FRIDAY: Monitoring Comprehension

Today, students learned more reading strategies. They learned more about 'MONITORING COMPREHENSION'. They learned some tips on what they can do to monitor their comprehension and some of the tips included: ask a friend/teacher/parent, use text features, stop and think, slow down, re-read, look in a dictionary, do some research, etc. The students learned that any time they use any of these skills or anything really to monitor their comprehension, it helps deepen their understanding of what they are reading. All of us do these things as we read, but we are not always aware we are doing them.

IMPORTANT: WATER POLO
- Parents, the water polo program will cost students $15 for the program. This consists of several classes at school and at the pool. I will upload the actual permission form this weekend once the website allows me to. Please read it and send the money with your son/daughter on Monday. If there are any issues with providing the funds, please email me directly. Nobody will be denied this learning opportunity.

1.) MATH 6: Chapter 7 lesson 6 worksheet and textbook questions #1-7
2.) MATH 7: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

When reading the daily post on our class site, what do you do to 'MONITOR YOUR COMPREHENSION'?
For example, which tips do you use that you learned about in class? (Read the daily blurb if you can't remember all the tips in your bat belt or tool kit!).
1 - List 3 monitoring comprehension tools you use on a regular basis when doing your daily PAR work.
2 - Also, explain how all three help you improve your understanding of what you need to do on our class site.
3 - Be sure to give 3 clear examples.
4 - Comment on one student's response.
5 - Respond to any comments you receive.

Normally when I read the class wesite, I reread a lot. I also tend to stop and think, ask questions, etc.
These help me improve my work on the class site because when I reread I get a better understanding of what the purpose is like what the criteria is. When I stop an think it's like "ok... now I see it" (thats how I feel when I stop and think)
. Thirdly I like to ask questionns as I mentioned above. At first when I learned about this stratagy it seemed kind of akward to me, but then I got the hang of it. When I ask questions I get more of a "feel" for what the purpose is. Say I do not what "Hi" means (but I do it i just an example) then I can ask the question what does hi mean and I get a better understanding.

My game is almost done! Using html and css I embeded it into a website I made called www.GalaxyRun.weebly.com It is not published yet though it will soon when the game is finished. I also made a android app that says hello world and installed it but it is not available on the google play store :(

@ Azbo - No problem! Watch the ones that are relevant to the concepts you have learned in math. Some of them are for the grade 6's and some are for the grade 7's. It is a good resource for all of you!

When I read the daily post I usually re-read, ask questions, and look at the words around what I just read. Re-reading helps me understand because if I don't get what a sentence is saying the first time, I'll just re-read it slowly to get a more clear vision in my head of what it's about. Asking questions help me have a more visual thought in my head. When I don't get a word, I'll read around it so I can get an idea of what the word means.

Usally I Moniter my Comprehention by re reading the website when I don't understand. I check back on the P.A.R to make sure I'm doing it right and than I read through others paragraphs.

I monitor my comprehension burr reading the website when I can understand. This can help me so that I can make my post better. I always check back to the posts response to make sure I'm doing it right and than if I still don't understand I can look at other people's posts to get a better understanding.

when I do the P.A.R. I stop to think, I re-read, and I visualize, all helping me completely understand all of the P.A.R.

When I got on the post today I immediately monitored and comprehensively looked at the first 2 points of the P.A.R because it did not make sense to me so I reread and thats when I thought to do this.
1. Reread
2. Look at the words around the word.
3. I ask my partner, teacher, or the internet what the definition of the word is or what it means in that pacific sentence.
These 3 strategies help me because sometimes says a word in a sentence and in that sentence I don't know what it means but in general I do. Also these 3 things help me alot when Mr.Hong gives us an assignment to look up the words we did not understand and we highlighted in a booklet because some of the words in the definition I don't understand at all so I look them up in google.

I reread because sometimes I can miss important information.
I slow down because sometimes I read to fast and get confused.
I ask questions because sometimes I don't understand something.

1.) I find myself re-reading the class website a lot

2.)If I don't understand something Mr.Hong wrote I usually re-read and ask myself questions and if I still don't understand I will ask my parents for their help.

3.) If there is a long post I am starting to use the new reading strategies we learned in class to help me improve and help me understand more.

I reread because I always forget what I just read.
I sometimes need to stop and think so I can understand what I'm reading.
I also slow down because sometimes I read to fast.

When I got to the class website I checked the videos out the did the P.A.R i Always reread this is what I do
1 Reread so I understand what I read
2 stop and think to check my understanding
3 read ahead to understand if i do not know what a word means

The toothing that I do when I work on my P.A.R. is reread. I do this so I can understand the criteria better. My strategies are reread to figure out what I am reading,use my background knowledge from previous lessons and ask questions so I know what I am doing. I use these strategies get stuck on the post and not do it.

When I go on the daily post a response I use a lot of re reading and stop and think, because somtimes their are things that are hard to understand. 3 stratagems I use on the daily post are re read, stop and think and slow down. Those stratagems help me because I go to fast or don't under stand something for the post.

1.) When I read the class blog I reread a lot when I'm doing the daily post a response in case I forget a step in my P.A.R.

2.) When I read the class blog I stop and think so that I can process what I am reading. For example, I always read to fast and then I realize that I have no idea what I just read and have to go back and stop and think while I read (so I understand).

3.) When I read the class blog I use visualizing. For example, in today's post Mr. Hong mentioned that the different ways of monitoring comprehesion can be like tools in your "bat belt", and I can use visulization to visulize someone wearing a bat belt wearing all the monitoring comprehension tools.

When I do my daily P.A.R, I use three monitoring comprehension tools.

The tools I use when I am doing/ reading the daily P.A.R:

1.) Re-read.
This helps me do the daily P.A.R. Why? Well, because if I don't understand what to do I usually re-read again to understand more clearly. Re-reading also helps me follow criteria better. How? For instance if I was working on a assignment when I was following the steps, I re-read again to make sure I did everything correctly. And lastly, if I did not understand a word I would re-read again to have a better understanding on what the word means.

2.)Ask questions.
When I read the daily P.A.R I ask questions if I did not understand, I also ask questions on what is due for homework. Like for example, sometimes I forgot what page I have to do and so I ask the class website. Lastly, I ask questions if I don't know what to do for the instructions.

3.) I stop and think.
I usually stop and think if I don't know what the word means so that I can understand it better. I also stop and think if I am stuck on something that does not make sense to me, I do this by reading the words around the word/ sentence that I am stuck on. Lastly, I stop and think to make sure I know what I'm reading about.

When I read the daily post on our class site I usually use re read, stop and think, and slow down. Re reading helps me to understand better because sometimes I miss the details. Stop and think helps me to understand the parts I am stuck. Slow down helps me because sometimes I read so fast.

Every time I go on the class blog, I monitor my comprehension by using the Reading Purposes I use when reading, or set a purpose of why I am reading the blog. Why this helps me is to help me understand. Just as we would read a poem, or do our messy thinking on a picture, I would always set a purpose such as:
- Take a short glance at it
- Visualize
- Predict
And other stuff to it.

I also use the re-reading strategy all the time to know what the next question would be next, and to understand. Why do I re-read? To help me understand, and if I keep forgetting what the question was, I would scroll back up the page and re-read it over and over and over again to understand it.

My last strategy I use is by asking a parent such as my mom, to help me understand what parts I don't understand. For example, I would ask her what Mr. Hong, means on the blog if he said something confusing to me. But sometimes she would be busy so I would post a question on the blog of what Mr. Hong means by this or that.

Some of the montoring my comrehention skills I use is rereading, looking at text features, asking questions. Rereading helps me undesand because, sometimes I don't undersand the instructions of what I need to do on the "P.A.R." so I read it again several times. Looking at the text features help me sometimes too because, when the words are bolded it maks me pay more attention to what I'm reading. Asking questions help me undersand becaause, when I ask on the blog usually someone aswers me so it halps me understand a question I'm stuck on.

I usr rereading a lot. It helps me when I read to fast it helps me understand what I missed. I also slow down a lot. I like to read slowly because it really helps me understand what I'm reading. Sometimes I ask questions to my self I wonder what is going to happen this makes my reading more fun.

1)Reread- If I see a word that doesn't make sense then I cant reread the words around it, the sentence, or the paragraph.
2)Set a purpose- If something doesn't make sense I can keep reading and setting a purpose for each time I read and it might make sense.
3)Text features- Sometimes if you look at the title and write down what it means it usually will all start to make sense.
All the strategies can help me because if I need to respond to someone and I don't understand what the person is saying then I can use strategies and figure it out.

When I read my post a response I use...

1.) Reread- I reread the post multiple times to make sure I have included all the details I needed for my post a response.

2.)Text features- I use test features to spot the words Mr. Hong has put in bold for us to see so we know what we have to do.

3.)Stop and think- I use this strategy when I read to fast or don't understand a word I stop and think and then it makes sense.

All these come in handy and sometime I don't even know I'm using them. They help me so I don't get stuck on stuff and understand it better.
