ELECTRICITY/MAGNETISM - Challenge #3 and #4

Ratio/Proportions: The Forbidden City

Today, you continued working on your maps of Beijing. It looks like the majority of you made progress on it over the weekend. In the afternoon, you continued your inquiry into electricity and magnetism. All groups were able to complete each of the two challenges today and were able to prove that electricity produced magnetism. The 'AHA' moments that I saw were of pure joy and showed me you all have a love for learning! Stay curious and willing to learn new things!

Control: To have power over something. The power to tell people or influence them on what to do.
Independent Variable: A variable that doesn't rely on another for results. We changed the independent variable to make sure that the light bulb lights up.
Dependent Variable: A variable that depends on other things or another factor. If we remove the wire from the closed circuit, then the whole thing will fall apart and it will not work.

Today in class, we learned about electricity, and how it has to do with magnetism. There are three words that help conduct an experiment, and I will be defining, and giving examples of each one. The first word is control. Based on the video we watched, and my background knowledge of science fairs, I know that this is what you have power of in the experiment. It's what you decide to change, or keep same. For example, if you were measuring the growth of two plants with the amount of water received, you'd have to have everything-except for sunlight- to be the same. The next word is independent variable. An independent variable is a factor that won't change based on the other factors. For example, you can be a certain age, and no matter how much food you eat, or how many hours of television you watch, you will still be the same age, until your next birthday. The final word is dependent variable, and like it sounds, this is the complete opposite of independent variable. This is a factor that changes based on other events that happen along with it. For example, the score you receive on a test is dependent on how many hours you slept the night before, and how hungry you were while taking it.

If your still a bit confused, I'll explain each word with an example. So lets say that you are doing an experiment with ice-cream and you want to know how fast the ice-cream melts in room temperature. The fan is on, the blinds are open (it's sunny outside) and the fire is on. The dependent variable is the ice-cream because you want to measure the amount of time it takes the ice-cream to melt. The controls is also the ice-cream/room temperature because you can't change that. If you do change those two then that means you restarted. The independent variables would be the fan, fireplace and sunlight because those effect the room temperature. I hope that helped.

Today, we had an fun time revewing the topic and science behind electricity and how it relates to magnetism. There are multiply ways to conduct an experiment, but I'll be showing you the three that I learned today in class.

Scientific variables, honestly I never heard of it until now. I found out that there's three types of variables. Control, independent, and a dependent variable.
A control variable is where you don't change anything, you leave it be. An example of a control variable are rocks from our ecosystem. You can't control a rock in any way unless you do some weird experiment on it. There's nothing in a rock but the rock itself. It doesn't grow or change, it stays as a rock. An independent one is where you change it based on the factors and it doesn't need to rely on anything else but itself. Like how we need to change or switch positions for a light bulb to turn on where the independent variable stays the same because it just relies on itself. A dependent variable is where it relies on other factors. For example it's a wire that's part of a circuit from our science experiment. It relies on the other wire to turn on the lightbulb because without it it's just going to do nothing.
Those are the three variables I learned from science.

After three days, the green onions that has sunlight grew taller, but the group of green onions without sunlight turned yellow and died. This experiment proved that sunlight is important to the growth of green onions. The growth of green onions depend on sunlight.

Yay! We’re going to do an experiment. In order to do a successful experiment, we need to have control variables, dependent variables, and independent variables. What are these variables? These variables are different parts in an experiment. The control variables are things we don’t change and keep the same. For example, in our ecosystems experiment, the container, the dirt, the grass, the snail, and the slug are the control variables because we have never changed them at all. Things that we change are called independent variables. For example, the amount of water and the food are the independent variables because we have changed them throughout the experiment. There's more to expirements than you think. Varibles, so things that can change, play a big part- but what are the different variables? The specific variables depend on the expirement, but there are three kinds that separate them. Dependent variables, controled variables, and independant variables. Let's get started.
1. Independant variables. This is what you decide to change- like where you put your expirement, or ow much of something you add. It is called an independant variable because you can only change one thing in an expirement or you won't have accurate results.
2.Controled variables. A controled variable is the opposite of an independant variable. It is what you keep the same. Again, if you change more than one thing you won't get accurate results. So a lot has to stay the same- they have to be controled.
3.Dependant variables. The dependant variable is what you observe, measure, or record. I think it is dependant because it relies on the other two to be accurate. If one of the other variables are off, so will the dependant variable.
See? Way more complicated. Well, I guess that DEPENDS (hem hem) on what expirament you were thinking of. Some are way simpler than others. Some have to be more CONTROLED too, or things could explode! But there are really easy ones that you can do INDEPENDANTly. XD

Science terms sometimes are hard. But that is why we need to learn them. Today Mr.Hong is sick and I am your substitute teacher. I will be teaching you what independent variables, dependent variables and controls. Independent variables is the one thing that you change in an experiment. It is the thing that you do differently to one or more of the subjects. A dependent variable is the thing that you measure. the thing that you are comparing with your different subjects. The controls are the things that stays the same for every subject. They will not change and will be controlled. Today Mr.Hong is sick and I am your substitute teacher. I will be teaching you what independent variables, dependent variables and controls. Independent variables is the one thing that you change in an experiment. It is the thing that you do differently to one or more of the subjects. A dependent variable is the thing that you measure. the thing that you are comparing with your different subjects. The controls are the things that stays the same for every subject. They will not change and will be controlled. 'Ring ring' All right class class is dismissed and you will also get Thursday off because you are awesome.

Variable. Is that when we are very able to do something. Umm no... There different types of variables in science. Control, independent, and dependent variables. Lets begin with controlled variables. What this is is basically something you don't change. For example, you don't the way the wires are connected to the battery or else it won't work. A independent variable is something that you change. For example, the amount of batteries you have powering a light bulb. Finally, a dependent variable is the results of an experiment or measurement. For example, when you put too many batteries to power a light bulb, the results would probably being it blowing up. Now that you know what they mean you're probably variable ( Very able ) to do you work independently know.

There's more to experiments than you think. Varibles, so things that can change, play a big part- but what ARE the different variables? The specific variables depend on the experiment, but there are three kinds that separate them. Dependent variables, controled variables, and independant variables. Let's get started.
1. Independant variables. This is what you decide to change- like where you put your expirement, or how much of something you add. It is called an independant variable because you can only change one thing in an experiment or you won't have accurate results.
2.Controled variables. A controled variable is the opposite of an independant variable. It is what you keep the same. Again, if you change more than one thing you won't get accurate results. So a lot has to stay the same- they have to be controled.
3.Dependant variables. The dependant variable is what you observe, measure, or record. I think it is dependant because it relies on the other two to be accurate. If one of the other variables are off, so will the dependant variable.
See? Way more complicated. Well, I guess that DEPENDS (hem hem) on what experiment you were thinking of. Some are way simpler than others. Some have to be more CONTROLED too, or things could explode! But there are really easy ones that you can do INDEPENDANTly. XD

Today in the science class, we made 2 experiments about electricity and magnetism and we also learned 3 things which are control, independent, and dependent variables. Now I am going to tell you what are these words mean and I will also make an example in each word and show clearly about what they mean. For the first one 'control' , it means that things that keep in the same , which mean you don't change it you are doing the same thing every time. For example , last time we did the project about ecosystems and we actually don't change how many sprays do we sprays in it , we also did the same amount of same every time, because we think that that much water is enough, if we put more than it next time and the dirt might have too much water . Secondly, 'independent variable' which mean the thing that change by the person that who do the experiment. For example , in the ecosystem project,the independent variable is how much water did I put. Thirdly, 'dependent variable ' which means what is changed due to the change in the independent variable. For example , in the ecosystem project , when we gave food to the snails or slugs , the weight of the snails will always change because they ate every day and they gonna go heavier.

In class today we learned about scientific variables. We learned about three different types of them, which is control, independent, and dependent variables. First, a control variable is when you don’t change something, just kind of let it do its own job. For example, during the science ecosystem assignment, the rock is a control variable. It won’t rely on anything else because a rock is just a rock and nothing else inside or related to it. Second, a independent variable is something that you decided to change in a experiment. When you water the grass, the water will be the the independent variable, because I can choose the amount I’ll water the grass with. Third, the dependent variable will be something you measure or observe. How tall the seed drop would be the dependent variable, I’m measuring it as it grow. These word can be used in many other science experiments, and many different ways.

We learned about different types of variables today. It was quite fun, lighting up the lightbulbs, but it’s the variables that form a great experiment worth studying. Knowing the different types of variables is important and basic for any scientist. If you want to become a scientist, I suggest you pay attention. Now, without further ado, I shall give you my definitions for the different variables, to give you a clear understanding of what it means.Number one. Let’s start easy. How about the control variable? This variable is quite straightforward. It’s when you don’t change anything involving the experiment. I think this variable applies to experiments when the scientists figure out and know what they have to do to improve, and test it out. As the video says, I shall use the flower and water situation as an example. If you’re keeping the amount of water you put in specifically, and how many seeds you out in, that’s a control variable. Number two. This one has a slight change, but it’s still technically a different type. This one is called, the dependent variable. This is a variable you measure. Like the amount of water your put alongside the seeds. The sprouting and blossoming flower would also be the dependent variable you would measure. Last but finally not least, the independent variable. This variable is when you want to change the outcome of an experiment. That one independent thing your remove or add could be crucial to your investigation. It’s either do, or die, to state easily. I know you would probably wonder, why can’t I just add a bunch of stuff in? Why does the thing have to be by itself when added or taken out? Well, the truth is, if you added a bunch of stuff in and it works better than it did before, that’s an accomplishment. But, you would have trouble finding which component of the experiment caused it to do better. You would have to conduct more sessions to actually find out which one helped and which didn’t. These notes and facts should help you on your way of making clear investigations. I hope I did help, and understand if you didn’t before.

Sorry for the excessive use of ‘variables’ and ‘experiments’.

Today we learned about variables and those types of variables were control, independent, and dependent. So first is the control variable which is when you don't change the thing or something. Second is the independent variable which is something that you decided to change in the thing your working on. Like if your wanting to make the light bulb light up with batteries and wires you can choose to light it up more with more batteries or less with less batteries but with to much electricity in your light bulb something bad will happen. The last variable is the dependent variable which is something you measure or observe. Like if you try things to do things like with electricity or magnetism or both you can observe what your doing to show what you tried or did.

Electricity and magnetism is a fun unit. You can do experiments, trial and error. You might know how complete the experiment, but don’t know the science behind it. Well, we learned about the three variables. They are control, dependent, and independent variables. First, the control variable means like something is the same not changing. So an example is when you follow your daily plan. You make a plan and it works for you, you don’t have to rush through anything then you would just keep that plan and not change it. Secondly, the dependent variable means to measure/observe something. For example when you plant a plant and you measure how tall it is to see if it grew or not. Lastly, the independent variable which means like what you decide to change in your experiment. For example when you water a plant. Maybe the plant doesn’t look very well even though you are giving it the same amount everyday. You would decide to change the amount of water you give to the plant so it survives. These can be used in many different experiments or just use it regularly in your daily life.

In class we learned about VARIABLES! Yea.. variables. And there were three terms that went along with our lesson. Control variables, Independent variables, and Dependent variables, and I'm gonna teach you guys what those mean. So first is control variables, what are control variables you may ask? Well I'll tell you. Controlled variables are the things that stay the same through out all of the experiments. So basically the opposite of what a independent variable is. For example if you were to have a popsicle sitting down on a plate in the living room, with your fire place on. And you wanted to see how long it took to melt. Well if you moved your popsicle to a different location, that would be a independent variable, the controlled variable would be the fire place, because we kept that on.
Now we move on to independent variables. Like I said in my popsicle example, the independent variable is the thing you change in your experiment to see if there is a different outcome. And finally our dependent variable is the object or thing that we are measuring in our experiment. So earlier when I said that we were trying to figure out how long the popsicle took to melt with the fireplace on. That was the dependent variable. It's what the experiment is all about, and why you are doing it in the first place.

Today in science we learned about scientific variables. I love science and what we are learning is going to be fun. What is a independent variable? You may ask, well it is something you change in an experiment such as how much water you add or where you put your ecosystem when it is sunny and independent variables like that. We gradually added more water each time. The next scientific variable is a Dependent Variable, it is something you measure and observe over time. We did this in our ecosystem project with our snails, we focused on them a lot. Our last one is controls, this one is relatively straight forward, it is something that stays the same NO MATTER WHAT. Our ecosystem evolved and changed over time but there was one thing that stayed the same, it was where we put out box. We had a place and it wouldn’t get much sun at all so that caused our grass to be not so successful. Lots of these thing can help and affect your ecosystem, I find this really cool.

An independent variable could be a change in the amount of water you add or a change in placement based on sun exposure or temperature. Another scientific variable is a dependent variable, this is a variable measured and observed over time. We measured and observed the snails in our ecosystem project. The last scientific variable is controls; this is something that stays the same NO MATTER WHAT. Our ecosystem evolved and changed over time but there was one thing that stayed the same, it was where we put our box. Our ecosystem box was in a location that did not get much sun which negatively affected the growth of our grass. There are many variables that can change the results of experiments; this is the cool part of science.
