Today was yet another excellent day of learning! Students had their minds blown when they saw how amazing and useful it is to use fraction strips to compare fractions with benchmarks. They used the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 marks to compare different fractions. Using the paper fraction strips and the digital ones helped the entire class visualize fraction and their proportions. #FractionsStripsAreLit

This quick paragraph is poing to tell you how to use fraction strips.
In the first case, we are going to find out a way using only two fractions to make one, the fractions have to be different. At first, we take a 1 bar, and put it down. then we put, for this case, half down below the one. That's one fraction. Then there is half more till one. then we could put 2 quaters. Then it will equal one. (1/2 +2/4 = 1)
For the second example, we are going to add the fractions 1/4 and 1/3. We put the bars a third and a quater down, then we find the least common multiple for the denominators, 3 and 4, which is 12. At last we put as much 12 bars until it is the same length as the four and the three. How many 12's there are is the numerator, which in this case, is 7, and 12 is the denominator.

A fraction is when a numinator is greater than a denominator. It’s for example like it needs to get to the same size for example there is a big chocolate bar that is 10 inches and then there is a 1 inch chocolate bar then you need to get 10 chocolate little bars because 1 bar covers 1 inch then you just keep going till you get 10 little chocolate bars. It can also be solve in different ways which I can’t explain. It can also be easier to do fractions if you draw them out. The most easiest that I can explain on how to do it is that the easiest you can probably do is to print out a paper that has the fractions that has 1/1 all the way to 1/12.

So, in the first case. We have to find out the fractions we have to compare or do anything else. You will find 1/2 and 8/16 if you want to compare them. For example: 1/2 = 8/16, 1/2 + 8/16= 1. Some steps you have to do to prove you are right. At this time, you may have to use fraction strips to help you.

At first, grab a (1) bar first. The (1) means the whole number. Then, take one 1/2 and eight 1/16. After that, put the (1) bar above the other bars. Put the left bars together. You must realize that the (1) bar will be the same size as the other bar else. And finally, you can prove you are right.

If you think the samples are not enough and you want to do more challenging questions. For example: 3/4 + 1/2= ? Now, you need to do more "work". take four 1/4 and one 1/2. Then, put it together. Oh no! The (1) bar didn't fit them. What should I do? Now, stay calm. There's lots of way to solve it. At first, find their L.C.M. Their L.C.M. is four. Take the two (4) bars and you can find it. 3/4 + 1/2= 5/4. And now you may ask. I don't have another (4) bar. What should I do? Go home and print it out! Or, draw it on a paper sheet.

Though using the common denominator method works all the time, it is still good to know other methods to order fractions. In fact, using bench marks sometimes can be faster than the common denominator method. But how exactly does the fraction strips and bench marks work?

First, if we want to compare fractions, we take the number of strips of each fraction and put them on top of each other. For example, I would take 3 X 1/10 if one of my fractions were 3/10. Then, we'll able to tell which ones bigger by simply lining them up together and seeing which one is longer. This works for fractions with different denominators, too!

In addition, we can use fraction strips as bench marks to estimate the value of a fraction/fractions. We first take the fraction/fractions that we want to estimate and put them side by side together. After that, we can use different benchmarks and fractions to find the value of the fraction. For example, I would put three 1/10's and five 1/12's side by side if I were to estimate the amount of both the fractions added. Then, I can use different bench marks (e.g. 1/4,1/2,1, etc.) and smaller fractions.

In conclusion, I think that this is a great method to use for comparing and estimating value of fractions. Though this might not be a strategy for everyone, it is still good to know this. I hope that by using this method, many people will understand better of how to order and estimate fractions!

In conclusion, I think that this is a great method to use for comparing and estimating value of fractions. Though this might not be a strategy for everyone, it is still good to know this. I hope that by using this method, many people will understand better of how to order and estimate fractions!

FRACTION STRIPS! What fun!
Today we learned all about how to compare fractions using fraction strips and how useful this method is. In my opinion fraction strips are quite tedious when you have to put them together and it’s not accurate. Fractions strips can help you make accurate calculations and accurate estimates. For example, say we have the word problem (Marry has eaten 2/4+1/8 of the pizza, how much has she ate?) We can now put 2 1/4 and 1 1/8 fractions into our row of fractions. Firstly, put them side by side and compare it to one whole. We can see that it is higher then the half benchmark and less than the 3 quarters benchmark. As a result we can estimate that it will be between 1/2 and 3/4. So I know that the LCM of 4 and 8 is 8 so I used 8ths. Therefore I saw that 5 1/8 (which is equivalent to 5/8) is the answer. So Mary has eaten 5/8 of the pizza.
Thats how you use fraction strips!

Fraction strips are so fun and amazing!

So far in this school term, we have learned a lot about fractions. This time it’s about comparing fractions with fraction strips! Here’s a example. Let’s say we have two fractions like 3/6 and 4/8, how would we compare it? Well, I would try and find the common denominator, or the LCM.

6: 6, 12, 18, 24.
8: 8, 16, 24.

As we can see here 24 is the LCM. 3/6 x 4 = 12/24.
4/8 x 3 = 12/24. You do the same to the bottom as you do to the top. Looks like they are the same. I used fraction strips to help look at the fraction. It really does help!

After using fraction strips for comparing fractions, it helps me understand the question more. It fun to use and it doesn’t take time at all. I’ll totally use this again!

Using a benchmark is another useful way. For example if you have 2/7 and 5/6. I can see that 2/7 is not a half, and 5/6 is. You can tell right away that 5/6 is bigger than 2/7.

When comparing and adding fractions, there are many techniques available; one however stands out greatly, these are known as fraction strips. Fraction strips are pieces of a fraction such as 1/4 or 1/12, this allows you to fully visualize your work, and make benchmarks to simplify the task. Fraction strips are quite the amazing tool when comparing, adding and estimating fractions, and I will be explaining the use of these said strips.

Comparing fractions using fraction strips is a very simple and understandable technique. First you must decide which fractions you wish to compare, we will use 1/2, and 5/9. Next lay out both fractions parallel to each other IE. 1/2 can be placed above 5/9. After, simply look at the two fractions and view which one is the greater fraction. 5/9 > 1/2.

First we will be covering the use of fraction strips when adding fractions. For this example the two fractions we will be adding together will be 1/2 & 1/5. First we start by laying out the strips labeled 1/2 and 1/5 beside each other. Next we must calculate the LCM (Lowest common multiple) which is 10. Once we know the LCM of the two fractions, you want to locate the corresponding fraction strips, for our example we will have 1/10. Next start placing the 1/10 strips under the 1/2 and 1/5 strips until you match the length up exactly, if you have done it correct you will end of with 7 1/10 strips or 7/10. Using this we know know that the answer to 1/2 + 1/5 is 7/10. If you wish to write this on paper, simply multiply both fraction to the LCD (lowest common denominator) and add the numerators.

Estimating fractions is a very simple process. First you lay out the fractions beside each other, IE. 3/4 & 5/6. Then you simply use benchmarks such as 1/2, 1/4 or 1, and estimate the value of the fractions.

Comparing, adding, and estimating fractions are all very simple processes that involve the use of fraction strips. Comparing fractions simply has you comparing which fraction has a bigger size. Adding fractions has you finding the LCM of two fractions and using that to find a value. Estimating has you using benchmarks as a way to find a close value. Fraction strips are very useful when working with fractions, and they are very easy to understand as well

Fraction strips are lit based on Mr.Hong. The way you can start using fraction strips is by getting the fraction for example if the question is 2 3rds then I get 2 thirds and look for a different fraction with another denominator. After that is done get as many different strips that all have the same denominator that will equal to 2 thirds. If you need to estimate then you need to find as many strips that equal about the same fraction in your problem. With a benchmark you must draw a line with 0, half, and 1 whole with the fraction you have put it were you think it may belong on that number line.

Cool! Learn to use fraction strips is a great strategy to have when you want to estimate or calculate fractions! It makes things a lot more easier to understand. Okay, so let’s see how it works.

First, we take the fraction strips that you want to estimate or calculate, for example, 2/3 and 2/6. Then we line it up side by side. An easy way to estimate would be using the benchmarks like quarters or half and so on. You can simply tell if the fractions you’re calculating is bigger than a half or a whole. To get a more specific answer, you can try different fractions strips and add them together one by one to get the final answer. There’s also a trick for this one. You can try to find the LCM of first for some of the numbers. For my question: 2/3 and 2/6. The LCM would be 6. So now, I can use 1/6 fraction strips and line them up to find the exact amount of 2/3 and 2/6.

In my opinion, I think fractions strips is a really simple and straightforward way to estimate or calculate your fractions!

I already know how to change denominators, WHY do I need to learn how to use fraction strips? It takes longer and is so much more BORING.

Hmmm, well you're wrong. Sometimes it takes a shorter time to use fraction strips and it is also nice to have more than one way of comparing fractions. What if you are comparing numbers but it becomes very confusing, changing all those denominators? This is basically a much easier way to do it in a few different situations.

First of all, if you want to estimate it, you could do it like this. So, you're adding 5/12 and 1/5, right? So you'd take five twelfths and one fifth and then put them beside each other. Then you would put a half and a whole above/below it. Afterwards, you could estimate if it is closer to a half, a whole, or nothing.

In addition, there could be a situation where you actually have to calculate which two fractions together will equal another one. For example, let's say you want to see what 6/10 added to 1/5 is. Then you could easily just find out what the answer and an equivalent fraction is. For the answer, you just drag six tenths and a fifth together. Ta da! It's 8/10. But if you want a smaller number, we know that 8/10 can be reduced to a simplified version which is 4/5, so that would work as well.

In conclusion, fraction strips and benchmarks can be very helpful sometimes, to make work shorter or even to make things more fun by adding colors. :D

Let's talk about fraction strips first. We use fraction strips estimate and calculate. For example: 3/2 and 3/1, and we put them beside each other, now we have to estimate them, bench marks is the easier to help me estimate fractions, so we used bench marks, the bench marks can be quarters or a half or others, you can easily tells which one is bigger/smaller than a half or quarters and a whole. then if you want to calculate fraction, you can use fraction strip and put them under 1. you can also find the LCM for some of the members. For example: 4/2 and 3/2. The LCM would be:12, so I can put 1/12 fraction strips and find the exact amount of 4/2 and 3/2.

In conclusion, I think fraction strips and bench marks are pretty easy to understand and calculate or estimate fractions.

Let’s say I want to know how many pieces Mary ate out of a Whole pizza (1) and she said she ate 1/4 of the pizza at lunch then 2 hours later she eats 1/2 of the pizza and this is the cool part we can use the fraction strips! Ok first put the whole number up on top and then put the eaten fractions below and see how much is left!

Fraction strips and benchmarks... Useful methods that enable us to compare, or add fractions. You can also use fraction strips and benchmarks to estimate and calculate fractions. Be warned, my explanation probably won’t make the most sense and it’s all extremely long.

Comparing fractions with:
FRACTION STRIPS: when you have your fraction strips you select whatever fractions are needed. If you are adding fractions, take out those fractions and put them together in one line. Find the LCD or LCM of the denominators for all of the fractions and then add the numerators. Make sure the numerators that you have added together were multiplied or divided by the same number as the denominator. When you are adding the numerators it may become larger than the denominator. Fun fact, you now have an improper fraction. If you have an improper fraction then you should have a whole number. To turn your improper fraction into a mixed fraction you take the whole number out. Say if you had 9/6. 9 is obviously larger than 6 so you subtract 6 from 9 and now you have 3. Now you have an extra basically. The 3 isn’t exactly an extra but it isn’t a whole number. The mixed fraction you now have is 1 3/6. That’s how you can use fraction strips to add fractions.

How do you compare fractions with fraction strips? I sometimes estimate, I’m not sure if you are supposed to do this but, here I am. Exposing myself... If you have 1/2 and 1/3, one above the other. Which one looks bigger? 1/3 of course! I’M JUST KIDDING! It’s actually 1/2. Just imagine one whole pie. Half of that pie is gone, but half of the pie is still there. If you have one third of that pie left, that means two thirds are missing. If you didn’t know, when you split a pie in thirds you make it look like a peace symbol almost. You don’t need to find the least common denominator and all of that. JUST LOOK AT IT! You can clearly see a difference, right?

BENCHMARKS: when you use benchmarks, the most commonly used ones are the quarter marks and the halfway mark. You can use fraction strips to see if those common fractions look about the same length as whatever fraction you have.

Finally we got to the end! Just so you remember, fraction strips can be used for many things. Some of those things are calculating and comparing fractions.

Fraction strips are clearer because you can see which fraction is bigger. Fraction strips help us determine which is bigger instead of putting it on a number line. You might ask, “how would you use it?” For instance, if the fractions are 6/7 and 24/28, you would first get six 1/7 fraction strips, then you can receive twenty-four 1/28 fraction strips. After you have collected all the fraction strips, you must line them up. As a result, the two fractions should be equivalent. It is tedious but it is the safest way to answer these questions.

Benchmark is another excellent method, but they are not as clear as fraction strips. Benchmarks can be convenient but they have a possibility of failing you when fractions are less than half. You can put four benchmarks on a number line: a quarter, one half, one forth, and the whole. You can check if a number is over the halfway mark when you divide the denominator by 2. For example, if we have the fractions 2/4 and 15/20, you need to see if they are over or on the half mark. To do so, you first need to divide the denominator by two. After you have done that, you can clearly see that 2/4 is on the half mark and 15/20 is over. By doing so, you could have a good visual to assist you.

All in all, both methods are efficient when you are comparing fractions, but I suggest the fraction strips.
