Today, students worked on assessment for learning. Students received their math evaluations from yesterday, uploaded them to FreshGrade, and completed their learning reflections. Parents, please take the time to browse your child's digital portfolio regularly to see the learning that has been taking place. Feel free to offer them words of encouragement and descriptive feedback when possible. Parents, click here for some example sentence starter that may help you out! If anything, it will give you a discussion topic at the dinner table! For learning to thrive, parents, students, and teachers must be involved in the process!

Today, we finished reading 'ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S'. It was an incredibly powerful book that many of us were able to connect to.
With our Novel Approach strategies, we have been learning how to improve our comprehension by strategically using these strategies. We have covered #1-5 from this list of reading strategies.
In paragraph format, do the following:
LEARNING INTENTION: I can use my reading strategies strategically to find the big idea of ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Clearly state the big idea.
2.) Back up your big idea with 2 examples from the story/book.
- Provide at least 2 specific reading strategies you used and explain how they helped you
deepen your understanding of the BIG IDEA.

'One For The Murphy's', a book about a young girl who gets sent away to a foster home. She lives as though it's a chamber, each day she'd count the days until she could get out. But now, she stops counting and begins hoping that she could stay, because this was where she first felt the true love of a family. The Murphy's took great care of her until the last day, Carley Connors had to return to Vegas with her mother. She didn't want to leave, but she knew she had to go. For her beloved mother, and so that she could learn more about the true world. She had vowed to Mrs. Murphy that she would make it to college and become someone's hero, though she was already a hero to the Murphy's. I believe that this story was written with this in mind, to never treat others differently, and be open to a new world. Always try new things, allow your decisions to guide you. When you regret, let it come from the heart and not the mind, because only in this way you will see an outcome that you can't look back on but only move forward. When things go wrong, it's not the end, there's only more to come forth. With life as the subject, I realize that the author is attempting to show that you can be a hero too. It could be for a small matter but every little thing counts. Furthermore, to understand the context and message the author is trying to send through their writing, I made inferences and estimated the next step of the plot. I also made connections with the characters of the story using my background knowledge, about how they lived their lives, how they felt and their family relations. These two strategies helped me recognize and realize the concept of the book, it shared with me the purpose of the book. What reading strategies did you use and how did they help you?

One for the Murphys is a book with a very deep story, and many connections to be made. There are many aspects to the story, so it is hard to find the main idea. I think one of the big themes is family. I think the book is saying that family isn't just who you're born to. It's whoever you feel closest to, and safest with. Another theme is kindness and compassion. One of the ways this is shown is with Daniel. When Carley first comes to the Murphys' house, she hates Daniel as he is not very nice to her no matter if she is nice to him. But eventually she breaks through and makes friends with him, and builds a sibling-like relation with him. Another example of this is with Mr. Murphy. With Mrs. Murphy, Carley and her got along pretty quickly. But with Mr. Murphy, it takes longer. To start, he's a fan of a different baseball team. This is a pretty easy fact to get over, but there are other things. For a while, he obviously does not like Carley. He tries to be subtle about it, but it's there. It's not that he thinks Carley is bad, it's just that he thinks they don't need another kid in the house, and he doesn't like that Mrs. Murphy is getting upset over her. Eventually, though, he sees that Carley is not so bad and that Mrs. Murphy really loves her and wants to keep her at their house. He also understands that it's not specifically Carley: Though Mrs. Murphy does love Carley, she also just wants to 'be someone's hero', as she might say. Overall, I think the Big Idea of the story is that family can be anyone, and that even though some people might be hesitant to let you into their family, if you prove yourself to be kind and trustworthy you can get them to eventually be comfortable with you.

The Murphy’s is a family Carley lived with for awhile and after finally experiencing what many children get to experience everyday, it really told Carley what she was missing out on. She has a very deep connection with the Murphy’s, and especially Mrs. Murphy. Carley finds out that Mrs. Murphy was also a foster child, which made them even closer. She’s shown Carley what she’s capable of, and has lead her in the right direction. Carley didn’t really enjoy being with the Murphy’s at the beginning, but finds her love for them at the end! The big idea in this book to me is to “Be someone’s hero” which was repeated multiple times in the story. The phrase is to tell people to help and support others that need it, and the book demonstrates the message really well. Undoubtedly, Mrs. Murphy was Carley’s hero, and Carley was a hero to Daniel, Adam and Michael-Eric. I couldn’t imagine how hard it must have been for Carley to say goodbye, and the way the author wrote the context helped me feel a deep connection too. To me, the book demonstrates love, trust, betrayal, kindness and bravery!

In One For the Murphy’s, it takes time for someone to trust another person. For example, Daniel did not like it that Carley was staying with them. Carley decided to teach some basketball to Daniel. After a few lessons, he became nicer and he trusted Carley more. In Daniel’s basketball game, he was being cheered on by Carley. After he scored a few goals, he felt a lot better that Carley was living with them. Another example is when Mrs. Murphy told Carley that she was a foster kid. This made Carley trust her even more. Mrs. Murphy also explained her favorite book to Carley. She explained that it was about the tree’s love for the little boy. The tree kept giving things to the boy and asked for nothing in return. Throughout the book, Mrs. Murphy showed what a normal family is like. She bought Carley new clothing, listened to her, and cared for her. This made Carley overwhelmed by all the good things she got and treated the Murphy’s like family. Overall, I think that the main idea for the book has something to do with trust.

The reading strategies I used was making inferences and finding out what’s important. The thing that I found that was important was the amount of time Carley spent with the Murphy’s. So at least she could still call her mom. I wish that Ms Connors and Carley could move in with the Murphys at the end so they could all be together but at least she knew the Murphys loved her.

After reading "One For The Murphy's" What might the big idea be? I say might because we are never to sure, the big idea to someone may be "To trust others" and the big idea to someone else can be "To accept others" but to me i think the big idea is "To give others a chance and accept them" So this might not be the big idea to YOU but it is to ME and thats all that mattrers, to be ok with what you are so yeah. Thats the big idea to me!

One For The Murphy's is a interesting book, why? Because this book teaches you about corage, about the love the mother have for someone that might not be her daughter, that is what This author has taught us. How did i come up with this big idea? Well i used two things which are called "reading strategies" Reading strategies are things that help pyou understand the big idea of a story or anything,really. The reading stradegies i used are, stop and think and re-read this two strategies are my main monitor comprhension strategies. How did i come up with this? Well in the whole story Ms.Murphy is always telling Carley how she deserves more how she. deserves everything she has to give her and how she loves Carley just like her own son's this book is a very powerful book, like i said it teaches us the courage to love others and accept others,

Lastly This book isnt the only book about things like this, you should also check out fish in a tree which we started reading. I tihkn it would be awesome and One For The murphy's is really reccomanded

Of the strategies, I used making inferences and visualization the most. Making inferences helped me understand the story better because when you make inferences, you understand the things that the book says better. I made the inference that Carley doesn't like Dennis. This helps explain why she made him so mad that he hurt her. When I visualize, it helps me see the setting. It helps me understand where they are, and if that place is depressing, than the characters are probably going to be sad.

So that's my take on One for the Murphy's.

Making inferences helped me understand the story better because when you make inferences, you understand the things that the book says better. I made the inference that Carley doesn't like Dennis. This helps explain why she made him so mad that he hurt her. When I visualize, it helps me see the setting. It helps me understand where they are, and if that place is depressing, then the characters are probably going to be depressed.

In conclusion, One for the Murphy's is a story about how Carley Connors learned to trust and forgive others.

In my opinion, I think the Big Idea of this book is about family, about how we all take it for granted that we have a good family. Some people have broken families, others with abusive ones, and a lot don't have a family at all. The book explains Carley's abusive step dad severely injuring Carley and almost killing her mother. Anyone should know that's illegal and her step dad was sent to jail. Carley was sent to a foster care where she was fostered by the Murphy's. I think this is a great family because they show her what a true family looks like, how her mother should've been. This is a big factor in my opinion of the Big Idea because she knows what a real family is like. The other reason why I think family is the Big Idea of this book is at the end of the book, Carley chooses to go back to her mother instead of staying with the Murphy's. Do you ever think about the big idea of a book while reading it? All books have a big idea, and I believe that the big idea of "One For The Murphys is how we must be ourselves and be open-minded to ultimately live a good life. When arriving at the Murphy house, Carley was belligerent towards the family. She didn't think, nor did she trust in Mrs. Murphy. However, as she experiences what it felt like to be loved, she stopped acting hostile and was extremely hesitant to leave them even after knowing her mother's true intention. Though Carley did acknowledge what the Murphys had done for her, she couldn't have done so sooner because of her constantly trying to conceal who she really is. For example, she was being dishonest to everybody. She kept lying to herself and everyone around her about multiple things which lead to a massive lie that couldn't have been undone. Even Toni, her best friend, was furious. Not because of the truth itself, but because of her lies. I believe that being honest and being yourself is critical to recognize what people are doing for you.
Two reading strategies that I used while reading this book are visualization and making inferences / predictions. Visualizing the Murphy house and character interactions allowed me to understand and connect with the characters more. Predicting what will happen by making inferences made me think more about the plot. I believe that it was exceptionally important in this book since there includes serious examples of foreshadowing and certain events that demands doing so to understand.
In summary, the big idea of "One For The Murphys" is that we must learn to be open-minded and honest to be successful.

Reading a book can be really easy, just reads the words out. But finding what the message behind the book, having to know what the meaning is can be hard to find. For example, after reading this wonderful book called One For The Murphy's, I made lots of connections and the big idea! I think the big idea of this book is just be yourself! While reading, Carley always say that when you cry it means your weak. But in my opinion, I think after crying about something makes me feel so much better! As you might know, Carley is a foster child. That means that Mrs. Murphy isn't her real mother. I think that she kept it to herself in front of the other kids in her school because she thinks that it makes her different from others. She was so scared to tell the truth that she lied to her best friend, which is Tony! When she heard that Carley was lying to her, she was furious!

The 2 strategies I used to understand this book more is visualizing while reading! I think this strategies is really awesome because you can imagine how it looks like in your head! My second strategies I used is making connections. This helped me because when we read a book and we make connections. We tend to remember the book really well! Something I could work on is using more descriptive words and writing a more engaging hook!

ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S in my opinon chef's kiss amazing book. The book is about a girl who dident have the best home life but than one night it all went south.... she woke up in the hospital than a social worker took her to a foster home, the Murphys house. what i think the big idea is, that even though you might not have the bast home life yo can still achive happyness form someone that cares deply for you and you can be happy no matter your past. two reading stratigeys i used where 1 visualizing. visualizing helped me see what was happening through my imaganation and the words from the book. 2 making background connections, this helped me because i made multiple connections through out the book and that heppled me under stand the characters more and understand why they acted like they did. over all this book was butifully written and enjoyable to read as a class.

ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S in my opinion chefs kiss a truly amazing book. The book is about a girl named Carley who did not have best home life than one night it all went south.... she woke up in the hospital where a social worker came to take her to a foster home, the Murphy's house. What I think the big idea is, is that no matter your past or your personal life you can still achieve happiness from the ones who deeply care about you. Two reading strategies that helped me where 1 visualizing and 2 making background connections. 1 Visualizing, this strategy helped me see what was happening through my imagination and the words from the book. 2 Background connections, this helped me because I made multiple connections through out the book and helped me understand the character more and understand why they acted like they did. In this book, the Big Idea is that you might not have a good relationship at first, but the relationship will get better, and better until you have a relationship that's unbreakable. This happened with Carley and Toni. First, Carley and Toni didn't like each other but they were assigned to work with each other on a project. During the project, their relationship got better and better. This also happened to Carley and Mrs. Murphy. Carley didn't like Mrs. Murphy at first. But their relationship got better and better. The reading stratagies I used are visulization and Monitoring Comprehension. I used visulization to understand how the characters looked and moved. One For The Murphy’s is an interesting book that shows the life of Carley at her new foster home after an incident with her mother and her mothers boyfriend. At first she doesn’t like it at her new home but she starts to warm up to the people around her and makes friends. As her mother gets better, Carley realizes that she likes her new life more than her old one. At the end of the book, although she doesn’t want to, leaves to live with her mom again. The message of the book is about giving and caring without anything expected in return and being nice to someone even if they don’t see the point in it. They also talk about the giving tree and it is an excellent example of the message. Love.
