Today, we spent time listening to students present their 'Black History' projects. Students took on the roles of the significant characters they researched. They presented from a first-person point of view and at times, it felt as though your characters were right in front of me! Well done! We are looking forward to hearing the remainder of the presentations tomorrow! We also made progress on our maps of the underground railroad to connect with our current read aloud book, 'The Freedom Train'.

IMPORTANT: Make sure when you order your hot lunch, you do not buy lunch on March 30th as we will be skiing that day.

Do you know the famous former slave, Harriet Tubman (AKA Minty)? Do you know that she changed the direction of slavery almost by herself? You don’t know about her? Well this is my time to educate you about her. Harriet Tubman was formerly a slave and was called “Minty”, but when she ran away in a daring adventure to the free North, and changed her name into, as we know her today, Harriet Tubman, so she could rescue more people.

The story of the great hero Harriet Tubman began when she was still being called Minty and was still a slave (Before Harriet was free, she was called Minty). When I was young, her father couldn’t see her a lot because he had to work for hours chopping logs for his slave master. That left my mother taking care of me and 8 other siblings. What a life! Later on in life, I was old enough to work. I was only eight when the slave master’s wife taught me how to weave, but the thread made me sneeze and therefore ruin the weaving process. One day, the mistress (slave master’s wife) was tired of watching me fail over and over, so she sent me to her husband to deal with me. Now, the slave master sent me into the swamp with only a rag for clothes to check the traps for muskrats (Muskrat fur was very valuable during that time). It was freezing and disgusting. Each day I keep returning home without a single Muskrat because I keep letting them go. And each day the slave master keeps sending me back to recheck the traps until one day when I got sick with measles. The slave master agreed to let me go to my mother until I was healthy enough to work again. My mother nursed me back to the point where I could walk but not work, so my mother asked me if I wanted to go shopping with her. Of course I said “Yes!”. When I was shopping with my mother, my mother told me to wait outside while she went inside to get something. While I was waiting, a fleeing slave ran by followed by the slave’s master. The master told me to block the running slave, but Minty was still weak and disoriented, so I just said “Huh?”. Then, out of desperation, the master threw a solid lead capsule at the running slave, but it missed and hit me square in the forehead. I collapsed into a heap. Shortly after, I found myself in the slave masters barn with a semi-doctor. With luck, the chunk of lead came out of the forehead, and that’s where the visions began.

One day while I was working in the forest chopping wood, suddenly I fell asleep. This may sound weird, but ever since I got hit with the lead piece, my brain was badly damaged. Soon, I was having regular fitting sleeps during random intervals. My family realized this, but it didn’t make too much of a difference because I was the most efficient wood chopper because of my extra “naps”. Then one day, Eros (Cupid) struck. When I was pulling a giant pile of wood across the beach, a free man saw me and thought he loved me. He talked to my father, so he could get permission to marry me. After he got permission, he went to help me pull the giant load of wood. Side by side we pulled. Soon, we got married, but little does he know, I am going to run away. A couple of days passed. My master was becoming more and more cruel. Soon, he was talking about selling me to the deep south cotton mills, and I was suffering from my head injury. Later, when I went to sleep I dreamed of flying over the lands all the way to the free North, but there was one obstacle, a giant wall with white women reaching out for me. I thought this was an invitation from God (Minty was very religious). After a few days passed, I decided to run away with two of my brothers, but during the run I fell asleep while guiding my brothers. They freaked out and brought me back home. Luckily no paddy rollers (slave catchers) caught us. My mom saw me and exploded. She was super mad that I tried to run away. But tomorrow, in the middle of the night, I took a quilt and set off alone. I reached a safe house and gave the owner the quilt. In return, she gave me directions to the next safe house. I travelled to a safe house by safe house at night. In the daylight when paddy rollers were patrolling, I hid in the forest and slept. Finally, I arrived in Philadelphia. There, I worked at a hotel folding beds and tending the laundry. I made two friends which never abandoned me when I told them about my weird sleeping habits. During my stay in Philadelphia, I changed my name to the name we all know today, Harriet Tubman. I saved as much money as possible and saved up to save my family.

One by one I saved all my siblings and guided them along. After all my siblings were saved, I prepared to rescue my parents. My parents were well in their senior years. This is going to be a challenge. Luckily, I used a carriage to carry my mother and father across the border. We made it to my home. All my family members are safe. Now, it’s time for some adventures.

Have you ever heard of Harriet Tubman? Also know as MINTY. Well hers is her story.

When she was born her sisters got taken away, Then she was SOLD to a overseer, as she was working the overseer threw a huge weight at a running slave fugitive. But he missed and hit Harriet Tubman (Minty) in the head. She started getting sleeping spell right now know as Eclipsey. The overseer tried to sell her to other people but nobody wanted a slave that had sleeping spells. Then she was sent to work with her father cutting trees. She got stronger overtime. Also overtime her overseer died and his wife wanted to sell her and her family. Harriet Tubman got scared that she would be sold to people and away from those she loved. So she used all she knew about the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD to escape. She became a conductor and never drove the train off tracks and never lost a passenger. She also traveled back to save her family and a bunch of other people 13 times. She was known as the BLACK MOSES. And the bounties started growing for her and the black slave fugitives. She was the first black women to lead a military raid to save more black fugitive slaves. She also got women the right to vote.

I think the BIG IDEA of the story is how important this mistake of slavery was and how we shouldn’t repeat this mistake in the future.

This video was about Harriet Tubman or Minty. In the video she is courage's and preservers through every situation she is in.

I think the big idea of the story is to help people no matter what. Harriet was born as a slave and worked and worked on a plantation, however one day when a fugitive was trying to escape the, 'master,' threw a 2 pound weight that missed and hit Harriet. Not only did it permanently cause brain damage but it also caused her narcolepsy or sleeping spells that would cause her to just pass out for no reason. The master attempted to sell her but because of her injuries no one would buy her. So she went to work with her father, Ben Ross and ended up lumbering a lot which increased her physical strength by a mile. This put her in touch with black sailors which in turn she learned of the secret communication that occur along trade routs. After getting married her owner died on 1849 and the widow planned to sell her enslaved human beings. Despite all this she had heard of a underground railroad, she fled with 2 of her brothers however they soon ran back in fear that they were traveling the wrong way. One night when she was having another sleeping spell she dreamed she could fly and saw the path to liberation. She followed the north star all the way to Pennsylvania where she made multiple trips back and fourth 13 times to free her family and many others. After earning the name, "Black Moses," and having many bounties placed on her. She helped so many people for the sake that she wanted everyone to have freedom, she was determined to free as many as she could and showed bravery and courage.

In conclusion, after everything Harriet Tubman did she represented courage and bravery while freeing many people and persevering while she did it.

The video, The BreathTaking Courage of Harriet Tubman, is about a woman named Harriet Tubman who becomes famous for being a black hero of America. This video is about her life. Its starts when she is born with many brothers and sisters in 1820, when her name was still Araminta. She was born as a slave, and sold to many people. One day, she was walking past a store when a two-pound weight got thrown to an escaping black man, but it missed and hit her instead. due to this, she started to have sleeping issues, where she would easily fall asleep, anytime, anywhere. This changed her life. Because of her disability, her owner decided to sell her, but when nobody agreed due to the issue, she got sent to her father to chop wood. She tried to run to freedom, but snuck back when they were scared of getting lost. She then parted on her own because she dreamed of a path. She succeeded and started to free other black peoples, which gave her the name of "Black Moses". She was a nurse, scout, and spy in the civil war, and was thee first American woman to lead a raid. She raised funds for slaved people and built a school and a hospital for them. She appeared in many places, and grew famous. In 1899, she was accepted $20 a month, and was put on a special $20 bill. She died in 1913, but was still remembered a lot by the people today. Her final words were, "I go away to prepare a place for you."

Tubman is an African American woman who was in the slave trade back when slavery was legal. In her lifetine, she has saved countless lives and shown courgae and resistance for the black race. For example, after escaping from her enslavers, she helped many, including her family, escape to freedom. She became the conductor of the Underground Railroad and helped slaves escape. She once said, "On my underground railroad, I've never ran a train off track and I never lost a passenger." Unfortunately, Tubman was cursed with a 'sleeping spell.' This definately took a toll on her life, as she would randomly fall asleep without warning.

Hariet's life was not an easy one, but it was very memorable and shaped the future of black people.

Harriet Tubman, was one of the strongest woman I've ever met, mentally. First, she lost her childhood by being a slave and doing a lot of work. When she did something wrong, she will be abused by the owners of the slaves. She then got narcolepsy, which was already even more unlucky at her age. Nobody wanted a slave with narcolepsy to work for them, therefore Harriet Tubman worked with her father instead chopping woods. After a while, she started to go against racism, and tried to tell people about why racism is a bad thing to do. I think she is very brave in her spirit, because although she had a terrible childhood, she didn't give up,, but continue to fight for herself.
"I never ran the train off the track, and I never lost a passenger."

The hero that freed many enslaved people, Harriet Tubman. She used the underground railroad to lead many slaves to freedom.

Harriet (aka Minty) was a working slave for an abusive master until one day... One day, she was on an errand to a neighbourhood store but then something unexpected happened. Out of the blur, a two pound weight came flying out of the store and dented her head. An overseer threw it but unintentionally hit Harriet in the head. After the incident, her master wanted to sell her but no one would buy her due to the fact that she had gotten Narcolepsy. The master thought she was hopeless so she was sent to work with her father Ben Ross. There, she learned how to luber, increasing her physical strength. Soon her master died and the widow was going to sell them. Harriet didn't want to be sold away from her family so she fled with her brothers Ben and Harry. They eventually had nowhere to go and went back. In 1849 she decided to set off on her own. She remembered hearing about the underground railroad so she followed the North Star to guide her. Knowing about the underground railroad, she returned to the south thirteen times to help free her family. In 1893 she became the first woman in US to lead and plan a military raid. The raid had helped free nearly seven hundred enslaved people in South Carolina. After a while, slavery was ABOLISHED. She donated to many schools and charities. She started appearing in many places and was soon put on the twenty dollar bill. Sadly her life ended in 1913 and her final words were "I go away to prepare a place for you"

Harriet Tubman has changed many lives in our world, and if it weren't for her then slavery might have not ended yet. She changed an accountable amount of lives risking her own life. We now think back on her worthy actions and her bravery to free so many people.

Have Heard of a story of a black woman changing other peoples beliefs about black people

This is the story of Harriet Tubman she was was a little girl when she was being sold and been slaved she was not weak or not strong but the thing she had was maturity of taking Care of things or doing something in the right way but something happened on day she was walking and someone ran from a man throwing a 2 pound weight but instead of hitting the man that was running it hit young Harriet she was left with a sleeping problem due to that and her master wanted to sell her but no one wants to buy a slave that has a problem of sleeping. Later she found her self helping her dad with wood and she kept doing it rill she grew up all over the years she heard the people that was suppose to carry the wood talking about the underground rail and how there are people living there with carriages and more in 1949 her master or owner died after that she and her brother snuck and tried to leave but they where to afraid of getting lost so they turned back later she manage to escape to another country and she went back to the slave country to get her family out of there it total she did this for 13 times and she will be remembered forever as this case is the most popular option for black history projects right next to viola Desmond.

I think the main idea is when you work hard the work pays off. I find this story inspiring

Harriet Tubman.... a brave courageous hero for all. Here is her story. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery. One day her master threw a two pound weight at her forehead. She would always have sleep spells. After the accident no one would want to buy her because of the incident. She ended up working with her dad. He master died a couple years later. Harriet Tubman she was born in Maryland United States of America, she was raised in a family that was being enslaved by white people to work their plantations, farms and cotton fields.

But even though she may seem like every other ordinary black slave she was more than that, when she was about eight years old when her mother brought her out to the store to buy some stuff for the slave master, a black slave was running away on the loose the slave master in pursuit, the white man finds that he cannot chase down the black man so he picks up a 2 pound lead piece and throws it missing the slave and hitting Harriet Tubman in the forehead causing a concussion and possible brain damage to her. Because she would not be able to work the lands for the white man a slave master thought of selling. But because of her injury no one would buy her in so she was nursed back to life by her mother until she could work again. Are you Tubman because of being struck in the head had random naps at random intervals during the day and because she had more frequent resting time she was the most efficient and strong workers at the plantation.

later in her life she escaped her slave master and travelled to the Freeland of Philadelphia United States of America, she headed towards Philadelphia because that state was a place where black people were free of slavery and free of discrimination Even though this is not 100% guaranteed a lot of black people took their chances and escape their slave master to the free land.

When she made it to the Freeland she started to earn money to buy weapons to protect yourself when she went back to Maryland to rescue her family and many others that were in slaved. After rescuing all of her family from slavery, she by herself and a few others plan out an attack or raid to break out slaves in South Carolina. After this she joined the US federal army becoming a nurse but then being promoted to a squad commander. She plans to tack on the East Coast states of the United States. She help saves more than 500 black slaves and liberated them.

When she retired she started a foundation to help kids women and men get away from slavery into a free life, she helps in many through Canada a place where a black people had their own place and they had been respected by each other.

Harriet Tubman. Have you heard of her? Well she is a black woman who helped slaves escape. In summary of her life, she was born into child slavery. When she was young, she mistakenly hit with a 2 pound weight. This caused her to sleep randomly at anytime which is going to happen for the rest of her life. For this reason, her owner tried to sell her but nobody wanted her. So instead she worked with her father who taught her how to lumber. Over time her physical strength grew which made her stronger. Later 3 blackk salesman would ship all of the wood she cut. Starting from there she overheard them talking about the underground railroad which includes safe houses, boat captains and wagon drivers who are freely to help enslaved people. One day she tried to use the underground railroad to help her escape with 2 of her brothers. Instead they turned back because they didn’t know where to go. Another night where everyone was sleeping, Harriet Tubman escaped headed to pennsylvania and to freedom. Once she arrived she turned back to help her brother, parents, friends, and many other slaves escape as well. During war, she first worked as a nurse but then she turned into a spy and later became a captain to lead an army. Gladly, after slavery was abolished and voting rights came. To her dismay, she was not allowed just because she is a woman. So she joined the fight for women's right to vote. She was a hard worker but she died from Pneumonia.

Harriet Tubman was a very brave, strong, and clever girl. Additionally, I hope that slavery would stop but not just for humans, but animals as well.

In the early 1820s Harriet (named Araminta Ross as a child) was born in Maryland. She was one of nine children, but unfortunately two of her older sisters were sold. Her life changed forever when an overseer accidentally hit Harriet with a two pound weight. This forever caused her to experience sleeping spells. In 1844 she married a free black man named John Tubman. Next she feared she was going to be sold away from her family, so she used something called the underground railroad. All network of safe houses, boat captains, and wagon drivers. Harriet used the north star to escape to the north. But she wasn't done. She freed her family and many others from slavery. During the civil war Harriet worked as a spy and nurse. When slavery was abolished Harriet raised funds for a schools and a hospital. Unfortunately Harriet died on March 10th,1913.

In conclusion Harriet is a very brave and courageous person, and she will always be remebered.

Who is Harriet Tubman? Harriet was a black woman who was born a slave. Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland United States of America in her family of nine children. Even as a child, Minty (Harriet) was hired out to different masters and received whippings as punishments. At the age of thirteen Harriet received a horrible head injury. On her errand to a store, a slave owner tried to throw an iron weight at one of his slaves, but hit Harriet instead. The injury nearly killed her and caused her to have dizzy spells and blackouts for the rest of her life. (narcolepsy) Her master thought she was helpless so he put her to work with her father who taught her how to lumber. Lumbering increased her physical strength and put her in touch with free black sailors who taught her about secret communications that happened along trade routes.

Her master died in 1849 and in the Fall of 1849 she set out on her own, the north star guiding her to Pennsylvania and freedom. She returned 13 times to the South to free her family and many others. During the Civil War, she worked as a union army, nurse scout and a spy. In 1863 she was the first woman in United States history to plan and lead a military raid which freed more than 700 enslaved people in South Carolina. With the help of her friends and other people she collected a veterans pension for her service in the union army. In 2016 the United States treasury announced that Harriet would be on the $20 dollar bill. “I go away to prepare a place for you” was her last words when she passed away on March 10th 1913.

In conclusion, Harriet Tubman was a fearless and strong person and will be remembered for heroic actions. She didn’t wait for someone else to come save them but she became the leader and freed herself and many others.

When Harriet was a girl, she was a slave. One day, when she was working, a master came, chasing his slave. When the master said to stop the slave, she said no. The slave got away, but poor Harriet got hit by a two pound weight. She started to get sleeping spells which is know today as narcolepsy. After she got hit, her master tried to sell her but no one bought her. So her master sent her to work with her father. One day Harriet me a man named John Tubman and they got married. Her master died and the widow was going to sell her. So she ran away and made it to Philadelphia. Later she went back to free her brothers. But then she had a sleeping spell and so the brothers went back because of fear. When she woke up, she decided to run away with her brother, but her brothers didn't want to so she ran by herself. Of course she came back and never got caught.

Harriet Tubman died and her last words were, I go away to prepare a place for you.

Harriet Tubman, have you ever heard of her? The woman who freed thousands of slaves and helped us end slavery? Well If you haven’t let me tell you who she is.

Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland in USA And was one of 9 children in her family and 2 where sold away. She was born into slavery only because she she was black. But when she was 8 she was at a store and a 2 pound weight came flying at her and hit her in the head and she got narcolepsy. After that, she couldn’t really work so she had to work with her father for the rest of her life. Then her master who owned her died and she was afraid she was going to get auctioned away from everyone she loved and cared about. In fear of this she ran away from the plantation to the Underground Railroad which is a network of safe houses, boats and wagon drivers who all had the same goal as Harriet. To end slavery. After that she went around freeing a bunch of slaves including her sisters,brothers, parents and friends. And during the American civil war she worked as a spy and as a nurse and was the first woman to lead an attack that freed lots of slaves. Harriet Tubman also raises funds for schools and hospitals. But on March 10th 1913 she passed away.

The summary of this story is that Harriet Tubman is a very brave strong and courageous woman and that no matter how tough your life is you can change it and everyone else who is suffering from the same thing if you really want the change.

Have you ever heard of the story of Harriet Tubman? Well, Harriet Tubman is a black woman who thought that slavery should be abolished and she lead the slaves to freedom in the end.

The story of Harriet Tubman started when she was a little girl she was sold and she had been a slave since then. However, a tragedy happened later. It all happened when a man was running from the overseer and the man throw a two pounds weight thing at the runner but instead of hitting the runner, it hit Harriet and she was left with a sleeping spell because of the two pounds weight. Her master wanted to sell her but no one wanted to buy a slave that had a sleeping problem. Later, she was working with his dad and she heard the underground railroad. She escaped but she didn't forget about her people and she went back many times to free her family and the other black slaves. "On my underground railroad, I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." that's what Harriet said and she did it anyway.

I think that the big idea of Freedom Train is telling us racist is a wrong thing to do and we shouldn't do it.

Harriet Tubman was a brave and strong woman(mentally and physically) who escaped slavery and also helped a lot of other people escape too. So today i'll talk a little about her, but before I start, I want to talk about why I think she's so strong. I think it's because she never gave up. Like tons of bad things happened to her, but she didn't give up on life and helped others escape there misery. Anyways, back to the information. She started her life being a slave, and she got really sick so her master send her home to rest, and one day her mom went shopping and told her to wait outside the mall, just then, a slave ran by with a master after her, the master threw a two pound weight at her forehead because she was trying to hit the other slave but missed. When she woke up, she found her head dented, now she would always have sleep spells because of the injury.This means she would fall asleep randomly. After the accident no one would want to buy her because of the incident. She ended up working with her dad. After a few days passed, she decided to run away with two of her brothers, but during the run she fell asleep while running with her brothers. They freaked out and brought her back home. Luckily no slave catchers caught her. After her mother was super mad that she tried to run away. But the next day I walked away from home to look for a job and got a job in a hotel. I planned to save up for a gun in case a slave catcher saw me, when I finally got my gun, I went to save my family and a lot of other people. After that I just lived a normal life because there was nothing else left to do.

Harriet Tubman is a hero to many of us but is also an inspiration to everyone.

Who is Harriet Tubman? Her name was Araminta Ross (or Minty). She worked as a slave for many people. One time when she was running errands she went to a store and the person at the store was chasing a black man and threw a 2 pound weight which accidentally hit her and gave her brain damage which cause her to have narcolepsy. Then Araminta’s owner tried to sell her but because of her narcolepsy no one wanted her so she went to work with her father as a lumberjack. She was working with her father when she met John Tubman, married him and changed her name to Harriet Tubman. Soon after her owner died, she was afraid of being sold so she looked for ways to escape. She heard about these routes from these free black men which she would use as an escape route to help her later in life.

A little while after he and her brothers tried to escape but were lost so they headed back. One night she had a dream about how to escape and made her way out to freedom. She managed to free many people during her thirteen trips on the underground railroad. She served as a nurse in the army and even led a raid. In addition, she set up schools and hospitals and worked hard for women’s suffrage.

She was born a slave and was whipped by her slave owners if she ever did anything wrong. As if that wasn't enough harm done to Harriet, she was hit in the head with a heavy metal weight, causing her to suffer through sleeping spells. When hearing of rumours that she and her family were going to be sold, Harriet decided to run away, and she succeeded. After her escape, Harriet went back to save her family and friends, then became a Union nurse, cook, scout and spy in the American Civil war, fighting for the freedom of slaves. During the war, she became the first woman to lead a raid against the military and freed approximately 700 slaves. Even after all slaves were free and the law was passed, women were still not allowed to vote. So, she continued her journey for her rights and eventually succeeded with that too.

Harriet Tubman was born in a Dorchester country in Maryland in the US in the early 20s. She was the fifth child of her family and two of her older sisters were sold to a chain gang. She later on married someone in 1844 named John Tubman who was a free Blackman. She later on changed her name to Harriet Tubman named after her mother. Her owner died in 1849 when his widow plan was to sell Harriet Tubman’s enslaved human beings. She feared that she would be sold away from everyone she loved. She then heard about an Underground Railroad a secret network of safe houses, bout captains, and wagon drivers willing to harbour enslaved people on there way north. Tubman then fled with two of her brother Ben and Harry. They later on turned back thinking they were lost. In one of Harriets sleeping spell she dreamed of flying like a bird she saw the path of liberation and in the autumn of 1849 she said out on her own following the North Star to Pennsylvania and to the south to free her nieces, brothers, parents, and way more. Harriet Tubman was a huge change to our lives and if it wasn’t for her risking her life to free the enslaved people slavery probably would still be going on right now right here. She was very brave and courageous for the stuff she did for us and we will never forget that.

The big idea is that one person who believes in something, can absolutely change the way the world and peoples mind thinks and works. Harriet Tubman grew up in Maryland USA and worked for her slave masters. She was the 5th or 9 children in her family. Two of her siblings got sold to different slave masters than the rest of her family. Few years later, she was walking into a store, and the owner was trying to throw a 2 pound metal weight at an enslaved fugitive but missed and hit Harriet instead. Around this time, she has heard of the Underground Railroad, a chain of safe houses and people willing to help black slaves to be free from their masters. Born on January 29th, 1820, Harriet Tubman was born into slavery.From a young age, she worked various jobs. One day, while out with her mom, she was hit by a 2 pound lead capsule. This causes brain damage. Harriet was cursed with sleeping spells, also known as Narcolepsy, meaning she would fall asleep at random times. her master thought she would be of no use so she was sent to work with her father Ben Ross. there, she was taught how to lumber. This built up her physical strength and it helped her get in contact with men who would ship the wood. She heard of rumours of the underground railway.
In 1849, Harry Tubman escaped to the North, to become the famous conductor of the underground railroad. Throughout her “career”, as the underground railroad conductor, she risked her life multiple times to help hundreds of slaves escape from their owners. By her extraordinary courage, Harriet became the railroad’s most famous conductor and was known as the “Moses of her people.” it said that she has never lost a fugitive she was leading to freedom.
Harriet Tubman's life wasn't an easy one, but it definitely made major impacts to the black community today.

In our History, we have many amazing people who made a difference and changed so much. They stood up for what they believed in when no one else wanted to speak up. They inspired us, taught us lessons, gave us hope, and told us that we were all special and important. Harriet Tubman is one of the thousands of people who changed many people's lives.

First I would like to start off with what I think is the big idea for this video. I think the big idea is courage. I think this because Harriet Tubman was courageous and saved many slaves from a horrible life of work and labor. She saved many slaves using the Underground Railroad, which I think is courage because I think many people would not do it but chicken out. I mean, what if you get caught? What would the owners of the slaves do to her? Harriet Tubman must have known about the consequences but she didn’t want anyone to suffer she wanted them to live their lives to the fullest. Maybe they would kill her! Luckily that didn’t happen. This is why I think the big idea is courage.

Harriet Tubman was actually named Araminta Ross when she was born and was born in the early 1820s. She was born into slavery. Her nickname was “Minty” and was the fifth child born out of nine. Unfortunately, two of Minty’s sisters were sold to a chain gang. Minty was hired by different owners and often got whipped and punished. When Minty was going to a store she got hit by a two pound weight which was meant to be thrown at someone else, a fugitive, but it got her knocking her out. Minty started to fall asleep even when she wasn’t sleepy this is called narcolepsy. Minty’s owners tried to sell her but no one would buy a slave that fell asleep on the job. Since no one bought her she was put to work with her father Ben Ross. The jobs she was put through increased her physical strength. Black sailors were soon in touch with her and took the wood she chopped to sell. Then she learned about the secret communication that occurred on trade routes… Later on she met John Tubman, a free person. They married in 1844. After she got married she renamed herself Harriet Tubman, Harriet was her mother’s name. Her owner died soon after. She feared she would be sold to another owner and be separated from her loved ones. Harriet heard of an Underground Railroad, where they harbour fugitives on their way north. She went with a few people but they feared they were lost so they went back. In 1849 in autumn, she set out and followed the North Star to Pennsylvania.
She returned 13 times to the south to free her friends and family. During the civil war she worked as a nurse, scout, and a spy. In 1863, she was the first ever woman to lead a military raid, she and others freed 700 slaves in South Carolina. Harriet and many others helped her get a veteran pension from her service in the union army. In 2016, the US treasury announced that Harriet would appear on the $20.00 bill. March 10th 1913, Harriet passed away, her last words were “I go away to prepare a place for you”

In conclusion, Harriet was a brave and courageous person, who saved many people, and changed many people's lives.

Right from the beginning, Harriet Tubman, or Araminta Ross, was a slave at birth. She suffered a miserable life and was treated very poorly. One day, when carrying out her master's orders, she was struck in the head by a weight. Due to this unfortunate stroke of fate, she suffered from narcolepsy, a life-changing condition that caused her to fall asleep on random occasions. Her owner tried to sell her off but failed to do so since no buyer would want such a poor worker. After this, she was sent to her father who taught her how to lumber. One day, while Harriet was working, she heard rumours of the underground railroad. A route to freedom. Determined to break free she ran away with her brothers but had second thoughts. Later, in 1849, she tried again and made it. Once free, she was determined to free others, and so she did, travelling back and forth over a course of time. Known as the "Black Moses" she carried out this act, freeing over 300 slaves. She also worked during the civil war as a Union army nurse, scout, and spy during the Civil War. Harriet Tubman also planned and lead a military raid! She raised money to aid formerly enslaved people, and soon enough, they helped her back. Through the support of many others, Harriet received a $20 veterans pension. To her deathbed, she only had one thing on her mind, The freedom of others.
In conclusion, Harriet Tubman is a legend that will forever be in our history, for she is an inspiring and dedicated hero.

This Ted Ed video was centered around Harriet Tubman and her struggles and triumphs. Harriet was born a slave but through some unique circumstances she learnt of the underground railroad and was determined to escape. After her escape she really became an integral part in the fight to end slavery. For example she went back to 13 times to rescue members of her friends and family. She also successfully planned and executed a military raid that freed over 700 slaves. Later on she was an advocate for building schools and one hospital to provide care to freed slaves. Some of her final works were funding for women's rights, including their right to vote. She was an amazing woman, her final words on her deathbed were "I go away to prepare a place for you" I feel that this really demonstrates the life she led focused on helping others.

Have you ever heard of Harriet Tubman\Minty?

Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross, she was born into slavery. Minty, was hired out to different owners who subjected her into whipping and punishments. Soon, Minty's life had changed forever on an errant when a neighbourhood store. There an overseer threw a 2 pound weight. At a fugitive slave. Missed, and then struct Minty instead. Her injury caused narcolepsy for the rest of her life. Minty's owner tried to sell her but, no one wanted to take her because she has narcolepsy. She was instead put to work with her father. Her father thought her how to lumber. Lumber had made her physical strengths a lot better. Minty learned about the secret communication. Information that would prove invaluable leader in her life. Later on, Minty met John Tubman and they soon got married in 1884. After marriage she changed her name to Harriet, under her mother. Later on in the video, Harriet Tubman's owner died in 1849. Then, in the end she decided to go to the underground railroad instead, because she was scared that her owner's wife would just sell her and away from her love ones.

In conclusion, Harriet was a brave and strong woman, who saved many people, and also independent.

Have you heard the real story of Harriet Tubman (or Minty)?

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and was treated horribly. She was abused by multiple owners. When running an errand, someone tried to throw a two pound weight at another enslaved black person. This ended terribly as Harriet got hit by the weight. This changed her life, from that day on, she would fall asleep because of her "sleeping spells", most commonly known as narcolepsy now. Because of her sleeping spells, she became unwanted and her owners tried to sell her. No-one wanted her so she worked with her father, Ben Ross. He taught her how to chop wood and she got to hear what the secret communications for the trade routes were. Minty (Harriet) then met her husband, John Tubman who inspired Minty to change her name to Harriet (named after her mom) Tubman.

Later on, Harriet worked with her brothers, Harry and Ben to help free enslaved "blacks". Over time, she saved over 700 slaves and became the first woman to lead and plan a military route. This was when she freed many slaves, Harriet didn't give up there yet, though. When she saw that only men were allowed to vote, she protested on fighting for women's rights. She wanted women to be able to vote just the same as men.

She also had a famous quote "I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger," this was very inspiring because she is saying that she persevered and never gave up on freeing her people. Because of her perseverance, she was the face on the new American $20.00 bill.

SO, I think the big idea of the video is to show that Harriet had a rough time growing up but, she never gave up on proving a point, her people deserved much better than they were treated. She freed them even though she knew it could get her killed.

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery as the 5th of her nine siblings, with 2 of them being sold to another owner. When she was young, she was hit in the head with a 2 pound lead weight and suffered brain damage which led to her randomly sleeping. Her master then attempted to sell her but found no buyers. She was then assigned to work with her father where she learned to chop wood, something she got very good at. While doing this she learned of the underground railroad. In 1849 she escaped successfully by following the north star. after using the underground railroad to escape she decided to become a conductor for the underground railroad. while doing this she was famously quoted as saying “On my Underground Railroad, I never ran my train off the track and never lost a passenger.” after freeing many slaves the civil war broke out where she organized a raid where she freed 700 slaves. She also was a nurse scout and spy beforehand. She sadly passed in 1913 .
in conclusion slavery is bad and harriet tubman is a true american hero.

From the start, Harriet Tubman's life started horrible, she was straight away born straight into slavery. She was a slave since she was just 8 years old! A day Harriet would not remember in a good way came by, she was hit by a 2 pound weight by mistake at her local grocery store. The injury caused her to have narcolepsy, as it was a sleeping spell back then. Narcolepsy caused her to be unwanted and useless to others, people even wanted to try and sell her, which didn't work out because nobody wanted a black girl with narcolepsy. After all that, Harriet worked with her father named Ben Ross and learned how to lumber. As lumber was a tough task, she grew stronger and stronger. Sometimes she would get whipped or lashed. Harriet Tubmans name used to be Minty, but got changed after marrying her now husband, who is John Tubman. Harriet's master died in 1849, it might be sad, but also happy because Harriet would be free. Afraid not her master's wife would've gone and sold her, which is why Harriet decided to go to the Underground Railroad. She was a confident, hardworking black women, which is why she is on the twenty dollar bill for America. Harriet made the world better for everyone!

This is the story of Harriet Tubman.
Harriet was born right into slavery with the rest of her 9 siblings 2 of her siblings were sold to a different plantation. When Harriet was young she was hit with a 2 pound weight she suffered brain damage the brain damage led her to have random sleeping spells because of these sleeping spells she became unwanted by slave buyers because she had no buyers she was assigned to work with her father while working with her father she found some info about an Underground Railroad. 1849 she tried to escape and succeeded following the northerns star. She came to free her people 13 times.

I think the big idea of the video is to show Harriets amazing story on how she freed slaves.

Harriet Tubman. She was born into slavery the fifth of nine children to her mother. but unfortunately two of them were sold to another owner. She official worked as a slave at age eight when she could work. A bit later Harriet was walking to the store and saw a runaway slave and their master trailing hi he threw a two pound weight at the slave and struck Harriet instead. She would struggled with sleeping spells for the rest of her life. Her master tried to sell her but proved unsuccessful. Her father from then on taught her how to lumber which'd helped her become stronger. She soon decided to escape. She snuck down the path and she soon arrived in a no slave area and from then on freed around 700 slaves. Harriet Tubman was a brave woman who stood up for what she believed.

Harriet Tubman is a well known and respected figure in North American history. She freed over 600 slaves and was the first women to plan and lead a rade. She was a union nurse and spy in the sivile war. I think one big idea about her is that she was brave, rebellious and someone who broke more than one barrier. I think we should all look up to harriet tubman and try to lead as she did
