ESTIMATING AND ADDING FRACTION STRIPS

EXPLAIN YOUR LEARNING

Today, students learned how to estimate and add fractions using fraction strips and benchmarks. Many students can easily add fractions with like and unlike denominators, but the majority of the students really struggled with the concept of estimating with benchmarks and not calculating the actual answer. We will continue working on this tomorrow. Be sure to use the digital fraction strip sites I listed in the Math section to help you visualize when you are doing your work tonight.

1.) MATH:

Complete questions #1-6 on pg. 54 and 55 if you didn't finish it in class today.
Use this website and this one to help you visualize fraction strips. It allows you to compare digital fraction strips very easily. It will help you with your homework.
Remember, you must draw the fraction strips to show your work.

Step 1- Find out the numbers you are going to estimate.

Step 2- Add the numbers. For example, if you have 1/3 and 1/4 put your 1/3 fraction strip down and then find your 1/4 fraction strip and put that beside the 1/3.

Step 3- Put the fractions strips beside your 1/2 or 1 fraction strip and use those as Benchmarks.

Step 4- Now see if you number is over 1/2 or below half.

1) Read the question carefully (I learned this the hard way), and then look at the two fractions that you will compare.

2) Take out the two corresponding fraction strips, and lay them out next to each other.

3) (I'm going to use some examples) If you have the fractions 1/2, and 2/3, you want to lay the fraction strip that's split into thirds out, and use the fraction strip that's split into halves to block off 1/3 of the fraction strip that's split into thirds.

4) now you can see where 1/2+2/3 would go, if you simply put it next to a number line, with benchmarks.

I guess I don't know how to explain it REALLY clearly, but I hope whoever reads this understands what I mean.

@ Andrew - I'm sorry, but you're not done yet. If I was a grade 7 student and I read your response, I wouldn't know what to do. Please edit and revise. Read Sofia and Issac's responses. They are good examples.

To add fractions using the fraction strips, I count out the fraction on one strip (eg.3/4) and put the other fraction strip over top at the line (between 3/4 and 4/4, in this case). Then I count out the fraction on the other side, or just see it, as the case may be, and then the combined fraction strips, to the line on the second one where the needed fraction ends, is the answer.

1) look at your question and see which two number you have to estimate

2)for example if you have two number ,which is 1/4,1/3 what you are going to do is to take out the fraction strip of 1/4and 1/3 and also 1/2

3)and you out 1/4in the top and put 1/3 beside 1/4,so now you should only see a 1/4 and and there should be three 1/3 ,but you are only focus in 1/4 and one 1/3

4)Then you can put strip of 1/2 below 1/4,1/3

5)After that you should know that,they are more than a half ,and this is how you do it

1. READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY.

2. Take out the strips you need (eg. If its 1/5 and 1/6, take those strips out.) and a benchmark strip. For example, I like to use the halfway benchmark, so I would take out the 1/2 strip.

3. If the question is asking you to estimate 1/5+1/6, cover 4/5 of the 5/5 strip with the 1/6. (Sorry if my explaining is bad XD)

4. Take your benchmark strip and place it and the bottom (or anywhere you want) of the compared strips and see if it is more than the halfway mark or if it's smaller.

5. And... You are done! Good job! XD

1. Read the question
2. Take out the strips that have the denominator(s) of the fraction(s).
3. Take the first fraction look where it is on the strip. Look at the other one too.
4. Stack the one of the fraction strips on top of the line where you found where the fraction was. Make sure the edge of the other fraction meets with the edge of the fraction.
5. Get a benchmark strip like 1/2 or 1/4
6. Compare it and see where it is about or which one it is close to.

Today,we learned fraction strips from Mr.Hong.It is pretty easy.First you find the strips you need.eg:1/6and 3/9You lay one of them o top of the other ones leftover strips and then compare them with other fraction strips to estimate it.

1.) Read question carefully before taking out fraction strips
2.) Take out fraction strips and benchmark, I use one whole mostly
3.) Place fractions ships beside or on top of each other
4.) Compare the fractions to see where about the sum of the fractions are compared to your benchmark
5.) Um write down your answer? E.g: The sum of the fractions is past a little over a whole, which is the benchmark.

1. Read the question as carefully as possible (you don’t want to make careless mistakes now do you?).
2. You have to find the correct fraction strips. For example 1/3 and 1/8.
3. Now put the 1/3 fraction strip down beside the 1/8 fraction strip. (this is an example)
4. Use the 1/2 fraction strips as a benchmark to see approximately where the sum of the two fractions would be on a number line.

1. Look at the two fractions you're comparing. Look at the denominators and get that fraction strip.
2. Use a benchmark such as 1/4,1/2,3/4 etc.
3. Add the fractions and loo at your benchmark.
4. That's your answer for comparing.

Fraction strips is an easy, yet spimple way to find an fraction or camparing fraaction is an benchmark. Sorry that I couldn't do that to much, I have an massive headake.

For example you can compare 1/2 and 1/3 and see wich one crater using the upper benchmark of the supposed fraction strip. This easily alows you to visulize which fraction is larger than another and help simplify it. It can also be used towards the addition of fractions.

1. Read the question
2. Separate the fraction strips you need, and don't need for the question.
3. Pick a fraction strip to use as a benchmark (I usually use 1, or 1/2)
4. Take your first fraction strip, for example the one divided into 4ths, and lay the second fraction strip over, for example, this one can be the one divided into 6ths.
5. Let's say that the equation is 2/4 + 2/6, you would lay the 6ths fraction strip over half of the 4ths strip, and to make things easier for yourself fold the 6ths strip after 2 sections.
6. Then take your benchmark of choice and figure out what your sum is close to.

1.read the questions carefully, understand what the question want you to do.
2.take the fraction strips that have the same denominators as the strips you need
3.put the first strip on the table (or wherever you put it) then place the other fraction srip on top of the frist but only covering the part you dont need for your question. For example, 3/4+1/6. You take the 3 and 6 strips out and place the 6fraction strip on top of the place where it marked 3/4
4.take 2fraction strip out so you can answer your question. Place the 2fraction below the 3/4and 1/6fraction strip. See your answer using the benchmark.

1.) Read the question and make sure you know what the question is asking you to do
2.) Look at the fraction you are comparing Example: 2/5 and 4/8 Get the fraction strips. In this case you’ll need the fifth and the eighth fraction strips. Then put it on top of each other.
3.) Choose the benchmark you are going to use Example: 1, 1/2 Then put it underneath the fractions you put together
4.) See if the fraction are greater or less than 1/2 or 1

1) look at your questions very WARILY
2) put the fraction strips together. for example, if the question is asking for 1/4 & 9/10, then take out the 4 & 10 fraction strips.
3) take out your benchmark which could be anything of your choice.
4) now estimate where the number is about. for example, the answer passed 1 so it is between 1 & 1 1/2.

1. line up the strips to see if it's lower or higher then the halfway benchmark
2. get the strips that you need for the question then put one down and put another on top but only where it should be
3. put strips to see if one would line up exactly then write the number that lined up exactly for the question but show your work

1.) Read the question carefully, so you know what to do. (3/4 & 2/6)
2.) Take out the appropriate fractions strips for the question.
3.) Take the first fraction strip which is split into fourths and lay it down
then take the second fraction which is split into sixths and lay that over the last quarter of the strip
4.) Choose a benchmark to use. For example, 1/2 or 1 whole.
5.) After you're done deciding, see where it ends up. Either closer to 1/2, 1 whole, or even above 1 whole so then you use the 1/2 to make a mixed fraction. So then you'd have to see If it's between 1 or 1 1/2

INTRO: I learned how to estimate fractions in class today and I am going share it.
1.) First pull out your fraction strips
2.) If you are comparing fractions like 1/3 and ¼ compare them to a bench mark like
1 whole or one half and you overlap the ¼ on the 1/3.
3.) Then you can see the outcome is closer to 1 or 1/2.
4.) If the number is bigger than one whole it will become a mixed number.
That is how you estimate fractions in my words.
