Calculating Sale Prices

Today, the students continued learning about how to calculate percents using different strategies. They are learning about ratios, decimals, and fractions and how they relate to percentages. Tomorrow, the math lesson will be on calculating prices from products they may purchase when they go shopping. Students, make sure you bring a flyer with different products on them (Home Depot, Wallmart, Shoppers, Bestbuy, etc). Feel free to print one out online if you don't have any at your house. The flyers with discounts in percentages work best.

1.) MATH:

Pg 165 #1-10 + W/S Pg 48-51
Bring a flyer from the mail/newspaper/online to school tomorrow.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Guess what I heard? I head that H&M is having a sale, but only for 3 days! They are having a sale on jeans, pants, and socks. (HELPFUL VIDEO: Calculating sale prices)
The original prices are as follows: JEANS $70, SHIRTS $30, and SOCKS are $10 for 4 pairs.
The flyer says that the discount is 33% off any of the three items listed above.
Calculate the cost of purchasing any combination of the above items. You must choose 2 or 3 items and calculate how much the final cost will be. Today is also your lucky day because H&M said you don't have to pay any taxes!
Remember, this is a time limited offer and will expire tomorrow morning when the bell rings.
Use mental math if you can or calculate and do your best while showing your work. It is not easy to explain and show your thinking for math on a keyboard. This is why we must use our words to communicate our thinking as clearly as possible.
Check one other person's answer to see if they are correct and comment on their question to let them know if they need to fix anything.
Correct your own work if you made any errors.

I'm going to take the easy way out and purchase some jeans and a shirt. $70 + $30 = $100, and percentages are out of 100. So 100 - 33% = 67. I will have to pay $67.

Also, I hope H&M isn't getting in trouble for not taxing us. My mom says that's illegal... ;)

Um If they say if you dont need to pay taxes, they would take off an amount of taxes to what you payed so you're still paying it but the price is cheaper.

Idk how to find it but if you google it Im sure there will be an answer

When a store says no tax on purchase, the store pays the taxes on behalf of the customers. In your case children under 15 only pay GST (5%), so the store will keep $63.81 and submit $3.19 to the Federal Government.
$67/1.05=$63.81 This is the selling price that the store keeps.
$67-$63.81=$3.19 ($67*5%=$3.19) This is the GST for the government.

I'll buy jeans and a shirt which equals $100. Percentages are out of 100 so if I use the 33% discount which is 100 - 33 = 67. After the discount there's $67 left so I'll have to pay $67 now.

I was running out of things to wear cuz I had a massive growth spurt and a lot of shirts and pants I had were too small. After wearing the same sweaty,food stained shirt for 2 weeks in a row my dignity overthrew me. Also,it was a new year so why not start the year with new clothes?I went to The Children's Place and I saw that all the clothes there were WAY TOO SMALL! Of course,I thought I was 12 and practically a teen,I can't buy clothes from little kid stores any-more. I started to stroll across the mall,weaving in and out of stores until one place caught my eye. H&M had an AD posted up on their window. START THE NEW YEAR WITH FRESH CLOTHES! T-SHIRTS, FADED JEANS AND LONG SOCKS 33% OFF AND NO TAX!DISCOUNT PRICE $ !(Really? The discounted price had juice spilled all over,so I will have to do math.:-( )Select items only. reg price $30 for shirt,$ 70 for pants and$10 for socks. Well,I only have $70,so I'll see if I have enough $$$ to buy the clothes and the pants. Kevin.M and Ethan were also here,so because I suck at math I asked them.

I would buy jeans and some socks . And there are 33% off , so for jeans which is $70 and I have 100% - 33%= 67% (discount) 70x 67%=$46.9 . Also , for socks which is $10 , 10x67% = $ 6.7 ,so total I have to pay $ 46.9 + $ 10 = $56.9 .

so 70+30 is a really easy question... its 100 so the discount is 33% and 33% of 100 is 33. Waw I didn't know that?! And 100 subtract 33 is 77.

Now I have to pay $77! Come on I only have $15!

I'm going to get the shirts and socks.

1. Calculate price of shirt
So 30 (price of shirt) x 33 (discount) = 990
990 divided by 100= 9.90= $9.90

2. Calculate price of socks
So 10 (price of shirt) x 33 (discount) = 330
330 divided by 100= 3.30= $3.30

3. Add price of shirts and socks
$9.90 + $3.30 = $13.20

Did you know you can just simply add the price of the shirt and socks than calculate 33% of that and add it.

30+70=100
33% of 100 is 33
100-33=77

The price is $77.

Im bored so Imma do it with taxes.

10% of 77 is 7.7 (because 77/10)
1% of 77 is 0.77
2% of 77 is 1.54
7.70 + 1.54 = 9.24
$77+$9.24=$88.24
If you added taxes it would cost $88.24

Planning:
33% is one third, so the denominator is 3. Therefore you would try to find a total number that is divisible by 3, so you can do mental math without calculations.

Action:
I would buy a pair of jeans, a shirt, and eight pairs of socks, so the total would be $120 which is divisible by 3. After a 33% (⅓) discount, I would pay 67% (⅔) of the total price. Since there’s no tax, the final price that I pay is $80.

Clothing for children under 15 only pay GST (5%) not PST (7%), so the extra saving is $4. ($80*5%=$4)

So I want socks and jeans with will be 80$
10% of 80 is 8.0
8.0 times 3 equals 24.0
1% of 80 is 0.8
0.8 times 3 equals 2.4
24.0 plus 2.4 equals 26.4
26.4 subtract 80 equals 53.6
So the final price with the 33% discount would be $53.60

Now I'm getting more excited and my mom taught me lots of things about discounts in our daily lives.

~Seasonal discount: This is the discount we're doing. This discount is for a limited time.
~Quantity discount: This is when you buy a certain amount of something, you get a discount. For example, buy 10 pairs of socks and get a 10% discount.
~Educational discount: A student 15 or over can show their student ID and get a discount.
~Payment terms discount: A company or business can buy something and they will have to pay in 30 days, but to make them pay earlier in something like 10 days they'll get a discount of something like 2%. You can write that like this: 2% 10 Net 30. If the company has extra cash in the bank which didn't earn interest, it's better to pay and get a 2% discount.

Since I'm a relatively lazy person, and I wasn't at school today (because of my violin exam), I will take the easy way out, and buy a pair of pants, and a shirt. When you add the prices together, you get $100. Taking 33% off of $100 is easy, because you just subtract 33 from 100, which is $77.

So I will buy a shirt and some socks- together that is $40. To find 33% of 40 I will turn 33 into a decimal (0.33) and multiply that by 40. (0.33 x 40= 13.2) subtract that number from 40 (13.2 - 40 = 26.80) I will have to pay $26.80.
I think this is a completely different strategy then the one we learned at school... but it works. Oh well!

Let's just say I needed a pair of jeans (I actually hate those) and a shirt. Jeans cost 70$ and shirts cost 30$. When you add those together, 70+30=100. Since percentage is out of 100, you could subtract 33 from 100.

I'm just really lazy, and I'm really tired of math right now.

Call this an excuse and unnecessary complaint, but I think we have too much math today? We got a whole weekend to do 1 page in the textbook and 2 worksheets. I'm not complaining about that, but we only have a few hours for a page in the textbook plus 4 worksheets. Don't you think that's too much? Especially when I don't get most of it.. So maybe we could extend the time a little?

Combination 1:Jean+Shirt+Socks=53.9+23.1+7.7=$84.7
Combination 2:Jean+Shirt=53.9+23.1=$77

I would buy the jean and a shirt because it equals $100.00. Now what you do is subtract. $100 - 33% = $67. After the discount, the total price of the two items would be $67.00.

I will be buying the jeans and shirts. The shirts costs $30 and the jeans costs $70. $30 + $70 = $100 So now subtract $100 - 33% = $67 The total price I will be paying after the discount would be $67.
