Wouldn't it be awesome to have a gym teacher who is an actual track & field player? What about an Olympic athlete? Barbara Howard taught at Strathcona School, and she was both of these things. Howard was fast as a kid, and in 1938 she set a new record for the 100 yard race. When she was 17, she travelled all the way to Australia, and got a lot of attention because she was a black female athlete. She won a silver and a bronze medal, but sadly came in sixth in the 100 yard race. She went home feeling like she disappointed Canadians. She wanted to race again, eager to get a gold medal, but the 1940 Olympics were cancelled because of World War II. When the next Olympics finally came, she had already retired and earned a degree in education. She was eventually inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and she died in January 2017.

The year is 1938, and Barbara Howard, a black female athlete, has broken the speed record of the British Empire Games by a tenth of a second. From a young age, Barbara Howard was known for being incredibly fast and was often chosen first for races in school. At the age of 17, she was chosen to be a part of the Canadian team to take part in the British Empire Games. During the competition, she won a silver and bronze medal, but she scored sixth in the 100m dash and was unsatisfied. She wanted to compete in the 1940 Olympics but was unable to compete for the next 10 years, ending her career. In 1959, she earned a Bachelors degree of education at UBC and started to teach in the field of education. She helped many underperforming children become successful people using her various creative strategies throughout her career. In 2010, she received an award for her dedication to changing the lives of people positively and was added into the Burnaby and BC sports hall of fame. She was awarded with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 and finally, in 2015, she was added to the Canada sports hall of fame. She passed away two years later at the age of 96. I think that she was a great inspirational figure in Canadian History and that her actions will continue to affect the country positively.

She was the first black female athlete to represent Canada in international competition. Do you know who "she" is? Yes, it is Barbara Howard! Other than this wonderful achievement, she has several accomplishments. For example, Barbara Howard became the first African-American to be hired as an educator by the Vancouver School Board, teaching physical education at Lord Strathcona Elementary School according to educ.ubc.ca. Also, in 1938, in grade 11, she ran a 100 yard sprint in a extraordinary number of 11.2 seconds to qualify for the British Empire Games, which beat the Games' record by a tenth of a second!! Later, in 1959, she will earn a Bachelor of Education at UBC and took a new path in education. She taught in various schools. Hastings, Henry Hudson, Lord Strathona and Trafalgar elementary schools more than 40 years. 51 years later from earning a Bachelor of Education at UBC, Howard was recognized by the Vancouver Park Board with a Remarkable Women Award for “her passionate dedication to inspire others to make a positive difference in their community.” She was inducted into both the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame and the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2013, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and in 2015, she was welcomed as one of “The Legends” in the Canada Sports Hall of Fame. Finding way for your passion so intently despite those who watch and judge you may be difficult through insecurities and the many obstacles to overcome, but Barbara Howard proves this to be wrong as she took on running and became one of the world’s fastest woman. Moreover, Barbara Howard’s perseverance towards the track bursted through with support from her fans who showed no discrimination toward her skin colour; this was a huge accomplishment as races were still in debate in the past, though it could frequent with today. With this in mind, soon, Barbara as a teenager travels to Australia to participate in the British Empire Games, representing Canada. In addition, she won 2nd place, 3rd place and 6th place in the 100 metres dash, as a young girl, this was a big achievement, though she remained unsatisfied and was determined to take on the field again to win gold for Canada. Sadly, World War II had begun and she was given no chance to take vengeance as the Olympics had cancelled. Soon, by the time the Olympics had returned which was 10 years later, Barbara had already graduated, earning a bachelor’s degree at UBC, then she began to continue her life in the line of education. Throughout this time, she was able to help students who weren’t doing the best in class and change their way, as her strategies underwent, they would soon become successful people when they grew up. After, in the year 2010, she was added to the Burnaby and BC sports hall of fame and soon, she passed away, January 2017. As a result, her death was a big lost to her followers and her successors that learned from her, though nonetheless, through her actions that stiffened with confidence, it was clear to see she had no regret.

Being a woman, especially a woman of colour, was hard back then! As it is now, but not like back then. When Barbara Howards was younger, she was known for her speed, and she would win lots of medals in track and field, but when she got older something amazing happened! It was grade 11, and Barbara won some qualifying races for the British empire games, and beat the record by 0.1 seconds. This then put her on the Canadian team! She then arrived in Australia, and as being a black female athlete, she became a media sensation. In the team relays, she won a bronze and a silver, but in the hundred yard dash, Barbara came in sixth. When Barbra was in grade 11, she participated in some of the qualifying races for the British Empire games and beat beat the record. This put her into the Canadian team for the 1938 British Empire games in Sydney, Australia. When she got there, she won a silver medal in the 440yd and a bronze in the 660yd. When it got to the 100yd dash, Barbra got 6th place. 10 years later, she retired from track and got a education degree in the UBC. Growing up in a time of racism Barbara Howard still managed to life a accomplished life. Growing up Barbara Howard was always known as a fast person winning races and would always be picked first for relay teams, but her life changed when she ran some British Qualifying races from the “British Empire games” then came the first accomplishment, she beat the games record by one tenth of a second and it may not seem a lot but it is actually faster by a whole new level, and that race got her in the Canadian Team. She was also a very respected colored woman and in the old days being respected and being black was very hard to do. She was eager to redeem herself but the WW2 totally cut in time for the Olympics and when it reopened 10 years later Barbara was a teacher at Strathcona School. And in 2012 she was inducted into the BC sports Hall Of Fame which is a huge deal! I think Barbara Howard was one of the most important part of the black history is because i think sports was one of the most exciting events back in the days and being black and beating a record must’ve helped the way that people thought about them and I think it was really important. So to sum up, Barbara Howard was a track runner, a teacher, a famous black woman and a very important figure in Cannadian history and i think she really was one of the luckier people to not have everyone making fun of her.

When she was in grade eleven, she ran a 100-yard sprint in 11.2 seconds to qualify for the British Empire Games. This time broke the Games’ record by a tenth of a second. During the Games, she won a silver and bronze medal in relays, but scored sixth place in the 100-yard dash. Sadly, her next chance, the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo was canceled due to WWII. One fast woman was named Barbara Howard, we had learned about her today. she was born on May 8th 1920, Barbara was good for a long time until the Olympics when she was put in 6th place, her next chance was in 1940 but ww2 cancelled it so :), By the next one came around she had retired and became a teacher for the next 40 years, she taught many students who became successful. Soon she got into the hall of shame or fame, unfortunately she passed on in 2017 January 26th. The world had lost yet another woman who was very successful. :)

Which person comes to your mind when you think of someone who is incredibly fast at running? For me, someone that comes to my mind when I think of this is Barbara Howard. Now you may ask, who is Barbara Howard? She was a Canadian athlete and sprinter and is believed to be the first Black female athlete to represent Canada in international competition. Barbara Howard was born on May 8, 1920 and died on January 26, 2017 at the age of 96. And not to mention, one of the fastest women in the world! Barbara was known for her speed even at a young age at her school and her passion soon grew more and more as she got older, and was soon qualified for the British Empire Games held in Sydney Australia and beat the record. However, Barbara wasn’t pleased and was disappointed in herself when she scored sixth in the 100m dash. Since Barbara was unsatisfied with herself and thought she was doing a bad job representing Canada, she vowed to do better and was determined to win gold next time. Unfortunately, the competition was cancelled due to World War ll, and when the Olympics were held again (which was 10 years later) Barbara had already graduated, which she then earned a Bachelor’s education degree at UBC and became the first visible minority to teach in Vancouver. Nonetheless, she continued her journey in this path and I think her achievements during her lifetime is vey inspirational to those who have a passion towards sports, running, racing etc just like Barbara herself.

Have you ever heard of a marvellous African American women named Barbra Howard? Well, she was an amazing athlete that ran for the Canadian team when the British Empire Games was happening. Even though at that time, racism has been going on frequently, Barbra wasn't pulled down by all the offensive comments and i think that even made her stronger because she knew that she had to prove others wrong. As stated earlier, when she was around 17 years old, she was chosen to be a contestant running for the Canadian team for the British Empire Games. When her performance sheet came, she won silver and bronze, however, she came in 6th for the 100m sprint. For a regular person to be able to achieve this much is unimaginable, however, she was still disappointed of how she performed and felt that she was a bad influence to all the Canadians. She was determine to achieve gold, just at the same time, World War II happened and that forced Barbra to end her career. Even though Barbra couldn't achieve her goal, she started heading towards getting a bachelor. In 1959, after a few years of hard work, she was able to earn the Bachelor of Education in UBC. That lead her to be a teacher that helped students that needed more support. She explains to all the students in a creative way that guided students to success. At around 2012 she was being recognised because of how much she contributed to the community. She was inducted into the BC sports of fame which was incredible. In conclusion, I think that Barbra Howard inspired plenty of people because of her determination because she modelled to us no matter how hard something is, if we try our best, we will always succeed.

Wouldn't getting a gym instructor who is a real track & field athlete be awesome? What about a competitor from the Olympics? Barbara Howard was teaching at Strathcona school, and she was doing all of those things. Howard was swift as a child, and she set a new record for the 100-yard race in 1938. She traveled all the way to Australia when she was 17, and received a great deal of publicity because she was a black female athlete.She proceeded to follow her objective of having gold in spite of this. Unfortunately, the World War 2 games were cancelled. Nonetheless, in an international sporting competition, she was the first black woman to play for Canada. But just imagine having a gym instructor who ran in track and field not that would be awesome.

One of the fastest women in the world is Barbara Howard. She was born on May 8th 1920, she was the fastest in her class, incredibly she was able to run 100 yards in 11.2 seconds and was invited to compete at the British empire games in Sydney, Australia at the amazingly young age of 17. Unfortunately she didn't get the gold metals but she won 1 silver, and 1 bronze. She felt bad for her country, later on she had a chance to compete in the Olympics but it was cancelled out due to WW2 that was going on at the time. She went to university at UBC (the university of British Columbia) and graduated, she was soon hired as an educator but it was harsh because of racism, she worked as a P.E. teacher for 43 and retired. She passed away on January 26th, 2017. Barbara Howard was a incredible figure in history and whoever was taught by her, were extremely lucky.

Faster than dozens of people, Barbara Howards was a Canadian black female who was abnormally fast! At a young age, Barbara Howards was faster than an average being. At some part, Barbara had actually been one of the most fastest beings in the world! It had been tough being black, and gaining so much recognition. But, even then, Barbara tried to keep her goal. It started when Barbara was selected to be part of the Canadian British Empire Games. She did fabulous for the first two races, but when it was up for the 100 meter sprint, she merely won and placed 6th. Barbara went back home feeling disappointed and a disgrace to Canada. She didn't want this happening again so she stayed courageous. She worked hard and was planning to participate in the upcoming race in Tokyo but due to World War 2, it had been unfortunately cancelled. Barbara retired from track to become a teacher and skipped the race in Tokyo that had been postponed ten years later! At the age of 91,Barbara received more recognition and later when onto the BC Sports of Fame. In short, Barbara succeeded many things in life from her perseverance as well as her unbreakable determination.

When we see a a teacher we won't expect them to be a olympic athlete, and one of the fastest people in the world. Barbara Howard was all of that. Barbara Howard was the first black female athlete to be representing Canada. That's absolutely crazy especially for a 17 year old. She was crazy fast and still had the potential to have gotten faster. In 1959 she got a bachelor for education. She taught at the school for more than 4 decades. Meaning that she had the potential to teach 2 generations. Barbara Howard especially helped kids who were extremely brilliant but was under performing. In 2010, a decade ago she got the attention she deserved, getting recognized by the Vancouver park board. In 2013 she gotten the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and in 2015 she was known as a legend in Canada Sports Hall of Fame which is kind of a big deal. Overall Barbara Howard was someone who achieved more than a lot of people and one of the people who has hold a national record and worked majority of her life away from the sports and running industry.

She is an athlete and an educator, born on May 8th, 1920 in Vancouver BC and died January 26th of 2018. According to thecanadianencyclopedia.ca, Barbara Howard is believed to be the first Black female athlete to represent Canada in international competitions.” At 17, Howard was recruited for the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney, Australia. She ran 100 yards in 11.2 seconds, one tenth a second faster than the games record. She earned her name as the first black female to compete for Canada. She got a silver and bronze medal and placed 6th place. She felt as if she had let Canada down. So, she started preparing for the next event, but it was canceled due to WW2. It opened 10 years later when she had already retired. She did things that changed Canadian history and will be remembered on in future generations.

Think about your gym teacher, imagine if at one point they were the fastest woman in the world? Barbara Howard was born on May 8th, 1920, and she was the first black female athlete to represent Canada, and she won a silver and bronze medal, although she wanted to get a gold. She wanted to get a gold next time but since WW2 happened, the olympics got cancelled and by the time it reopened, she had already retired from being an athlete. She later started teaching as a gym teacher and she was the first visible minority to by hired by the Vancouver School Board. She sadly died on January 26th, 2017.

What would you feel if you became the first person to achieve something that other people couldn't? I would feel really happy. Even though achieving one thing is really hard, Barbara Howard achieved many things. She was born in May 8th, 1920. She was the youngest of the five children. She was fast at a very young age and was the first pick for relay races. When she was in Grade 11, she ran the qualifying races for the British Empire games, and the beat the game record by 0.1 seconds. Because of that, she became the first black female athlete to represent Canada in international competition. In the competition, even though she got silver and bronze medals for the relays, she became 6th for the 100-feet dash. She was ashamed of herself because of not getting a Gold medal. The next international competition was the 1940 Tokyo Olympics, but it was cancelled because of World War II. She also became the first person of color to be hired as an educator by the Vancouver School Board. She taught Physical Education (P.E.) in Lord Strathcona Elementary School. She taught in four schools, teaching more than 40 years. In 2010, Howard was recognized by the Vancouver Park Board, "A Remarkable Women Award". In 2013, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2015, she was welcomed as one of “The Legends” in the Canada Sports Hall of Fame. Even though she had these accomplishments, Howard passed away on January 26, 2017 at the age of 96. She and her accomplishments will be remembered forever in our Canadian History.

Do you ant to know how Barbara Howard acted like a bridge for the black lives. By beating records at such a young age to get her noticed by the other people like in 1938 for the British Empire games. Also this led it so she can get two medals for Canada in the Olympics. This all lead her to be recognized as a bridge like in the Canada Sports Hall of Fame.

If you ever thought of the first ever fastest black woman in the world I can tell you about it. Barbara Howard was born in May, 8th, 1920. Barbara was the youngest in her family. Fast forward to when she’s in eleventh grade Barbara I think did 100 yards the fastest out of everybody and when she travelled to Sydney Australia to be on the Canadian team is the 38th British empire. Barbara got a silver and bronze it the stadium. When she got back home she didn’t talk about the game because she was ashamed she didn’t get a gold medal. She wanted to do it again for a gold medal but is was canceled due to World War Two. When it opened again TEN YEARS LATER she had already retired from track and got a teaching degree, and after all of that at 91 years old she got the Recognition she deserved.
