile activities and make meaningful memories. I think that the white dress represents the innocent mindset of a child and how it is easy to do such activities during that time. To illustrate, whenever she goes somewhere in the story, an image of that place is imprinted on her dress, causing her to remember that place. No matter how hard she tries to wash her dress, the pictures stay, and it's ready for more memories the next day. Adults don't have this ability to do so because of the increased responsibilities and tasks they must do. Therefore, I think that the big idea of this story is to use our time as a child wisely and preserve these memories for when we do grow up.

I think this because everyday Afiya wears her white frock and something new gets on her frock. On some days, things get on her frock and on other days animals decorate it. I also think that the things that get caught on her frock represent the new things that Afiya finds and the white frock that gets cleaned everyday represents her forgetting the things that she discovered. In conclusion, I think that the big idea for the book Afiya is that people find and learn new things everyday, but sometimes they might forget some of the things that they discover.

Afiya seems like a courageous little girl who enjoys the wilderness. She's like a strong wind that travels throughout the world, blowing over the mountains and through the grass carrying whatever she finds with her. It's almost as she goes on a expedition every single day, she is very brave with no doubt. Seems like she can communicate with nature as the entire journey of hers is in nature. As brave as she is, I still believe that the big idea of this story is still curiosity or freedom. Personally, I believe the big idea is curiosity or freedom because since she's still a child, nothing is pulling her back and it's like she's discovering something every time she leaves for her daily walk. Being free is what everyone wants and I know more about freedom because it's black history month. But being curious is generally only a personality of younger people. Which is why I think curiosity and freedom are the big ideas.

Every day, our feelings are different. Our feelings get affected by your surroundings. What you see, what you smell, what you taste, or what you touch. You might feel something one day, but that feelings can change the next day. This shows in the book, "AFIYA". Afiya's white clothes always gets affected by her surroundings, like a Chameleon. For example, when she walked past some red roses, the red roses got printed on her white clothes. This shows that feelings get affected by their surroundings. If you became stressed one day, and you are frustrated, but your feeling will change when time passes. You might have something you like the next day that made your feeling better. Also, every day, Afiya washes her clothes. This means that your feelings become different every day. If you became angry one day, and if you didn't reset your feelings, you would be angry all of the time. Every day, your feelings are different. What do you feel today?

Our minds which are intertwined, it pushes our hearts together as the breeze washes by reminding us of wonders that close their eyes just like we do every night; they surround us and pulls our true feelings out, just as Afiya dances around the neighborhood, exploring the colourful mysteries that slowly begin to lie on her dress as it is not white; Afiya's dress is full of colours. Colours of memories. These memories indirectly indicate the pure childlike wonder which remains in its spot inside our hearts, its purity is as white as Afiya's dress, though after each event, like Afiya's dress, our mind washes our hearts, though nothing is forgotten as pieces continue to remain. In my perspective, I think the the big idea that the author is trying to express is that like Afiya, though we need to be aware of our surroundings, we must remember to stay calm and continue to enjoy what we have while we still do; I sincerely agree with the author's idea as it is noticeable in my eyes as everyone begins to forget that we are still children, if not our age, our minds can still imagine and we mustn't forget what we can do, because our innocence can impact our future. Moreover, as politics begin to overwhelm our population, start to question yourself and ask "What was I doing before this?", think hard and remember when we were young and how we'd play, running around the playground. Then, this may impact our future generations as they will have no fear and will be free from the need to fight.

Was there ever a time where your creativity took over and you imagined things that no one would think of? Afiya, a book written by James Berry and illustrated by Anna Cunha, is about a girl who has a dress that turns into the Enviromint around her. For example, when she traveled to the zoo, she came back with 2 tigers on her back and front, and when she went to the sea side, she came back with a fish swimming in her with an ocean pictured on her dress. This book’s big idea is to treasure your memory's, to illustrate, her dress kept on recording her childhood memories by collecting it on the dress. Like when she visited a bunch of res roses, the roses appeared to be imprinted on the dress. There was a time where I went to the beach and had a wonderful time with my friends, I wish It could have lasted forever. When I got home, I found a see shell in my pocket. I keep that in my bathroom to remember all the good times I had back then. I thought of that big idea right away because it related to my seashell and I. Since Afiya meant healing, the story might also be saying that memories can heal people who are lost, or people in tough situations. Just sitting down in a peaceful room and remembering all there awesome child memories can lift someone's spirit up, and maybe inspire them to keep on going. Just like how Afiya was always surprised and excited when her awesome experiences showed up on her dress. I also think she kept that one dress because that’s the dress that experienced all the memories with her, it’s a reminder of her childhood. Anyway, the point is that memories are important and should be remembered through your lifetime because you never know, sometime later, you might even need those memories.

What I think the big idea is of the book AFIYA, is that if you imagine and think creatively then you can see what you want, everyone is unique and has their own opinion, mind, and ways of doing things. No one can bully you because everyone is different and they also have their own mindset. Culture is something that shouldn't be made fun of or what discriminates you. i visualized when Afiya goes somewhere and comes back with something from that place, creativity is what everyone should have no matter what their age is because it can help them become more positive and happier. overall, no one can discriminate you or bully you because everyone is different and they to have something that they can be pick on.

Child hood. I'm pretty sure we've all had one. Believe that the big idea of this book is that in childhood our creativity lets us explore the world and learn new things. This is shown by Afiya's dress picking up colours and patterns that she experiences when she sees things and goes places. In the book, her dress picks up patterns but they get washed away next morning. I believe that this is because she is ready to experience new things every day. The colours on her dress represent feelings and the patterns, memories. She brings a clean slate to the table every new day. All in all, this was an interesting book that can be interpreted in many different ways.

Do you have any objects that make you think about something that happened to you? I definitely do. I think the big idea of the story we read is that objects carry memories. I think think this because Afiya has a white frock that she wears. In the story, when Afiya goes somewhere, her surroundings are imprinted onto her frock. The next day, her dress is there, ready to be Afiya's connection to childhood. I think that after she outgrows her frock, she will look at it and remember all the fun things she did while wearing it. Later in her life, it will be a connection to her childhood. For example, my great grandmother was always wearing her gloves. ALWAYS. After she died, I am reminded of her every time I wear my gloves or see someone wearing gloves. Aaron has a stuffed polar bear that he used to carry around with him. Now, whenever I see it, I think about the time when we went to visit our family in USA. I'm pretty sure we all have at least one of these things that make us remember. I certainly do.

Childhood, a time of wonders and innocence. Life is always fascinating. Afiya learns about different cultures and people. She accepts them and they are "imprinted on her dress" which makes up who she is. Overall, I think the big idea is about acceptance and memories. Throughout the story she learns from others and they play together with no judgement and accept that people are different. Definitely, I think this message is important because after all this racism in our world, people should change their views so there can be more freedom and peace. "Acceptance is the road to all change."

Today, I read a book called “The Story of Afiya.” This book is about adventure. There is a girl named Afiya who has a white dress, and she always washes her dress every day. She also goes out for an adventure every day, without a single day missed, and her dress is always decorated with various things, but every next day the dress is clean. The big idea of this story is every morning, people’s minds and feelings reset. Why I think of this is because Afiya’s white dress is always clean the next day. I believe people’s minds and feelings are like a canvas for painting, and you can color it however you want. My second piece of evidence is the part where the pigeons were coloring the dress. In my opinion, the “paint” for the “canvas” is the experience and feelings of yourself. In summary, this book’s big idea is people’s feelings reset every day.

Today, we read the book “AFIYA”. It’s very hard to understand the picture book but I can understand by visualizing every detail. Let me tell you the big idea of this book😊. The protagonist in the book (Afiya) is a black person. But she wears and washes a white dress every day. And painted so many colorful things after she went home. And at the end of the book, there is a colorful tree growing on her body. I think the big idea is, be happy and freedom every day no matter what you look like! This book is about a girl that has a dress that can show her memories of a place and how she feels on itself and when she goes to a zoo on her dress it shows tigers turn on the outside with birds flying around it shows a bundle of birds examples from the story it shows what's around her and makes her live in the moment.
