COMPARING FRACTIONS

Today, students learned how to make equivalent fractions by using the LCM of the denominators. They also learned several different strategies they could use in order to compare fractions. We will continue looking at various other strategies tomorrow. Click here if you want a sneak peak at what is to come! Today, you worked collaboratively with your group to show your understanding in how to compare fractions from least to greatest using at least 3 different methods. Most of you used common denominators, number lines, diagrams, and some of you also tried using benchmarks. It was amazing to see the learning taking place when you work productively and collaboratively with your group members.

IMPORTANT:

There lived a baby dolphin with its mother in the HYDROLOGIC waters of Lakshadweep, named Will. Will was a very adventures calve, and enjoyed exploring his BIOME. His mother always reminded him, to never go down to the midnight zone, despite how many predators lurks down there. Will only travelled in the sunlight zone, since that’s the safest area for SPECIES like him. Wills curiosity did get him. He’d always wonder, what’s down there? And what’s so dangerous about it that he can’t go down? Several years pass by pretty quickly, and as Will ages, he eventually forgets about the thoughts of going down to the midnight zone, the PHYSIOGNOMY he lived in has changed lots, that if you compared what it look like before and now, you wouldn’t even recognize the surroundings! On Willys 10th birthday, his family hosted a massive party and invited INTERDEPENDENT to his party, since he was turning double digits. As Will thought about his birthday wish, he’d make sure that it would be BIG, nothing alike the other wishes that he had like a seaweed bracelet that he ate a long time ago. He thought about it all night..Then, something popped into his mind! He finally remembered about wanting to go to the midnight zone since he was little! He dashed through the water over to his mom which was all the way across the other conch house. As he shook his mom up jumping up and down in excitement, “mom, mom!! I want to go visit the midnight zone for my birthday”! As Wills mom slowly got up, her eyes grew wide. ARE YOU INSANE?! She said in a angered tone. “Do you realize how many predators are down there that would fight to consume you”?! As Wills body turns cold, consume? He says. Yes, they will consume you. Will gets some thoughts of what would happen down there. *gulp*. Wills mom calms down, “how about..you get something else for your birthday? Anything, we could even go to the sandcastle beach, but NOT going anywhere even near down there”! Will sighs. Fine..he stomps back to his conch. He couldn’t sleep all night from what his mom said. Consume? That word was stuck inside his head all night, he thought down there was going to be all friendly and filled with SPECIES of his own. (I’m not sure what else to write)

FEEDBACK: Check "On Willys 10th birthday, his family hosted a massive party and invited INTERDEPENDENT to his party, since he was turning double digits"; it does not make a lot of sense because interedepent is a noun and usually refers to helping each other rather than friends. Nice job!

I had to preserve the meat and find a tertiary consumers or else my boss will give me a lot of homework. Soon I had a interconnection with my tertiary consumer and found another tertiary consumer and they had a symbiosis connection. There is so much biodiversity in the world. In class the next day I had a lesson on hydrology and it was so fun. I went camping after that and my dad taught me about inter-dependent and give me example of to animals relying on each other. I had to stewardship my dog so I would get 5 dollars. That is my sentences.

@ Sam - I like seeing how motivated you are! Remember, always check the examples we created together in class to see if you are using the words correctly in your paragraph. Try to copy the pattern.

Can you clarify your first sentence? Why would your boss give you homework? Also, check your grammar - a tertiary consumers (if you use a, then consumers should be singular - consumer).

SECOND SENTENCE: When using 'symbiosis' as an adjective, remember we talked about using 'ic' at the end of it. So, call it a 'symbiotic connection'.

FIFTH/SIXTH SENTENCE:
Please rewrite it. Check your grammar for 'inter-dependent' and your use of 'stewardship'. Stewardship is a noun, not a verb. :)

Perhaps add another sentence, as the criteria states that you should have 8 sentences, and you only have 7.
Sentence 2: Maybe add "about" after "learnt" to make the sentence flow better.

The relationship between an anemone and a clownfish is a great example of a symbiotic relationship.

The biodiversity of this lake is quite high, with many species of fish living in it.

Scientists have estimated that there are approximately 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence.

An example of an interdependent relationship is how birds rely on trees to create nests for their eggs.

The physiognomy of the massive oak tree was a fascinating sight.

There are five major types of biomes: aquatic, grassland, forest, desert, and tundra.

An example of commensalism is a golden jackal following a tiger to feed on leftovers from its kills.

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide are all examples of air pollutants, all of them being quite dangerous to humans.

@Vernice - This was great! You used the words nicely, so it was interesting to read.

Feedback - In sentence 3, change your "which", to "in which". This would make more sense because you're focusing on the specific term, "photosynthesis".

Dogs have 152 more species than cats do.

The cleaner shrimp and the shark have good symbiosis where the shrimp gets a snack and the shark gets a cleanup.

Eagles are tertiary consumers because they eat secondary consumers like the worm eats the apple, the sparrow eats the worm, and then the eagle eats the sparrow.

Researchers study hydrology to see if anything is polluting the water.

Many people may not know it, but when the toss a beer can into the ocean the create a pollutant.

Plants go through photosynthesis a lot because the plant needs plant food to survive.

Snakes rely on the leaves and ground coloration to camouflage themselves from both predator and prey. This is a good example of an interdependent relationship.

A good example of commensalism is when tree frogs use leafs as protection from predators.

Sentence 1: I think you are talking about breeds, since all domestic dogs are part of the same species, and there is a difference between breeds and dogs, so maybe change that sentence.
Sentence 8: It's not LEAFS, it's LEAVES.

Cruising along the streets of the biosphere of land (or lithosphere) every day, John was determined to preserve all the species in the Mediterranean biome; never did he realize how his faithful stewardship would take down the sustainability of the chain of the ecosystem. With his ignorance, John embarked on an entertaining adventure - it all started when he brought a bag of ants back home.

On a balmy day in August, the sun was smiling upon everyone in the streets. As John opened up the door to the streets outside of his house in order to add more organisms to his “biodiversity collection”, as he phrased it, he saw a line of ants walking across his porch. Oh, I MUST bring them back to my home; they might be stepped on, die from the pollutants in the world, or even starve if I do not offer shelter for them, John thought carefully. Not knowing that ants, along with other species, fostered relationships of interconnectedness between a diversity of animals, John never knew that the ants rely on photosynthesis from plants for sustenance. Hence, John ridiculously took a plastic bag and poured all the desperate ants into the airless receptacle. In an instant, the man scurried back into the house, but when he unzipped the container, the infuriated species started biting him! Befuddled by their actions, John bewailed, “Stop the biting! I am helping you find adequate shelter!” Of course, the ants do not comprehend the human tongue and took it as a threat. Gnawing him with all their might, John had no solution but to sadly release them into Mother Nature.

Up to this day, John still does not acquire the knowledge of the interactions in the environment, and he continues to endure hilarious struggles with the diversity of organisms in the world.

3) The 2nd sentence in your 2nd paragraph, you wrote "as" two times.
3) The sentence where you stated the thought of John, I'd recommend adding quotation marks.
4) "Ants, ..., foster relationships...of animals. However, John never knew that the ants rely on photosynthesis from plants for sustenance." (You put "Not knowing" and "never knew" in the same sentence.)

FEEDBACK: For "Clownfish and sea anemone, oxpeckers and rhinos, and fruit bats and fruit are all examples of symbiosis", I would suggest switching the bat example with something else because it does not exactly an example of symbiosis because it is technically just food. For example, a person and a bag of chips do not share a symbiotic relationship. Overall, Great job!

THE CONTINUING JOURNEYS OF ANTONIO THE ANT

Antonio the ant had just been set free from the lab where he and his family had been taken hostage. He was shocked by how the scientists had found out how interconnected his DNA and that tarantula's really was. He hadn't even known himself. Now that he thought about it, he wondered if it was a good thing. Was it a good thing that his DNA had changed from that tarantula bite? Antonio's mind turned to the fact that he had always felt so different from the rest of his colony, let alone his entire species. Maybe his DNA was already different from the beginning, but he had just never realized it.
Antonio's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his father's voice. "Antonio!" the general boomed. "Come on down!"
Antonio stumbled on his own legs, startled. "I'm coming!" he called back once he came to his senses.
He rushed down a few tunnels until he reached his father's room. "What is it?"
Anton chuckled. "I have a surprise for you." He turned around and revealed a potted clover. "I thought you would need something to keep you busy this winter break."
He was right. Antonio hated being indoors; It made him feel so claustrophobic. "Thanks, Dad." He carefully reached for the clover.
"It's a big responsibility, taking care of a plant. You've gotta have some good stewardship."
Antonio was excited. He'd never been given a job like this before. Then, Antonio realized something. "But, Dad... How am I gonna preserve it? Doesn't it need photosynthesis to live? There's no sunlight in here."
Anton smiled. "Don't tell anyone, but..."
