Friday: Set Your Goals as High as You Fly Your Kites

We had a great time making and flying our kites on Friday. Using different mediums for art is always an exciting thing! Art is a very important part of your education. We also learned how kites connect people around the world! There is much culture behind these flying objects.

In addition to this, we learned more about gorillas and how they behave in the wild. It was interesting watching the National Geographic documentary. I'm sure all of you were you thinking about Ivan and made a connection with the silverback you saw. Gorillas are clearly very intelligent and emotional animals. We will look deeper into this next week when we start Science!

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE (3 parts): Based on what you have learned about character development. What can you tell us about....
A.) Ivan's character
B.) Mack's character.
Explain using examples from the beginning of the story up to where we finished on Friday. I e-mailed the audio file of the read aloud to all students who were not present today. If you did not receive it, let me know and I will share it with you on Google Drive or by email.
C.) Write down 2 deep questions and answers based on the criteria you have learned for creating deep questions.

Math 7 - Any unfinished work.

3.) FUN MATH 6/7 HOMEWORK - Mrs. Van gave me a great website for you all to try out. It has been baffling me because I can't seem to figure out how it works! Visit this website and see if you can figure out how the 'FLASH MIND READER' works. The crystal ball can read your mind! There will be a prize for students who are able to figure out how it works. Post any questions/comments here.

4.) Language Arts / E-Folio - Do your best to complete as much of your 'PASSION TRAILERS' as possible. Use the criteria points we came up with together in class, as well you can refer to the Guideline/Criteria sheet that I shared with all of you on your Google Drive. You should have all received an email from me with the shared document. If you didn't, be sure to email me RIGHT AWAY so that I can send it to you. Also, if you're having trouble logging into your accounts, refer to the end of the shared document as I have included detailed information.

I think its all about the addition. If you look at all the symbols, there are basically duplicates. It knows which you are supposed to pick from common addition. If you choose a number to look at, example 54. If you keep on clicking try again, the symbol will always be the same one on 54 as what is says you are guessing, acting like a "Mind reader".

@Sandy Good observation about 54. But did you follow their formula for using the number you pick to calculate the final number (the number you need for the symbol)?

Every few numbers there is a certain symbol, that is guessed. I tried to calculate almost every number and it always leaded to "That symbol". I'm going to think for a little bit and see if I can figure out the formula so I will need to think a little deeper. Thank you for the reply! :) It's helping me.

A.) Ivan in the reading today showed me more in his personality like how he can be mean but chooses not to most of the time, he also showed that he is restricted on the things he sees so he has a thing I call artist block. (Means he can't decide on what to draw because he drew anything he could think of.)

B.) Mack showed today that he is still a person, just that he is normally mean only to animals, what proves my point is that he throws things a animals and doesn't care about it but gives money to George because of his wife but also could just make Julia give crayons to Ivan to make more money.

C.) 1.) Do you think Mack is really a bad person or just plain mean only to animals? If not or so, why?

2.) Do you think Bob is really decided on if he wants to join the circus or is he hesitant? If not or so, why?

A.) Today we learned more about Ivan. We learned that Ivan thinks about his family, ex.) He said that his mom would not be happy when he called the humans slime balls.

B.) We learned more about Mack. We know now that he can be nice at times, but is greedy and all he wants is money. But he may be an alcoholic because he drinks right in front of the janitor and all the animals.

C1.) In my opinion, I think that the kids were throwing rocks at Ivan because in the year the book takes place. I think that us ( humans ) are not caring about the world and taking advantages of things. - ex.) sawdust everywhere.

C2.) In my opinion, I think that Mack is sort of an alcoholic. Because in the book, it says that Mack is often drinking out of a brown bottle, which in most cases are beer bottles.

@ Everyone - Don't forget to respond to your Global Read Aloud partners and ask them questions about themselves (Group Introductions) and ask them deep thinking questions in the 'PREDICTIONS' section.

Also, I just went through your 'LEARNING JOURNEY' e-folios and they are starting to take shape. I especially have enjoyed looking at the creativity of the division 4 students! It was really neat to see that some of you added your QR codes to your sites.

When I was teaching in Japan, they used QR codes for bus schedules, advertisements, websites, etc. This allowed for quick access to information and it streamlined the information for the people. I often see business cards and company posters.

Does anyone know what QR codes stands for?

Ivan's: I think we have learned a lot about Ivan's character, since the beginning of the book, at first his character was portrayed as a calm, un nerved gorilla taken from is family when he was young, but as we indulged deeper into the book, it showed he was more human like then any of the real humans that surrounded him at the Big Top mall, as all humans that had ever cared for him were money driven soulless creatures that had no respect for him, and as we went on, he became even more like us, he had wishes, and understandings, and he was sad, and he had many reasons to be, but he did the best he could, to not get kicked out like his friend Stella was when she was in the big circus before she was sold off to Mack. But he was also happy at times, a sad happy, but happy nonetheless, like when Julia came to visit with her father George since he was the after-hours janitor, and when he got new crayons, but those were short times, and he went back to being stuck in his domain, patient as stone.

Mack: At first I thought Mack was okay, for being a clown and all, creepy clown O.O, he seemed like just a guy trying to make a living, even if its not even in the BEST way, but once again, going further in the book we discover his dark side and how he only cares for money, abusing the animals like when he threw the soda can at the bird, almost hitting it, and the birds wings were clipped, and Ivan said in part of a book the Mack would hold a "Brown bottle" which could of course have been beer, or some kind of alcohol, and I have a prediction that Mack COULD be a alcoholic, or it's just because hes not getting much business.

Q: Is Mack a Alcoholic?

A: Possibly, Ivan does say that he often sees Mack with a brown bottle, but he might just be doing that because of the lack of business or he might have his own personal problems, that we will find later in the book.

Q: Is Julia's mother sick/deceased?

A: Most likely, it said in the book that Julia's mother became pale and started slouching, soon after not returning with Julia and her father anymore, so its likely shes is probably in the hospital ill/dying, or has already passed.

Ivan - Firstly, Ivan is a silverback gorilla and lives in big top mall in his little domain with his friends Bob and Sella which are not his kind Stella is an elephant and bob is a dog. Secondly, Ivan was shown as a scary powerful silverback but Ivan said that gorillas are as pataint as stones also, Ivan said he is not scary at all he is a calm gorilla in a cage. I think that Ivan is a funny guy. He makes sarcastic jokes, and they are very funny like, I eat dinner twice.
On the other side I think that Mack just wants to get the money and doesn't care about the animals. He is selfish and is a bad influence.

Why is Mack so selfish?
Maybe he is selfish because he was once an employe and his boss was selfish. He is just mad about the experience. It could be something else too, that's why it's a deep question.

I know I asked this before but I think it's important, Does Ivan like his job, why or why not? I think he doesn't because he keeps dreaming about the wild.

I think that ivan is funny yet not happy. Most of the time he makes jokes about humans.

I think that although Ivan is a mighty silverback he's the most calm in the book so far, and I've also learned that Ivan makes a couple of jokes sometimes and that he seems sad because he has no family to protect. I also learned what me-balls are.

Mack is a clown who own and performs with Ivan in shows and he only likes money. He can sometimes be bad and he thinks that Ivans not so amazing or cute any more.

If you were in Ivan how would you have reacted if a clown told you that you're no longer cute.

If I were Ivan I would be sad and I might get so mad that I would hit Mack.

Every time you choose any two digit number and you add the two digits together and subtract that from the original number, the answer will ALWAYS be 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 or 81 which are all multiples of nine. On every new chart the symbols are the same for those numbers, plus they gave some of the other numbers that symbol to try to mess you up. a.) I believe Ivan's character is calm, patient, and easy- going. It doesn't take much to please him, but it also does not take much to break him. Although he may seem happy most of the time, he is not. This is obvious. No one would be happy in a cage with an unnatural habitat, and humans snickering and teasing at them, (And sometimes mistreating). And to be surrounded by all of this for 27 years and counting, is just a no-brainer. Anyways, back to Ivan. Ivan is a Silverback gorilla with many hopes and dreams.

b.) I still think Ivan is a greedy, ungrateful, selfish, no-good clown. All he cares about is money, and if he doesn't get it, he becomes a completely different person. Also, it seems like he is a very ungrateful person. He expects Ivan to be this magnificent, perfect gorilla, but really he's not. Everyone has flaws, and you can't just be so demanding of a 27 year old (Or more) gorilla. Also, I think Mack is an alcoholic. It seems he tries to drown his worries, sorrows, and pains by drinking beer, and that isn't a way to cure a problem.

c.)

Question1- Do you think Ivan will get better at his drawings? Why and how?

Answer1- I think Ivan will get better at his drawings. Why I think this is because of all the drama going on right now with the money issues, and how basically everyone is intending that Ivan is a waste of space. But, I think Ivan will prove himself worthy to live, and that he is not a waste of space. How I think he will do this is, he will start watching Julia more carefully on the techniques she uses to draw.

Question2- Do you think Mack will go out of business? Why or how?

Answer2- I think Mack has a possibility of going out of business for so many reasons.

1. I think he will get caught by passing customers seeing him abusing/mistreating the animals. He will then be billed a fine, and since he will not be able to pay for it, he will be sent to jail. In addition to this, all the animals will be set free in the wild where they belong.
2. I think Mack will run out of money that he will decide to move onto a better career, and he will sell the animals to another business.
3. (A happy version of point #2)
Mack has a change of heart, and he will set the animals free to live their lives. Then, he will move on to a different career, to pursue his dream job.

b.) Mack is well selfish and greedy maybe an alcoholic but his true self is kind but he does not show it often like when he gave the janitor money for the janitor's little girl

Ivans character - I think Ivan is a really creative animal because he draws alot of things that people dont see but he does. Ivan is alway positive about things. He has been in his cage for 9,655 (27 years)
Macks character - I think Mack is not very nice. He always drinks from a brown bottle , which is beer.

A.) I think in the beginning of the novel Ivan seemed very lonely and quiet. He actually is but it seemed like Ivan had no humor inside of him. Until in one chapter he threw a "Me Ball" at a couple of kids. He is a very creative gorilla and loves to listen to stories that Stella tells him.

B.) Mack is the owner and the clown at the mall. He only cares about money and is a greedy guy. I think that inside him theres a kind spot but, he just doesn't show it.

Question:
How do you think Ivan react when the new baby elephant comes?

Answer: In my opinion I think that Ivan will take care of the little baby elephant.
