FRIDAY: "It's Friday, Friday......"

We began the day with a science experiment about memory that involved the whole class. Ms. Fei helped to design this experiment as a part of an undergraduate psychology course, and was excited to share the experiment with the class. Students were shown 15 words consecutively and then asked to recall as many words as they could. Half the class were shown just the words, and the other half of the class were shown words along with images. Our results showed that having images definitely helped with remembering the words! After the experiment, we discussed about the independent, dependent, and controlled variables involved in the experiment.

related to the theme because none of the men that Harriet knows are nice, or free, so there is no way they could help free her.
characters involved are Harriet, and her father. I think she was trying to say that her dad was not like any of the other men. Her dad is different because he wasn't free but he was accepting of it. and is willing to help Harriet.
text to world because there are still slaves today, but none of them are brave enough to come back to get their friends if they were able to escape slavery
the author's message is that you should really be brave, and not a coward. if you are a coward no one is going to reward for you anything that you did.

1:Quote: “When she called on me.” This is something that to me felt very powerful because it makes you feel on how Harriet would feel inside of her when the master calls her name. Like if you know that you are in trouble and someone is not at all happy with you, When they call your name you probably won't feel all nice and happy inside. It would at that moment when the master called on her she probably would have feel like a rock is fall slowly down your throat. Have you ever felt like that at all? I think we all have had this feeling before.

2:Quote: “Her purchase at christmas was a heavy silver pistol.” I had felt that this quote had a lot of feeling and understanding, and powerful wording in it. Because in the book she had also had gone to the meat shop. So she probably would not use this gun to hunt down any food at all. What we had discussed in our book club discussion, that it would probably had been used to show that if someone were to come and hurt her should could point the gun and show them that she is not afraid, and that she does have some courage deep down.

Firstly, this quote "My head feels empty like my stomach" is related to my theme hunger/freedom because his head feels empty because he is in this workshop and he is doing stuff day after day and it gets so boring and Scar barely feeds him so his head feels empty like his stomach. Secondly, Gopal is the character that said this and he is probably always hungry because Scar never feeds him mostly because he is new and does not know better. Thirdly, There is a bog text to world connection with this because there are thousands and thousands of other kids that are going through the same thing as Gopal. Lastly, I think that authors message is that no one should be hungry because everyone is human and he/she should have food because everyone has a purpose and people should be stuck in this situation.

Firstly, this quote “That world seems so close and yet, so far” plays a big role in freedom/hunger because when Gopal said this he was inside the factory looking out the window and he is saying that the world outside seems so far. Secondly, This is related to freedom because no one should say this everyone should be able to go outside and be free to play around and not be locked up in some factory. Thirdly, Gopal’s experience when saying this is when he was planning to get out of this . that he is in and since it is close to impossible to get out he said “That world seems so close and yet, so far”. Fourthly, Again there is a big text to world connection to this because a lot of kids are in this same situation as Gopal and they cannot go outside because they are locked up. Lastly, I think the authors message is that there are billions of kids have to say this and she just wants it to end.

On page 114 Scar says to Gopal “ Stay there you rat. “ It relates to child abuse because Scar is abusing Gopal through words. The characters involved as I said are Gopal and Scar. This happens when Gopal just comes to the factory and is being stubborn and not listening to Scar. He is being stubborn because he does not want to be in the factory because he has gotten tricked. The text to world connection is that adults and other people treating other people not the right way. Everyone is equal so nobody should be bullying anybody. The message that the author is showing me is that nobody should be treating other people unfairly. Even if you are older than somebody doesn’t mean you are better than them. Another connection I have is text to self. I know lots of people that were bullied in our school. They were called names and it really hurt their feelings. Though they were not abused physically, they were hit, with words.

Pg.187 - “ And you want me to believe it, you stupid cockroach? This quote relates to child abuse. It relates to it because an older person is abusing little kids, not through fighting, but through words. The person saying this is Scar. And he is telling this to Gopal. It’s very rude. The reason Scar is telling him this is because Gopal is trying to say that he is the one that saved Scar’s work. Not GC. But Scar doesn’t believe him and tells him in a way that is not right. There is a text to text connection with the book Iqbal. Because in the book Iqbal, they have a master that doesn’t treat the kids nicely. On page 3 in Iqbal the quote says - “ ... who had slept chained by their ankles to their looms. “ The master makes the children chained to their looms when they sleep. This is another sign that the master does not treat the kids nicely. Another connection I have is T-T. In the boy that cried wolf, the boy lies and pretends that their is a wolf. But one day, there actually is a wolf. But now, nobody believes the boy because he lied all those times. It relates to Gopal because he is always trying to show that he is right but nobody believes him because he is new. The author message through that was that even though Scar didn’t hit him, he was still strongly affected.

I actually think those kids might not feel pain because they have been in poverty since they were born or they have been in child labour for a really long time. they might have no feelings because they have been working for a long time and when they have been treated poorly and meanly so they are used to having no feelings.

On the other hand if the person is in poverty for a long time as i said they might still feel pain. The person might still feel pain because the have been treated very badly so they are sad and mad at the same time so they can still feel pain. Everyone feels pain sometime in thier life unless their like a superhumanhappybot or something. They might even still feel pain if thier working in sweatshops because the get smacked and hit all the time.

This quote is related onto slavery because there is a kid that is not doing his job so the master told one of his workers to get the whip and torture him but, T-W In this world that would not happen most likely the person would just get fired or let go.

"My people must go free" supports the theme because the definition of free means Not under the control or in the power of another; able to act or be done as one wishes. Which can also be interpreted as not being forced to do something because you look different. “In two years you have transformed forty slaves into free men and women” this also supports the theme I chose because transformed means change and free means to not be under the control or in the power of another/to be able to act or be done as one wishes.

The lesson I have learned is to stand up for what you believe in and that anything you put your mind to you can achieve it. An example would be how in the beginning of the book harriet was trying to find a way to stand up to her masters and runaway using the underground railroad. In the middle of the book harriet transformed forty people to free men and women. Harriet set her goal and no matter what it took she did it and by doing that harriet achieved her goal.

“Rashid liked learning numbers. It was like knowing a secret. Something magical. Something powerful.
I think my is related to the theme Rights. I think its related to the theme Rights because very human has the right for education, but ovbiously thats somthing rashid doesnt have. Also i think that he would like to be able to have an education because when he says "I like learning numbers" You learn numbers at school. I have a connection to this because even alot of people say "i hate school" if we didnt have were would we be now?

I think this quote has to do with the theme slavery because when the master says to Rashid to whip the camel and if he doesnt he will kill you, but since we dont live in a thrid world contry if that happend you would get fired or arrested.

“When the lives and the rights of children are at stake, there must be no silent witnesses.” This means that just because you see child labour happening, doesn’t mean you should ignore it. In other words, when you see children who are not getting their rights, you should try to help. People all around the world know about child labour but usually don’t try to make a difference because they think that they can’t do anything about it. This quote relates to our book because not many people from the city know about Scar’s factory and it’s hidden. This also reminds me of Iqbal. In the book “Iqbal”, he works in a factory but the police don’t care the people don’t care, and the leaders don’t care. The only was who was trying to change that was Eshan Khan. And he ended up changing a lot of things in Pakistan. Gopal is trying to escape and tell people about the factory that he and his friends are trapped in. I learned that we may not know it, but there is a lot of child labour happening in the world and we can change it if we want.

“Why do we have to pay the price of poverty. We didn’t create poverty, adults did.” I think this is coming from a child and it is powerful to me because it is saying that the kids are suffering for their parents. In other words, the kids are wondering why they have to work for their parents. I think that they also mean that adults started poverty, by maybe not-working, child labour, etc. This relates to “Boys without names” because Gopal got tricked into child labour and has to work there for his childhood. This also related to the poverty cycle. It relate because the poverty cycle is simply, your born, you work, you starve, you get married, have kids, then die, and on and on and on. The poverty cycle will almost never end.

By the way, I didn't know we had to use quotes from the book....

This quote is related to my theme because Parvana was scared about becoming a boy, but her mother said she is still one of the smartest girls in Afghanistan. I think the message that the author is trying to get at is changes can be hard, but all has a chance to work out.
Paragraph 2
This quote is related to my theme because it talks about how her father would have made more money. I think the message is that someone may be able to do better then you, but you are still good in your own way. I have a connection to my tournament this weekend, where we didn't come in first, but we were still one if the best teams out there, so we are good in our own way

“Don’t open your mouth unless I ask you a question.” This quote is related to my theme because Scar isn’t letting Gopal say anything unless he is asked a question. That is related to slavery because he isn’t allowed to speak his own mind or else he will get beaten. In my opinion this shouldn’t be allowed because no one should be able to be treated like that. One T-T I had was when I was reading Iqbal and and someone spoke out loud and Karim told the boss and they got punished because when you are in child labour/slavery you are forbidden to talk. In my opinion the author's message to us is that no one should be treated like that and everyone should be able to speak their own mind. And lastly, no one should ever be in slavery or poverty because those things are just horrible and no one should experience that.

“Scar man hits me again. Stay there you rat.” This quote is related to my theme because my theme is slavery and this quote relates to it because scar is hitting Gopal just because he was trying to move. In my opinion think scar is a very very mean person because he doesn't care at all about anyone else except for himself, and that is why he is keeping those children in slavery because all he thinks about is money and not their health, their family nothing. One T-T I had was when I was reading Iqbal and when ever someone did one little mistake Hussain would take them into the tomb. In my opinion I think the authors message to us about the theme is no one should ever be that mean to anyone and no one should be punished like that and especially there should be no slavery in the world. Also I think the author is trying to tell us what is going on around us and what people have to go through every day with almost nothing to survive off of.

My quote, “With automatic obedience the four children trotted to the store and emerged a moment later, their helmets on their heads, their arms laden with ropes and cloth” on page 126 is about Freedom. Whenever the master tells them to do something, they do it because they do not want to get in trouble. They don’t get the freedom to say “no”. Me, I do not always listen to what my mom says, because i get the freedom, but because of that freedom, I get in trouble. But, if they knew what your Human Rights were, they would have probably gotten out of the factory now.

On page 95, this quote, “it seemed as if he was being slowly cut adrift floating into a new life becoming someone else the boy Yasser and leaving the real Rashid behind” is also related to freedom because he is forgetting his real life because he doesn’t have the freedom he did have when he was younger so he starts forgetting his past about “Rashid”.

"Why not Everyman" I thought this quote was powerful because it means that why doesn't Everyman work than just some people. I think the authors message is that why doesn't every man work.

"She bought a silver gun for Christmas" this quote is powerful because I think she bought the gun for food and I think she bought it for if she sees someone like a guard she can maybe shoot them.

RESPONSE TWO:

The first quote is “ But the owner said he wanted to rent to a man not two girls.” This quote is related to the theme “Equality” because the people all said they only wanted a man which is not treating girls equally to men because at the time girls had no power. The characters involved are Rose and Maureen because they can’t find a house to live in. My connection is when miss Tera Teng came she told us about how women were not treated equally back along time ago and this is when that was. I think that the author is trying to say that all people should be treated equally not just men.

The second quote is “ I do not want a sweatshop in my house.” This quote relates to equality because elsa and her daughters are richer than Rose and her family and they need money to survive but they are trying to work but Elsa is getting mad at them and they cannot make money to survive. Rose and her family are affected because they can’t make money to survive. The author is trying to say that you need to be nice to people who might not have as much money because they are struggling to survive.

‘ “What’s home?” Puppo asked, bewildered.’ This quote is very powerful because Puppo doesn’t know what home is. He is five years old and has been at the uzba for a very long time, so it makes sense that he would forget. But why has he stayed for that long? When the Sheikh asked if they’re families at home are making good use of the money they’re making, this was Puppo’s answer. I have a connection to a book I read (T-T) called Iqbal. All the other children in that book have forgotten their families. But Iqbal hasn’t, because he says that every night, before he goes to sleep, he goes through every one of his memories, one by one, so he doesn’t forget them. I think that the author is trying to tell us that we need to stop poverty and child labour because kids have been in the business for so long that they forget what home means.

‘ “You don’t get anything else all day other than a half piece of bread on race days.” ’ I think what we all say when we hear this quote is: “But why?” And here’s why. When the children eat more, they get heavier. And of course, when something is heavier, they go slower. The camel owner, Syed Ali, is crazy about winning, so he forbids them from having any more that a half piece of bread on race days. This quote is very powerful because it shows what kids all around the world are going through. I have a connection to this from a video I watched with a girl who lived in India and was very poor. Because she was so poor she hardly got any food and had to go away to a brick making factory. I think that these characters are very similar because they both go through the same thing. They both do child labour, and they both hardly get any food.

Paragraph 1

Child Labour is real and this takes the cake. In the book “Boy’s Without Names,” a man named Scar by the main protagonist said to Gopal, "Stay there you rat." Hearing this is painful but to see this in real life is just outrageous. Gopal is just a regular boy but was put in debt by his family and cannot afford to pay it back. Gopal only moved, he was drugged and sold by a person that he thought he could trust who called himself Jantin but only used that name to Trick Gopal. Surprise surprise, it happens in real life too. What I percept from this quote is that you can do something about this. One lesson could be learnt from this, stuff happens but you really are something to stop it.

Paragraph 2
”...I’ll call you cockroach if I want. There are no names in this place, you understand?” Scar said this to Gopal just because Gopal asked why they couldn’t say real names in their factory that he is working in. Similar to my first paragraph, the world is getting worse and better, we advance in technology and degrade in humanity. The lesson/message I got from this is people are cruel. Cruelty around the world is a mess. Some may call us agents of change while others think of us as kids, I call us students, we are limited but we still will do something.

This quote relates to my theme (poverty) because they are cutting her hair because they need her to look like a boy and if she looks like a boy then that means she could go outside and get groceries and if they could get groceries then that means they could have food and not be starving and be in poverty. The characters in this scene of the book are Parvana, Parvana's mom and Ms Weeria. This is a text to text connection because this relates to the book Iqbal because the families and the people in Iqbal barely have any food and they would do anything to have food basically. I think the message is to be thankful for what you have because if you are not thankful for what you have then there is always someone else who would cherish it.

In this part of the book, Rose and Gussie are talking about how woman in America could just protest about their rights. Gussie was explaining how she got into jail and also how their were a group of women joining her in the protest. When I read this quote on page 139, it just screamed equality and right to me. I don’t think this quote would be powerful if you don’t think of it the correct way. You really do have to think to understand. Anyway, this quote shows how back in the day, in some places women aren’t treated the same way. When people like Rose hear that you can do something like that, she was quite shocked. I’m sure many other women could relate and connect to this issue, because it still goes on to this day.

Many people might wonder why I think this quote is powerful. In my perspective this quotes theme is poverty. At that part of the novel, a girl working at the sweatshop was telling Rose how her dad use to work as a teacher and got paid lots of money. But after they moved to America the only job he had was to work at a clothing factory and sweep up scraps on the floor. It’s very hard to hear that something like this could happen to an innocent person who works hard barely gets enough money to survive. I think the main reason that her father didn’t get a job as a teacher in New York, is just because their new to the country. In that way, this quote can also relate to the theme “Discrimination”. This book connects to Iqbal in a way because, he started with a family and living at a farm, but later they had to sell Iqbal to work at a sweatshop.

One quote that is related to the theme is "Where could you possibly find work? Was it a sweatshop? The characters involved are Rose and Trudy. Trudy is basically saying that since Rose is from ireland, she is not good enough to find a good job in America. A text to media connection I had was from a video was there was a homeless guy and he said that people were not treating him well just because he was poor and people were telling him get a job you lazy bum. I think the message from the author is that we are the same and treat others with the kind of respect that you want to be treated with.

The second quote that I thought related to my theme equality was "Walter saw these immigrants running a sweatshop in my home." The characters that were directly involved were Rose, Trudy, and Walter. This happened when Trudy walked into the house when Trudy, Ma, and Maureen were helping Rose with her job of making flower stemsand when they walked in Trudy screamed andthen she fell to the ground. She wokeup after Walter was goneand said Walter saw these immigrants running a sweatshop in my home. He'll never want to marry me now. A connection I had was was a text to world connection and it happened in my neighboorhood. There was a young kid and there was a person who could not speak english. This person went to sell something to this kids family and they offered him 20 dollars for a painting but he did not know what 20 dollars was. When this guy started walking away this kid started laughing and saying that he is so dumb that he does not know what 20 dollars is. I think that the authors message is treat others like you would like to be treated.

I think this means that the owner of this apartment does not want a woman renting his because as said earlier in the book a woman must have a man to pass and both of these to me mean that at this time a lot of people were sexist and I think that because a woman doesn't make too much money. The man is easier to get a job and I think the man has more skills.

"I do not want a woman that works in a sweat shop in my house"

I think this is talking about how they are making roses and Elsa's family is very wealthy and they never want to see someone doing that type of things in their house. Also it ruins their dads reputation. (T-S) this reminds me because I have had Chinese immigrants live in our house and it does not have to do with the quote but it is similar.

Well I think bombs are a big part of war and since me theme is war I thought this would be one of the best quotes i found so i thought it would be the best to use.This has to do with every one in the book because they are all their and they have all experienced it.I think the author is trying to tell us how bad a place kabul is to live in and maybe how we should try and help them.I have a TtoT connection I forget the book name but in it when the father+mother gets taken away a girls has to get a job

One of the themes in my book is Freedom.
This theme is related to my topic because of the quote” “Enough Recess!” get back to work”. This
is a wow quote to me because many people have to go out and work for their family’s in afghanistan and they don’t go home unless they have enough food to feed their with. For example Parvana is always going out and supporting the family she never gets a break until late at night. Many children are forced to work because there fathers can’t provide for them because their father is dead or in jail for something they didn’t do. This is a T-W connection because there is a lot of child labour in the world today and people don’t realize how much goes on. In every single second someone is taken away to go work for their family’s.

Another Theme that is related to my book is equality.

This quote is related to my topic "You still have more education than most people in Afghanistan", because only some people in Afghanistan get the proper education but now they have no equality rights there. All women are not allowed to go to school or go into shops and are forced to be covered up from head to toe. Here in Canada we have equality rights because all women are allowed to go to school and shop anywhere but in Afghanistan everything is different and people are treated like their worthless.

The reason i pick “I will run away some day” as one of the quotes is because i thought it was very heroic and brave to say that and actually succeed and i also thought it was a good message to kids to say something and stick with it no matter how long it takes and how hard it is.I also chose it because it was an encouragement to all kid that you can do anything if you believe but you can’t fly so don’t jump off a building and be surprised that you aren't floating in middle but if you do you have powers this is why i picked i will run away some day as one of my quotes.

"It's one thing to have working girls in a picket line, but when you have society ladies, now that's a news story." This is related to my theme because Gussie is talking about how she went out to fight for women’s rights and how most people wouldn’t listen to just a bunch of working girls, but they had some political ladies so some people were actually listening to them for a change. It relates to many of the riots that happened due to women’s rights back then and even though these are fictional characters they speak of true experiences. The author probably wants to tell us about the troubles of these girls and that if you try you can fight against the system and do what you want without everyone telling you to act nicer and to stay quiet all the TIME.

“I already have one loud mouthed girl here.” The shop owner was talking about his daughter, Rose was having a hard time finding somewhere to stay since all the shopkeepers wanted to rent out to men and not women. The shopkeeper let them stay but he was talking about his daughter Gussie and she was loud mouthed because she joined riots for rights. I don’t have any connections here except for someone complaining to someone for having a certain tone of voice apparently and that they should change it when you clearly don’t want to.
