AT HOME STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES

Student-Parent-Teacher

This weekend will be a busy one for students. Students will be completing their at home student-led conferences with parents. Parents, please take 20-30 minutes and sit down with your child to celebrate his or her learning! An e-mail has been sent to you in regards to what your child will review with you from their learning folder. For a general idea of what the conference could look like, click here to watch a video. #TheLearningNeverStops!

IMPORTANT:
1.) STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES: Parents, please complete with your child over the weekend.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) READING: 30 minutes.

2.) FRENCH:

Completing your filming and communicate with your partner to get most of it completed over the weekend.
Due on Wed

3.) FRESHGRADE:

Upload your conference sheet to FreshGrade
Copy and paste your PAR to the Conference activity on FreshGrade.

4.) NOVEL APPROACH/READING:

Upload your final document to FreshGrade (screen shots or actual file)
Things to include:
- 3 gift of words and 2 thinking and learning questions (use the criteria from your picture book packages at the beginning of each section)
- powerful response using the revised criteria

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

You will be completing your at home conference this weekend. Please post a paragraph sharing how it went with your parents!
LEARNING INTENTION: I can post a paragraph clearly explaining how my student-led conference went.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format: intro/body/conclusion
2.) Conventions of Writing (Givens): spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation.
3.) Body: Include 3 supporting points about what you did with your parents and what they said to you about your learning.
4.) Post your paragraph here.
5.) Upload your conference sheet (initialled/signed) to FreshGrade.
6.) Copy and paste your paragraph from the PAR to the 'AT HOME CONFERENCE' activity on FreshGrade as evidence you have completed your conference with your parents.

Today, I had the student conference with my parents. This was a new experience since I don't really talk that much. first I talk about the big six and it was going well my parents were being understandable with what I was saying, Then with my habits they do think I am underestimating them like about the video games one, and finally for the assessments they did tell a lot about how I should always try to do my work. In conclusion, they defiantly want me to improve in some stuff.

Have you ever just sat down with your parents and showed them what you were doing in school, on a regular basis? I doubt that many people do. That is why student-led conferences can be so important; they help your parents catch up on what you are doing. This weekend, I had a quick student-led conference. Overall, I think that the conference went well. We followed all of the steps and completed all of the necessary components. Firstly, I explained the Big 6 Learning Principles in my own words. We blew through this quickly, so I went on to explain the selected assignments that I had written reflections on. Only a few questions were asked, such as, "What did you do in this?" or "Did you enjoy doing this?" After this, I showed my work displayed in the Learning Folder, and explained the learning tags, and why I chose to put them on certain assignments. Once again, my parents only asked simple questions, like, "How long did this take?" or "What is this?" Finally, my parents merely looked through my work while I explained what each one was. In short, my parents decided that I was doing okay, and we ended the conference there.

Student conferences are to show what you are doing in school. Even though, a student conference is not an often thing I do with my parents, this weekend, I spent time doing a student conference. First, we went over the Big 6 Learning Principles. I explained each one. Then, I showed my parents my learning highlights and my behaviour checklist. I also showed my parents my powerful responses - “When I was Eight” and “Secret Of The Dance”, the five paragraph essay and my math tests. After that, I explained the learning tags and the assignments the learning tags were clipped with. My parents said okay for pretty much all of my work and they didn’t ask any questions. The student conference was fine.

Students may think that student-led conferences are tedious. Frustrating. Too much work. However, these conferences actually benefit a student in a variety of ways, such as showing the parents who you are as a learner, how you have grown throughout the semester, and how you want to grow moving forward; this all leads to the ultimate goal of ownership because students are taught to pave their own path of learning through student-led conferences. Yesterday, I had my student-led conference with my mom, and it worked out very well. Firstly, I started with explaining what the Big 6 Learning Principles were and how it helps me learn. Going through each of the steps, I showed how all of it led to ownership, which is taking responsibility of your own learning. Then, I moved on to showing my mom one learning artifact of each subject. Starting with my essay on the Metaverse, I explained how I was proud of it because I wrote something I was passionate about – technology. My mom said that she was impressed with my writing and thought that the topic was very interesting. Furthermore, I showed my mom how I applied my knowledge of electricity and magnetism in our science class to create my own version of a wheelchair; I explained how it worked using my background knowledge of electricity and magnetism. Commenting that she was proud how I had accomplished a fairly challenging activity, my mom suggested that I could even make a 3-D model to further illustrate how it would function. Finally, another key component of our conference was the French Cooking Video Project. After watching my video, my mom said that she was very happy with the end result and found it very engaging to watch. In conclusion, I think my conference went pretty smoothly, and I am proud of what I have accomplished this semeseter.

Self-assessment: I can change some wordings and check my spelling in some areas.

Students think that student led conferences take a very long time, too much work but the truth is that these conferences can have a good cause for students in many ways which are showing that you are a good learner to your parents. I have already shown my conferences to my parents. I explained everything about my post a response, science magnetism, my math test about decimals, mapping, underground railroad, pop art, and novel approach. My Mother said that I am doing good and I should keep up the good work. My Mother also said that they think that I am a person gaining lots of knowledge. Finally she said that I can get even more higher marks. I also told her about the big 6 learning principles. I am grateful to gain knowledge because I am able to be responsible for myself of the ownership.
