Being kind is something we all need to do more of. Watch this 7 minute read aloud and SYNTHESIZE and EVALUATE it using your reading strategies to come up with the big idea.
Remember, synthesizing and evaluating is when you use all your reading strategies to come up with an understanding of the BIG IDEA (message the author wants you to take away).
Remember, everyone will have their own perspective on what the BIG IDEA will be.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can synthesize and evaluate my use of reading strategies to come up with the big idea of the story.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (hook, body, and conclusion)
2.) State what you think the BIG IDEA is.
3.) You must LIST 2 reading/comprehension strategies you used while you listened/read along with the story.
4.) You must also EXPLAIN and give 2 CLEAR EXAMPLES of how you used these strategies and how they helped you come up with the big idea.
5.) Check for the givens/conventions (spelling, capitals, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure).
6.) Give one student descriptive feedback on the above criteria. Do a self-assessment of your own paragraph using the criteria above.
7.) Edit/revise your work.

"Treat others the way you want to be treated." Would you be upset if someone said something rude to you? Or did something that would hurt you deeply? Being kind isn't something that we should do voluntarily, it should be essential and part of our everyday lives. A world of peace not only means to communicate and to stop all global problems, it also means to be kind to one another. Even if being nice is doing something small, because the smallest things can impact everyone differently. Be it giving or sharing; maybe complimenting someone or helping them, etc. It doesn't take much to be kind, though it's not very simple either. With this in mind, I believe that the big idea of the story "Be Kind" by author Pat Zietlow Miler and illustrator Jen Hill, means to as simple as to be kind. The message is as the title says, be kind. You may not be helping someone or solving someone's problem, but the little things are important too. Moreover, you can be kind in many different ways; it may sometimes mean to gather your courage and do something big like sticking up for someone, it could even mean to do something small and just help someone pick up their rubbish. Helping others show your respect and honesty. Your kind acts show your characteristics. It's important to realize that being kind doesn't mean that you've lost or your just doing something that wouldn't benefit others much, this is because you aren't only helping others, you are also helping yourself see the great things of being kind and it also shows you a sense of pride. You may not gain anything, but to sum up, you've helped someone in need, even if that person were to be you. I understood this from the book by making background knowledge connections and by visualizing. Using my background knowledge, I connected with the main character and remembered how greatly it felt to help someone. I also connected with the girl that was laughed at for spilling her grape juice, I once was laughed at for doing something silly from their perspective, though, what I was doing was serious and important to me. I was hurt greatly. Furthermore, I visualized the little girl that poured grape juice on herself and her feelings. I saw a heart that melted and hid away in a room. The melted heart boiled and looked as if it bled, the wound seemed deep. With this visualization, I understood that the little girl was mentally in pain and she was upset. These reading strategies helped me understand how the characters felt and why they felt that way. With this in mind, these strategies helped me find the big idea by allowing me to connect and understand the context, by also allowing me to get a feel.

when you say 'being kind is not something we should do voluntarily', i think you made a grammar mistake because if it is not voluntary then it means someone is being kind against their will. instead of 'being kind is not something we should do voluntarily' you could put 'being kind is not something we should have to be told to do'.

What does kindness mean to you? I’ve discovered that kindness comes in many forms that don’t always look “kind.” I’ve also discovered what counts as “right” and “good” to one person might not to the next. We all know kindness is important. But I think it’s also important to acknowledge that while often the kind thing we do is crystal clear, sometimes it’s a little murkier. It can be tricky to know what counts as kindness, towards ourselves and other people, and which behaviours might seem like kindness but do more harm than good. This book talks about what being kind can represent and mean to you. 2 strategies I used to understand the book were to infer and make connections. I inferred that the main character was going to help/talk about what happened and make her feel better. I thought this because there were many clues. First, she was asking questions about if she should apologize, second usually in books there is a happy ending, the second I made connections, when being nice I usually have to think before act. Since different people have different customs, u have to think about what you say. I made this connection because the protagonist says “purple is my favourite colour “. This did not help at all and maybe made it worse. Always be kind.

Great job Seth. Some improvements could be to explain some of your points. For example, when you say some kind behaviours may actually do more harm than good, you may need to add another sentence that explains what you mean by this or gives an example. Again, when you say: Since different people have different customs, u have to think about what you say. I made this connection because the protagonist says “purple is my favourite colour “. This did not help at all and maybe made it worse - You need to explain what you mean by this statement. Also the word "you" is not "u" so never use that in your writing. Add in a more solid conclusion and it will be much better. Great work :)

Treat others the way you want to be treated! Treating people bad is affecting yourself! All of these saying are very mean and not very kid. I think we can all improve some ways in being kind. Even though its impossible to not be mean or do anything wrong, its good to try our best. What kindness means to me is respect, friendship, family, sacrifice and helping others. I think that i am a very kind person (trying to be as humble as i can) and like i said, there’s no stopping to being kind!
Inference: I used inferences as my first reading strategies. I used this strategy by focusing on the book cover and inferencing what it means. So, when the video brought us up to the part where it showed the book cover, i didn’t look at the title and instead tried guessing what the book looked like it was going to be about. I inferenced the book being about helping others even if you do not really know who they are. To simplify that, basically i inferenced the book about helping others, so i was kind of on point but there is no wrong answer when it comes to inferencing. The reason i inferenced this was because it looked like that the small girl was helping the girl and they both looked happy even though it was raining and pouring. That’s why i chose helping others as my inference.
Visualization: I used visualizations as my second reading strategy. I used this strategy by imagining a detailed photo in my brain. In details, i imagined the sad girl with a sad and frustrated face a month ago with no friends in the middle of a field with it raining very hard (with no umbrella), side to side with a photo of her a month later, happy and enjoying her time with her new friend at the park playing tag with some other kids that they made friends with. That is my visualization!
Big Idea: I think the big idea of this story should be very easy to spot. I think that the big idea of this story is to simply just to be kind. Kindness to someone can change there entire life in several ways. It motivates them, makes them feel more welcome, helps them have more confidence, etc. The reading strategies (visualizations and inferences) helped me find the big idea by helping me understand what the story is and just overall get more of a feel of what the story is really about.

I was a bit confused so I rewatched that scene and realized that she wasn't reading off the book, but she was speaking out of her own heart. I used connections by thinking how when the girl said that purple said that was her favourite colour to Tanisha, she just made her feel worse. For this part:

"In a world where you can be anything, be kind." In the book BE KIND it taught us that any small act of kindness can make a big impact on someone. The story was about a little girl named Tanisha. One day at lunch she spills grape juice on herself and everyone laughs except one girl. The other girl wonders what kind thing she could do to make Tanisha feel happy. There are so many different things you can do to be kind even it might seem like that is just a waste of time " no act of kindness however small is ever wasted." Even just remembering to say someones name after you say hi could make someones day. I think the big idea is to always spread kindness because a small act can as it says in the video, join other small things to make a big difference. "Kindness, it costs nothing, but means everything."

What is kindness to you? Kindness is a lot more than being nice, Kindness is doing stuff for others (simp) and is sometimes a hard practice for others. We feel many emotions and sometimes they are mixed emotions like happy then furious, and others to make it harder for some people. It takes a little to make someone happy and 1 tiny bit to make them furious. I don't understand what was the purpose of the video for me.

Does kindness ever give back to you? It always will, even if you don't think it will, you can't run from the embrace of kindness. What is the big idea of the book "Be Kind"? I will tell you what I think the big idea is. The book "Be Kind" is a book about a girl named Tanisha and her spilling grape juice all over her new dress. Our main character feels bad about her because her mom always told her to be kind. She tries to help her but it never works as she questions what being kind really mean. It can mean anything that is nice like complimenting someone, helping someone in need, saying thank you, etc. She decided to give Tanisha a purple painting to make her feel better and Tanisha hangs it on her wall. I think the big idea of this story is spreading kindness. You can do so many things to someone to make them feel good. Kindness can spread from a single act of it. I got this big idea from my background knowledge a.k.a connections and inferences. I made a connection to the video that we watched for the PAR about spreading kindness and how it can lead all the way back to you. I used inferencing in one of the text where Tanisha spills the grape juice. I thought that she would be hamulated and sad because she spilled it all over her new dress and the whole class laughed about it. That's just my thoughts of the book "Be Kind", what do you think is the big idea? And always remember, be kind. :)

Kindness. It is a skill. You have to learn how to be kind to one another. In the video read aloud that we all watched, a girl named Tanisha spills grape juice on her new dress. Everybody laughs at her. Except one girl. This girl then thinks about ways that you could be nice to others. Throughout the rest of the book, we read a list of all the things that we can do to be kind to others. I think that the Big Idea of this book is: there are many acts of kindness. No matter how big or small. Small acts of kindness, such as holding a door open for someone, will still make people feel better. Kindness is something that everyone will encounter at least one time in their life, though most people are encountered with someone being kind to them more than one thousand times in their life.

I think they laughed because they thought she was really clumsy.
This helped me understand that kindness was something that not everybody is good at. Being kind can be hard. In this case, Tanisha was sad because the children did not think about how she would feel if they laughed. This helped me realize that although there are many very easy ways of being kind, you have to think before acting.

Inference

It is not always easy to be kind. Sometimes you have to sacrifice things. Like if your sibling wants to do something with you and you don't want to do that thing, and you still do it with them just because you love them and want to make them happy. This helped me understand that sometimes acts of kindness might be hard to do, but by still doing them, you make them more meaningful.

Although kindness is a skill, some people are just naturally kinder than others. So if you have a hard time being kind, just work on it and don't get be unkind to yourself over it.

Have you ever wondered what being kind really is? The concept of kindness differs with different people having their own unique values and perspectives, with many actions commonly considered as nice. In the story "Be Kind", by Pat Zietlow Miller, the protagonists classmate (Tanisha) spills her drink all over her clothes. While everybody else is laughing, the main character starts to think what kind things she could've done to comfort Tanisha and ultimately about how kindness is just a mass of small considerate actions. I believe that the big idea of the story is how simple acts of kindness can make someone feel happiness and how it spreads to everyone, including the person who initiated the chain reaction. Two reading strategies I used were making connections and visualizing. Firstly, I was able to make many connections with events that happened in the story. For example, when Tanisha first spilled her drink and everyone laughed, I thought that it was an incredibly realistic reaction from the students and I instantly made connections to how we always laugh at questionable things at school. When the protagonist said that "purple is my favourite colour", though it makes absolutely no difference in comforting Tanisha at all, I thought about how we also do some questionable actions that sometimes even makes the situation worse. Making connections allowed me to think about this book in a more realistic fashion to better understand how kind actions can impact someone in real life. Visualizing scenes was another reading strategy I used while listening to the story. I visualized somebody doing the kind actions that were listed in the book to better understand and connect with when I've done or seen someone do these things on a daily basis. I believe that visualizing is a great way to think about whether situations described in stories are realistic and actually helpful. Being kind feels incredible for both people, and we should all try to be kind to each other.

My understanding of The Big Idea is:

Being kind might be a little thing, but little things add up, and when little things add up, they make a big impact on something. If we are kind to each other it will make a big impact on our classes behavior, from our class it will move onto our school, and more...
(It will spread like a disease lol)

What helped me come to the big idea:

I watched the video multiple times and went back a cupule of times, that helped me understand the story. (I also found the visuals helpful)

The big idea of the book is that kindness is a important part of you life, soon you'll need to understand kindness in the future, the impact of kindness can change the people that may not understand kindness and then understand kindness better. some random acts of kindness can change a persons prospective and view of who some people really are, and helping others is the main frame of kindness. The reading and comprehension stratagies that I used were viewing the video over and over to get a better understanding of this book, the second is I thought and visualized someone getting bullied and that kindness is a important part of everyone's life. The first strategy helped me to see what the book is really about and how helping someone can make a difference in others lives. The second thing helped me to see what kindness could do if others thought about it for sometime or if they just learn how helping others can be done to achieve something like peace. The main thing that could change others prospectives of you is kindness and self-regulation, if you can change so can others.

How can you be kind? You can be kind in a lot of ways. You can pick up someone's eraser that fell on the ground, you can help people to tie their shoes. You can be kind in a lot of ways! In the book, called "Be Kind", by Pat Zietlow Miller, is a book about kindness. It states many examples how you can be kind. For this book, I think the Big Idea is that you don't have to do something complicated to do something, you can do something simple. The 2 reading/comprehension stratagies I used are rereading and connections. I reread (reWACHED) lot because I didn't understand. I reread to understand better and think what the Big Idea might be. The big idea i think is for this story is: that whatever you do you always try to be nice and not disclude others, in the story this kid thinks of everything that can be counted as "nice" but i dont think he gets the idea. Back then when he said "purple is my favorite colour" i think it wouldnt have worked since the girl could've took that as a hurtful thing or maybe because the other kids were laughing so she ran from the embarrasment since getting grape juice on yourself is really embarrasing. Now, thats not all i wanted to say, also. This boy thinks about all the things taht can be nice. And to be honest hes right they are very nice. So the big idea is: to be nice even if you get nothing in return. Now im not doing a summary of the story so thats the big idea. The strategy i used to find the big idea is: thinking and re watching. This might not be the correct one's im supposed to say. But this was really helpful. To be continued

Yes, you've got the big idea! I think the word you want is "exclude" not "disclude". Make sure to follow all the criteria - you still need a hook and a concluding sentence. Remember that the word "I" needs to be capitalized. Never use "i".

Treat people the way you want to be treated. My mom and dad would always tell me this saying if you wanted to be treated with respect you need to show it to others as well. What the big idea from my p.o.v is that if you treat people with kindness that kindness might be passed on to someone else. or maybe kindness means that if you use someones name they know that the kind gesture is going towards them. In short the B.I is to be kind to one another and for them to be kind back towards you.
