How does this work?

Today, you built your background knowledge of electricity and magnetism. Many of you have some basic knowledge of both topics, but don't know the science behind what you know. You will be starting an investigative inquiry on electricity and magnetism. You will be given tasks and challenges and you will document your learning along the way in your science journals. Get ready for an 'ELECTRIFYING' unit! In Language Arts, you watched an example of how a 'BOOK CLUB' runs. You watched Mr. Hong facilitate a 'BOOK CLUB' discussion with the 'WESLANDIA' book group and we reviewed the 'BOOK CLUB' action criteria you created last week. Following this, all groups conducted their successful first 'BOOK CLUB' discussion.

Good and bad things happen, just like my book club discussion today: A good thing is that every was able to share what they wrote and we all (I think) wrote something that added to our thinking. It was also a pretty funny discussion. The bad side is that the rest of my group only completed 1 or 2 thinking and learning questions which meant only I shared the last question. There was this group member who asked us a what if question where we were in Olemauns scenario. At first we were on topic but then it went downhill when this group member said something unexpectedly. I think the purpose of book club discussions is to share your thinking, add to it and to just talk to your group mates about the book in general.

Opposites attract, but when magnets go near each other, it either pushes the magnet apart or pulls on it when getting closer. In this case it's pushing each other. The ball on top of the other magnet is being pushed by it making it to stay there to float on top. Unless it's pushed down then the two magnets will attract. It's like the wind from the heater pushing a balloon to make it float.
(I'm honestly pretty sure this isn't it but oh well.)

One thing that went good is how we all got to share everything. No one made the group go downhill and the procces of sharing information was smooth along the group. Most people in our group had everything done and that made sharing information a lot easier so they had a lot to share about one part and another.

What didn't go well is the amount of time we actually had to share what we learned, every time got to share all there information (1,2,3) except I only shared two because Mr Hong had to dismiss us.

PAR #1:
In my opinion, my book club discussion went pretty well today. There were a few ups and downs in the discussion. One of the advantages we had were that my group only consisted of three people (including me). This made it so much easier to control the noise, and the amount of people who talked. We got through more, because there was less to share. I guess a disadvantage would be that we only had three people, so we wouldn't have that much information as some of the other groups. Some of us thought the same things, so that would decrease the amount of thinking/knowledge that we would gain. I think that the purpose of book club discussions would be so that you can spread your thinking, as well as learn from others. You can make more connections based on your friends' thinking, or help your friends expand your knowledge.

I have seen something like this, it's called a floating table, where magnetism is used, so two layers of the table will float above it. I think this contraption is simply two of the same side magnets, facing each other. what I don't understand is why the metal ball isn't spinning to the opposite side. I guess I'm wrong about the whole magnet thing, because there's no way the ball wouldn't have immediately spun to the other side...

Today for the Novel aproach, we did some thinking and learning questions, and then got in groups to share our answers. We mostly stayed on task, although there were a couple off- topic comments and plently of at least somewhat on topic laughes. Unfortunatley most of us had the same general things writen down, but other than that I think we were pretty successful and had a few meaningful responses. We learned and had a great time!

What went well was that everyone participated and we weren't fooling around. What didn't go well was that I couldn't really hear anything and people kept laughing (don't look at me). I also didn't learn anything from others (no offense to my group).

While doing our book club discussions there was things that worked well and things that didn't. A thing that worked well for my book club discussion was that basically everyone finished their 3 gift of words so didn't slow down that much. A thing that didn't work well was the fact of how everyone had very similar opinions so some people didn't receive new thinking. I think the purpose of book club discussions is so we can understand the book better by hearing other people's thinking. That way, we can expand our background knowledge.

So did my book club actually even go well? Hmm, maybe. Something that went well might be that we all had a chance to share our thoughts and opinions on 3 thinking and learning questions. We all didn't talk when someone was sharing and all of us were actively listening. Now, the things that did not go well. I could go on and on but I will just say one. People in the book club discussion were getting off topic quite a bit. Not going to say names but lets just say they were talking about some really really weird and off topic things.

I have seen this picture somewhere and there is actually a video on it on YouTube about it. So first of all the ball is actually not floating, but the ball is being dropped by someones hand or another one of those things the guy has in his hand. What this object is, is a ball that is made out of neodymium and neodymium is magnetic. Which makes the ball magnetic. Now the object in the guys hand is a magnetic object that has a hole in the middle which the ball can then drop down. Here's the twist though, the inside of that object in the guy's hand has an opposing current that basically makes the ball drop slowly down the cylinder. This object can demonstrate Lenz's law. I think this also shows that opposites attract and likes repel.

I think that my group discussion went pretty amazing because all of the people participated and people were adding discussing about other people's thoughts.

What didn't work was that the discussion started to seem off-topic but Mr.Hong says that it's good discussion.... To be honest I don't really know.

I dont have time so Im going to finish both PAR's quickly and if I have time later I will edit.

PAR 2:
I think that the contraption works with gravity and magnets repelling. I think that the steel ball is falling down with gravity, and the magnet and the case thing are similar poles so they are pushing away.

Magnets. They are really cool and interesting. How magnets work is opposites attract and likes repel. For example, let's say we have 2 magnets. Each magnet has a side which is N and the other side is S. If you put N and S together, they would pull into each other, but if you put S and S or N and N together they'll push apart. That is what is happening in the picture. The ball is a magnet and so is the thing that the person is holding. They are both on the same sides which causes the ball the float.

I think my group did pretty well today although, we got off task a few times. Something that didn't work so well was us laughing a lot. This wasted time, since we could've been sharing our ideas with each other. Next time, I hope to stay on task. Something that worked well was only having three people. Having a smaller group meant that we could take a bit more time sharing, and explaining our thinking more clearly. I think the purpose of having these book club discussions is to grow our background knowledge and learn from others. For example, say you don't have any idea what something means so you don't write anything down. Once your group shares you should have something to write down.

Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of magnets, one set to repel and push the train up off the track as in levitation (hence Maglev, Magnetic-levitation, then another set to move the "floating train ahead at great speed taking advantage of no friction. Within certain "medium range ocations (usually between 200-400 miles) Maglev can compete favorably with high speed rail and airplanes.

Details help you understand more and push your thinking forward. You can also learn lots from other people during the book club discussion. Book club discussions are really fun but sometimes we get off task or get distracted from friends. (To be honest, this happened to me today). The point of a book club is to see other people's opinions and to learn more and for your peers to help push your thinking.

The 'Matchbox Diary' group is a very socially awkward group. It was a very awkward start but after sharing, it didn't seem as awkward as it was in the beginning. That was something that well in our group discussion. another thing was being able to finish sharing our opinions about the questions and being able to add to each other's thinking. There are always another side to things. What about the things that didn't go that well. Other than the fact that we all thought that the thinking and learning questions were not as deep, having an awkward group was very difficult as well. Being an awkward potato like myself, it's somewhat difficult for me to communicate with people that I don't talk to as often (even though Marina is a close friend of mine). Since we were all awkward, all we did was pretty much let the person who is talking talk then move on. I think the purpose of having any group activity is to able to collaborate with people that you don't usually talk to. I also think that it's for expressing what we think about the books and communicating with other people what they think about a certain thing. Other than having a few hardships along the way, I'm actually glad that I'm able to be in this amazing awkward book club.

Hold on one second. What even is that? I've never in my life, until now, seen something so fascinating! Seeing a metal in the air... that's very interesting. From the video we watched in class, I have a feeling that it's "the same repel". As some of us know, having the south and the south or the north and the north repel from each other. It doesn't allow the two magnets to attract. I'm thinking that the the two items are magnets and it's the same side repelling. That concludes on what I think about that contraption.

Today I think that our book club discussion was successful because we all knew we had to contribute something, and so we did. Even when some of us didn’t have all of the questions done we were able to do them quickly enough to have something to discuss, and I’m happy about that. However although we didn’t get too off topic we did all start laughing at one point, and it did take a while to regulate after that. We do book club discussions so that we can add to our learning, and I did today.

When you are in a book club discussion, things can go right or wrong. That why in this paragraph, I will be showing you what went right and wrong in today's book club discussion.
Right: We made a lot of connections, which is always a good thing for anything. Okay so something like this happened. We first talked about how the main character made mosquito repellent, then that discussion became a how many mosquitoes are in the summer and then, well you get the point. But then again....
Wrong: We got a bit off topic. Although we where a bit too off topic, Mr.Hong said that is good. Only if it has something to do with the book.

I'm guessing, if a north magnet and another north magnet push away from each other, then maybe the ball and the inside of the tube thing is also both north magnets. So they push away from each other. I'm not sure okay? It's just an INFERENCE.

My groups book club discussion went well because we added to each others thinking by saying what we thought about the questions which was mostly different then the other group members. But what didn't go so well was when the topic is switched to something else but sometimes it would still be on topic.

Please pardon the fact that I have yet to learn that many terms for magnet things...

Since likes repel, and opposites attract, I’d say that the reason the ball is levitating is because two south poles, or two north poles are facing each other. However, from my experience magnets tend to try their best to collide and magnetize? (I used to play this game where there’s a plastic triangle with maybe 9 or so holes and 9 plastic balls with magnets inside that you have to place on top of the holes without the balls sticking together, which unless you were extremely lucky, they did.)

I think book club discussion is important. We can learn a lot from other people’s thinking, but this time, the discussion did not seem to be very meaningful. Many people joked instead of really talking about the meaning of the book.

Alot of things went well in our group like our conversations because we never went off topic but we did about 2 times. We alsoadded to eachothers background knowlage which made our thinking even deeper. The thing that didnt go as smoothly as i wished was some people kept on talking to much and never let the others talk and it looked like they were having there own conversation. Like i said our group went off topic 2 times talking about China and the apocalypse. I think the purpose of having a book club discussion is for feedback and to also add to your thinking or background knowlage.

'Why are you guys talking about China's mosquitos?' We were doing our book club discussion when Mr.Hong erupted us. Our discussion was mainly good we thought about a lot of things I never thought before. Like what will happen it a drought happened. But we kind of got of task because we became excited and started talking about things that have almost nothing to do with the discussion like apocalypse and China's mosquitos. It kind of slowed us down and made all of us laugh. But mostly the book club was awesome. It is very important because it pushes everyone's thinking.
Magnet stick to each other or repel each other. They are very not useful and they is a liquid magnet made by scientists. In the photo he took two magnets a big one and a small one he held the big one and turned the small magnet till it repels the big one. Let the small one go and you got a floating magnet!

So in our book club discussion or in any discussion there would always be something good that happens or something bad that happens. For my group (Going places) one good thing was that everything went very smoothly and everyone participated which made us do it quicker and again smoother. In our group there wasn't much of a bad thing but the only one is that some people were very quiet and mumbling so it slowed us down a bit.

I think the purpose of these book club discussion is that we get to learn others opinion and thinkings so we can increase our background knowledge.

In the photo of a levitating sphere thing, I think that the sphere is a magnet and the other thing is also a magnet and they are both repelling each other so it would float and it would seem "Magical".

I was happy that we had time today to get together with our book clubs. We had Mr. Hong showed us an example with the Weslandia group. In our discussion, everyone shared what they had written down and participated which was a good thing. Everyone had great things in their "My Thinking" sections. Something that wasn't going well during our discussion was that some people (like me) were laughing and were off task and some people mumbled while they were sharing.

I think the purpose of these book club discussions is that we get the opportunity to collaborate more with one another and we get to share our ideas with each other. I also think that it is a great way to learn from others too.

Well, we all know opposites attract. Which means similar poals repel. Maybe in this picture that is what is happening? The only problem with that is when the magnets repel, they tend to go sideways or stick at a different angle. Plus, if the magnet is round it should just turn so the opposite poals fac each other and it sticks. My theory is that the bas is some kind of reversed electromagnet. Although, the same rules may still apply... which brings us to my second and more likely theory. The magnt could be a superconductor. A superconductor is a magnet that has been made very cold- really super cold, around -269 C!!! That is insanely cold. Superconductors are very unique in the magnet world. A superconducting material will tend to exclude all magnetic fields, however superconducting materials will lose their superconductivity (no matter how cold you make them) if exposed to too strong of a magnetic field. The presence of any magnetic field tends to lower the critical temperature of any superconducting material- so the more magnetic field present, the colder you have to make the material before it will superconduct.
So the magnet in the picture is most likely a superconductor, at least if you ask me. The only thing with that is that superconductors le off a bit of steam, and in that picture it doesn't... but anyway, it lookes photoshoped to me. Just a bit TOO shiny, don't you agree?

- [ ] Today , we had the book club discussion with the classmates that who have the same book with me , and we all share our own opinion and like share our thinking of the questions. I think we actually did pretty well. We did well because we will always help others if someone need help , and we also are quite focused we will not off task , we all also got a chance to share our opinions. Also, we didn't have any arguments during we had the discussion , we won't use some bad words to describe what people say , also I will always listen others opinions and not doing other stuff. But I think we also did something that not too well. During the discussion, and we didn't know how to read the character name, and when we said the name weirdly, we started laughing but not only laughed for a second , and I think we actually spend some of the time in there, which actually also waste time so I think we did not quite well in it , but I think overall we really did a great job, most of the time we were still in focused. I think book club discussion helps us a lot because we can share our opinions and when we don't know how to do some of the questions, we can hear what other said , and I will know the answer which sometimes also know more about the story , it also helps to extend my background knowledge when I hear what other said , so I think it actually helped me a lot.

It worked because of opposite attract. When the magnet ball is dropping and the lower magnet will push the ball up which means that the ball will never fall off , cause every time when the ball drop off , the lower one push it and which called opposite attract.

Today Div.2 did Book clubs for different picture books. Everyone in our group got to share their opinion and thinking. We add on to other’s thoughts and came up with some new questions. Sometimes we get of task and waste our time, but once someone start to talk again, we would listen and get back to our discussion again. I think book clubs can help us get to the others point of view, what they thought about the story or the sentence. Maybe after the discussion you will have a different thinking.

In a group discussion many things can go right or wrong. When we were doing the book club discussion today, my group did pretty well. During the discussion we were on topic the whole time and we all completed what we were assigned. However, we didn’t have enough time to share everything that we had. In conclusion, I think that the purpose of a book club discussion is to learn from each other.

In magnets, opposite ends attract each other and the same ends will push away from each other. I think that the ball and the magnet have the same ends pointing towards each other, therefore the ball can float in the air.

When in groups there can be both bad and good things happening. Bad as mean maybe someone in your group isn’t listening or participating and good things is technically the opposite of bad things like everyone is participating and is respectful for the person talking. So one good thing that happened during in our book club discussions was even though most of us had similar ideas we still added to each others thinking. There wasn’t really any bad thing except for the awkwardness. I’m new to this school and I don’t really talk to others except for my close friends, so in this group I don’t really talk to the people in this group so it’s a bit awkward to communicate with them, but I guess having a group with people I don’t really talk to as often is a good change. Overall, I like the group just hope that I get more comfortable communicating with my group more.

Magnetism. We all know that opposites attract, so in other words the north and south pulls together and if you put both north together then they pull away from each other. So in that picture the ball is floating because opposites attract but in this case it’s repelling. That means it’s either north to north or south to south, so it’s not opposite it’s the same ends.

Today I think my group discussion went great. I could probably consider it fun actually. We went deep but not so deep we made many connections to our book it went from droughts, to the apocalypse, to Mosquitos, to China. It was relatively focused on this book. Everyone had different opinions and we all collaborate well together. One thing the only thing really was people talked at the same time a lot it is one of my pet peeves sometimes I couldn’t hear a thing. I honestly wish that we had a talking stick for the first time ever. I think the purpose of a book club is to ask questions, answer, infer, and build your knowledge.
