Alphabet Photography

I hope you have all been enjoying the Family Day weekend! It is a wonderful opportunity to spend more time with your families. I hope you had a chance to enjoy the company of your loved ones.

This week, both classes (Div 1 and 2) will have an assessment on 'THE NOVEL APPROACH'. You will be reading a piece of text and proving that you know what each of the reading strategies is and how each of them helps you deepen your comprehension.

1.) MATH:

Rate, ratio, and percent assessment on Friday, February 16th.

2.) LA:

Reading strategy assessment on Thursday, February 15th.

3.) DIGITAL PHOTOGAPHY:

Continue practice taking and collecting photos for your Alphabet Photography assignment at home.
Be sure to save them all in your ABC PHOTO folder in your Google Drive.
This weekend, try to go for a nature walk with your parents and show them some of the skills you have been learning.
Remember, you composition skills and photo taking skills should be clear in all your photos. (rule of thirds, filling the frame, bird's eye view, worm's eye view, leading lines (Perspective), etc.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Division 1 and 2 have both been learning how to use reading strategies while they read.
This post a response is for Div 1 and Div 2 students.
Tell me 2 reading strategies you feel help you most when you read. Use proper paragraph structure.
In addition to explaining what the strategies are, explain how you use these strategies.
For example: Do you ever read something and then ask yourself, "What did I just read?" Well, if that sounds familiar, then monitoring comprehension is a strategy that you would find useful. When I come across something I don't understand, I do several things to help me 'monitor my comprehension'. To help myself understand something better, I sometimes ask my teacher, friends, re-read, stop to think, look something up in the dictionary, and I also do research online.
Edit/revise based on the givens (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, capitals, etc)

5.) POST A RESPONSE 2: (OPTIONAL)

Use this as an opportunity to get creative.
Rewrite a well-known story to reflect the day and age we are living in.
Remember, look in your hands! Why? Because that is where your creativity is! ;-)

Reading's fun, but sometimes when I read I don't really know what I'm reading. Am I reading too fast? Did I skip something? Usually I use a reading strategy called monitoring comprehension to solve my lack of reading. If I read too fast and not read the actual words and just skim through the pages there's no use of having the book out. I use the strategy by slowing down when reading, reread the passage or stop and think about the part I can't really get. Second strategy I like to use is visualizing. It goes for the same thing, if I don't understand something, I just try to visualize it so you can see what's happening. You'll get better look and understanding of it. Thinking about something is pretty simple so the visualizing strategy isn't that hard.

Reading strategies. Why on earth would you need strategies for reading? Reading is so easy and simple. But sometimes I don't actually know what I have read. So maybe monitoring comprehension is helpful for me because my vocabulary is terrible and I have a hard time understanding chapter books and stuff like that. Hmm, what is another strategy I find helpful? I think I forgot all the other strategies so ummm... Can someone tell me all the reading strategies there are? Thanks!

When I read,the 2 most important reading strategies to me are connecting and visualizing. So,I think that if I just read and have no connection it is boring,but if I can relate to reading,it is more interesting. Visulizing is important because when I read,I lkike seeing things in mt head

Reading a book wouldn't be easy without the reading strategies. What are the most useful reading strategies for me?
Well, the first one would be monitoring comprehensions. How? Well, sometimes when I read I tend to speed or I have a very small vocabulary. I can reread a sentence or a paragraph or even an entire page so I can get an idea of what the word means. For example if the word is 'dog', and you don't know what dog means, you can reread the sentence and get an idea of what 'dog' means. Eg: 'Once I came home from school, I immediately saw my dog waiting so patiently for me to feed him. I patted his furry back as I poured his food in his bowl.'
The second strategy I use is visualizing. Visualizing helps me get an image of what is currently happening in the book. If the book describes someone's looks, you can visualize what he/she looks like.
Reading strategies really help you understand a book better. They really help make reading easier for you.

If you've ever come across a paragraph with what seem like a MILLION descriptive words and read through it, you probably re-read it because you didn't understand it the first time. I know I've done this before, and when I re-read a paragraph, or even read it through the first time, I visualize what I'm reading. I guess this is a combination of 2 reading strategies, but I mostly count this as visualization. When I'm reading, I try to picture the scene in my head, adding details to the picture as I go along. This helps me get a good idea of what is happening in the story.

"Hey, that reminds me..." I often connect to the text that I read. I find that when I can relate to a character's life or experiences, it helps deepen my understanding because maybe I've felt the same way before. When I connect, I usually make text-to-text connections (because I've read way too many books for my own good) and text-to-self connections. Connecting helps me understand a character/story better, and it's always fun to look back on things that you have done.

I love to read, but when it comes to being able to understand exactly what the author of the book's trying to say, that can be a challenge. Sometimes, you just simply don't know why you don't understand the most simplistic words, put together into the most complicated sentence. Reading strategies definitely help me when I read. The two strategies that I use the most are monitoring comprehension, and visualization. Monitoring comprehension helps me a lot when I don't understand a word, or phrase. I can monitor what I understand, and I will know if I should ask for help understanding something. Visualization helps a lot, because I can read the text around the sentence/word that I don't understand, and be able to picture a scene. Then, I would just apply what would be the most logical meaning of that sentence/word. These two reading strategies will help you understand so much more, and really get to what the author's trying to say!

Have you ever read a book and thought, “Why did the author write this book? What can we learn from it?” I do. When I read, I use one of the reading strategies “determining what’s important” very often. To determine what’s important, I look for the events in the book that are essential to the plot and would totally change the storyline if they were taken out. By identifying what’s important, I can get a good sense of what the author is trying to convey through the book. Another one of the strategies that I use a lot is monitoring comprehension. Monitoring comprehension is when I go back and reread what I don’t understand, ask someone about the book, look up something in a dictionary, or think about what I just read. Monitoring comprehension is very useful because sometimes I forget what I just read or I don’t really understand something in the book, and then I use this to help me understand what I’m reading. There are also some other reading strategies like setting a purpose, accessing background knowledge and making connections, visualizing, and making inferences which we can use to enhance our reading comprehension skills. Overall, I think that these reading strategies are very beneficial and that we should use them to help us understand the deeper meaning of the book and learn more.

Reading is fun but sometimes there’s parts of reading structures that your missing while you read that might be helpful to you and you might just enjoy the book better if so.

My first reading strategy that I thunk is the most helpful to me while I read is to use my background knowledge to make connections. These connections might remind me or might begin to think of when you where in that certain situation, place...(example) The other reading strategy that I use is visualization because when you do this it helps me a lot with phrasing in the story and helps me make connections.

Reading strategies. What are they? You're probably using them on a daily basis but never gave it a name or named it as to our brains, it's common sense. A few of the big ones that we use is ":Monitoring comprehension." As when we are reading something like a chapter book and we don't understand a part, we usually re-read it to understand it. Another main one we use is "Setting a Purpose." As everything we do has a purpose. From things like for fun to because of school. Everything can be a purpose.Now i listed 2 purposes, can you list more?

Reading is the key to learning a language. There's some strategies I usually use when i'm reading. First, visualizing is one of my favourite and the most helpful strategy I've used. I often write down my thinking and that definitely helped me to organize and visualize my thoughts. Second, writing down the purposes. This helped me to understand what i'm doing and why I'm doing this while I'm reading. For example, like get a feel, make connections, they help me remember what I'm doing and what I'm suppose to do .

My favorite reading strategy is "to get a feel" because you can feel the feelings of the writters details. "For information" is my favorite because you can read for info to add to your background knowlage and to understand what happened or what it was like back then

I'm not a big fan of reading, and I don't read as much as I should. When I do read there's a couple of skills I like to use. One strategy that I like to use is determining what's important. This can help me take out what's the most important out of the story. This can also help me find the big idea. My second strategy is making connections. I have no idea if it's even a strategy or not but I use it. Connections can help me to understand the book on a more personal level. Believe it or not, it also kinda helps me get deeper into the book. Sooo yea.. those are some strategies that I like to use when I read (which is not too much).

I'm starting to like reading more and more when it gets to the interesting parts. But sometimes, I don't understand the story.. So what should I do??? Well I will be telling you 2 ways I do to understand the context better. Sometimes I read the sentences way to fast which means I don't understand the story and what it's trying to say. so I would reread which helps a lot. Also sometimes I could monitor my comprehension meaning if I don't understand something I can ask my peers.

Reading is amazing, I've read lots of books and most of them aren't the really popular or well-known ones, so it seems like I've haven't read a lot of books. :(

I read a lot of teen books- which are usually read by kids older than us - so the plots and usage of words and sentences are harder to comprehend. I usually use monitor my comprehension to get what's going on in the story so I can keep enjoying my book and relate to real life and use my background knowledge to make to book more interesting.

When I was younger, what entertained me the most was probably just games and youtube videos. However, today, I take reading as an entertainment, too. When read, I often become off task, so some times, I re-read. I would go back and read to parts that I wasn't paying attention to. It is also important for me to search words up online. When I read, I come over words or phrases that I don't understand which will interupt me from understanding the story. So When this happens, I will search the word up online. I believe there are more good reading strategies for me so hope in the future I can find more.

Reading, you may know that we all learned that in kindergarten and now you find the task quite simple to do. This usually happens to me which I find that I don' understand stand a word or a phrase, so the strategy that comes useful for this is montering comprehension. Another strategy I like to use is visualization. Why? Well I like to picture what the author was thinking we'll he or she wrote it and also I would picture what the character(s) or scence were about.

So whenever I read a book I always at one point get stuck. We've all been there. You start reading and you stop for a sec. Then you realize that you have no idea what you have read. Well that's a job for our handy dandy reading strategies. In this paragraph, I will be talking about how two of the reading strategies help me the most when reading. ( Remember, it's my opinion.)
1) Visualizing
Since I like to draw, when I'm reading I usually visualize the story in my mind. This allows me to get a better understanding of the place around the book. Specially when it is a chapter book.
2) Monitoring comprehension
Like I said in the beginning, at one point I get stuck in a book. That's how monitoring comprehension plays in. Specifically the re-reading strategy. Re-reading makes me understand the context of the sentence and prevents me from reading too fast.
Overall, I think all of the reading strategies are good. But these stick out from the rest for me.

At school , we will sometimes have the visible thinking activity. I think it actually helps me improve my english and it helps me to extend my background knowledge. However, when I was doing it, I often got some problems, and I will always use the reading strategy and helped me , I think there are two strategies that helped me the most , let me tell you now. Firstly, I think helped me the most is monitoring comprehension, why is it helping me a lot . It helped me because I often read a poem , and I will always feel confused cause after I read it , I have no idea of what is the poem about , and I always got stuck in there. I will always slow down , and after a read a sentence, I will ask myself do I know what it means then I will move on. Also I sometimes will only know half of the poem. So , I will reread the part that I don't really understand and it will help me to know the poem more. Secondly, I think accessing background knowledge and making connections helped me a lot too! It means that I can use my background knowledge and think of the experience that I have and add in to the story or poem. For example , if there was a book and it is about there were a quarrel between a girl and her mum. If I just read it , I might not know what the girl feeling and I will feel like that was not something that really bad , but if I make connections, which means that I also have a experience like that , and I think I will know what the girl was feeling and I always think that it helps me focus more. I think reading strategies helped me a lot when I am reading , so I will always use them , and extend my background knowledge.

I’m not exactly a fan of reading, but there are certain genres (online books from Wattpad) that I get hooked to. For example; romance, comedy, mystery and fantasy books. What’s sad about reading is that you sometimes struggle with certain things. Which is why I’m thankful that Mr. Hong taught us about the reading strategies. I like picturing what the book (or a person) is talking about. That is called visualizing. I use this strategy almost every time I read a book. It helps me think about the situation the character is in and how everything looks. Do you ever have those situations where you read something but then don’t know what the author is talking about, and you reread to understand it better? Yea, that’s basically monitoring comprehension. Monitoring comprehension is another strategy I use a lot. It’s for whenever I get stuck on something or when I have no idea what’s going on.
Now that I think about it, I should go reread that one book! It was just so good! How the main character- *blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah*.

Reading can be fun and stuff, but if you don’t understand what you are reading then it’s not as fun as if you were to actually understand the text. When I read I usually just read and half of the time I don’t even understand what I read. So, when I learned the strategies I actually understand the piece of writing I’m reading. I think deeper into the story and find the big idea. The two strategies that help me most are first, making connections. When I make connections I feel like I can relate to what’s happening and understanding how that person feels because something similar to what happen in the story happened to me or someone I know. Second, monitor comprehension. This strategy helps me because like I said in the beginning when I read half of the time I usually don’t really understand what I just read, so when I re-read few times I actually understand the text. Re-reading helps me from reading to fast because when reading fast you sometimes skip some stuff and maybe skipping the important part of the book. Overall, I think the reading strategies are good and helpful in some ways.

I FORGOT TO DO THE PAR! I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NOW!
Now I'm rushing it and I do not understand what the *beep* (Certain keyboard issue and error) to do!!! So this is when the reading strategies come to rescue! The one that will be helping me today will be Monitoring Comprehension. Monitoring comprehension can help me because I am not understanding what the oihdfpksh (my dog stepped on the keyboard [I do not have a dog]) I am suppose to do for my PAR. To help me with it, I will try to reread the criteria, ask for feedback and look at what other people are posting. Also it may be helpful if you are doing your PAR and it somehow seems that you cannot type certain words...

In this situation, I could also use Settting a purpose. I think it is helpful when doing your PAR because you may be confused when you are reading the criteria or reading other people if you don't set a purpose and know what you should think about when you are reading it.

Overall, I think the reading strategy could be helpful everywhere in our daily lifes and we should start using it more.

I'm not a fan, nor a good reader but I still know some reading strategies. Readings strategies may seem pointless, but I actually use them to sharpen my learning. For example, I like to re-read.

Re-reading helps me sharpen my understanding of a phrase. Sometimes I like to rush what I read, so I read it again so I can make sure I understand the story.

I also like to set a purpose when I read. It helps keep me more organized for what I'm doing so I don't wander around and do everything randomly. Setting a purpose is very easy, just write what you're doing and you're done!

Overall, reading strategies seem pointless at first, but get better the more you know about them.

What are read8ng strategies? You may have heard of the word but didn't know what it meant. The funny thing is that you use it every time you read with out knowing it. Its also good to notice when your using them like monitoring your comprehension. One of the reading strategies I think is very important to remember is using your background knowledge to remember main parts in the story. The second one is visualizing the scene to get a better understanding. These are the main strategies I think very important when your reading.

2 ways that helped me read are rereading because if I pass an important part then that would be bad but when I reread I will go back to that part. The second way that helped me read is using my background knowledge because background knowledge helps you understand and without background knowledge you would not really understand so the thing your reading will be boring to you. Those are the 2 ways that help me understand and read a book or other things with words.
