How to Build an Igloo

Today, students returned after our first official 'SNOW DAY' in over 12 years. It is not typical for schools in Vancouver to be closed due to snow fall. This unique weather allowed us to use the snow to learn about Indigenous cultures and traditions. We learned about indigenous peoples' traditions today and learned how they are able to create igloos using only basic tools. We learned how difficult and challenging this can be without practice.

1.) ART:

Final draft is due tomorrow. Complete this at home.
You will have time to create your final 'LEARNING' presentation poster in class tomorrow.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you participated in an 'IGLOO' structural challenge.
You built some background knowledge in Inuit traditions.
Following this, we went outside to use their techniques to build a structure.
You were responsible for creating your teams and Mr. Fisher and I gave you some criteria to do this.

In paragraph form, explain what you learned about the following from this activity:

1.) collaboration (Did everyone participate? Did you motivate others to try? etc)

“STOP THROWING SNOWBALLS!” -A very mad teammate (Unaid) Let’s just say that David started it. He threw first, I returned it.

Everyone on my team contributed, in various ways. Some shovelled, some gathered snow for no reason, some stayed out of the way so they don’t set back our slow progress, some used the container for the mold for our bricks. We had a few moments where we went off task but it turned out okay. I didn’t really understand what was the plan because our team’s communication wasn’t the best. Or in my opinion it wasn’t. I gathered some snow incase we needed it because we only had one container and two shovels...

So at first we started with a somewhat large circle. Then as we started to place down the bricks from David’s container we realized it would be far too much work so we shrank it down to a smaller circle. I looked around after our group got off task and checked out Mr. Hong and Mr. Fisher’s (Mr. Fong’s) and realized how much easier it would be to use their method. When I got back to my group everyone had nearly given up so I gathered a few other members from my group and got to work. We piled up snow into a mountain shape like Mr. Fong did and compacted it. It was a little bit smaller than theirs though. Then we used a broken shovel and ruler to empty out a small hole into the center of the mountain. Then we ran out of time so we only had a small whole and not a hollow shell.

I learned that it is easier to destroy something than to make it. As in we made a mountain and destroyed it by putting a hole into it. That was SO much easier than putting blocks everywhere. Quick and easy. We improved on the efficiency of building our “igloo”. The first time was way too slow. The second was much quicker. The second was also much sturdier and it was actually able to act as a shelter for something. (It was too small to fit me or my teammates.) So we improved on the quality of our igloo.

In conclusion I think that I would definitely want to do this challenge again. It was a lot of fun and I wish we had more time to complete our second attempt.

When I heard the word "challenge", I immediately thought back to the snowball challenge from before. Maybe this activity will be a lot more exciting.

Overall, we had fun and everything was very clear. From this experience, we also learned many things like collaboration and the structure in general.

First of all, everybody participated with different thoughts about our structure. After discussing, we settled on a medium-sized circle with chunks of snow bordering the outside. Everybody helped mold snow onto the structure, and after thirty minutes, we had a good-sized structure. This had only happened because everybody contributed to the activity.

Once again, we built our structure using a few different ideas. First, we carved the circle into the snow, to mark where we were going to have the igloo, and then we started making blocks of snow. However, this proved to be difficult and time-consuming, so we switched to packing snow onto the edges of the circle. We learned that making the igloo curve in at the end was actually very complicated. We also improved on getting the base and sides to be stable and sturdy.

In conclusion, the activity we had today was fun and we were able to learn how hard it actually is to make a real igloo. Tomorrow, I hope that we can finish it and see the end result.

@ Miranda - Great job! I liked how detailed you were and how you gave examples to support your point. Though, there can be some improvements that can be made. Maybe elaborate on the second paragraph and say what you learned about the structure and collaboration. Other than that, great job!

I also learned that the structure can be built many different ways and that the Inuits probably tested many different ideas before using the snow blocks.

Though we saw a video on how to build one, we were still limited of the materials and amount of snow. We were required to inquire and find other ways to build our shelter.

I think that my group did very well on collaboration. We made sure everyone was participating and was encouraging to each other. I felt like that was a key reason why we succeeded on our igloo. We were able to make it to the point where we are building the roof. My team started off carving an template where our igloo would be. We dogged all the snow out. We tried carving blocks and then making the igloo, but found that time-wasting and difficult. Consequently, we just started to pack snow and make walls. Even when walls sometimes do become unstable, we were able to stabilize them with more compact snow. We did learn however to always have a good base because our wall did collapse a bit at first. Other than that, I felt like this challenge was a great success.

In the end, this is what we did for this afternoon. It was both interesting and fun. We were able to learn quite a lot, while also enjoying our time. I am excited to continue to build on our igloo tomorrow (hopefully it doesn’t get destroyed).

Today, division one and two were orking on igloos! They ended up very big and strong. ithing that the igloo I made was pretty good. Today, my group made a igloo. It started like a base. then a layer more, and more,and more. It was easier for my group because someone brought a mold, that has a rectangle shape. Then we could make snow blocks way easier. It was easy for us to build it because we each had a job. To make blocks, to get snow, to bring snow, two people to make the igloo. Then the igloo was pretty easy. Some problems were that the igllo sometimes couldn't stick ytogether. We solved that by putting snow into the holes. Also, near the end, SOME PEOPLE started to throw snowballs. But overall, it was good.

The igloos were really fun to make, and made me learn lot's of things. I learned that snow can stick together, so the roof won't fall of.

“Here, I will put the snow on the outside and you will put the snow on the inside”

Today, division one and division two participated in an igloo structural challenge. We went outside, and together as a team, we found a nice spot near the sun so that the snow would be easier to stick together. Then, we made a nice circle for our igloo and started building. During this activity, we made many revisions like making our circle smaller and changing the places where we would dump the snow.

We used some shovels to gather snow to the circle and one of our teammate's container to shape the snow into squares. We later learned that using the one container would make the process much slower and harder so we just ended up gathering the snow and shaping it up. We revised and made our igloo circle smaller because we thought it would be easier to build that way and faster.

In conclusion, we collaboratively planned, built and revised.

WOW!!! When I heard the word 'IGLOO' structural challenge, I think it should be hard but it must be fun!

Today, both grade 7 is participate in 'IGLOO' structural challenge. We went outside as a 6 people team and biuld a thing called igloo.

I think My group is really in to this 'igloo' structural challenge! I think my team collabrate together to make a igloo.. How do we collabrate? We encourage other if they want to give up, we gave others snow if they need it. My team make a nice circle to be the igloo's boots, and then we use hard snow to make walls, and then use soft snow to stick the hard snow together.

We improve a lot by watching Mr.Fisher and Mr.hong's igloo, also some other team ideas. How did we improve? First, any snowball can destroy our igloo, so we started to use rulers to make a rectangle but it doesn''t work becasue we can't take the snow out, but then,we just randonly put snow on it because it is too hard to make a rectangle and no one would let us borrow their tools becasue they're using it!

Overall, I think this is how our group build igloo. After this afternoon experience, I found out it's not that easy to build an igloo like on the video, but I do know I have fun this afternoon.

OK picture the arctic a land of snow, you need to build a shelter. you would probably build an igloo. today we build igloos the purposes for this was collaboration and stable structures. our group chose the tennis court with no one in it. first every one started to make blocks, then we started putting them together. we learned that if you pack fresh snow on the front and inside it creates a strong wall

We basically just tried to build a snow castle but obviously it won’t be like and castle but first we were using tools such as shovels to get big chunks of ice then after that we were trying to build the castle. We started to build walls then after that we would just keep building up till it can’t go any further anymore because it might be too high up then it just won’t build up anymore then it will start falling apart because it’s too high up in the air. After that we would just put chunks of snow on it but I already know it won’t turn out to be a castle and I think it would come out as a little house and it also don’t have to be big but no too small either so make it like a box and the size of a box but medium. Building snow little fortress is definitely not easy to make but you will need tools for it and have ideas on what to do first and last. We hope we would after the little project it would turn out to be great and hopefully it can look nice and other people not trying to break it down.

Ugh this is gonna be short.

Today was very special for 2 reasons, the first reason being that the snow was very deep and fun to play with, the second one being that we had commenced another ADST challenge. The challenge this time was to build a fort out of snow, preferably representing that of an igloo. We had watched a small video on how these igloos were made, and then everyone got to work.

I can say that everyone did participate, we had contributed to the creation of an igloo, but it all dissolved by the end. We were able to build a whole two layers of wall before our whole team was either throwing snow-balls, or building a cone. Motivation went as far as saying to help, which did prove useful but as we know it all fell apart. It was quite fun working in the snow though, and I hope we can do snow-ball fights tomorrow if the snow lasts.

We did not complete the goal of creating a shelter, though there were a few small things I learned from attempting such a task. One thing I learned was that many structures built from a compact-able material require a lot to make a sturdy piece. We didn't really improve on anything because by the end our groups were doing separate things.

This was a very fun activity and I hope that we may be able to do more ADST challenges in the future.

Brrrrr! It’s cold! Today both div 1 and div 2 participated in an igloo building contest. Even though no group really finished (except for Mr.hong and Mr.fisher) it was still lots of fun.

In my opinion, our whole group participated. We all contributed to our snow structure and we all listened to each other's ideas. We all worked together to build our first igloo and we all had our own thing to do.
What we did was first clear a small circular patch to start building. We then made small blocks of snow using a Davids lunch container. Lastly, we patched the blocks with loose snow.

We soon started another strategy of building and started snacking snow to make a pile. We continually did this until it was a reasonable size. We then compacted it and made a hole in the middle. Our igloo design got inspiration from Mr.hong and Mr.fisher.

In conclusion, I enjoyed working with my group and enjoyed making an igloo today. I thought we all had the right mindset and all had a fun time working together.

Poof! A snowball hit me in the back of the neck. "I declare a snowball war on you!" yelled Edward. "Game on!" I shouted. "Whoa! Wait a minute! Aren't we supposed to be working on our snow igloos?"

Today the grade six and seven pupils of Divisions 1 and 2 were presented with and ADST critical thinking challenge (courtesy of someone' *cough* Raymond). For the challenge, we were required to build our own igloo/snow structure within a group of six using only natural materials (snow) and several tools (shovels).

Before heading outside and beginning construction on our snow structures, we were subjected to a 10-minute video by the National Film Board of Canada on the topic of Erecting your own Igloo. It provided us with some very useful background knowledge and gave us a basic understanding of how we were to do it.

After, we choose our on groups of six, consisting of an equal number of boys and girls, and headed outside. At once, everyone began to start building their structures. Because my group wasn't so creative, we just decided to copy the igloo design. However, as soon as we had started, we faced an obstruction. The snow in the area we were working was too soft, and the walls were not compact enough now matter how hard we squished the snow together.

This problem was solved as soon as I spotted a large round object (a snowball) and helpfully suggested that it would save a lot less time an hassle if I just rolled the snow monstrosity over to our workplace. This was an excellent idea as we beat up the snowball and were supplied with an adequate amount of snow.

In the first twenty or so minutes, everything was going according to plan, then, the majority of my group got involved in a heated argument over who was actually working and who was being lazy. It all commenced thanks to a certain person who implied that so-and-so was 'being lazy.' After that, a civil war broke out betwixt them and the rest was chaos.

Eventually, I quit and found a lot more pleasure in engaging in a friendly fire snowball fight between my friends. As you can see here, our group failed to be both collaborative and supportive.

To sum it all up, I had a very enjoyable experience during this ADST challenge, although certain group participants were being extraordinarily rowdy.

Building an igloo seems impossible for me since I didn’t have any background knowledge about it. But luckily, we got to watch a video of how to build an igloo, and I guess that’s where we gained some background knowledge.

I think my group worked fairly well to build an igloo! We all participated in it and worked cooperatively to build the igloo. We have used the “Big 6 Learning Principals” to lead us to success. We first got together and have a little conversation to figure out who’s doing what and how are we going to build it. Then, we started making blocks of snow to pile it up. There’s one person working inside the igloo to do some fixings, its job is to make sure none of the snow blocks is falling apart. Others were working on the outside to make snow blocks. As I mentioned earlier, we’ve used the Big 6 Learning Principals to lead us to success. We got our learning intention and success criteria. We went over the self and peer-assessment, we asked questions when we’re unsure. we gave each other feedback and suggestions on how we could improve it.

All in all, I think my group did a great job by encouraging and accepting. We never fight for which idea is better. Instead, we encouraged and accepted everyone’s opinions and work as a team to tried to make our igloo better.

Sweat, cold and tiring!
The first thing that came to my mind when I thought of an igloo, and this was because well you know everyone knows what happens when you need to use snow and build either a contraption or a small structure! It's not unusual for your mind to think that something is tiring/hard before you have even started and well that's what I thought, but that really changed!

Today Divisions 1 and 2 went outside to begin our new little inquiry about snow structures and architecture, I believe this is also apart of engineering and programming or ADST.
First thing we were assigned to groups of either 5 or 6 and well my group had only 5 people, and this was because when Mr. Hong said you must have an even about of both genders in your groups, but our group was made up of only one gender, this was because the were simple not enough of the other gender to accommodate Mr. Hong’s wish!

Then once my group got outside we simply found cool area on the rennis court and made the first base of the igloo by clearing the top layers of snow and using that to create compact snow bricks to make all of the layers for the igloo, and well it took time to get the first layer, but over all it was very efficient because some of our group members were prepared for this and made quick work of all the snow.
And sooner or later we got the first 3 layers done and we also gave feedback to each other along the way and we all responded to all that feedback, and made the igloo better!

Overall think my group was very successful in making this igloo, I hope we can continue to do more things like this in the future.

Having challenges in life can push your limits and reach new heights. An igloo is designed to keep a person warm and comfortable in the coldest of temperatures. Yesterday there was a massive falling of snow which brought us for an igloo group challenge. Mr. Hong and Fischer set for us a criteria to follow in building an igloo.
First and foremost, building an igloo was never an easy thing to do because we only have to use our bare hands and piles of snow. However, I had some friends to help me out with it. We decided on what size to build which was a small one. But then I discovered a big pile of snow which made us changed our plan from a small igloo into a bigger one. All of us participated in collecting the piles of snow and made sure that it was based on the criteria of what our teachers had set for us. In addition to that, we made sure to build it on a firm foundation by putting the snow inside the circle so it would not collapse. On the other hand, we had to reassess on where did we go wrong because it was not a perfect circle. Instead, it is better to keep tightening each layer of the structure not to have a gap.

We built the igloo from the bottom to the top and we were trying to keep it from falling apart. Lastly I learned that the structures have to be hard and spacious on the inside so someone can fit in the igloo. We also improved the structure on how strong it was so someone could stand on it.

So in conclusion, although we only made it halfway in building an igloo, it was never an easy challenge. However, we had an opportunity to explore, test our ideas, evaluate, and solve some problems as a group filled with fun.

Yay igloos wait why. I never makes a igloo before.

Collaboration in my group was pretty good. One of my group mates discovered a huge of snow. It have lots of in it. We try to motivate by making us laugh. Stabling the igloo was hard. We had the right tools to try to make the igloo. So we build it with our hands. I learned how to make a igloo if it is not finished. I got to improve on the structure of the igloo. Next time, I will get my big shovel tomorrow.

In conclusion, I had fun building the igloo.

Oh my! It’s actually hard to build an igloo! But, my group works really hard, and in my opinion, our group’s igloo is the most decent one. Maybe, the reason is our group really concentrate on working and not hanging out with other friends. We actually worked really hard. We discussed our plannings and separated our jobs and work towards our goal. We guess this is how group work works!

When I am first watching this video, I am literally surprised by how human beings build an igloo with just a knife. They could have already built one igloo within about one and a half hour. Compare with our igloo which we built, I can’t even think of any positive things of ours. Perhaps, they have already lived in the artic for their whole life. I am really impressed with how the roof of the igloo stands. I think it is because of when the snow melts, they will stick together? Newton’s gonna cry when he watches this video! (lol) I am still thinking of how the gravity works of building an igloo.

In our group, we all participated in this activity because it is extremely fun, for sure. It is literally a extremely fun activity, for me. I really like snow, I have never seen that much snow before. I am pretty excited to do this too when I heard we are going to do that. We plan the structure and the strategies we use to make bricks. We have a really good idea of doing this really quickly. (I laid down and hug the snow to squeeze them and make them tight. Then, I cut a brick out from the hard snow. Don’t copy our idea! lol) Actually, I feel pretty cold outside and being lazy and don’t want to make snow bricks. However, I knew it’s my responsibility to help my group build the igloo.

I learnt a lot today. About how to build a igloo with just rulers…...I learnt more too. About how collaborating, cooperating and making decisions. I really enjoy too! I hope we will have more challenges after it.

"OOF" How did this word go from a Roblox meme to an actual word used in the English language? Well, that's something for another time but it is the sound I made when I accidentally slipped while going to meet my team mates.

Today, everyone separated into teams to build snow shelter structures in the tennis courts. I think theres were 6 people on my team and there were two tennis courts. For some reason though, my team and I had an entire court to ourselves because everyone decided to go to the other court. Working alone is actually more preferred by me though so I enjoyed it. We decided to create an igloo that probably had enough space for one of two people. We didn't get to finish is but we got a lot done. All we were missing was the ceiling. My team were all building and constructing the igloo while I was carving snow blocks for them to construct since that's one of the things I'm better at. Everyone participated and the only thing that was not fun for me was my soaking LEATHER gloves and frozen toes. At one point it got kind of tiring and quiet so since I knew we had the entire court to ourselves, I played some music on my phone to cheer everyone up. It worked quite well actually.

We started off building the igloo by drawing out a circle on the ground. At first we tried making snow blocks but we weren't very successful in that since not everyone had the same way of doing it and it didn't turn out the best. Then, we decided that we'll just build a nice firm dome first and then carve and smooth it out since we had some amazing carvers on our team. For extra snow blocks, they all left that to me which I didn't have a problem with because I knew I was good at that part. To be honest, I never thought I would learn how to build an igloo but you know what? I learned how to do that today and it was cool. Really fun actually! I didn't think I would enjoy it that much but I honestly really did. It's been a while since I've had that much fun. I don't think I really improved on anything other than teamwork. Everything else was kind of new to me. I guess I can say I also improved on snow sculpting. Doing it with make-shift tools such as rulers ended up being weirdly satisfying haha.

Anyways, in conclusion, this was one of the most fun activities I've done all winter and I hope we can do this again. I truly enjoyed myself and I'm looking forward to carving out more snow structures in the future.

Yesterday we did a fun snow challenge involving many skills.

Yesterday we each had to make a group of people, and build an igloo. Our group had 8 people at first, but then 2 boys left our group later on so we had 6. At the start our the building we came up with the idea of making a circle, and take the snow from inside the circle and making the igloo. Everyone in the group was participating, and having fun. Halfway through some people started disagreeing with each other. As they were fighting we were working very hard on making ours withstand an impacted force. When we were halfway done or a bit less, the two boys left, so we had 6 people remaining. After they left we came up with another strategy of building it up taller, and adding more snow to it later. We made it tall, but it wasn’t finsihed. We still have a lot to add to our igloo. If we had enough time I think we would of built a nice igloo with a lot of room, and space. I learned that building an igloo is harder than it seems. It helped that we watched a video on how to make an igloo before making it. In the area we were in, it was hard to make solid bricks out of snow, so we tried our best to just pile snow up in hopeing it would turn out fine, which it did.

In conclusion this was really fun and enjoyable to do. Next time I think we should have some more time to plan out what we are doing, because our group wasn’t the best at being organized.

Yesterday we did a fun snow challenge involving many skills.

Yesterday we each had to make a group of people, and build an igloo. Our group had 8 people at first, but then 2 boys left our group later on so we had 6. At the start our the building we came up with the idea of making a circle, and take the snow from inside the circle and making the igloo. Everyone in the group was participating, and having fun. Halfway through some people started disagreeing with each other. As they were fighting we were working very hard on making ours withstand an impacted force. When we were halfway done or a bit less, the two boys left, so we had 6 people remaining. After they left we came up with another strategy of building it up taller, and adding more snow to it later. We made it tall, but it wasn’t finsihed. We still have a lot to add to our igloo.

I think If we had enough time I think we would of built a nice igloo with a lot of room, and space. I learned that building an igloo is harder than it seems. yesterday we were building a igloo in the afternoon of the school day. But not everyone in the team is working on the igloo I think it is because that The igloo that we are building us really small but we have a lot of people in our team so a lot of people don’t have anything to do.
We have nine people totally I don’t remember how many people do the boys have a we have nine people totally I don’t remember how many people do the boy have ans the girls have, first we decided to build a normal igloo but then we decided to do the igloo the Mr hong is doing basically a bunch of snow and then dig the middle open. So it can fit two people in there but ours is really small so that I can only fit a two years old kid in there

" THIS IS ILLOGICAL!!!" Kevin you really need to stop being so full of yourself.

to be honest we had a okay team collaboration, out of 10 i would probably give it a four. the team mates in my group were Max, Kevin, Anita, Krizia, Serin, Breanna and me.

Serin: Serin was pretty nice she listened to most of my suggestions, she was caring and supported m e. that as when is WAS in the group. but before when we were picking our groups she would ask everyone else but me and would sort of pretend like i wasn't even there. that put me in the blue zone.

Krizia: Krizia was caring she would help me if i needed help and would put me in the green zone. she helped build the igloo and did a lot of work. also, when Serin was ignoring me Krizia said that i was in there group and that its all good. so after Serin had put me in the blue zone Krizia put me back in the green zone.

Anita: Anita wasn't very nice she was kind of just lazying around and would wreak the area i was working on. it put me in the yellow zone because she would just sit there and be just pushing off the wall i had been working on. and she wouldn't be helping so i tried to convince her to help but then she would just be rude.so that put me in the red zone but i didn't because it wasn't worth my time and continued with my work.

Breanna: Breanna was very nice and was very hard working, she helped out a lot and sort of connected everyone. we had a lot of fun and she put me in the green zone.

Kevin: It wasn't too much of a pleasant experience working with Kevin. to be honest Kevin was very full of himself and was self absorbed. he didn't really follow the criteria and wasn't really cooperating. i felt like he was just fooling around. he was just distroying snowmen. but i just continued. but after kevin left our group and through snowballs at us so i may or may not have thrown one in return.

Max: suprisingly Max helped more than a lot of the group members. he brought snow for us to use then started to build with us. but after he left with Kevin to go to a different group.
