EARLY HUMANS INQUIRY

Today, you worked on your inquiries for Social Studies on early humans. Mr. Fisher and Mrs. Altman did a great job explaining the criteria for what is expected of you, your inquiry notebooks, and your research. All three of us visited with many of you and helped push your learning forward by asking you questions and giving you suggestions on where to go next. Keep on pushing your learning!

1.) WORD WORK:

Continue working on your 'Gift of Words' according to the criteria handed out yesterday.

2.) MATH:

Complete pg 143 #1-5 and mark them at home if you didn't complete this in class today.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Just like yesterday, write about ONE of your other goals. Choose a different category. If you did academic yesterday, do personal or a behavioural goal today.

my goal is to improve my writing.

S My goal is to write with more detail and appropriate language

M I will measure my writing by asking my friends and Mr.Hong to comment on my work every week.

A I can try to do my P.A.R every day and see how much I am improving/not improving.I think this goal is possible,because it is not hard like: I will write the world's most popular book in 15 minutes?

R This is a goal that I want to focus on because I want to get 'extending' in writing. It is a primary goal

T I plan to become a better writer in 1 month give or take.

personal goal- get first place in speech contest
s-there will be a speech contest for the gavel club and L.O.T( the name of the class) in March. I got third place for two years already, this year I want to be the the first place.
m-every week I have my speech class, and at that day I will make a speech and see how I did and how to improve.
a- I will reach my goal if I practice my speeches and take notes in class. This is a short term goal, the contest is in march.
r-I can start right now without anything. This is a secondary goal for me, because now I'm more focused on school and art then speech contest.
t- I have two month to prepare, but I don't really need too start two months ahead. It is a reasonable goal for me

One of my academic goals were to ask for more feedback in my work.

SPECIFIC: There isn't one specific subject I'd like to ask for feedback from, I'd just ask for feedback whenever I need it. I think I can make a pretty big difference in my work if I start asking for more feedback.

MEASURABLE: I guess I'd measure my feedback on how much I improve, because feedback does help improve a lot. I can just compare my work, and see the difference between the level of work.

ACHIEVABLE: This goal is definitely attainable, because I just have to get into the habit of asking for feedback. Once I'm into that habit, I can just continue with everything else, and I'll naturally ask for feedback on my work.

RELEVANT: This goal is relevant, because I know that feedback is very important to almost everything I do, in, or out of school.

TIME: This goal may take a little getting used to, but I think I can achieve it by the end of second term.

Personal : To be more confident in the presentation

Specific: if there is a presentation,I will practice it a week before and maybe after school,I will go to my bedroom and pretend there are some classmate down there and say it loud, that might make me feel more confident because I practice it and I know what I have to say.

Measurable: I will do the presentation to my parents or my sister ,and they are going to make some comments,maybe if I am confident enough.

Attainable : I believe I can do it because I know I have enough time to practise it and I know what I have to say,

Relevant:I will do it every time when there are presentations, I don't think it will be hard if I practice hard.

Time bound: it will take me a few days because I just have to memorize what I have to say and just try not to be that shy.

my personal goal is to get better at soccer by the end of this month. I want to get better at soccer because I've watched soccer since I was little and seen my brother yell at the TV a lot because of the mistakes. I will get better at soccer by playing everyday at school lunch and recess.

Goal: Get better at math
S: I will accomplish this goal by studding for any math tests I have and work on math worksheets at home as well.
M: I can look at my test scores to see if I've improves or not.
A: I can achieve this goal. I can ask my teacher, parents or my fellow students if I ever get stuck. So I have what i need.
R: Since I have parents that are telling me to get better at math, studding for math is a priority for me right now.
T: I think this is going to take me to the end of the school year because we are already learning math in class and during summer vacation, I can work on math there to.

Specific: obey them at once when they tell me to do something or a chore and not argue
Measurable: I may notice results from this like mood shifts in my house and happier parents and I will be able to notice that
Attainable: I think I could constantly work on this but it would be easy enough to maintain
Realistic/reasonable: I honestly think that I may not listen to them sometimes but it will eventually work out
Timeliness: this could possibly start today or tomorrow

Goal: Be better at writing.
S) Take a writing class available and read different types of writing.
M) I can tell if my writing is getting better if people give me good feedback or when I can understand my writing better.
A) It only depends on me so if I try I can do it.
R) It is realistic since people are good writers and to be a good one, you have to try.
T) I want to get better before high school so I will start every day.

S) My goal this year is to ultimatly help around the help in terms of chores and jobs. I feel like doing "Work" when I'm bored so I always think of helping my mom in some way or another, but I don't have a specific job I can do.

M) This goal isn't masurable, but maybe if my mom gets more happy it could be a sign that I'm develeping my goal.

A) This goal is under my and my mom's control so I can eassily ask her for more chores around the house.

R) I guess this goal is relavant as I just want to make my mom more happy and do chores she doesn't always have too.

T) The goal itself won't take any time at all, so I guess it can be considered "Immediately?"

Behavioural Goal: Choose my mood (Zones of Regulation)

Specific: My goal is to have more control over my mood on a regular basis. And use more strategies when I'm in the yellow, blue, or red zone.
Measurable: I'll be able to tell if I'm improving if I'm a more happy person then I am normally. I'd be thinking about my mood a lot more which would mean I am always measuring my results.
Attainable: I know this is possible because It's MY mood, and it'll just take a bit of time to get into a habit of being happy.
Reasonable: I'd say this is important to me because I don't want to be sad and gloomy for my whole life, so I should make this a priority since it's a goal to do with my mental health.
Timeliness: I think this should be my life-time goal because I don't want to be happy, but then go right back to sad.

My P.A.R.

M.) I can measure my results by first asking someone to watch me and then ask them how I did. I can also stop and ask myself where I think I struggle the most and practice on that.

A.) I believe it is possible for me to reach this outcome because I'm pretty sure that if I keep practicing really hard I can improve a lot.

R.) My goal is relevant and I should totally focus on it right now because our competition is in February and I'm freaking out!!!

T.) I think this is a long-term goal because no-one can get better at dance in a few days. I would say at least 2-3 months but since our competition is in February I better speed things up. I feel like it is a reasonable and manageable time-bound because I have it all planned out.

@Eknoor- Try to expand on your ideas a bit, and try to vary your words a bit more. Great goal and plan. also, maybe to measure your improvement, you could ask the same person to watch you each time and rate you, honestly, from one to one hundred or something like that. Otherwise they will probably just say you were great no matter what.

P.S. I chose such a big number because it is more specific and leaves more room for improvement.

Acceptance day is coming up! I always love hearing the story of how it started, and am proud to say that at the annex, our principal was the one who started the whole acceptance day flash mob idea and put together the first one. But it seems we are not doing a flash mob this year. That is why I am going to organize a flash mob. I am looking for a A.D.C- Acceptance Day Council- to help and anyone willing to dance. All I know so far is that it will take place on February 20th. I need the council to help me plan the rest, and we will each have a job- one person will choose and prepare the music, a small group of people the dance, and another person can find a place to do it. Anyone is welcome to dance. The council people can if they want. A lot of people probably still have old pink day flash mob T-shirts, right? And if not, they can still wear pink.
I need your help to make it happen. Feel free to ask me for more info, I am open on Hangouts, or you can ask here. Whatever works. Remember, it doesn't take much to change the world, and helping friends, family, and anyone in need can start a revolution. There is still plenty of hope for humanity.

Behavioral goal: Being more social
S: I'm quite shy when it comes to meeting new people like my parents friends, I want to change that and actually talk to them instead of being awkwardly shy and barely answer.
M: I could try being more open to people I haven't really talked to and teachers to see if I don't mumble or talk quietly. Meeting new people also lets me have more friends.
A: It should be possible because I'm not shy around my parents and best friends so if I be more social to others commonly I would get used to it and not be as shy.
R: It's reasonable because I go to new places. For example there's a 1/10 I'm going to Churchill so if I go to McNeil I would meet a lot of new people. If I'm socially awkward then I would be the lonely kid I am and it's a high school, new classes, new school.
T: This is a lifetime goal for me. I can't predict the future but I might move again or go to new places I haven't known of so being more social is a definite goal for me.

Goal: Sitting still

Specific: My goal is to sit still for as long as I can without fidgeting around. So that every time when Mr.Hong looks at me, my feet shouldn't be in the air.
Measureable: I will be able to tell if I am improving by maybe looking at how many times a day my feet are up in the air. If no one says, "Caden sit properly" or anything like that, I will know that I am improving.
Attainable: I know that this goal is attainable because it really isn't that hard. Sometimes I just get really bored so I start getting antsy.
Reasonable: I would say this goal is reasonable because I feel like that I can accomplish this goal even in 1-2 months which isn't a really long time.
Timely: I think this goal should be for my whole grade 7 year because if I just stop in 1 or 2 months then I might start moving around again.

Goal of choice: Be nicer to my family (specifically my brother), by being more patient and self regulating.
S) My goal is detailed enough that I understand it. I can be more specific and add more detail by adding when I plan to put it in action.
M) I can measure my success by counting the times I get in an argument with my brother, and see if the number is decreasing. I will measure the results everyday, in my head.
A) I am very confident that I can reach this goal. I have all the resources I need, including determination. I hope that this goal can be completed in the short term.
R) I know that I’m going to have to get along with my brother when I’m older, and I would like to get a head-start now. This is my highest priority behavioral goal at the moment (at home, that is). I’d say this is a primary goal.
T) I’m going to be optimistic and say that hopefully I’ll have a better relationship with my brother in the next month. However a much more reasonable time frame would be at least 6 months...

My goal is to put more effort into my work by the end of grade seven.
S: I will accomplish this by spending more time with my assignments and being less careless about my work.
M: I can look at my grades, to make sure I am really doing better.
A: I can achieve this, I just need to be less lazy when it comes to work.
R: This is important to me because I don't want to be falling behind, especially in high school.
T: I might have a bit of a hard time, because I'm so lazy, but I think I can accomplish this by the end of the school year. if I didn't, my high school teachers probably wouldn't be too happy with me...

Goal: To listen to my parents more
S:I will listen to my parents more by just doing it because they are not going to tell me to do something too hard
M: I could ask my parents if I doing better listening more to them
A: It is possible for me to listen more to them because I just need to just do what they want me to do
R: I know I don't really listen to them a lot but soon I should be better at listening to them
T: I think I'll be better at listening to them in about a month

During this wonderful year, my personal goal is to finish writing my stories this year. I will follow my plan to achieve this goal.

Specific- I will complete my goal by following a plan that I made. The plan is to write at least three pages a week in my stories until October. Then I will ask for feedback from my family and friends. By the end of the year, I should be ready to publish my stories.

Measureable- I will make sure to follow the plan. If I don’t end up writing three pages in one week, then I will write an extra page in the next week.

Attainable- I think that this goal is achievable because I know how long it takes me to write a page. As long as I follow my plan, I should be able to reach my goal.

Relevant- I love writing and this is one of the only ways I can keep my brain from overflowing with thoughts and ideas.

Time-bound- I will do this until the end of the year because by then I should be finished my story.

Overall I am certain that I will achieve my goal if I stick with my plan and keep my ideas flowing. In the next post, I am going to write about my behavioural goal.

My personal goal: Improving my Korean!

Specific: I want to be more fluent in Korean so that if I go to Korea one day, I would be able to communicate. I will try to remember a few phrases each day, and say some random sentences from time to time.

Measurable: I would be able to figure out how much I have improved by listening to how fluent I am, and maybe talk to some people that are fluent.

Attainable: Although learning a language isn't easy, everyone is able to learn by using their effort and time. I believe I will be able to hold it in my hands comfortably in a few months. Even if I'm not that good, a language isn't something to rush.

Reasonable: A few months time is quite reasonable for me since I have motivation for this goal. I always wanted to understand without waiting for subtitles. And that applies to everything.

Timeliness: This will take me very long and probably over the goals' time. but I shall practice everyday and hope that I am doing everything that is relevant to practicing a new language.

Goal: Improve on my writing
Specific: Improve on my grammar skills and use more advanced words.
Measurable: I will ask the teacher, classmates, parents for feed back in where I need to improve and where I did good on. I can also just ask them if I’m on the right track or not.
Achievable: It is achievable because I can read everyday, read when ever I have time at least 30 min a day then it would be quite easy to complete this goal.
Reasonable: This is reasonable because it just is as long as I read everyday.
Timely: Thos goal will probably take me a while. Probably about few months.

My goal is to participate more in class (academic).

S: During class discussions, I want to raise up my hand more often. Whenever I have a question or I have an answer to a question, I want to raise my hand.

M: I can measure by seeing how many times I've raised my hand in a month. I can write it down somewhere and see if my number increases.

A: I know this goal is possible to reach because many people in class participate.

R: This goal is relevant because it helps me learn. If I'm struggling on something, I can just raise my hand and ask for help.

T: It may take a while for me to get use to doing this, but I want to do this more often before high school. Then in high school I can participate more and get good grades.

S: Ask questions or for feedback to see if I’m on the right track.
M: I will mostly likely know if I’m doing this goal. I’m also going to see some improvement in my work.
A: It’ll be a while until I get used to it but this goal is achievable because I have to count on myself to ask.
R: This goal is relevant because it will help me learn and improve.
T: I really do have to get used to doing this. I’m setting a time goal for the end of the school year. If I actually start asking I will most likely reach this goal, hopefully anyways.
