History - Canadian Space Agency

In math, you are learning the importance of using different strategies to solve questions. You have learned how to use number lines to add and subtract integers and also how to use integer chips. Your post a response assignment today will be to write about these strategies. Read below and follow the instructions carefully. I have been so impressed with everyone and how they have been using their different strategies to solve their integer related questions.
STUDENTS/PARENTS: DON'T FORGET YOUR FIELD TRIP FORMS (2) AND YOUR MONEY!

1.) MATH:

Complete Pg 1 and 2 of your integer review booklets.
Use your number line sheets for the questions that ask you to use number lines. Don't forget to lable each number line so you know which question/page it is from.
Use a lined piece of paper for all your integer chip questions. Don't forget to draw out each step so it is clear what is happening in each question.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: No HW

3.) SCIENCE:

Watch this video on the history of the Canadian Space Agency

4.) POST A RESPONSE (THIS IS A QUIZ AND I WILL INCLUDE IT IN YOUR ASSESSMENTS ON FRESHGRADE!!!):

FOLLOW THE PAR INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY THIS WEEKEND! (QUIZ)
Choose one of the integer strategies you have learned in class and explain which one you prefer using.
If you choose number lines: Write a short paragaph (using transition words) to explain how to solve addition and subtraction questions
If you choose integer chips: Write a short paragaph (using transition words) to explain how to solve subtraction questions using integer chips.
Give one student a suggestion for improvement.
Make sure your response makes sense. Be sure to proofread it and to edit/revise it. If someone who had never learned about integers read your resoonse, would they be able to figure it out? If so, then you have probably done a great job!

The strategy I used for integers are:
- Integer chips
- Number line
Which one do I like more?:
Integer chips because I'm more used to them and they are fun!
I understand them more too.
How to solve Integer questions with Integer chips:
Eg. (-5) - (-10)
Firstly, Get some integer chips, you will need about 30 of them for this question. Secondly, make the first number, (-5) out of integer chips. Thirdly, make the second number, (-10) out of integer chips.
Don't forget to make the second pair have zero pairs (+10). Fourthly, Take away the ( -10) to leave it with (+10). Fifthly, cancel them out, ( match the positive with the negative numbers).
The answer will be ( +5).

The strategy I used for integers was Integer chips and number lines. The one I used the most was integer chips because it was more clearer than the number line.
How to Solve a Integer question with Integer chips:
Eg. (-5)-(-10) = ?
Firstly, you will need some integer chips for this way of solving questions. For this question, you will need about 30 Integer chips. Secondly, make the first number, (-5) out of integer chips. Thirdly, make the second number, (-10) out of integer chips. Make sure the second number have zero pairs. Fifthly, cancel the numbers out, If you do this correctly, you will end up with (+5).

I'm okay using Integer chips and a number line. So i'm going to explain my own way , how i can use both and anyone of those two help me .

Integer chips:

Question: (+6) - (-3) = ?
Firstly, repersent the first number (+6) ( NOT USING ZERO PAIRS) . Secondly, repersent the second (-3) number using zero pairs. Third, take away (-3) because that what the question say to.Fourthly, cancell out any positive and negative number that go together . If not then add it all up.Finally, add up all the leftovers then that's you anwser!

(+6) - (-3) = +9

Number line :
(+6) - (-3) =?
Firstly,Start at zero and go right to the number the question says(+6).Secondly, since the second number is a negative go to the left 3 times.Make sure when you draw the arrow it stop right at the number.Finally, circle the number the arrow stops at and there's your anwser.
(+6) - (-3) = +9

@ Elenoa - Great post! Think back to the rules you learned in class. What happens when you subtract a negative number when you're using a number line? I'll give you a hint, it is the opposite of what you would do if you subtracted a positive number.

I prefer number lines.

Because they are easier. Because there is easier steps that chips. Also I think it is easier because you have to label so you don't get lost.

I think number lines are easier because there is easy steps like this.
Firstly label so you don't get lost.
Secondly there is not so many steps like chips.
Thirdly you draw arrows to see where you are going. Finally it's easier because they don't make a mess ate your desk.

I like both number lines and integer chips but I prefer integer chips because I think it's more stragetic and simple.

[INTEGER CHIPS]
LET'S TAKE A SIMPLE QUESTION: (+5) - (-6)

First thing your going to want to do is model the first number (no zero pairs) +5 and

then your going to model the second number with zero pairs (reg -6) (zéro pairs +6)

and then you take away the regular number that was there before the zero pairs (take away -6)

Then your going to want to cancel out or you add them up because in this case we have two positive so you just add them up which changes the equationto this

(+5) - (+6) = +11

If you don't know how to use integer chips for subtraction, allow me to explain. Say you are doing the question (+3) - (+ 5). Firstly you're gonna want to draw the first number with circles. Known as (Integer Chips) (+)(+)(+). After that you draw the second number but with the zero pairs principle. The zero pairs principle is used only for the second number of a subtraction question. ATM. secondly draw the second number (-)(-)(-)(-)(-) After that. you wanna activate zero principal. Draw the OPPOSITE integer sign. (+)(+)(+)(+)(+). Once you have done that just throw away the other ones. Next up is just simple addition. What happened to the - sign? just be like add a line, change the sign.

Answer: -2

If you don't already know how to use number lines when it comes to subtraction, I will carefully explain to you. Say you're doing the question (+6) - (+8). This will be you'r number line. First look at the first number witch is (+6) label it one you're number line. Stop at EXACTALY 6 or else you get an F-.

After that you follow the rules Mr. Redecon teacher us. Add a line, to change the sign. That only happens to the secon number of subtraction. Change that subtraction sign into an addition sign and turn the on the numbers integer into an opposite integer. So now it's now (-8) label iron the numbe line.

I like to use integer chips . Eg.
(-4)-(6)=

Step1)First, you model the first number without zero pairs.-4-4-4-4
Step2)Next, you model second number using zero pair.666666 -6 -6 -6 -6 -6 -6
Step3) Then subtract the chips that was displaying the second number.
Step4) After that, you cancel out positive and negative numbers using 1:1 ratio. If you can.
Step5) Finally, you additional up.

(-4)-(6)=(-10)

I would use the chips
They're easier to use then the number line and more fun to use also
Because with the chips its the same thing you do and with the number line its like If you subtract you do this and if you add you do this.

I would use the chips because theyre easier to use then the number line. I will now do a example on why this is better then the number line.
(-6)-(-2)
So this is easy
Step one: you make the first number using the chips so since its -6 we do red 6 and not zero pairs.
Step two:do the second number IN zero pairs.
Step 3: remove the second numbers so remove negative 2.
Since we have both red and yellow chips we pair them off and remove them which leaves us with an answer of negative four.
This is easier then the number line and more fun.

I would use integer chips because it is easier to do and understand for me.
Example:(-5)-(-4)=??
Step 1:Model the first number(WITHOUT ZERO PAIRS).
Step 2:Model the second number(WITH ZERO PAIRS).
Step 3:Take out the second number(NOT THE ZERO PAIRS).
Step 4:Cancel out the the negative number with the zero pairs(+4)
Step 5:Remainders are your answer.
(-5)-(+4)=-1

1) model the fist number with (no zero principle)
2)model the second number with (zero principle)
3) then subtract the second pair of the second number.
4) then just cancel it out.

I like to use integer chips, because it is funner in my opinion.
+1- -4
Step1) you first model the first number no zero pairs so you have +1
Step2) Second you model the second number with zero pairs so you -4 and +4
Step3) Then you subtract for us we take away the -4 so we have +4
Step4) Last but not least you cancel out, but for us we don't have to cancel out because we have two positive numbers. Then you have your answer +5.

2:Modal the second number this time and use zero pairs
3:Subtract the second number and leave the zero pair number
4:See if you can take away any number

I like the integer chips

Subtracting positive and negative integers
1. Look at your question for example (-5)-(-3)
You take the 5 and make 5 little circles ------> 00000 NO ZERO PRINCIPLE
2. Then get the 3 and do the same ------> 000-3 With zero principle
000+3
3.then get rid of -3 they smell bad
4. then take out -3 from -5 and that is the question done. witch is -2

For my opinion is pretty would use the integer chips because it's easier to understand and more fun than the number line

You have a question like (-7)-(-3),but you don't now hot to do it and it's the last question you have.Well don't I'll help you out.

Firstly, you have to modelete the first question with out using zero pairs.(-) (-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)

Secondly, you will have to model the second number using zero pairs.(-)(-)(-) (+)(+)(+)

Thirdly, you have to remove negative 3 which will leave you with positive 3 (+)(+)(+)

Lastly, you have to cancel out the remaining numbers to get ur final answer

Cross out 3 negatives and 3 positives because you have to cancel them out

The answer is -4.Now you have the answer go give it to the teacher,the results will be you got a +A.Yay

Strategies I learned:

Integer strategies I use:
Number lines.
How to use number lines:
Firstly, you look at the question if the first number is positive or negative. (Ex. (-2)+(+6) ) Secondly, you start by zero and go to the left which is the negative side. Make sure you stop at the number of what the question told you. I stop at -2 since it's my question.
Thirdly, you label it and start at the number where you labeled. I start at -2 since it's what I labeled.
Fourthly, start counting whatever number your question said so. I go to the right 8 times since it's what my question told me. And then label. BOOM! You get your answer. My answer is +6.

You model the first number (No zero pars)

than subtract the yellow

So that's why I think it simple because there's 4 short steps.

I am comfortable using integer chips and number line.
Eg: (-5) - (-7)

You start with the first number for me that is -5 if it is a negative number you go left if it is a positive number you go right.

I move left by (-5). But if there is two negative you go right.

I move right by (-7) it mite be comfusing but if there is two negative you move the second number right.

The answer will be (+2).
Sorry if it is comfusing and sorry if my writing is wrong.

How to use an integer number line.

Let's start off with a question.
(-8) - (-9) =

Now get your number line

Start from zero and move to the left. (If the first number is a positive then you move to the right.) Now your at -8

After that look at the 2nd number and the question.
- (-9) = start from negative 8 and move to the right 9 spaces.
Where did you land? If +1 You did it correctly.

I think integer chips are easier becaus they give you a understanding and they help you count with out using your fingers you can have your hand free for one thing and the other for another but that doesn't mean I can't have a diffrent opinion for number lines they are very helpful to but confusing but I still use them some times but they can more helpful to other people but I think integer chips work best for me

I'm fine with number lines and integer chips since, I know both of their strategies. But, I prefer integer chips.

Example: (-5) - (+7) = ?

First, you have to model the first number without zero pairs.
Secondly, model the second number with zero pairs.
Thirdly, subtract the integer chips according to the second number.
Fourthly, cancel out the integer chips. But, in this situation, you don't have to since all that's left are negative integers.
Finally, count all the chips and BAM! that's the answer ^-^.

What I strategy I prefer is the number line
Example: (-2) + (-4)
(First): you count to (-2)
(Second): you label
(Third): you go to (-4)
(Fourth): you label
(Fifth): you circle the answer (-6)
