AMAL UNBOUND - PAKISTAN

Today, students completed their Plant I.D and First Nations Use projects. Tomorrow, they will be assessed on their ability to identify various plants that they learned about over the last few days. Review materials are listed in the 'SCIENCE' section below. We will continue the Global Read Aloud tomorrow. We will continue to learn about character development, Pakistan, and reading strategies.

1.) SCIENCE:

Review for the science assessment tomorrow. Post any questions you have here.

2.) INQUIRY: Complete your analysis, background knowledge, and synthesis handout.

3.) WORD WORK: Continue working on your definitions.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

You have been learning about Pakistan in 'AMAL UNBOUND'. Some of you may already know things about Pakistan. Share your learning with your classmates.
Watch this video to build your background knowledge. It will be helpful to your paragraph.
Answer the following questions in paragraph (intro, body, and conclusion) format:

3.) What do you want to know about Pakistan?

FRESHGRADE REFLECTIONS

Today, you built criteria around writing FreshGrade learning reflections for your digital portfolios. Click here to review it. For homework, be sure to write a genuine and honest learning reflection for your Word Work #2 Evaluation on FreshGrade. Be sure to refer to the criteria you built today to ensure you have included everything required. Also, be sure to add other things you may have learned along the way that isn't mentioned.

1.) SOCIAL STUDIES:

Mark off all your important notes/facts/questions/details in your inquiry notebooks.
You are free to create a legend based on the information you are required to have listed on your criteria sheets.

2.) SCIENCE:

Complete your portion of your PLANT I.D. Projects for tomorrow. You will not have much time to work on this in class. You will only have time to glue your materials on your posters.

3.) FRESHGRADE:

Complete your WORD WORK #2 Learning reflection for last week's words based on the criteria for FreshGrade reflections that you created. Click here for the criteria and example reflection.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Watch this video on digital citizenship.
In paragraph form, write about at least 3 important points about 'DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP'.
In the body of your paragraph, be sure to include 3 specific examples from the video or from your background knowledge.
Read the responses of your peers and ask at least one person a question about what they wrote.
Give one student a suggestion on how to improve their paragraph.
Edit/revise your original post.

The Language Of Learning

What do you think is going to unfold?

The students of division 1 and 2 are learning a new language this year. This new language is 'THE LANGUAGE OF LEARNING!' This includes using the words Mr. Fisher and I have been teaching you in class. Some of these words include learning intentions, success criteria, self/peer assessment, descriptive feedback, and most of all.....ownership! When you start using this 'LEARNING LANGUAGE', you are owning your learning! Parents, we started the Global Read Aloud this past week. Our classes will be building on their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills as they connect with students from across the globe.

IMPORTANT: Tell someone why you're thankful to have them in your life!

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes per day

2.) WORD WORK:

Test on Monday (last week's words)

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

In paragraph form (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences and examples, and concluding sentence), write about 2-3 things you are thankful for!
Example: "Muahahahhahahaahahahahahhahaha!" What was that sound you ask? Well, let me tell you. That was the sound of pure happiness! A few things I am thankful for include my job, my family, and my friends. For example, I am thankful for my job because I get to help students become capable learners through . In addition to this, I'm thankful for my family because they bring joy to my life. I can't imagine what my life would be like without my wife and my two daughters. Finally, I am thankful for my friends because we have fun together and they always give me support. I have many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. What are you thankful for?
Give one student a suggestion for improvement based on 'PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE' or the 'GIVENS' (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc).
Edit/revise your post based on the feedback you received.

What will this look like after responding to feedback?

Today, we met our new student teachers, Ms. Chohan and Mr. Collins. They will be supporting the learning in our classes for the entire school year. You are lucky to have so many teachers working with you! The learning can only thrive! They will be in our classes every Thursday for the next 6 weeks. Plant I.D. Projects are due on Monday. Mr. Fisher and I have noticed a big increase in the number of students starting to take more ownership of their learning by asking for more feedback, improving their work, and sharing their work with others. Being able to articulate your learning and how you reach a learning intention is a big part of how you will learn this year.

1.) PASSION PROJECT

Final draft is due tomorrow.
You must submit your entire passion project folder tomorrow with all your assessment sheets in it.

2.) WORD WORK QUIZ:

Word Work is due on Monday.
Quiz is postponed until Monday.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Collaboration is a great way to learn from one another. Working with others allows you to learn from others and it often pushes your thinking so you can learn even more.
An important ingredient to collaboration is learning to accept the ideas and perspectives of others and to be open to trying new things.
In paragraph form, write about 2 things that have been going well with the 'COLLABORATION' in your Plant I.D. group and 2 things that have been challenging.
Include detailed examples and explain why.
Include any challenges you have overcome and how you did this.
DO NOT INCLUDE ANY NAMES.
Give 2 students suggestions for improvement.
Edit/revise your original post based on the feedback you receive.

EARTH BITES SESSION #2

Our little helpers

Today, Pablo and his Earth Bites team helped the students learn how to harvest carrots and tomatoes. In addition to this, they learned how to compost, trim, and prepare the soil for the new crops. The students ended their session by learning how to plant new vegetables. Click here to watch a clip of what the students learned. Later, you engaged in an amazing peer feedback session. I was incredibly impressed with what you produced. #TheLearningNeverStops

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Produce/finalize the latest version of your passion trailer.
Watch this version and copy the 'LINK' and paste it here for your classmates to see. Part of sharing your work with others is part of 'OWNING' your learning.
Watch one other student's trailer and give them some useful suggestions on how to improve based on the criteria for the assignment or something you noticed.
Respond to any comments you receive to acknowledge you have read the feedback from your peer and that you will take action to make the changes.

KNOWLEDGE BUILDING CIRCLES

Today Division 1 and 2 spent the morning working on their Plant Identification and First Nations Use Project. We were so impressed with how well groups worked together. Students were engaged for over an hour on their projects. Students asked for both peer and teacher feedback to improve their projects. They then took this feedback and applied it to make their projects even better. It was amazing to see you all using the BIG 6 Principles of Learning. That is what taking OWNERSHIP looks like! AWESOME JOB!! In the afternoon, students got their Inquiry Knowledge Building Groups and created some criteria/ground rues for meeting. Then, they dove into their questions! Again, we were so impressed with the ownership and self regulation shown by the group. Keep it up.....because the year is just underway and.....THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS!!!

Your second draft is due tomorrow.
All edits/revisions based on your self-assessment should be completed for tomorrow.
Tomorrow you will do a peer-assessment.
Final project is due on Friday.

3.) SCIENCE:

Plant ID mini-project is due on Friday, October 5th.
Manage your time wisely and get your work/research done.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Explain a daily inquiry word period from start to finish in detail (think about what you did today)?

SELF-ASSESSMENT

Today, you engaged in your first self-assessment activity with your Passion Project Trailers. As a class, we first watched a student's passion trailer and gave him some feedback based on the criteria for the passion project so you could see examples of descriptive feedback that will help him improve his work. Then, you watched your own trailers and completed your self-assessment sheets. This should be completed at home. Once you have had it stamped at school, you can start on your edited/revised version. Remember, keep a copy of each version. Do not simply overwrite your original draft.

1.) MATH: Complete worksheet (both sides) if you did not complete it in class.

2.) PASSION PROJECT:

Complete your self-assessment sheet. Here is an example if you need to look at one.
You will have class time to work on your second draft tomorrow.

3.) SCIENCE:

You used the criteria for the 'EXTENDING' column to see what you needed to improve on.

Give one student a suggestion for improvement on their writing. Keep in mind the paragraph structure and the givens.
