Learning about the Muslim faith w/ Mrs. Jivraj

Today, students had their first 'NOVEL APPROACH' book club (Novel 1). They engaged in rich conversations with Mr. Collins and Mrs. Chohan. Later, they worked on their sports day cheers and learned more about patterns in algebra. They were lucky to have another guest speaker, Mrs. Jivraj, speak to them about Islam. She shared her knowledge and her presentation was followed by a Q & A session. Asking good thinking questions is a key component of the learning process.

It is important to be safe when doing chemistry. When working with chemicals he should have on the necessary equipment. Goggles to protect your eyes, gloves to protect your, hands,closed-toe shoes protect your feet and good fitting clothing. Remember to always add acid to water never water to acid if you add water to acid to acid will start to boil and it could get in your eyes on your skin.

Safety first! This is the most important rule in any chemistry laboratory no matter where you are in the universe.

Safety is extremely important, as when you fail to comply with safety regulations you are risking major/severe injury to yourself and others, or in the worst case scenario, death. So, if you value your life, you should learn how to be safe!

First, you need to wear proper attire when conducting experiments in the laboratory. Wear closed toed shoes and long pants or skirts to protect against chemical spills or fragments of hazardous glass. Wear eye goggles and gloves when handling volatile elements so as to not damage your eyes and prevent acid from dissolving your skin.

Secondly, you should never eat, drink, touch or smell directly any substance, especially one that you do not know the name of. Do not drink Hydrogen Peroxide, put your hand in Liquid Nitrogen or touch Dry Ice. Waft the scent of chemical compounds towards you to not damage your nostrils. Also, do not eat or drink in the lab for the fear of adding toxic substances to your food. If you do accidentally contaminate your food, get medical attention immediately. Don't wait until it's too late!

Finally, you must always remember to self-regulate noise-levels, actions and behaviour for your safety and others.

In conclusion, science and chemistry are extremely fun, but only when you are being safe!

Today afternoon, we had a science lesson passed on how to protect ourselves when we are doing the chemistry. We had watched a video, and it taught us some safety precautions when doing chemistry experiments.

In today's video, it gaves us correct way of protecting ourselves, and also the incorrect way to protect ourselves. There are some example that I think is very important. Moreover, we all have to know it, so we can will not hurt ouselves during the chemistry project.

First of all, we should never wear things that can distract our attention on the chemical that we are doing. The clothes should not be sweater or something that is like a really short skirts, etc. If you wear all these stuff, then you will accidentally burn yourselves or you will pour some chemical on to the ground. For example, when you are in a chemistry lesson, you wear a skirt and a T-short, because you feel very hot. Unfortunutely , your teacher didn't discover it, and you didn't even realize that you id something wrong because your teacher didn't say so. However, after you accidentally burn your your hands by your friend, you realize that you shouldn't wear all these clothes, but it is too late. consequently, we have to wear the right clothes.

The second things you hace to be careful is, eating, drinking, doing make up in the chemistry room is not allow, because your make up things has chemical in it too, also, if you drop some food in your chemistry container, the chemical can turn out in an another........ things, it can be very dangerous. So, never eat or doing make up in the sciece room.

In conclusion, there is still a lot of safety things we have to follow during the chemistry class, for example, we have to floow the instruction, listen to the teacher, no fooling around........... We have to take the safety things seriously. Otherwise, we might get hurt easily. :)

If you don’t take safety precautions, you won’t be alive. This is my main idea of following the safety rules and take safety precautions.

Through the video we watched in today’s science lesson, we got a lot of ideas about being safe and the reason for that. Hence, we complete the worksheet of safety precautions. We learned a bunch of knowledge today and we must remember them to avoid when accidents or emergency happens.

In the video, it told us what to do if we got a cut by broken glass, or whatever which linked by chemical stuff. The first thing to do is to go to a sink or a tub and make sure those are water, which won’t have any chemical effect of reactions, explosions of it. Then, immediately wash the cut and make sure there’s no glass is getting stuck in your skin. For safety, tell the teacher and tell them what chemical glass container or what hurt, which the teacher could tell you what to do either use a bandage or go to the hospital.

The second example will be not fooling around, that is the most important part of being safe. Imagine if you are fooling around when a kid is walking with a really dangerous chemical liquid or stuff. And by the time you crash at that student, imagine what’s going to happen. First, the liquid poured to your face, your skin, or even your eyes, and you don't know what should you do for it. Second, the liquid inside the container might have chemical reactions with your skin and might burn your skin or make your skin from getting hurt which you don’t know. If that does, you might be injured or even not being alive.

That’s the reason why I said you will not being staying alive if you don’t safety percautions.

Having safety goggles or gloves when you do science experiments are good for not getting something in your eye or for not getting burnt. Today I watched the ways of safety so you could be careful and not be touched by chemicals. Wearing goggles keep you safe from tiny explosives, and chemicals that can hurt you eyes. In the past when I was in grade 4 or 5, we did an experiment for us trying to combine chemicals to form a liquid, into a solid, and into a gas.

This afternoon, at science the grade 6 were talking about aboriginal perspective of constellations.

I learned in science that everyone has different perspective of constellations because everyone is taught differently. I learned that there is lots of constellations with different meanings. Space is a an extremely dangerous and mysterious universe because we don’t know what is upon the planets and stars we know.

In conclusion, learning about space is interesting and I am excited to learn about constellations.

During the chemistry lesson today, we were told to watch this safety precautions video when doing chemistry experiments. I learned that it is extremely important to follow these safety rules while doing chemistry. Therefore, we won’t have any dangers or injuries happening while having fun discovering chemistry!

A few of the safety rules that I would like to mention are, dressing properly for chemistry classes and have common sense. First of all, let’s start having to dress properly. In chemistry lessons, we should always dressed up with clothes that are going to protect you if, by any means, accidents happen. What I mean by that is we should avoid any long sleeves or fuzzy materials since that might stand in your way. Furthermore, it might cause accidents to happen during the experience. What we should be wearing are comfortable clothes and pants that are could cover our entire arm and legs, it should be fairly loose that allows us to have movements during the process. In addition, we should avoid direct touching any kinds with liquids. We have to wear gloves and glasses on to keep away from injuring them.

Another significant rules to master are to have common sense while doing chemistry. In general, we all have gained some background knowledge of what common sense is. For example, we’re never allowed to combine any liquid without teacher’s instructions since accidents might happen. On top of that, we shouldn’t be fooling around or taking this not serious, since it is due to our safety.

In conclusion, I’ve learned lots of safety precautions after watching that video. I realized that we should be extra careful while doing chemistry experiments, safety always comes first.

Chemistry is a very unique and fun subject, you spend time working with, and learning about different chemicals. However, as we know everything has a risk and chemicals are full of them. One must be incredibly cautious in a lab when working with chemicals, dismissive behavior can lead to fatal injuries, or a painful or poisonous death. Different safety precautions exist to help diminish the risks of contamination, but it is of utmost importance that you are aware of the chemicals you are using, the glassware, the surrounding area, and any spills or leaks. Today, we were shown a long video that tells us about the precautions we must take before using any chemicals, or devices. Life is a gift and you cannot get another one, so safety is a top priority.

Chemicals can be incredibly dangerous, in different circumstances they can contaminated someones body, they can explode, and they can have an unsafe reaction. Different tools exist to decrease the risk, but there is always a chance some acid can spray into your eyes. Wearing the right clothing and equipment is crucial, and one should not be allowed near chemicals without the right accessories.

In the video, I was most interested in the burner, as it seemed to be the most dangerous piece of equipment there. The biggest thing to be worried about in labs are the released gasses, as certain chemicals can be flammable, or combustible, meaning that there is a noticeable risk when using this type of equipment. It has a chance of setting certain clothing on fire, which is considerably dangerous, this can lead to fatal burns. Always check to see if everything is in good condition, misbehavior could lead to very bad outcomes.

When working in a lab as a minor, always have an adult near you. If someone is burnt or seriously injured, the teacher can help the student and also call an ambulance if required. Any spills or uncontrollable leaks must be handled by an adult, in safety of the minors. Even if children should be responsible for their own choices, it is in the adults responsibility to assure the clearance of all children.

In conclusion, working with chemicals can be extremely dangerous. There are hundreds of rules that one must pay attention to. These rules are directed to minors, for their enjoyment and safety. I am very excited to come back to school and actually work with chemicals for the first time.

The turtle? This afternoon, we had a lesson on constellations and how the indigenous see them. At first, I didn't really see how the stars were turned into these shapes and forms. The closer I looked at them, the more they looked like random stars. You have to have quite an imagination to see the formations. We were assigned short stories to learn and study. Mine was about the lunar year that is represented by a turtle. This is because the lunar year consists of 13 full moons, each 28 days apart. Coincidently, if you look at the turtles back, you see 28 plates, representing the 28 days between the full moons. If you count the inner plates, you see 13, representing the 13 full moons. I also learned a new way to remember all the planets, My Very Enthusiastic Mother Just Served Us Noodles. In conclusion, I learned lots about how different cultures are influenced by the cosmos.

In science, we are learning about all the different extreme environments, but at the moment we are focusing on outer space.
I learned that there are eight planets with all different numbers of moons.
Mercury 0 moons
Venus 0 moons
Earth 1 moon
Mars 2 moons
Jupiter 79 moons
Saturn 62 moons
Uranus 27 moons
Neptune 14 moons
I also learned that there are many constellations with meaning and stories behind them.

"OH NO I GOT ACID IN MY EYES! I'M GOING TO DIE!" Well, now we know what to do to help get rid of that acid. Today we learned more about our science unit, which is now revolving around chemistry. Even though not a lot of things about an actual chemistry unit were learned, we now know a lot about safety and what to do while in a lab. Including getting acid out of your eyes.

An example of not following safety guidelines includes wearing no lab coat, shorts, and open toed shoes in a lab. This creates more of a chance that u get burned, splashed or wounded by chemicals that are mixed. However, if you wear non-loose clothes, long pants and close toed shoes, you won't get hurt all that much. Some materials, such as polyester or cotton are also harmful because polyester burns easily and cotton traps things and holds them against your skin. As you can see, even small details like the clothes that you are wearing, are crucial to making sure science doesn't turn into an "everybody is on fire" class.

Secondly, an incorrect way of operating in a lab is cleaning up any spills or messes by yourself as a student. However, by doing this you can hurt yourself or wound yourself as cleaning up needs precision and knowledge. The correct thing to do would, obviously, be to tell a teacher about the mess immediately. If you don't tell a teacher first, and try to clean it up yourself, it is possible to make the mess even worse than it currently is.

Another important thing to safety is putting waste in the right places. For example, sometimes there are special garbage cans in the classroom to put harmful substances in. Why would you put things like acid in a garbage can anyways? It will just hurt the Earth even more. Of course, everything depends on what type of waste bins you have and which chemicals you are using.

In conclusion, being safe in a lab (or anywhere where you can be hurt) is important so you can avoid the pain and the misery. By following rules, you can be secure and guarded from any accidents.

Things I learn today about being safe when doing chemicals. Wear closed shoes. Open shoes, such as sandals, are a no-go as a falling item could injure your foot or a potential acid spill could damage your skin. Long pants are a must as skirts and shorts expose the skin to dangerous chemicals. Avoid loose sleeves, as they are impractical when working. Tie back long hair. Loose hair could catch fire when working with a Bunsen burner.If you accidentally spill a chemical, try to remain calm and figure out what it is. You should immediately warn everyone that something has been spilled.Never touch, smell or in any other way interact with the chemical before you know what you are dealing with. One thing I think is strange is the safety shower: It Use to wash yourself in case you come into contact with dangerous chemicals. If your clothes catch fire, the safety shower should also be used. Just to add why I feel strange when a large amount of chemicals you need to go and use the safety shower and talk off all your cloth in case it got stuck on your skin.

Chemistry is one important, yet fun thing to learn about. It is necessary to learn about chemistry because it helps us understand the world better. It’s in the water we drink, clothes we wear, foods we eat, medicine we take, and even the air we breathe. It explains the changes around us, like why leaves change colour? Even more, chemistry is a such a fun and interesting subject to be learning about. Though, without knowing the safety precautions, doing an experiment can really turn upside down and make it a nightmare. Here are a few important rules to follow to make sure you learn in a safe environment.

First, dress accordingly and make sure you’re prepared and protected. Wear long-sleeved clothing that is tight enough that your sleeves aren’t waving around and loose enough that you can move freely. Wear closed, leather shoes and long pants or skirts that have sturdy fabric. Wear a lab coat if provided. Tie your hair if you have long hair, and take off your contact lenses, watches, and rings. Most importantly, wear proper gloves and goggles with side shields to protect one of the most important parts of your body.

Second, be prepared for an emergency. If there is an emergency, know where your fire extinguishers are and your fire exits. If an accident happens that you can’t fix easily, ask a teacher or adult for help. Never try to do something that you are unsure of alone. Report any injuries or accidents to the teacher, even if it is just a small one.

Lastly, clean up your workspace thoroughly, especially if others are sharing it with you. Wash and rinse equipment, wipe and clean the tables, and throw waste accordingly. There are specialized bins and containers for certain things, so don’t just throw them in the garbage bin. Also, wash your own hands too. This is especially important to prevent any remaining chemicals on your workspace mixing with the next test’s chemicals. We don’t want others to get hurt either.

To summarize, you need to dress properly, be ready in case of an emergency, and always make sure your workspace is cleaned. We need to know all these things because while having lots of fun, we need to make sure that we are learning in a safe manner.

Today, we had a whole period of science for both grade 6s in Mr. Hong’s and our neighbouring class div.3. In the science unit both classes have started, we are studying Constellations, astronomy, extreme environments, and space.

Today, we focused on how religious people see the stars and what we now call “constellations” and what their perspective of it is. In a video we watched as a whole class, there was a man from the Cree, ( indigenous group of Manitoba, Canada. His name was Wilfred Buck, and he explained how his people see many of the constellations, and how each has a story behind it, and it has come to my mind that everyone thinks so differently, because I would never have seen something as creative as the First Nations.

And we also did a group K. W. L chart and that stands for Know, Wonder, Learn. And each group must have written something down on each paper page.

Today in the afternoon, grade 6s went to division 3 to talk more about the science unit we were learning. We are currently focusing on extreme environments>space>constellations right now.

Today we started science by doing a kwl thing, where we write down what we know, what we wonder and what we learned. Then we moved on to watching a video about constellations we see now being different to indigenous people, where they were taught the same constellations but the constellations being differently represented as a picture. We each read a few short stories about constellations to end the science period today, we learned many new things!

Safety is the most important part and it’s for you’re own safety and that can happen if you don’t listen carefully to your teacher and the most common one is accidents because for example some acid gets to you’re eyes and that’s the worst thing that can happen to you when doing chemistry or science. If that happens or acid spills all over you’re eyes or skin that can cause blindness and if it touches you’re hand wash it off immediately so it doesn’t take anymore damage. Without goggles you’re basically going to die because when you’re experimenting and with acid that can lead to a explosions and the worst thing about doing experimenting. The proper clothing is to have goggles and a lab coat to protect you’re skin and also gloves to protect your hands when putting a container somewhere or sometimes it makes bubbles and it can spill all over your fingers and that can also cause damage to your skin. The most important is safety because safety first and the second is have fun but I would rather not get hurt because that would be a bad thing to get hurt by and also just be careful on everything such as no fooling around and ETC.

Safety is one of the most important things you must follow, otherwise if you don’t then accidents can happen. Yesterday in class, we learned about the many safety concerns when using chemicals and liquids. Why should we be careful? Well we should always be careful. If you spill or get something in your eye, it can be really painful and bad. Safety is not a joke, because things can happen that you’d never expect to happen. You should always be careful in a lab. The number one rule in a lab is don’t fool around. Some people might think that it’s funny to make a joke, or do something funny, but in a lab you should be serious about what your doing. For example if you’re measuring something out and your friend moved your hand as a joke, if they move it too much you could possible spill all over yourself and even them. There is no time for joking!

From the thirty minute video we watched, I actually learned a lot. I also learned how to use the equipment properly and safely. I have many notes written down so I won’t forget any safety issues that happen.

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles is a way to remember the planets in order from closest to farthest from the sun. Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus and Neptune.

In science we are currently learning about the night sky. That includes planets and stars. Yesterday we learned about the native view on the stars and how they see the constellations. Some learning intentions for this unit could be: I can name the constellations of the night sky. I can tell the native story of my groups constellation. I can name the planets in the order of closest to farthest from the sun.

In science we are learning chemistry, but before that happens we need understand the safety precautions because if not being safe can lead to terrible things like death. so two things we must do when dealing with chemicals is to never sniff something directly, always waft the smell towards you. One other thing to remember is that we should always wear fitted clothing with natural fabrics to prevent disasters.
