Today, we continued reading from 'THE BRIDGE HOME'. The students were overwhelmed with sorrow when they learned the younger sibling passed away. Students reviewed behavioural expectations for 'BOOK CLUBS' and did their best to follow the C-Chart they created. We continued learning about adding/subtracting decimal strategies in math and student completed their work, self-assessed their work, and completed any corrections they need to get done. In the afternoon, the students continued building their French vocabulary background knowledge and also sang some enjoyable songs.

'The Bridge Home', a book that clearly underlines the problems of poverty using characters to create a plot that resembles this situation; this book is about two children who run away from home given that their father physically and verbally abuses them each day. They run away to the big city which is crowded and attempt to find a place that could help them survive. They meet two boys and the four of them begin a long journey trying to earn money to provide their selves with shelter and food. Though, as they are soon chased off the streets and forced to live in a new place with what's left of their money, the main character's sibling gets sick and passes away. Moreover, I could relate to having someone very important to me pass away. I may not have had to go through such heart-breaking and violent events but I once lost my uncle to cancer which no one could treat him so that he could get better. Then, soon my uncle's father passed away and these two deaths caused a big change in my life because they were both very special to me. They had taught me many things which also created an impenatrable bond between us. Additionally, my uncle's father always knew my best interests and my uncle was always gentle and kind to my entire family, including me. To this day, I am grateful for everything they have done for me. Certainly, the main character can relate. After all, her sibling taught her how to create bracelets, new personalities and a better path. They gave her lots of motivation so that she could run away from her horrid home. Secondly, a connection I made between 'The Bridge Home' and 'A Dog's Journey' is that both the main characters ran from home because of their guardians making repulsive decisions and causing havoc in their lives. In conclusion, poverty is a huge problem around the world, especially in India (Where the story of the siblings base off, I think). I don't have any specific background knowledge about poverty but I know that it is the reason why many people work through lots of hard labor each day causing terror and stress in their lives. How would you survive if the placed you lived in was a land of poverty?

We've all been reading "A bridge home" and have read many things about the book. Something I read that I will remember is how Viji died, I can't make a text to self connection, but I can make many text to text connections. For example, in a book I was reading, called A Long Road, the main characters friend dies due to drug dealing gangs, and when I heard how Viji died in the book, it reminded me of this. They aren't the exact same thing but they are similar, and they are both very emotional parts of the story. Viji dying will stick with me because of this connection I made, and is very heartbreaking. I'm very glad I can't make a text to self connection. And hope I never have to. Can any of you connect to this chapter in the book?

I can make a connection with the chapters that we read today, that is because not so long ago i lost my grandpa to the illness that we know as covid-19. Surprisingly things went down similarly. The very first day he got sick he started taking anti-antibiotics. Once he took the antibiotics the disease was suppressed but was also inhibited. Similar things happen in the book. Once Viji was sick she was given coughing tea, although the symptoms were suppressed I inference the disease was inhibited and that is why the disease developed pneumonia. Were the difference was made was when he was sick he went to a hospital only two days later and not a week or so later. Unlucky though he died. He was healthy and active and still was a dentist at the age of 77. (he died at age 77) It was not only his flout though for taking antibiotics or the fact that the disease in my country was originated from Italy were mutations hit hard. My country is also a second world country so the most things are normal but things that take much more investment such as hospitals are hard to make. Doctors are underpaid and there is few hospitals. Doctors would be greedy and only worked for who paid most and just like in most countries there is a big gap between first classes and second classes so the only people to get cured would be the rich. Worst of all getting information would be near to impossible if you would not give money. So overall my grandpa was given the wrong medication and that caused his death.

Death is unescapable in life. In the book " THE BRIDGE HOME" Viji died of illness, which reminded me of my great grandfather died of old age. Although the reasons of death is different, it still reminded me of it and I think it is very heart breaking to lose a family. I also connected to the virus that is spreading and massacring people all over the world and I hope no one in my family including me will get infected by it. Losing Viji was a heartbreaking experience for Rukku, but the determination to not tell her mom about her death is very admirable. This was what I thought while reading The Brige Home.

What are your thoughts about today’s chapter of The Bridge Home? To me, after learning about how the main character’s sibling dies from a sickness, it shatters my heart and I can say that I feel incredibly sorry for them. I cannot fully relate to this chapter however, I can make deep meaningful connections of the time when I lost my grandpa to a sickness too. I was in fourth grade and I was walking home with my brother and my mom until we suddenly got a phone call from the hospital to inform us about my grandpa. Every month or so, my family would go visit my grandpa at a graveyard(?) I’m not quite sure what they’re called but we would go visit him from time-to-time to remind us of him. Additionally, It was very heartbreaking to me and these events took a long time for me to recover, especially because I couldn’t say goodbye and I wish I’d spend more time with him before he passed away. It was very traumatizing for my grandma and soon after this happened, my grandma got cancer and she had to fight this off for a few years, but luckily she is now cancer-free and I can tell that she is doing much better now. I can tell that this chapter is one of the most important chapters of the book because of the events occurring and how emotions run through the words. I can make a connection between ‘The Bridge Home’ and the book ‘Other Words for Home’ because although these books have their own twist to them, a similarity is that both main characters struggled with finding their own definition of what is so called “home” to them. Additionally, the main character also has to adapt to her new environment and survive. Unfortunately, the world is populated with many people suffering from this issue and barely making enough to supply their own needs. It is certainly concerning, however there is only so much we can do. What are your connections to this book?

I connected with this because I could understand how she must have felt. People who are close to me that are hurting and it makes me sad because I can't really fix it, so like the character in the book I was helpless. In addition, I made a text to text connection too. What happened in the book "the bridge home" we learned that Viji lost Rukku to a sickness and stayed strong and kept on going, I have connection when my grandma died of cancer at age 75, I was really sad but I still moved forward. Another connection is the virus called covid-19, it has worsened and lots of people are infected, I am really worried if I get infected or if my family is too. It would be really hard to handle if any of my family or relatives get covid and die from it. Moving on is what everyone has to if anyone dies. Overall this is a hard time to handle when someone dies because of this virus.

Here in Vancouver, in our lives, it can be easy to feel like getting sick, and maybe dying, is not a possibility. However, in some places, where the gap between the rich and the poor is very large, it can be common. In the book The Bridge Home, the main character's sister gets sick, and sadly dies. A connection I made to this is the normally none of the main characters die. However, I once read a book where a lot of them did. It surprised me, but I also noticed how it added to the story a lot, and contributed to the feel of how awful things can be sometimes. Overall, even though most books stay away from killing their main characters, sometimes it can really help get the feel across that life's not fair, and that may be what you're going for.

Death is something that everyone will meet in life. In The Bridge Home, Viji's sister, Rukku dies from an illness. It reminded me of all of the families that lost a loved one because of the covid pandemic because, they were probably very sad after the deaths and both Rukku and people from around the world died from a disease. This also reminded me of Bridge To Terebethia because both Viji and Jesse ( the main character of Bridge To Terebethia ) lost someone they loved, but their reactions were different. Overall losing a family member or friend would not feel good and it could change your life forever.

Have you ever had a family member, or a close friend, who died? It's really sad, isn't it? In the book, "THE BRIDGE HOME", Viji died because of a certain illness. Rukku was very devastated after Viji's death. My grandfather died because of a illness too. He died because of cancer. He died when I was 3, so I don't remember much about him but I remember going to his funeral. It was a very rainy day. Now, more and more people are dying because of covid, and lots of their family members/friends are going to be sad because of their loss of a family member/friend. I hope covid will be gone soon so less people would be sad. Overall, death of a close person is a very sad thing and everybody might experience this.

The only thing guaranteed in life is death. Viji in the book ‘ The Bridge Home’ dies of a sad illness. While reading this depressing part of the book I made a connection with oplossing my great grandpa. My great grandfather was a really nice man. When visiting him he would secretly give me candy, and we would go on nice vacations with him. Sadly, he died. I was super sad about his passing. My great grandmother got really sad, and sick. She would say ‘ I see Ope right behind the bushes’. I remember my mom asking my grandmother how to respond to such a comment. Life brings many obstacles, for Viji it was death. For you it could be... well who could tell. You will just have to find out.

There are many places where people die every single day. We are lucky to live in a country with all of our basic needs to survive. Today, we continued to read our book "The bridge home", where Rukku's sister dies. It was kind of sad to see this happen, especially since she was the sister of the main character. When this happened, it reminded me of when my dog died. His name was Gemini, he was a Border Collie. He was my best buddie since I was born. My dad got Gemini in 2002, before I was even born. He was the best dog i ever had (the only dog I ever had). He was smart and kind, always guarding me from people. There was once where my Auntie was holding me as a child, and Gemini was walking around her giving her a glare. He was a active dog too, he loved doing tricks and loved swimming. The thing is, Gemini died in 2015, when I was 7. This hurt me so bad, if you have a dog who died when you were young, you wouldn't be able to remember it that much. He died when I was 7, I was so sad to see him go, he was around the age of 15 in human years. I loved him so much. Anyways even though Gemini was a dog, he was also my family.

I also realized that a lot of people are using overall in there concluding sentences.

Having to live in Vancouver is a privilege for me. Imaging living in a place where you'd have a empty stomach almost everyday. In the book "A bridge home", Viji's little sister Rukku sadly past away by a horrible cold. Having to here that from the book today, shocked everyone in our class! Imaging having to lose your sibling at the same time when you have trouble keeping yourself alive. After listening to the story, I remembered the day where my great grandma passed away. Although I didn't see her because she passed away during night time. I still remember waking up alone with my sister not knowing where our parents went. After my parents came back from the hospital, I was devastated of the things I heard. That is why when I heard that Rukku died, I knew how hard it is to keep on moving forward. In conclusion, we should all use our time wisely because you never know what's going to happen in the future.

Before we start, I was NOT overwhelmed b sorrow. Not even close, i was actually like: "eh, thats fine. Someone would've died or it would be unrealistic"

Anyway, when "You" died, I actually made a deep meaningful connection, my mom's side grandparents both died at a reasonable age of 80-86 i was very sad, when my grandpa died. I was younger and i didnt realize what happened until i grew up. I was very sad he died, and when my grandma died. I was so sad that i got very sad. But im fine now because its what happens and if you are sad about something like this then you should grow ip and deal with it! Crying wont solve a thing. Why?

About 150,000 people die every day, according to weforum.org. How many of those people died because they didn’t get the proper medical attention? How would you feel if your sibling died? I am sure that all good siblings would be devastated. It is extremely hard to lose anyone, but siblings are the hardest. Especially if you were very close to them. In the book “The Bridge Home” a girl loses her sister. Her sister died of a disease that would not have been as bad if they had had known more about the virus, and taken her to a hospital earlier. A connection I can make to this story. This sad part of the book is similar to in book seven of Harry Potter (Deathly Hallows), when Fred dies at the battle of Hogwarts. His siblings and parents are all devastated. His twin is never the same again. The only real difference is that the family had each other. They had the entire family and an extensive amount of friends to grieve with. In “The Bridge Home” there are only 4 people who are grieving. The father is abusive and the mother lives with him so they do not know that she is dead. The only person in my life that I knew well that died was my grandfather. He died when I was 4. I didn’t really understand what was happening so I was t that sad. But now when I think about it, I am sad that he didn’t get to be with us as we went through school, and that he died at a young age of 66. When I think about it, he died very suddenly. Just a few days before he died we went to the PNE together. He bought us snow cones and Aaron (age 2 at the time) ate too much and it came back out. The saddest part? That’s my only memory of him. Two years ago, all three of my other grandfather’s pets died. They all died within a few months. I remember Crystal (Shiba Inu) died at the age of 17. A few days later, my grandpa’s other dog, Panda (Saint Bernard-Great Dane) died of cancer at the age of 8. Two months later, their cat Kitty died of old age as well. I remember being saddest about Kitty because she was the only one that I actually interacted with. This is because Crystal was blind and half deaf by the time I was born and Panda was just too big. Whenever I went to their house, I would sit outside for a few minutes and play with Kitty. When I look back, I feel bad for kicking a soccer ball at a blind dog and I wish that I had spent a bit more time with her. I have learned from these experiences, and I am going to try to spend more time with their new dog Yogi. He is only just about 1 year old so we still have several years with him. Of all these animals, I think I will be most sad when Yogi goes because he will be the dog that I will have the most memories about. Even though (according to weforum.org) 150,000 people die every day, about (says theworldcounts.com) 385,000 people are born every day. But we have to remember. Many of these people didn’t get proper help. We should try our hardest to reduce this number by helping the percentage of the people that could have survived if they got the help they needed.

Desperately trying to get money from the trash they picked and their beaded necklaces Rukku learned from before, but still being unstable in money and constantly facing problems. Soon, Rukku got sick of dengue fever and within days of buying useless medicines and selling their dog they reached out to Celina Aunty. But with the help of everyone, Rukku had fallen too ill and had died. I don’t relate to this a lot, I was lucky that everyone in my family I know hasn’t died yet, but in a way found a connection. My grandpa was a successful man, he was smart and didn’t fall for the behind-the-scenes type of stuff but despite all the money he’s made he spent it all on my grandma. My grandma likes taking checkups and before they left Canada she had wished to do so and they did, she had shown herself to have cancer and die in a month. My grandpa desperately tried to save her, he sold their house, constantly moved around the world trying to find doctors that were willing to treat her even though she was hopeless, after two years, she had died. The same as with Viji, he felt empty. He’s a great chef and would cook food for his friends when they meetup, but he didn’t have the emotion to cook it. It still pains him to think about it. I wasn’t alive though, so I have no personal hard emotions but it’s sad to think about, he like Viji, sacrificed many things to save them but in the end they still died.

Death is inevitable. However, it comes earlier for some people and later for others. We don’t have to worry about surviving in Vancouver, but people in many places aren’t so fortunate. In the story “The Bridge Home,” the main characters try to endure the terrible conditions of their country and succeed for a brief period. However, two of them get sick, and due to their lack of medicine and nutrition, one dies tragically. When reading this today, I felt sad and had this odd feeling of disbelief, for the main characters don’t die in most of the books I’ve read. I made a connection to this other book that I am currently reading. In that book, two of the main characters were hurt badly and both had to recover in a hospital. Just as it was with “The Bridge Home,” one of them dies from his injuries while the other recovers. Such events where one loses a loved one happen regularly across the world, especially in current times because of COVID-19. I couldn’t make a personal connection to this because I never lost someone who I knew well, but I can imagine how devastating it would be. Losing people we love is inevitable, and we can’t do much to stop it. Therefore, we should invest more time in accompanying these people while we still can and enjoy our lives. What are your opinions on this topic and what would you do if this happened to you?

Something very sad happened today in read aloud. Rukku's sister died:(.These two young girl leave their home because their parent didn't gave them the warm from family. They only have each other. But now, Viji was died, there is only Rukku to survive by herself without any sister and family's help. I don't know what is that feels like. But I can imagine how Rukku was so sad that time. She lost her confidence to keep surviving without any family. These are my thoughts. Thanks for reading :)

Today when we had the read aloud the younger sister died because of the illness and she also picked up Pneumonia ( I think ) witch made her case more complicated. She pasted one night in the hospital. I thought that main characters where not supposed to die in books or tv shows. I have lost my grandma and grandpa both died in the hospital, because of old age. It was devastating to hear that. I know how horrible that feeling is when you lose someone close to you it does not have to be a family member it could be a close friend. In short death is unavoidable it will come to everyone and it sucks for those how have to go early.

The book "The Bridge Home" tells us about two sisters who had ran away from home and became homeless. Unfortunately, the younger sister, Viji, died from an illness. It made me feel uncomfortable because Viji was a very cheerful child, that I had gotten a bit attached to. I connected with this story because when I was a baby, My grandpa on my dad's side passed away. I don't remember how he looked like and only saw him in photos. He passed away also from an illness. When Viji died it also got me really upset because I have two older brothers I love, and imagining if Viji was one of my brothers got me really sad. I'm really grateful to be living in Vancouver where we have clean water and food. Viji and her other sister, Rukku lived in a place where it wasn't as clean as Vancouver so it must have been tough for them. Death in unpredictable and even the people who are the nicest, and most caring can die. It isn't fair and it's devastating. The Bridge Home shows a lot of emotion and drama, telling us how some people have hard lives. If you are looking for a book with a lot of drama and sadness, you should try The Bridge Home.

The Bridge Home is a powerful book with lots of connections and visualizations that help readers connect with the book. A connection point in the book that really hit me was when Viji died of dengue fever, a disease spread by mosquitos. It reminded me of the time when I got Singapore Flu. My mom said I got it when I was around the age of 6. I myself don't remember the experience I had with it, but I'll list some symptoms that I might've experienced. I might've had swallowing pain, a decreased appetite, and weakness. Those symptoms do not sound good and probably sucked for little me. My case was not severe and was only a mild case, but some people can develop severe cases and die because of it. I'm lucky to be born in a middle class family with adequate healthcare and born without any immune deficiencies.

Today when we read “The Bridge Home”, the younger sister died because of phenomena and i think malaria. It’s really sad because if she got medical attention quicker she could have survived. A connection I made was that once i got a lot of mosquito bites on my arm and it hurt a lot, but it was easy for me because I had mosquito cream so it only hurt a bit, but she had nothing.
