Friday: To This Day.....

It was an emotional Language Arts class today after we watched the 'TO THIS DAY PROJECT' video. To this day, I have never seen so many students become so emotional from the deep connections they were able to make from something they read or saw in class. There weren't too many dry eyes in the classroom when the video finished playing. The video was created by Shane Koyczan. The timing couldn't have been better with 'Anti-Bullying' day right around the corner. He is a poet and a writer who grew up in BC and has won numerous poetry slam competitions. He is well known for his performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

In PE, the students started in-line skating today and reviewed how to use the safety pads/equipment. Many of the students quickly picked up how to skate with the rollerblades.

1.) MATH 6: All corrections if you received your test. Your parents must also sign it. Div 4, you will receive your tests on Monday.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) SHOWCASED BLOG:

Visit Liam's Learning Journey and post some questions, comments, feedback, etc (minimum 4)

3.) LA: Continue editing/revising your writes on the 'TO THIS DAY PROJECT' video.

4.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

List at least 2 examples of a physical change and 2 examples of a chemical change.
Explain why each is a physical or chemical change by using the clues you researched with your groups.

Phyical change: A example of a physical change is when you cut a carrot it is a physical change because its not forming a new substance so it doesnt change, that's why its not a chemical change.

Chemical change: A example of a chemical change is tea because you are using boling hot water and when the substance get hot then they start to move faster, also gas production.

Chemical Change
1. In a landfill the food rots and once rotten can't be turned

back to something edible. It also releases a horrible odour,

gases that are being released are signs of chemical changes. And

there can be mold growing.
2.Boiling Eggs is a chemical change because the colour changes, a

new odor is given off and it's not reversible because after you

cook something you can't turn it back to uncooked food.

Physical Change
1.Melting Chocolate Ice cream: It's a physical change because it

is reversible and no signs of a chemical change are given off.
2.Chopping Carrots: This is a physical change which is not

reversible. Also none of the signs of a chemical change happens.

An example of a physical change is cutting a carrot because it does not change color or create a new substance. Another is melting ice cream because there is no new substance or color and no signs showing that it is.

An example of a chemical change is boiling eggs because there is a new color and a new scent is given off. A second example is tea because there is gas produced and boiling hot water is included.

1.) Cutting grass - This is a phyical change because the color does not change because you are cutting the particles and it can grow back to what ever length it was before because of the particles expanding in water.

2.) Cutting hair - This is a physical change because it does not change color because you are cutting it and it does not give off gas because the particles are not changes.

3.) A can rusting - This is a chemical change because the water changes the color and it will have a different volume because the rust adds on to the top of the iron.

4.) garbage decomposing. - This is a chemical change because of the gases being released because of the pressure of the ground on top of it. Also, the garbage gives off a bad smell which is the smell of methane gas.

PHYSICAL CHANGE -
When you cut a banana in pieces it's a physical change. Because it does not change colour, and it does not change scent. It's also a non reversible physical change because you can't put together a banana after it is cut.

When a ice cube melts, it's a physical change. Because it does not change scent, and it doesn't change scent. Also, it is a reversible change. Because you can just freeze the melted water back into an ice cube.

CHEMICAL CHANGE -
A landfill is a chemical change. Because fruit changes colour when it rots, and the scent changes. The reason the scent changes is because all the gasses of rotten food come together to make one stinky scent.

When you boil an egg it is a chemical change. Because the scent changes and the colour changes.

Physical change:

Physical change: A ice cube is melting it is not changing chemical it is just changing shape and from solid to liquid.
A peice of fruit is being chopped it is not changing subtance just changing shape and solid to liquid.

Chemical change:
A egg goes from raw to cooked it is changing substance color and more is being changed and can not be switched back to a raw egg again.
A rotten food cannot be non rotten after it has already being rotten.

Physical change

Carrot chopped is a physical change because you can't put it back together also They have a changed color and a new substance is formed.
Melting Ice cream is a physical change because the Ice Cream is reversible by putting it in the freezer.

Chemical change

Tea is chemical change. The reason why is that the tea leaves have melted and they have mixed with the water.

Garbage dump is a chemical change because the garbage leaves behind this waste which is chemicals and the food/garbage have a bad smell.

Physical Changes -
Chopping Carrots: You can't morph the carrot back together or make it awhole again. Also,

Ice Cream: When the ice cream melts it is reversible because you can freeze it. The colour does not change either.

Chemical Changes -
Boiling eggs: Boiling eggs is a chemical change because you can't make a boiled egg back to the raw and the colour changes.

Land fill: I think that this is a chemical change because it can not be reversed (eg. it will be hard to put the garbageė back to the owners houses.) Also, the smell changes because it used to be in a bag.

Next time try explaining how each of them are either chemical or physical change. For example, How is rotting food a chemical change? I know that you understand everything, but you need to do a little bit more explaining.

Physical changes:
1) Cutting up wood. Nothing changes except it is non reversible when you cut a peice of wood. So that means its physical.
2) Ripping up paper. Like cutting a a tree nothing happens just its non reversible. So it's just a non reversible physical change.
Chemical Change:
1) Rotting food in a landfill is chemical because the colour and scent changes.
2) A can rusting is a chemical change because the colour changes so it is chemical.

-Ice cube melting: dosn't change colour, and it is still water but in a different form.
-Cutting grass: this is a physical change because it is not changing colour, bubbling, and cutting grass is the exact same thing but it is just getting smaller.

chemical change:
-Creating tea: this is a chemical change because if you add boiling water and tea leaves it changes colour, and changes taste.
Rotting can: this is a chemical change because it creates a new substance.

physical changes-
1.) Breaking a bottle is a physical change because when you break it the bottle is not changing colour or bubbling but it is just changing form.
2.) Melting an ice cube is also a physical change when you melt an ice cube it is not bubbling or changing colour it is simply just changing form.
chemical change-
1.) Fruit rotting it a chemical change because it is creating a new substance.
2.) Also boiling an egg is a chemical change when you boil an egg it changes colour and smell.

2. Boiling water - water molecules are forced away from each other when the liquid changes to vapour
Chemical change
1. A change that results in the form of a new chemical substance.

~Physical Changes~
One example of a physical change could be when you grind a coffee bean to change it to ground coffee. By doing this, you have only changed the state and physical appearance of the coffee bean, but both ways it is still coffee. No new substance was created, and no new smell, colour, etc has occurred.
Another example of a physical change could be when you microwave a popcorn kernel so it turns into popcorn. The heat causes the particles to move faster and they start having more space between them. (Space starts expanding) This is a physical change because the state has changed and the physical appearance did too, although no new substance was formed. Additionally, no new smell, light, and more had occurred. It may have changed color, but the colour was in the popcorn kernel so it is still a physical change.
~Chemical Changes~
One example of a chemical change is when your milk spoils and turns chunky. The reason why this is a chemical change is because a new substance was created. Also, it has changed smell, possibly colour, and more. Therefore, it is a chemical change.
Another example of a chemical change is when a flower dies. The reason why is that a new substance was created. The petals and leaves have changed colour, state, smell and more. Therefore, this would be a chemical change.

Physical change-
Melting ice cream. Cannot be reversed because its not creating any new substances and is not... Well ... Being able to be reversed.

Chemical change-
Cooking egg. Cannot reverse the eggs state after being cooked in the frying pan. Or however you cook your eggs.

Two examples of physical changes are if you get a cut or if they leaves fall of a tree. Getting a cut is a physical change because it will heal back by it self so its reversible. Following that, falling tree leaves are a physical change because if you cut a leaf of a tree after a while it will grow back.

Two other examples of chemical changes are if you burn something and if you or if you put soap in water. Burning something is a chemical change because if you burn wood it turns black, releases smoke, and the smell changes, it's also non reversible. Also putting soap in water is a chemical change because the smell changes to the smell of the soap and its non reversible.

Physical Change

- Deflating something (Reversible)
Deflating something is a physical change because no chemicals will deflate something. The colour, smell, etc. doesn't change at all. Also, deflating something is reversible because you can inflate it by adding air.

Chopping carrots (Non-Reversible)
Chopping carrots is a physical change because chemicals doesn't change a carrot from being sliced. You physically chop it. This is non-reversible because, you can't put the pieces back together.

Chemical Change
- Colour of leaves Changing (Non- Reversible)
According to http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu, the colour change of leaves is a chemical change because of the energy of the light absorbed and the chemical energy. The coulour of leaves change eery season, but you cannot instantly change the colour.

- Baking a cake (Non- Reversible)
Baking a cake is a chemical change because, you use heat to bake the batter. This example is non-reversible because, once the cake is made you cannot change it back to the batter.

Chemical:
Rotting apples- the reason why this is a chemical change is because the particles in between and itself are eroding and the particles are changing into the structure of dirt.

Fireworks exploding- the reason why this is a chemical change is because the metal shreds and the salt is reacting to the fire/sparks in the wick.

Physical:
Cutting wood- Cutting wood is only a physical change because you are only changing the shape of the wood by breaking pieces of it off.

Evaporating water- When the water evaporates, the water is only changing state in to a gas be cause the particles are moving faster.

physical change:ripping up leaves.does not give any signs of chemical change and does not make anything when ripped.

chemical change:fire heating up a candle making liquid wax.when the fire is melting the wax it creates smell for one witch is a sign of chemical change and it gives of gas.

chemical change:a fruit rotting. for one it gives of smell(and a lot of it) and that is one sign of a chemical change.
