Happy Mother's Day!

Today, the students finished their work on their (spoilers) Mother's Day gifts! They spent the morning writing and gluing to make their gifts perfect! We hope you enjoy them, Moms! After lunch, we had a guest speaker in to talk to the class about Christianity, and what it is like to be a Christian. This is the first in a series of speakers for different religions to help the students with their inquiry projects.

IMPORTANT: For all grade 6s wishing to go on the upcoming Planetarium Field Trip, please make sure that you have turned in the field trip form ASAP. We still need a number of Parent-volunteer drivers (for both classes), or else we may not be able to go!

1.) MATH:

Get started on the What do you think questions on pg 375, we will discuss these next class!

2.) CHEER:

Continue to think about and work on your cheers, and see if you can add anything to what your group already has!

3.) FRENCH:

Be sure that your French Order Forms (the grid from last class) is complete, as they will be collected at the beginning of next class.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today we had a visitor in our class to talk about Christianity and what it is like to be a Christian. You had the opportunity to ask questions to help guide your learning through your inquiries, and filled out exit slips to confirm a few things they learnt.
What did you learn from our speaker?
How will you use this for your inquiries (regardless of which religion you are studying)?
If you are learning about a different religion, what did you learn about Christianity that you might want to compare to Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, or Islam?
Provide feedback to your peers, and let them know if they gave you an idea for your inquiry.

During April, Mr. Collins had introduced our religion unit for Social Studies. We had started by discussing different beliefs and how we categorize them. We were then funnelled into religion. We started researching different aspects of different religions such as Christianity and Hinduism. We had gone through different group activities to learn about the history and culture of different religions and how they are similar and different than other religions. Recently, we were introduced to the main part of our unit, the religion inquiry. We were split into different groups, each studying a different religion. This was decided from a form each student filled out during the beginning of the unit. Yesterday, we had someone visit the school and lecture us about the culture and beliefs of Christianity. This would be the first out of many different people that would visit to talk about religion. We spent about 50 minutes asking questions and learning about the different rules about Christianity before the speaker left. During that period, there were many different questions, each one spurring a new thought in my head.

The speaker did not talk on her own behalf, instead, she spent time answering any questions that people had been holding onto for a long time. Each question was answered in such detail, that it was able to engulf the small time that we had to listen to this person teach us. Small questions like "Are there any forbidden foods" took so long to answer because of the detail that was given to answer the question. I had to give up on asking my own question because my arm began to ache. Because of the detail of the answers, I was able to learn quite a bit. Things such as Baptized water is symbolic, blood is a banned "food", or that Christmas was not based on the name Jesus Christ. One thing that had been bothering me was Joseph, Jesus' assumed father. This bothered me because it is stated that Jesus is the son of god. This was very quickly answered when she said that Joseph is not his biological father and that his wife had become pregnant on a whim. I felt satisfied after the question was asked because it had been itching my back for too long.

Since I am studying Christianity in our inquiry, I will fact check things that I was wondering about from the speech, to see if I can take away anything else. Using all the info that was given to me, I can use different references to gain more info on certain areas of the inquiry. My goal is to learn as much as possible, this means learning about what it is like to be Christian, the different prayers, cultures, and beliefs. I am now able to learn much more thanks to what the speaker had taught us.

I am a Muslim, so I attend different events, and I know the different things we must do to worship our god. I had talked to a friend that was Christian, and I had asked him if there were any daily prayers or restrictions in regards to Christianity. He told me that there was not anything they had to do, which caught me off guard. In Islam, there are set times for different prayers, as a child who has the normal disability to not be able to wake up at one in the morning, I usually only attend 3 of the prayers. These are known as Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. These are the ones I attend because I am usually at school during the other prayer times. That fact that there were no prayer times in Christianity did catch me off guard, but it as easy to digest.

In conclusion. The visiting speaker was able to help me learn quite a bit about Christianity. There are so many things that make it unique, and things that also make it similar to other religions. I am very grateful that this Speaker was able to visit us, and I am looking forward to seeing other speakers talk about different religions.

One thing I learned from Bethel (or whatever her name was) was that before, marriage was not about love, but about security and reproduction. Even though i'm not studying Christianity, it still helps because I can use the information to compare it with what I am studying. I might want to compare what they believe in and stuff like that.

On Friday, a speak came in to our school to talk about Christianity . It was interesting to learning more about Christianity.

I learned that marriage was not about love and the holy water is the regular water but blessed. I am learning about Buddhism. Also I am Sikn and went to a catholic school so I might know a little about Christianity.

On Friday, a speaker came into our school to talk about Christianity. It was interesting to ask questions about Christianity.

There are many things that I learned from Bethel. But there's not much that I can remember... I HAVE A HALF A PAGE WORTH OF NOTES AS PROOF! (But it's all at school.)

I learned that in Christianity there isn't a specific dress code or any dietary restrictions. She said something about alcohol and someone else said that Jesus drank wine and that whole little conversation was a bit confusing. I could use this as a comparison to Hinduism in my inquiry. I could compare this fact to Hinduism by finding out if they have any dietary restrictions and dress codes.

Today, a speaker that was good with Christianity went to our school and gave us a presentation about Christianity. She let us ask questions and answered them. I learned some things from her.

One thing I learned that Joseph, was kind of a father to Jesus, but Jesus was born from God and Mary, so Joseph might be like a step father, and takes care of Jesus. Another thing I learned was that the water that you pour on babies are blessed, and called lie, Jesus' skin and blood, so the babies will become like Jesus. Lastly, I learned that Church is on Sundays because every six days, God takes a rest, and so, humans do to by going to church.

How I can compare to the religion I'm doing right now, Judaism, is that they are related and it could help as the god and the beliefs are the same. It might be a lot the same, and it will be easier as there are similar.

Overall, I learned a lot from the speaker to day, as she said a lot of useful facts while answering the questions.

@ Everyone - I learned a lot from Bethel's Q & A session talk! When I was young, I was forced to go to church by my parents. In my opinion, this may be the reason why I am not the most religious person right now. I believe that I am more of a spiritual person. I believe that we should be kind to everyone and treat each other with respect.

From my understanding of different belief systems, I have come to understand that one thing all belief systems/religions have in common is this.....they all promote kindness to all no matter what your beliefs are. :-)

Bethel taught me that there are 1000's of different denominations of the Christian religion! I had no idea! I thought there were only about 10! Boy, was I wrong!

I really enjoyed how Bethel did not tell us that Christianity was the best religion. She told us many times that everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe. Also, we live in a country that has a charter of rights and freedoms. Canada is a unique country and most countries do not have this. We are entitled the right to believe in any religion we choose. We are a country that promotes diversity. I think it is important for us to learn about all belief systems so we have a better understanding of them.

I learned that,
-Joseph was not Jesus’s biological father
-Christians baptize newborn babies to show commitment and to show how they were going to live the way Jesus did
-Christians go to church on Sundays because every six days, God takes a rest, and so they do the same by going to church.
I could use what I learned to compare Christianity and the religion I’m studying to see what kind of differences and similarities there are in the two religions.
I learned that Joseph was not Jesus’s biological so I can compare this fact to see if the religion I’m studying had any of these kinds of things in it too.

On this Friday, we had a special speaker came to our class to talk about christianity. Her name is Bethel. I leanred a lot about christianity during this session.

The minutes before the speaker talk, I still think that christianity is just chritianity, there is no more history or any stuff to learn about. Moreover, there would be nothing that i would be interesting in, but I was totally wrong. There is a lot of fun stuff about christianity or any other religions.

One thing that I learned form this lesson is that Joseph is not really Jesus father, so that is why jesus is a human, but Joseph is a god. Furthermore, Jesus did not born in an usual way, Jesus mother just pregnant with out any........ So every chritian think that Jesus is special.

In y opnion, I think every religion has some thing that's in common. For example, Islam, my inquiry religion, they all only have one god. there still many things in common.

Overall, after this lessons, I have some new understanding about chritianity, and other religion. I am very happy that Grade 7 had a chance to invited a speaker to come in, and ask has a chance to ask question about chritianity thqat can not google it.

Last Friday, the speaker was going to answer all of our questions about Christianity and I had a couple of thing that I have learned. For example, when Jesus was Jewish and not really in Christianity, also that holy water was just normal water but blessed. Last of all, when you marry another person it is not about love but to build up the trust in the community. In conclusion, Bethel helped me learn a lot more about Christianity and it gave me a better understanding of it and I'm thankful of it.

I learned many things from Bethel Lee's Question and Answer session on Friday May 10th.

1. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Greek.

2. Joseph was Jesus's 'dad,' but not bioligically.

3. Christianity is called Christianity because it used to be a derogatory term used by people who did not believe in Jesus.

I am doing Christianity so I can use this newfound knowledge in my inquiry project.

On Friday, we had a speaker come to talk about Christianity. I learned many things from Bethel. I learned that jesus was half-god half-human. I also learned that Joseph wasn't Jesus biological father Something else I learned was that christianity was actually branched off of Judaism. For my inquiry, I'm studying Hinduism. I want to use the information I learned this Friday to compare the two religions. Something that I want to compare between the two are their main beliefs and the big idea behind the religions. In conclusion, I can use the new information I learned to contribute to my inquiry.

Starting last month, our teachers have introduced an entirely new unit for us to learn about, which altogether revolves around our worldview. Right now, we have started learning a little bit more about the religion portion of this unit, which consists of getting into groups and learning about a specific type of religion. Just this Friday, a speaker came in to talk to us about her religion, Christianity. We learned a lot from this experience and now we're using that information to boost our learning.

First of all, we all learned a lot since every small question was answered with quite a lot of detail. First of all, Joseph and God were both assumed the "father" of Jesus until the speaker told us that Joseph was actually Jesus' mom's brother. Therefore, God is his true parent. Apparently Christians also pour Holy Water (water that is blessed) on infants to baptize them and shows that they are always faithful in Jesus Christ. Usually there is nothing banned in this religion except for maybe alcohol. Marriage isn't a Christian tradition, and back then it was based on community and security, not love.

I will use this for my inquiry because some of the questions that were asked about Christianity can also be applied to different religions, and therefore, we can compare between religions. For example, I could research more about what things are banned in Judaism. This also makes me wonder what types of traditions are unique to my inquiry religion. Another possible question could be if there are any set praying times where you must pray as a routine.

In conclusion, I learned a lot from the speaker who came in, and there are actually many things about Christianity that can also be applied to different religions.

On Friday, we had a visitor coming to our class for a presentation on Christianity. I’ve learned lots of facts based on this presentation. For example, I learned that there’s a traditional event of pouring water on newborn babies. This was originated from Judaism. It was a significant event of the birth of life. In addition, it was also known as the baptism of washing off people’s sins. For instance, I learned that The New Testament was written in Greek. However, The Old Testament was written in Hebrew.

It was a great presentation overall and it increased my knowledge of Christianity. Luckily, The religion I’m working on is also Christianity so I will use this all my background knowledge to support me while I’m discovering more!

Another interesting project awaits us! After a few lessons on beliefs, worldview, and religion with Mr. Collins, we are introduced to our religion inquiry project. We will need to learn and research, in groups, a specific type of religion that we’ve been assigned. On Friday, Division 1 and 2 are lucky to have an expert to come in and talk about Christianity. Whether if our topic is on Christianity or not, we can all learn something new and use that information. For me, I will use these things I learnt about Christianity to compare it to my religion, Islam. Maybe there’ll be some surprising similarities between them that I never knew before!

First, one student asked about Joseph and God both being Jesus’ father. The visitor explained to us that Joseph wasn’t Jesus’ biological father and that Jesus, in a mythical way, is not produced and born like normal humans. She said that another myth is that his mother randomly got pregnant with Jesus. I heard that Jesus is surprisingly also an important figure in the religion of Islam, but I wonder if Christians and Muslims think of Jesus differently. Another thing that the expert kept on mentioning is how the different branches or denominations have different interpretations, opinions, and thinking. For example, the independent churches may be different from other denominations. This makes me wonder if Islam is split into groups and branches and the differences between them. Next, someone talked about the origin of the word, “Christianity”. She told us that it was originally a word or term that others used to mock followers in a derisive way. I would like to see where the word, “Islam” and “Muslim”, came from. Lastly, I learnt from our visitor that the holy water poured on infants were used to baptize and wash away sin. This makes me want to see what kind of traditions Muslims may have and the meaning behind their actions.

In conclusion, this is what I learnt from the Q&A session from Friday and how I’ll use that in my own inquiry. I am very grateful for our guest to visit our classes and teach us. She took time out of her own day, just to teach us about this. For that fact, I think that everyone should use that opportunity to learn and gather new information.

On Friday, we had a speaker who was Bethel Lee and from what I know ( what the teachers told us ) she is one of U.B.C’s former students who had gotten a masters degree in the research of the religion Christianity. And so our teachers decided to take Ms. Lee to come and speak to us about her understanding of Christianity, and I would like to thank her for voluntarily coming to see us and speaking and explaining so much. Thank you, what an experience!

And here's what I learned from her understanding of Christianity,

- Joseph was not actually Jesus’s biological father, but from what I know, he is something like a protector of Jesus Christ, but don't take it like I am a professor.

- Christians baptize newborn children, and this was to show how committed they were to this religion and they also want to show their support. And they show how they were going to live the the way Jesus did.

And there is much more in my head, but I was not feeling so well today so I forget quite a big portion of what I learned for a short amount of time.
And since I am in the Christian religion research inquiry group I will continue to work and research more on this topic. And I will use this information wisely in my presentation.

Ror the new unit of inquiry, Mr. Collins had introduced religion. On friday there is a speaker name Bethel that has a huge background knowledge with Christianity went to our school and gave us a chance to ask any question about Christianity and she will answer it.There are many things that I learned from Bethel which I think will help me a lot when I am doing my inquiry. Since I am doing the Christianity. But there's not much that I can recalled, Thank god I have talk note. I learned that in Jesus is Jewish, and more. I could use this as a early review.

On Friday we had a person that really knew about Christianity and she taught us a lot of things that how Christianity works and history. I didn’t know that there was different types of some - like Christianity and I would say I learned a couple of things but not that many because I already knew all about them and I know this because I use to take classes every Tuesday after school and the teacher would just talk about mostly history and how we should believe about “ Afterlife “ and go to church every Sunday. We just asked her a Bunch of questions relating about Christianity and how it changed everything and back then she also told us that there was only 1 religion and I think that was not really having enough freedom. I also was told that there was only 1 religion back then and I didn’t know that and I also just noticed that Judaism is like Christianity but Judaism came before Christianity which “ The Followers of Jesus were called “. That was also a good experience and I don’t think I ever did an “ Q&A “ which I think is cool and one of the best part of this year ( in my opinion ).

Today we had a presentation on Christianity that made me improve my background knowledge.

I learned a lot more about Christianity that I didn’t know. I enjoyed the presentation, and it was helpful to understand Christianity way more than I did before. Since I am studying Islam, I can compare some things they might have in common. I can compare the way they believe in their gods. Since Christianity mainly believes in one god, I can compare it to Islam’s god and beliefs. This was helpful to me so I could improve my understanding a lot.

I hope we do some more things similar to this in the future so all of us could get a better understanding of everything
