FRIDAY: ELECTRICITY GENERATION

5/23/2014

Today, the students learned about different ways that electricity can be produced by generators and turbines. (blurb and Instagram to be updated)

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work
MATH 7: Complete board work (chart) and worksheet 6.2. Your unit test will be on Wednesday.

2.) SCIENCE:

Title page must be finished by Tuesday.
Must include at minimum of 5 pictures that represent different ways that electricity can be generated.
Complete POWER STATIONS pg 87 handout. Use the posted videos to complete the drawings.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Choose either nuclear power, hydroelectricity, or fossil fuels. (videos)
In paragraph form (using transition words), describe how electricity is created.

How water produces electricity is when the water goes through a tube in the dam there will be a spinny thing and since the water is flowing it will make the spinny thing spin. When the water is doing this the spinny thing is making energy every time it spins.

Good job describing how electricity is made in a dam but next time try to find the proper names for the objects used instead of calling them spinny things.

Hydroelectricity

The water is blocked by a dam to raise the level. Then, they open the dams so all of the water goes down with a lot of pressure. The water goes into the plant intake and it meets a turbine water wheel that increases the pressure even more. When the turbine water wheel spins, it creates electricity.

Fossil fuels are an electricity creator. They convert the energy of burning coal into electricity. First, coal is shipped to the buildings that the process takes place in. The coal is then taken to a place called the coal yard, where it is arranged into piles. The piles are put into a machine that grinds the coal up into bits. The bits are burned in a large tank, and heats up water that runs in tubes inside the tank. The steam from the hot water turns turbines. The turbines that turn create electricity, and it is transferred all across BC.

Hydroelectricity:

Hydroelectricity traps all the running water until there is a lot of water. Them the let the water flow through with lots of pressure. All the water then goes through stubs to roter which spins and creates electricity.

For Hydroelectric they need to make a dam then make the water fill up so that when they release the dam the water goes through the dam and down to the turbine after that the turbine spins from the water hitting it and then the turbine spins so fast it makes electricity.

Nuclear power plants make electricity fuel rods hold nuclear pellets which make fission chain reaction possible. In the fission chain reaction thermal energy is released.Water is needed to absorb the thermal energy and keep the reaction going. Inside the vessel the water is heated to over 570 degrees fahrenheit. However, The water does not boil since the pressurizer maintains the water pressure at about 160 bars. The heated water then travels to a pump where it gets pumped into a heat exchanger also called steam generator. These are typically in the form of a shell and tube heat exchanger. Hot water flows through the "U" tubes heating up the metal of the pipes so that any water inside the heat exchanger begins to boil. The resulting steam is eventually fed through a bunch of pipes to the turbine building. The steam first drives a high pressure turbine and then is typically fed through 2 low pressure turbines. All of the turbines are connected by a spinning shaft to the electrical generator. Which in turn produces AC electricity from the shafts rotational energy. The steam is converted again into a liquid form in a condenser and then returned back to the steam generator. Water needed for this often comes from a nearby water source or is cooled in a cooling tower. the water circulation systems are always kept separate from one another. water in the primary circulation system never leaves the containment center this water is radioactive. The water from the secondary circuit and the tertiary circuit is not radioactive.

In the turbine building it houses several turbines and a generator necessary for energy.
Then in the contaminant building is where the nuclear reactor is made out of meter thick reinforced concrete because of radiation they don't want getting out. In the contaminate building their is nuclear reactions that occur making boiled water to go to the cooling tower.
In the cooling tower there is hot water that is being cooled.
The most important part of the nuclear power plant is the reactor pressure vessel.
What it does is in the green tank called the actual vessel has 12 meter assemble rods then there are 5 meter rods in the assemble ones with the actual fuel pellets.
In the fuel pellets there is nuclear fuel.
In the thermal nuclear chain reaction water comes in the vessel and is in contact with the rods which makes it radioactive water. in the vessel the water is heated but not to much because the pressurizer lets in an perfect amount of pressure so that it wont boil.
the heated water is pumped to the heat exchanger which now boils the water so the steam comes into 3-4 turbines in the turbine building. It is usually fed to 1 high pressure turbine the to 2 low pressure turbines. the steam creates energy then the energy is stored.

Fossil Fuels
First they get ether coal, oil, or gas to use. then they will take the coal for instance. They, will take it and crush it into really small peaces, after that they will get sent to the fernice. That's, where the coal burns and water goes through in pipes and turns to steam. After, they take that steam and run it though turbines. Then, it creates electricity.

Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectricity is falling water that is converted to electricity. To begin, the water flows through the penstock and it goes into the turbine water wheel. Secondly, the turbine spins the rotor inside the generator. Inside the generator is copper wire that is called stater that holds electromagnets. Finally, the generator spins the rotor creating a flow of electrons which is known as electricity. Furthermore, things called transformers can increase the voltage of the electricity that has been created.

Hydroelectricity is electricity made from water. The water goes into a dam so they can raise the water. It then goes down into the water wheel. The water spins the wheel which is connected to the rotor in the generator. Then electromagnets located in copper wire known as the stater. The rotor sends electromagnets through the stater and cause the electricity to go in through the stater and out into power lines sent throughout the city. Then the water is released back into the ocean or river.

Hydroelectricity is started from water. First, the water needs to go down into a dam, which raises the water level. Then, the dam opens and all the water flows down really fast. After that, the water goes through to the turbine (water wheel). The turbine spins the water and that's how the electricity is created. This cycle repeats on and on for electricity to be created.

How electricity was created by hydro is when water travels through the forebay, or the pipe, it heads toward a water turbine wheel making the water pressure increase. Then water travels through stubs to rotor. Then it starts to spin an create electricity.

Hydro electricity is created when a dam collects water increasing the water level and pressure.
Hydro electricity is created after once the water flows down from the damn into a turbine, which then spins it creating enough power to spark electricity.

Water is stored in a large dam, containing gallons and gallons of water. The water will then be pushed down multiple tubes along the dam, and kept at high pressure. The pressure is used so the water will actually push the device, much like a wheel, the rotation creating power and the water continuing down its path to be used again, the same process happening in multiple other tubes, all generators producing energy.

You could say a water fan turns and all of that creates electricity. Like the electricity for cars and to charge your phone.

When they make electricity with fossil fuels they, first crush up the coal into small pieces before they burn it. After, they put the coal into a heater with water pipes. With the heat the steam is made and carried in pipes to turbines. The steam then pushes the turbines with them with the pressure and flow of the steam. The turbine is connected to a generator that is connected to electrode magnets and copper wires. When it turns a flow of electrons is created

Hydro electricity is made when water is stored in a dam and then let it go and the water rushes down in to the turbines. When the water goes throw the turbines then it goes in to the generator then it travels from the generator to the power lines and we get electricity.

The way that hydroelectricity works is by putting a dam on a huge river, then the gravity would pull the water into the penstock. At the end of the penstock is the water propeller which is turned by flowing water. Their is a shaft connected to the generator which will produce all the power. This then goes into the power lines to peoples houses, buildings, etc.

Hydroelectricity is when water is put in a dam. The dam is on a river then the water go into the turbines. then goes to the generators then to power lines. Then from power lines to people homes, ect...
