GIFT OF WORDS

A NOVEL APPROACH

Today, students were introduced to stage 2 of the Novel Approach! We reviewed learning intentions and success criteria for 'GIFT OF WORDS' and their 'THINKING AND LEARNING' questions. We modelled how to complete 'GIFT OF WORDS' and had some practice completing some according to the criteria. I am excited to see the learning going on in division 1! Everything revolves around the Big 6 learning principles and you are become fluent in our 'LEARNING LANGUAGE'.

IMPORTANT:
1.) Churchill registration forms were sent home today. Please return these as soon as possible. The deadline is Feb 5th, but it is better for you to bring them in right away.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete pg. 138-139, mark and correct at home. HW will be checked tomorrow.

2.) LA/NOVEL APPROACH: Complete your first page of Gift of Words. Click here for the read aloud for 'WHEN I WAS 8'.

3.) LA/WRITING: Complete your revised version based on your self-assessment (completed in class).

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about 'GIFT OF WORDS' and reading using the context in which words are used.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain what reading for context means (Part of the criteria for gift of words).
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (engaging hook, body/supporting sentences, and conclusion)
2.) Uses 1 detailed example of a gift of word you completed as support for your paragraph.
3.) Use at least 3 transition words.
4.) Check for the givens (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation).

Have you ever had an experience where you found a word or phrase that startled you? Reading for context can help you find out what the author is trying to say. It may be a word that you've never heard before, or it can also be a phrase that might mean something. To clarify, reading for context means that you read the words around the word/phrase you are startled by. It is a very useful skill to know how to read for context since there are lots of words that may confuse you. Firstly, you can find out the direct definition of the word/phrases using the words around it. On the other hand, it can also be a word/phrase that means something that might not be listed in any dictionary and is only found in this text. Using the words around it, you can find out it's hidden meaning. An example of this is the word "outsiders". The word "outsiders" can be defined by a lot of different definitions. It could be intruders, visitors, traders, etc. From just the word "outsiders", you can't find out what it directly means. But, because from the book it says they trade fur with them, we can infer that they are not intruders and just traders or business people. To sum up, words can be defined under many definitions based on the words around it. If you ever come across a foreign word, be sure to check the other words around them too.

Everyone, when they're reading, stumbles upon a word that they don't know, and you can Monitor your Comprehension to figure out what it means, or, you can read for context, reading for context is guessing what a word means, based on what's happening in the text. For example, if you read something like, he gently put her to put, and let's say you don't know what gently means, you wouldn't guess that it means something like roughly, or violently. You would guess something that makes sense. Another example is, when I was reading a book, I didn't know what surreptitiously meant, but the character was saying "hide surreptitiously, so I guessed that it meant sneakily. And I was right! My last example is, I was reading a book with the word tantalizing in it. I didn't know what that meant, so I guessed that it meant excited, and I was somewhat right. So now you know, you don't need to always search something up, you read for context.

"The more things that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places that you'll go." - Quote by Dr. Seuss, an American author. Often, when you read a phrase without any information or statement, the phrase does not mean as much. Though, when context is added and you've finally understood the backstory, new perspectives and different opinions open up in your mind. For instance, when I was reading the picture book 'When I Was 8', I learnt many phrases which would not have made sense or shown much meaning if it had no context, though the message was much stronger with the story. This book is about a girl who pleads and begs her father to go to school so that she could have an education and could finally read her long desired book. Though, when she is reluctantly left behind at the school, she discovers new things and is put through hard labor. Although, with each task she learns more and more and finally, she learns how to read and is awarded with pride and victorious aura. Additionally, some phrases and words that I understood from the context and story of this book included "Begged like a hungry dog after scraps.". After reading this book, this line opens many new ideas which could be the message from the author such as how the girl is very desperate to read yet her father is attempting to protect her so he declines her request. Another message which I understood was that there was a possibility that finances was not amazing in their family or that the opportunity to learn did not exist for her possibly because not many girls could go to school in her area which she lived in. In summarization, Reading For Context means to read and understand different perspectives and messages which the author is trying send. This strategy also helps to better understand phrases which may sound a bit difficult when voiced. What did you learn when using this strategy?

Do you ever come across a word you don't know? That is when you read for context. Reading for context is like reading around the word or phrase you do not know and making a guess based on the atmosphere of the context or of what you already know about it. As an example, "Now, it is time to trade fur with the outsiders." Now, imagine you didn't know about who are the "outsiders," but from "trade fur" you can infer this person is from a time when people trade furs and Indigenous people like the Inuit trade furs and people who wants them at that time are the Europeans. See, it isn't hard at all! People's view on the context is not always the same, so what was your view of the example stated?

( I call reading for context “context clues”. Also, everyone please do par) “Wesley walked down the street looking obnoxious, he wasn’t happy after getting his report card”, I remember me reading a book with that exact same word in it two years ago. You probably think that I just went ahead a searched it up on my trusty computer, well actually I found out what the word meant almost right away. I used something called “context clues”, which can also be know as “reading for context”. It means finding out what something means by just looking for the context around it, kind of like finding clues to your answer. For example, in the first example about Wesley being obnoxious, I didn’t know what obnoxious meant. I used context clues to find out that he was unhappy and frustrated. I knew it was that because first, it said unhappy in the second sentence, that gave me a clue. Secondly, he was unhappy about his report card, meaning his report card wasn’t that best, and If I am all correct in that part, then obnoxious should obviously only mean the same as the second sentence. He was unhappy and/or frustrated. To come to think of it, I have a droll writing a skill, so amusing. Have you figured it out yet

Meaning like did you figure out what droll means for context clues.

Example for gift of word.

In the some part of the story, it says "Father would not let me go to the outsiders". Using context clues, you should find that outsiders could be someone who is dangerous, or some people who are a bad influence for the narrator. Also, the father could know more then the narrator does. You can find all this information just by using a reading strategy. Cool right!

Do you have some words you don’t understand it? I have so many words I don’t understand when I read the books. But I can use the google or anything to let me know the meaning. Then you should read for context, reading the context can help you to know what happen next of the story. First, you can guess the meaning of words by the protagonist’s reaction. Second, like if there is a noun after that word, so maybe that’s a verb. And last, you can ask Mr. Hong😊. These are my strategies. I wish that can help you!!!

Gift of words G.O.W.? More like C.O.W cow of words!
I think of it like expressing of words, something you wont understand without context something that is hooked to a story that you are reading and that otherwise you would not understand. These type of words can make your piece of righting look professional, it will hook your readers like fish!

Reading for context is when you guess the meaning of something with clues. For example, in the sentence " They robbed the bank", you might not know who robbed the bank. But you could see that the bank was robbed which means it was robbed by robbers. You could also see what something means based on someones reactions and gestures. These were some ways you could find out what a phrase means and I hope these are useful to you.

As can be seen, she was probably a very stubborn yet passionate and determined person. To conclude her father might have only said no because he knew by the sister's experience, it was not a good place and was just trying to protect her. Isn't amazing how we got all that from one small phrase?

Put a comma between "Reading can be strenuous" and "Especially when you see unfamiliar words.
Also change it from "when the book read" to "if a book read".
Change it to "before it says that she wanted to read".

What is reading for context? Reading for context is reading past the word or phrase in a book or article and inferring what would happen next according to what information you understand. Everyone has a different view of what a word or phrase means to them and what they know already that they can use to infer what happens next. So if you don't understand what a word means and you can't ask or search it up, then that's when reading for context can help you, so firstly you should focus on that word then pull out any information you know about it to get closer, secondly try inferring to learn more about the word, lastly put all that you learned and know about that word together to find out what it means and then just do that same process with any phrase or word to get closer to the meaning of it. Now I hope you know how to read for context.

The gift of words... they help let the reader understand the emotions going on and the intensity! Of course, it makes us think but... it’s not that meaningful nor does it make sense until you look at the neighboring words. To help better understand what the author is trying to say (with their 3000 iq wording) we look for context till it narrows it down to one specific meaning, though it may not mean the exact same for everyone, we get a gist of it. For instance, the book ‘When I was Eight’ where the phrase is “cut me down to size”, I at least didn’t know exactly what it meant before I looked at the situation. Could’ve been literally cut down to size etc. In addition, with the structure around it where the nun/teacher snarled at her and even slamming an older kid book on her desk... it cuts down to the nun/ teacher just wanting to prove Olemaun (the eight-year-old) that she wasn’t all that good stuff. To put it differently, the gift of words is a great way to immerse yourself in the story IF you have enough context to determine what they are referring to (or else the words wouldn’t really have any meaning).

What is context or reading for context, Reading for context is reading a word or phrase in a book and inferring what will happen next in the book. Everyone has a different view of what the word is or phrase or something to them, Knowing what the word means you can infer what happens next in the book. If you don't understand what a word means you can't search it up, you need to reread it and find what the word means then find out its just a word with nothing to do with a phrase and search for phrases and use you're BK to infer what happens or where they are [he, she, them].

What is reading for context? Reading for context is when you don’t understand a word or phrase and instead look around the text to identify the meaning behind it. In short, it is to look around what you don’t understand. To illustrate this, upon first seeing some of the gift of words content for ‘when I was 8’, I had no idea what some of it meant. But after reading the book and reading what situation the word/phrase was used in, I understood. For example, on the gift of words hand out it says “sun slept in the winter and woke in the summer”. If I were to not know the book or the situation/place this sentence was used in. I would effectively have close to no idea what the context was about. But after reading the surrounding text, I understood. Furthermore, reading for context is a great strategy to try and comprehend things you don’t understand.

Ever thought of a way to figure out what a word might mean without searching it up? For example, what if you don’t know a word on a quiz? And you can’t pick up your phone during the test and search up the definition? Well don’t worry, because there is a strategy to do this! Using context can help you figure out or at least briefly give you an example of what this mystery word might mean. Context is when you read around the word and use the other words to give you a brief description of what the sentence/paragraph is talking about. Although this strategy doesn’t tell you exactly what this word’s definition is, this strategy does allow you to make an educated guess based off the given evidence provided. For instance, as stated from the book ‘When I was eight’ one of the phrases “My Inuit name was taken and I was to be called Margaret” which means that these people have changed her name and has made people believe that her name is now Margaret, although her real name is Olemaun. In conclusion, using context is a great way to figure out the meaning without finding the straight answer. Although this strategy will need more thinking, you’ll end up with an answer with much more perspective.

Have you ever read something and you kind of got confused what it means. Well, there is this wonderful strategies that might help you! This is called reading for context. This means that you are reading around the word that you have trouble with and trying to have a better understanding of it. People can have different understanding of the phrase/word. For example, when we where listening to the book called When I was eight, there was this part where is said " outsiders". Some people might say that outsiders might mean the Europeans, or some may say they are business people. These are all correct answers if you can back it up with proof.

That is when you can use the gift of words. What is the gift of words? The gift of words is when you guess the meaning of a word or a phrase. How do you do it? You can guess the meaning of the word or a phrase by looking how it is used. You can also see the pictures and find out what it means too. For example, it said "he jumped very wildly", and you didn't know what wildly meant, you can guess how it is used by looking how it is used and the pictures. In conclusion, gift of words is a very important skill and it is very useful when you don't know a word.

Have you ever been reading a book, and didn't know what a word meant? And you were just feeling too lazy to grab the laptop right beside you and google it? I definitely have (is that weird). A way to figure out what the word means is using the context. Reading the context around a word or phrase can not only help you understand what it means, but also define it. Take, for example, the word 'outsiders'. This word can mean different things, but in the context of When I Was Eight, it means people who don't live where she does. In other contexts, however, it could mean someone who is kind of a loner, and does their own thing. Context can change the meaning a lot. In short, reading context is a great way to figure out what a word means without doing anything!

Okay so image this you're reading a book you stumble across a word that you don't understand what it means and you are too lazy to get out you're phone and google it. what do you do? Well you could start out by reading the context around it and try and make out what it means just by the words around it. But in different stories it can mean different things.For example in the book "When I Was Eight" there was a word that was said "outsiders" now this can mean a lot of things but in the story I think they are the people not from their land. You could think of them as the military, business men ect. Context could change a word completely depending on whats around it, so the next time you don't understand what a word means just read the context around it! (I helps a lot)

The gift of words is guessing what a word means, it’s similar to an inference. For example, in the book “When I Was Eight” there was a word “outsiders”. Outsiders can mean a lot of different things, but in the story the word can mean something different than another book. In short, words can mean a lot of different things.

Reading for context is a easy way to understand unfamiliar words without a dictionary and also makes us think deeper about the story. Similarly, the gift of words are phrases that cannot be found in dictionaries but we can using the context of the story and making inferences. For example, in the book "When I Was Eight", the phrase "begged like a hungry dog after scraps" doesn't make much sense at first. However, once we read the sentences around it and critically think about it, we can discover many meanings. Some of these include the protagonists desire to learn to read, her interest in learning new things, her father denying her request, and even why he does so. "In the middle of the night, a man dressed in all black aimed his gun and took single shot that eliminated the target." Was this man a criminal or was he ordered to do it by the government? We won't know unless we read for context. We have to know the rest of the story or we won't be able to tell if what this man did was legal or not. For example, you wouldn't know what they mean by, "pinned" if you didn't read the rest of the sentence. In, "When I was Eight" the word "pinned" means something like, "trapped" or, "stuck between two things (the things being the nun and the sink.)". If you didn't read for context though, you might think it meant, "something attached with a pin". Reading for context can really help find out what a word or phrase means in what you are reading. In addition, you might even add another meaning to a word to your personal dictionary. In other words, reading for context will give you a chance to use more words in speech and writing. "In the middle of the night, a man dressed in all black aimed his gun and fired a single shot that eliminated his target." Was this man a criminal or was he sent by the government? This, we will never know.
