Negative effects of Vaping

Today, students had a very informative discussion on vaping. They used their background knowledge to write out their 'VISIBLE THINKING' on their handouts. Following their use of the reading strategies, they checked their comprehension of the reading material by answering some questions. We will follow up on how they did this coming Monday.

IMPORTANT:
1.) FIELD TRIP TOMORROW - Bring money for lunch, compass card, and/or bus fare.
2.) TILE ART - Bring $4 for supplies.
3.) COLOURED TILE - Make sure you have coloured tiles ready to use on Monday.

Complete visible thinking (Vaping article)
Complete questions 1-8 on page 3.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about the negative effects of vaping.
Based on your background knowledge, write a letter to someone you know (a family member) on why you think they should stop smoking/vaping.
This will give you practice appealing to 'EMOTIONS'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Uses a standard letter format. Click here to see the format. keep in mind it doesn't have to be very long, but try to stick to this structure/format.
2.) Pay attention to the givens (capitals, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc)
3.) Give one student feedback based on the standard format and the givens.
4.) Edit/revise based on the feedback or a self-assessment.

Dear Uncle Patrick,

Have you been smoking recently? How do you feel? I am writing to you on behalf of your health. I hope that when you finish reading this letter, you will stop smoking, or at least try to stop smoking.

Smoking is very bad for your health. It will give you many types of diseases, and cancer. Many people have already died from smoking for a long time. For the past year, your habit is slowly increasing by one cigarette a month Now you are up to 29 cigarettes a month.

I do not want to lose my uncle who has been very kind to me over the past 12 years. You have been caring for me when my parensusts were elsewhere. The only downside was you smoking. I know that you do not realize that it was harming you and I. Now I tell you to quit the habit of smoking. There are many reasons you should stop smoking as soon as possible.

First, smoking can give you lung cancer which is very fatal. It can kill a person if the person does not stop smoking, or does not say anything about their pain. Secondly, your body does not like anything foreign in the system. The reason is anything foreign in your body can give you a huge amount of pain, and/or death. Therefore, you should stop smoking right now. I am saying this because I do not want you to suffer a very painful death.

Hi grandpa,

How are you? I'm writing to you about you bad smoking habits. I know you've been trying to quit for a while know and I know that's very hard for you. I don't wanna put you in any pressure to quit smoking overnight so, i'll just tell you a little bit about why you would stop smoking. First of all cigarettes contain a bunch of toxic chemicals for example tar, whenever you smoke the tar from the cigarette will stay in your throat and your lungs will go black over time. I don't wanna lose an amazing person who has been in my life for so long. Dear 13th Cousin Twice Removed,

Today I learned about the effects of vaping and smoking on your health. In short, I think you should stop now! The negative effects can even be life threatening.

Here is some information I would like to share with you. Did you know that 1604 related illness and 34 deaths have occured in the US. At the beginning people did think that it might be a good alternative to smoking cigarettes but there are still significant health concerns. One of the negative impacts it has is that is coats your lungs which inhibits them from being able to circulate oxygen through your body. So far they have found negatives symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and cough, but there will be even more as time goes on.

I know that you are under a lot of stress lately which has led you to vaping but there are other ways that can help reduce your stress. Try yoga!

Hi it's me Ty! I am writing this letter to tell you smoking is bad for you. You should stop smoking because it's bad for your lungs. Many people have died because of smoking.

Hi uncle how are you? Hopefully you are well. Today I want to talk about something serious. I want to talk about smoking. Please read to the end, because this is very important.

As I said earlier I want to talk about smoking. More specifically I want you to try to quit smoking. Smoking can be hazardous to your heath, Many people, every single day smoke. You can see all the cigarette buds on the ground. Making the city dirtier. Some people even die from smoking. This is why I want you to stop smoking because it can seriously damage your lungs. Which causes shortness of breath and chest pain. I really don't want that to happen to you! Plus cigarettes have very dangerous chemicals that can get into your lungs, making you really sick. Please I don't want to lose somebody like you. You made me laugh when I'm feeling down. You are a kind and generous uncle. I hope this this letter helped you understand the cons of smoking.

But don't pressure your self to much, because I know that smoking is a hard habit to quit. We will take the necessary steps to break the habit with as much time you need. Quitting will take a while but were in this together no matter what.

Dear mom,

Mom, I know that you don’t smoke anymore which is good, but I’m going to tell you why you should never smoke or vape again. WARNING: some information might frighten you but please don’t be anxious because as long as you don’t smoke or vape, you’re going to be fine.

Everybody knows that smoking is bad for you because there’s drugs in there that can really harm you, like tobacco, cannabis, and nicotine. These things together plus some more harmful chemicals are combined to create cigarettes. That’s really bad for your health and many people died from it. Another reason is that you are spending money to buy something that might kill you.

Some people might think that vaping is fine since it doesn’t contain tobacco and cannabis, but I think otherwise. Vapour not containing tobacco and cannabis only means that it’s better than smoking which is still not safe and healthy because it still contains nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Plus that vaping caused 34 deaths.

This is reasons not to smoke/vape ever and I hope you stay safe!

Nicotine: A thing that can cause addiction and affect development in the brain for youth, like memory and concentration.

Cannabis: a plant that can cause paranoia, delusions, hallucinations

Hey dad,
i am writing this letter to try to convince you to quit smoking. I know that you know how dangerous smoking is but heres some facts. Smoking (as well as vaping) is extremely hazardous for health. It also causes trash and gives other people lung cancer. In the US alone 480k die from smoking and 41k from second hand smoke. for comparison 11k people died from firearm related homicides in 2016. its pretty bad really. smokers also tend to live 10 years less.

i know quitting is hard but there are products available to help you quit. Just quitting cold turkey will most likely be impossible. Quitting though will most likely lenghten your life span and contribute to the lessening of cigarette production which is pretty environmentaly unfriendly. Also there is aparently trace amounts of plutonium and smokers are exposed to more radiation on average than even nuclear workers.

Dear Uncle,

Hello! Today I am going to talk to you about some very important things that may happen to you if you don't quit smoking. Smoking and vaping is very dangerous for our lungs and our health. Already smoking for only one month can cause your lungs to turn black which is really disgusting as today at school we watched a testing video about what the cigarettes did to the puff balls. Vape has nicotine in it, which is really addicting and can cause serious damage to youth's brains. Smoking and vaping can cause death which is actually very scary. I think that smoking and vaping should be illegal because there is nothing good about it which really makes me wonder. It has caused so many people to die and new stores for it just keep starting to open up.

I am trying to convince you to stop smoking because I am very against it and I want you to stay safe. It is very bad for the environment as well. Anyways, that is all I have to say about what smoking and vaping could really do to you.

I don't have anybody in my family that smokes in reality. ;)

Please stop smoking. My siblings and I have told you this many times before, but you always brush it off and don't take it seriously. Today in school, we learned about smoking and vaping, and as you know, it's very bad for your body. Putting something that doesn't belong inside your body, and know that it's bad, is instantly asking for lung cancer. Multiple videos online show what it's like, and you should see them.

I know that it's very hard to quit smoking, but I hope this shows that I care about you. You start from baby steps, from one day, to three days, to a week, and so on. You can also ask for help from everyone around you, like grandma and auntie. Thank you for reading this letter, I hope you will succeed!

Did you know that Smoking makes the risk of a heart attack 200% to 400% greater than that of nonsmokers? This means that it’s really common for smokers to have a heart attack. 8.6 million people in the U.S. live with a serious illness caused by smoking. Smoking really has no benefits, and I know that it can be hard to quit. But, the other day, I saw an article about people quitting cigarettes. They said that it wasn’t an overnight thing. It was something you had to slowly work at.

Uncle Jeff you should try to stop your addiction to smoking it will cause your lung lots of damages and you could be getting cancer or many other things and we don't want you to have that. The video shows what will happen after a month and if you smoke for years it will be way worse than the cotton balls in the video. You shouldn't be putting anything that's not supposed to be in your lung and you should breathe in clean air instead of smoking or vaping.

I hope that after reading this you'll try not to smoke anymore as it will do lot's of damages to your lungs.

I hope you’re doing well. How’s life like in New York? It’s a big city, and with a big city, there are smokers. And with smoking, there’s smoking related deaths.

You probably know smoking is a very hazardous to your health, yet you still do it anyways. It makes me very concerned for your health and every time I see you smoke, I wish that you wouldn’t. Your chances of lung cancer are off the roof. You’re basically slowly killing yourselves. Please, make your best effort, to stop.

It may seem useless to stop now, after all these years. You’re probably already heavily affected. While that may be true, you can at least put an effort to stop, or even reduce the amount of cigarettes you smoke in a day, or say, a month.

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you understand the full danger of smoking, vaping, etc.

We arent the closest of friends but it does not mean that I dont care about you. I know you used to vape I'm not sure if you still do but I know one thing for sure, you did alot of damage to yourself. You used to be a very good athlete but then when you started vaping you tood me you coulding continue basketball because the vape had left a negitive affect on you and you couldn't play for this year. I hope that you stopped realizing that what your doing is making you weaker. Vaping can have serious effects on you, it has killed tons of people and has brought hundreds to suffer, I hope that's enough to make you quit and If not i wanna tell you that vaping is stereotype as cool alot of the times but killing yourself and ruining your body isnt cool.

Dear Dad,
Dad you’ve been smoking for a while now and it hurts me that you would even do it, you don’t have to stop, your life, your decisions, but I just want to warn you of all the negative impacts are of smoking.
First Nicotine, a chemical in cigarettes can be bad for you and also highly addictive, one puff into a cigarette and your addicted.
Two, your health will be in grave danger and you will be at risk of cancer and other diseases. I’ll go through so much pain if you pass away, what will I do without you?
Three, tar that black icky stuff will stay in your lungs and blacken the inside of your lungs, do you want your lungs to be a filthy, blackened, waste?

Dear Uncle Sam,

I am writing to you about the recent enquiry on vaping's impacts on the human body, even though vapes don't contain recreational cannabis or tobacco that is generally found in conventional cigarettes.

The risks to smoking are still not entirely discovered and understood, yet. From what I read in the online article about health hazards caused by smoking or vaping, these can include life long disabilities such as lung cancer, pnemonia, etc. After some time of vaping and smoking life can turn on you, symptoms involve shortness of breath, can't think straight, etc. I hope you are feeling well, really I just wrote this to you because I was worried if anyone was trying to talk you in to vaping, I will state this again, Vaping is no safer than smoking.
