Holiday wreaths - Completed!

Today, students enjoyed an afternoon of fun and games. The students of Laurier earned a tremendous number of S.O.A.R. tickets and the principal rewarded them with some free time. Students were free to visit other classrooms to play collaborative games with their peers or they were free to work on schoolwork. It was wonderful to see students of all ages being respectful to one another! Keep up the good work and keep soaring towards being self-regulated!

IMPORTANT: Bring your Secret Santa gift tomorrow if possible.

Fractions test on Friday. Keep studying and reviewing all learned materials.

If you haven't handed in your inquiry materials, be sure to submit it all tomorrow.

Mixed numbers, what are they again? Mixed numbers are two fractions that you can add together to get an improper fraction.

Basically you have an improper fraction, picture a bucket of water. This bucket of water has WAY too much water. For this purpose lets just say that the water doesn't go anywhere, it's magical water! This bucket has all the magical water piled on top of it, to solve this problem you grab extra buckets and put the magical water into the extra buckets. You have some left over and basically... Okay that's all I got to give for some visualization examples. So you have an improper fraction that has a very high numerator. You need to see how many times the numerator can go into the denominator. That makes up the whole number in the front of the fraction. What ever extras that don't fit fully into the denominator is the numerator of your mixed fraction. The denominator is... Well, it's stays the denominator.

For a quick summary of my former paragraph, I explained how to transform an improper fraction to a mixed fraction/number. Why would you need to know this? You should know this because:
a) you might need to preform action this on Friday
b) Now you know what and why all the numbers are there, or maybe you already know that, or just didn't understand my explanation
To add or subtract the mixed number, I would add/subtract the whole number first and then find the LCD of the two fractions at the end. Finding the LCD of certain fractions make you do a lot more work though. Now you know how to addsubtract mixed numbers!

Oh, how can I do that? Surprisingly, I know the answer. Adding and subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions are so easy. However, you may will mix them up. What I will do is to use strategies. Fractions strips, counters, and common denominator.... Yeah, common denominator. The easiest way to do it. "Do the same thing to the top and the bottom". Mr. Hong said that when in Math lessons. That is important because we have to times the number to the denominator and the numerator. After it, add or subtract both of the numerator. Finally, you can find the answer. In conclusion, you can find the answers with different strategies. Use the strategies you want to find the the answers.

Adding and subtracting are easy for some people but for some people it might be hard. For example there is a question and that question is 2+3 1-4 then what you do here is to look at 3 1-4 then it’s basically 3+1-4 then it would be easier for you to understand. The you add the 2 and 3 then it would be 5 1-4 . There are also other methods but I used this one because it was easier. If you’re in a mixed number question the question might be for example 1+ 3-8 + 1-8 then you would just need to put 1 4-8.

Mixed fractions? What are mixed fractions? What are fractions?

According to Dictionary.com, a fraction is a number which is usually expressed in the form a/b. In this case, 'a' is the numerator and 'b' is the denominator. A mixed fraction is a fraction and a whole number, such as 9 3/4. A mixed fraction can also be expressed as a improper fraction, where 'a' is greater than 'b,' by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding the numerator over the denominator. "Multiply, add, multiply add." For example: 9 3/4 = 9*4+3 over 4 = 39/4.

So know you know what mixed numbers are. But how do you add and subtract them? One strategy is to add the whole numbers then add the fractions, then add it all together. If you recall, to add and subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same. This is done by finding the LCM of both numbers and multiplying to make the bottom the same. "You do the same to the top as you do to the bottom." For example, 1 1/2 +1/13, since the LCM is 26, the resulting fractions would be 1 13/26 and 1 2/26. Then you would do 1 + 1 + 13/26 + 2/26, which would yield 2 15/26. If possible, you'd simplify the answer in to lowest terms. To subtract, you do the opposite. However, when subtracting, (e.g 3 1/4 - 2 3/4) the second fraction may be larger than the first, therefore, you need to change it to an improper fraction. 3 1/4 - 2 3/4 becomes 2 5/4 - 2 3/4. Them using the LCM rule, subtract (the answer is 2/4), then simplfy into lowest terms (1/2).

Mixed fractions? Oh, that. Adding and subtracting? Piece of cake! Hopefully, after reading this, you'll all know how to add and subtract mixed fractions!

I remembered at school when Mr. Hong taught us how to add and subtract mixed fractions in different ways, the fractions wasn’t too hard but at some point confusing. Nevertheless, I understood it. Separate the whole from the fractions then find the LCD, multiply it by how many you get from the LCD then do the adding or subtracting, that’s how to get the answers.

If you are urging to know, then you should read this response. First, you will have your numbers. There are two ways to do it. The first way is to change it to an improper fraction, which has a larger number on the top than ont he bottom. In that case, you change the mixed number to an improper onme by multiplying the denominator ( the bottom number) by the whole number and then add the numerator. (the top) Do that process with both numbers. Next, we find the LCM of the denominators. Then you multiply the denominator so it equals to the LCM. And you do the same to the top, as you do to the bottom. Once both numbers have the same denominator, than you can just simply add it. If the answer is improper, than you divide the denominator to the numerator. The result will be the whole number and the remander will be the numerator.

If you want to do the second method, it will be easier. (to me) First, you forget about the whole number. Like if your number is 2 and 3/4, then you just simplyfy it to 3/4. Then you do the LCM process with your finished numbers. And then you add them. If your result is an improper fraction, then you turn it to a mixed number. (above) Now is when the whole numbers come in. You just simply add them to your result.

If you want to subtract, then the improper method is okay. But in the mixed one, before you add the numbers back to the SUBTRACTED (important) result, you will first have to subtract the seconds number from the first. Then you are safe to subtract. Sometimes, you will meet a problem when your first fractions numerator is smaller tha the second. (1 and 5/12 - 7/12) If you are in that situation, then youshould do this. First, you subtract the first number from the second. (7-5=2) Then you subtract one from the whole number in your first number(1-1=0) Then you take your denominator, and subtract it from the numerator difference. (12-2=10) That's your new numerator. Your denominator stays the same. Your whole number is the difference for the whole numbers. (Result: 1 and 5/12 - 7/12 = 0 and 10/12 or you can just say 10/12)

Wow this question is hard. This is the answer.

Some strategies I use are fraction strips,counters and common denominators. To add a mixed number, you have separate the whole number from the fraction such as 1 3/4 and 2/5. Next you have to multiply, add, or subtract the numerator like you do to the denominator. Now you found the answer.

For conclusion you could find the same answer with different strategies.

Ooooo mixed numbers!

Mixed numbers is what we are learning in Math! How do you subtract and add them? Well, Mr Hong as implanted a song in our head that we will know for the reason of our life. “Do the same to the top as we do to the bottom.” This song reminds us to do exactly what the song says. There are different strategies to add and subtract fractions. Some ways you could use is LCM, fractions strips, counters, etc.
Those are some of the best ways you could do try and do it.

Mixed numbers???!!! Never even heard of that thing until grade 2!!! And now I have to add and subtract them???!!! NNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!

But if you read this post, then you will know how to do it! First let's start with the adding. You can change the mixed numbers to improper fractions. And if the denominator is different change it so it's the same.(Change it with equivalent fractions) and subtracting it is basically the same. First change it to improper fractions then subtract.

Now you can add and subtract mixed number! (at least that's what I think so...)

How do you add and subtract mixed fractions?!! There are different strategies, but I find common denominators the fastest and easiest.

ADDING: For example, if the question was 2 1/3 + 3 1/4, you first add the whole numbers (2 and 3) which equal 5. Next, you change the denominators to the common multiple of 3 and 4, which is 12. Whatever you do to the bottom to get to 12 you must do to the top (numerator). So 1/3 would become 4/12 and 1/4 would become 3/12. Now you add 4/12 and 3/12 which equal 7/12. So your answer would be 5 7/12.

SUBTRACTING: For example, if the question was 3 1/4 - 2 1/3, you first subtract the whole numbers (3 and 2) which equal 1. Next, you change the denominators to the common multiple of 4 and 3, which is 12. Whatever you do to the bottom to get to 12 you must do to the top (numerator). So 1/4 would become 3/12 and 1/3 would become 4/12. Now you subtract 4/12 and 3/12 which equal1/12. So your answer would be 1 1/12.

And that is how you add and subtract mixed numbers!!!!!

What are the mixed number? Mixed numbers are a whole number with a fraction besides it. There are several strategies you can use to add or subtract mixed numbers. Let’s first start with the adding part. For all the questions that have the same denominator, I’ll like to start with adding the whole numbers first and then do the fractions besides. For example, 2 2/8 + 3 4/8. I’ll first add the whole numbers, which is 2+3=5, and then, I add the 2/8 and 4/8, that gives me 6/8. So 5 + 6/8 = 5 6/8.

Hey, that’s pretty easy! But how about adding mixed numbers number with different denominator? How can I solve that? For a question like 2 1/3 + 4 3/6. You’ll have to find the LCM of both numbers! Just like the first strategy. I add the whole numbers together first, ( 2 + 4 = 6) For 1/3 and 3/6. Since the LCM of 3 and 6 is 6. So I don’t need to do anything with 3/6. For 1/3, I multiply 3 by “2” to get 6 and I multiply 1 by “2.” “Because you do to the same to the top as you do to the bottom.” Now I finally got 2/6 and 3/6, I just need to simply add them together 2/3 + 3/6 = 5/6, 5/6 + 6 = 6 5/6!

To subtract, you basically do the opposite way, you take away numbers. Like 3 2/6 - 2 3/6. You see that 2/6 cannot subtract 3/6. So you have to break it down into improper fractions and then subtract! 2 8/6 - 2 3/6 = 5/6.

In conclusion, I feel like it’s a lot easier after I learned how to use these strategies!

MATH!
So how do you add or subtract mixed fractions? In my opinion, the easiest way to is is to make it into an improper fraction then finding the common denominator. I use this method because it is the simplest for me. It might take longer than other methods but when I use this I for sure know that I will not get confused throughout the process.
How I add/subtract mixed fractions: (question will be 1 and 3/6- 1 and 3/12)
Firstly I would take the fractions and convert it into an improper fraction.
( 1 and 3/6= 9/6 1 and 3/12= 15/12)
Secondly I find the LCM of both denominators.
(6: 6, 12 12: 12, 24)
So I have determined that the LCM is 12 so I will change 9/6 into a fraction with a denominator of 12.
(9/6 = 18/12)
so now I know that the question will be 18/12- 15/12.
the answer is 3/12
thats my method of adding and subtracting mixed fractions!

Actually, it is easier than you think. There are many ways you can add and subtract mixed numbers. One of the simplest, though not the fastest, ways to do that is to convert the fraction into a improper fraction. This way, there is no need to do any difficult calculations. All you need to do after that is turn the fractions into equivalent fractions with a common denominator. Then, just add/subtract the top part. After you have done that, then you may convert it back into a mixed number. For example, 1 and 3/7 + 3 and 2/5 = 10/7 + 17/5 = 50/35 + 119/35 = 169/35 = 5 and 4/35

In conclusion, this may seem very difficult, but after you get used to the rule and pattern, you will be able to quickly and easily calculate with any types of fractions.

Can you just imagine Mr.Hong singing his amazing math songs while trying to focus, if you can isn't just amazing? Mr. Hongs most recent lesson on math was based on adding and subtracting mixed number fraction, therefore, i am here to help you get a better understanding of this section of math.

Let's start off with doing the addition, first, you should change the fraction so that the denominator is the same for both fractions. Once having the same denominator you may move on to adding the fractions, the way it's done is so that the whole numbers add each other so as the numerators but the denominators must stay the same threw out the process.

Now let's learn to subtract mixed fraction! First again you want to find out the lcm and then add the numerator and while numbers together. Once done there you have the answer to your equation.

well let's use an example:
4 4/6 - 1 2/6 ( easy ) because all u have to do is subtract the fraction and then subtract the whole numbers and WALA there's your answer!

Fractions, fractions and more fractions. I know how to add and subtract them...right???

There are a few different ways to add and subtract fractions but I will only explain the one I use the most. Overall, I like the way where you can change the denominators to the LCM because I think that it is by far the easiest.

To add the fractions, I would first look at the equation. In this case, let's say it's 2 1/3 added to 3 2/6. Then, I would add the whole numbers to get the easy part out of the way. Otherwise it becomes sort of like an obstacle that only makes it harder for you to do the question. Afterwards, I would find the LCM of 3 and 6 (which is 6) and change both denominators to 6 if they haven't already. Remember, you do to the top what you do to the bottom! The answer would then be 5 4/6, which can be reduced to 5 2/3. This is your final answer.

Next, subtracting fractions. Although this is similar to the above, there are still a few differences while subtracting them. First, we have a question. Let's say that it is 4 2/6 minus 2 1/6. First, I would subtract the whole numbers to make it simpler for me and then change the denominators to the LCM if they haven't already. After this step, we would subtract the fractions. If the left number is bigger than the right number, you can just subtract. But if the right number is bigger, you must take one whole away and add the denominator number to the top of the smaller numerator. Only then can you actually subtract. The final answer would be 2 1/6.

That's the method I normally use for adding and subtracting fractions. Hopefully, everybody understands it more as well!
