Friday: Child Labour

Over the last few days, the students reinforced their open-ended and close-ended questioning skills on the topic of 'CHILD LABOUR'. They created several 'WONDER WALLS' on Today's Meet using picture sets on this topic. The students were able to create a central location where they were able to see a constant stream of questions/comments that they created so they would be able to learn from their peers. You can see what they did here:

1.) MATH 6: Use your research skills and see if you can calculate this question. What is the formula for calculating percent? For example, If you scored 30 out of 50 on a test, what percent does that equate to? See if you can draw a picture that represents the percent. You must hand-in your home work on Monday.

MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

2.) LA: Complete writing body paragraph 2 and 3. You will complete your assessment/feedback forms on Monday morning. It is very important you have body paragraph 1, 2, and 3 ready to go on Monday.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE #1:

Visit Tarantula's Learning Journey and comment on at least 4 of his blogs. Leave a comment plus a question or some feedback.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE #2:

What did you learn from watching the two YouTube clips on 'CHILD LABOUR' today?
How did it make you feel?
Will you think twice about buying certain products made by companies that support child labour? If so, why? If not, why not?
Find another video on YouTube and post it as a new Blog Post on YOUR E-Folio / Learning Journey. Your post should include reasons why you chose this video and what people can learn from it.

i think tat the video that we watched in class today was very sad because people force children to work for them to get money and the children don't get paid much for example the teenage women working for nike only get paid 40 cents a hour. those people can barely survive on that kind of money. i think that child slavery should not be permitted in the world. its amazing how such bad people like that force kids to go to work at such a young age! (i was being sarcastic about that last sentence) i wish people would stop child slavery. i think people should think twice over buying some certain brands when your shopping for everyday things.

I think the video I saw in class today was powerful because innocent people have to work to make nike shoes or Hanes underwear and they only got 6 and a half cents an hour for making Hanes underwear and 40 cents an hour for making nike shoes. The fact that they beat them if they are absent for one day and they are only kids and also, the bathrooms are filthy and there is no toilet paper. It just blows my mind how hey keep on doing this around the world it made me feel that I needed to stop supporting these companies that make stuff using childeren.

I think if I were to buy Nike shoes or Hanes underwear I will probably ask where it was imported from and where it was made. According to, www.unicef.org "All children should be protected from violence, abuse and neglect, and governments should protect them" so if certain company's still do it then either it is against the law or there government does not protect them.

I tthink the video we wacthed in class today was powerfull in a way thhat makes me not to ever buy products from Nike or iteams from 3rd world countrys. If you were to watch the videos we saw in class today you would never buy those products.

from the videos we saw in class I learned that common things in our house have been made by kids are age. they are being tortured to work and don’t have a choice. it sucks but now I know to look at the tags to be more aware of what happens. I feel so bad for them because they don’t know better when they start and after a couple years they regret it. two brands I will never buy from again is nike and hanes. the more you buy the more you support the companies and the more support they get the more they get tortured it’s a chain reaction.

I learned that a lot of big companies use slavery to make their products like Nike. If you buy their products, you will support the slavery even more, but, if you don’t buy them the kids who are working will not get any money, so it’s a lose - lose.

I think that i will think twice before I buy something because they could be 3rd World country products, which are created by kids.

One thing I learned about child labor today was that people can be our cruel and that we kinda need these workers at the same time. People need these workers because 1st world countries pay the, and if we don't pay, workers in all places would lose their jobs and starve to death, there is only one point in life where it is better to go on and it is not at their age yet.

I think the video that we watched in class today (Jan 25th 2013) was very sad because these adults forse kids under the age of 10 to make shoes, and more. They work the whole day and only get paid about 10 cents an hour. Just think about it, we have mostly everything while they have to work the whole entire day and get paid $3.50 a week. You can barely survive with that kind of money.

I learned that there are many things that we don't see, but they are there, and are hiding in different countries. I also learned that although big name brands like Nike seem innocent, but they are actually not. I will start to think twice about what I buy, because I know that certain things will just support child labour. It made me feel really upset that I never really knew about this. Especially seeing how much they get payed to work each day. I only had a brief understanding about this topic. I will start to think twice now that I know about this huge problem around the world which is not getting fixed. I probably won't change all at once but I will try my best. This could be a new years resolution that I can add to my list.

I learned that huge companies like Nike and Hanes are doing something called slavery. When I heard this horrible news I felt sick to my stomach, and I wanted to never wear Hanes or Nike because of the horrible things that people do. In my opinion I will never want to even see those companies, because when ever I hear the words Nike, and Hanes I feel sick to my stomach.

This will make me think twice aboyt buying thise brands because it will be supporting a bad cause, it is pretty much just us supporting bullying by buying those products. But on the other side if we dont buy their stuff then the kids will lose their jobs and could find worst jobs, but could also get them a better job, so it is 50-50. Really the best we can hope for is the government will make a change that will stop this from happening completely.

But instead we bought a more expensive one made in Canada.

@ Juliette - Hmmm, you should do some research into the company that made the shampoo. Remember, not all companies in 3rd world countries are bad. However, there are many companies who treat their employees inhumanely and also use children to work in their factories. What is the most valuable thing you learned in class on Friday?

I felt that it wasn't fair and that no one should have to go through that. I felt that If I was in charge I would put am end to the sweat shop is china and indonisha. I would pay the girls and boys more money and make the conditions better to work in.

Maybe but I might still buy Nike because they are good shoes. My dad tolled me that the girls that work there are there so they can survive and get food and clothes. It is ether work and survive or don't work and go hungry so those gril are just trying to survive and live.

Also i learned that Nike and Hanes at one point both had factories that had kids working in them (Child slaves) I don't know if they still do but i am sure after that video they lost some customers.

I learned that many of the common companies such as nike and Hane’s are made under child labour. These children don’t even make a dollar an hour. A girl named Halima made $3.20 a week. That is not nearly enough to survive. I learned that around 56 million children under the age of fifteen are involved in child labor. Halima never even had a toothbrush. She used ashes and her toothbrush. Nike uses teenage girls to make their products. Seeing this made me sad because kids my age are going through things no kid (or adult) should ever have to go through. It made me want to do something about it.
Know I will think about what I buy because I don’t want to be supporting companies that make kids work in unpleasent working conditions.

From the videos we watched I learned new things about certain major companies, like Nike and Hanes. I used to think that Nike was a great company but after I saw a video about child labor, nike sweatshops, and hanes. I think the reason that nike doesn't make shoes in the U.S is because the use children to make their shoes. When I saw these videos I felt so sad and lucky at the same time because I don't have to go through that and I live where child rights are followed. It made me realize that I should always watch out when I'm buying anything because if it's a product made by child labor if I buy it I will be supporting child labor.

I think that the video was very powerful. I learned that there is a lot of child labour going on in the world. For example, Nike made kids in indonesia work and make shoes, and only paid the kids 40 cents! Thats a total rip off! I personally never wear Nike anyway, but I don’t really suggest wearing Nike since it’s just continuing the child labour. I just wonder how those evil people can make these kids slaves like that! If you want to stop this, we have to stop wearing so much Nike and clothes that say “Made in a third world countrie”. On the other hand, if we stop buying that stuff, the kids who are slaves will not have enough money to support their family. So, in order to make this a win-win situation, we will have to try to advertise the child labour and help find other jobs for kids that are not abusive and get paid more.

I learned from the videos that companies like Hanes are lying about having adults working there and really having kids working there. The girl in the video said that when buyers come the kids have to hide in the bathroom. (I think that everyone thought it was ''fires'' but I watched the video again and it's really ''buyers'') I will think twice about buying certain products made by companies that support child labour because it's not fair that kids younger than me have to work in factories for very, very, very, very little pay.

I feel really bad for these kids it makes me feel horrible to think that people would make kids & teenagers do that for about 40 cents an hour. Now I think of what my mom always says "be greatfull for what you have and always tresure it." I never think kids and teenagers should have to go throught child labor. Something should be done in my opinion.

I learned plenty from the two videos. Firstly, I learned that even popular brands like Nike take advantage of poor people in third world countries. Another thing I learned is that they are paid very, very, tiny amounts! Lastly, I learned that we take money for granted. They earn 42 cents per hour! Watching those videos made me feel plenty of different emotions. I felt sad, depressed, angry, confused, disgusted and plenty more. I felt sad and depressed, because it's sad to here what horrible things people do just to earn money. I was angry because they abuse kids and they can't do anything about it. I was disgusted and confused because these people don't even care, that they are abusing kids and taking advantage of them. Now, I will totally think twice before I buy Nike or Hanes. I just feel bad because I have plenty of nike clothing. The reason I will think twice is because most likely, a kid made it! So by not buying their products, they will lose money and the kids will be free.

Most of the facts in both of those videos, I knew about. But, I never knew how the children felt about it. I did learn how children are beaten up for very minor things and the minimum amount of money that they receive for working on going hours with literally no breaks. It really breaks my heart to see children my age and some even younger, having to go through all of that. It's very unfair, and watching that I realize how fortunate I am. I really have no words because my heart is broken when I see these innocent children. I will try to not buy products that support child labor, because kids like me shouldn't have to suffer like that and supporting it will just make it worse. I probably will buy it once and a while but I will most definitely try and stay back from purchasing those products.
