Executive Function Skills

Today, we started the day off with music class with Ms. Chung. Afterwards, we had our first Teams SOAR assembly. Students put the final touches on their inquiry presentations between recess and lunch. In the afternoon, most students presented their inquiries. Some presented to Ms. Altman an some presented to me. I was thoroughly impressed with the improvements the students made.

IMPORTANT:
1) CHURCHILL FORMS: Please submit asap.

LEARNING/PLANNER:
1.) LA/READING: Read for 30 minutes and log your reflection.

2.) MATH: Make sure you have marked and corrected your homework from yesterday and you have it with you in class tomorrow.

3.) ART: Your first draft must is due tomorrow (roughly coloured)

4.) LA/WRITING:

Brainstorming for your essay topic is due tomorrow.
We will work on our intro paragraphs in class tomorrow and look at different types of hooks you can use in your intro paragraphs.

5.) POST A RESPONSE:

Part of Career Education has to do with staying organized and on top of your work. I will be doing a formal check of your PAR today.
The following components will be checked and assessed for completion: post, self/peer assessment, and revision.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can summarize what executive function (EF) is and provide examples/support from the video.

Have you ever heard of executive functions? Or, broken down, good memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Let me elaborate. Executive functions are what help us do well and work hard. It means we can multitask, focus, and make quick, easy transitions. All three of these executive functions work together to help us do well in all sorts of things, from sports, to finishing a homework assignment. Psychologist Deborah Phillips compares executive functions to air traffic control systems. This is because, in an air traffic control system, you must manage several things at once, such as information and instructions. But, without executive functions, there would just be chaos. In case it's still a bit confusing, let's go over each individual EF.
Firstly, we have "working memory." This executive function helps us store and process information. An adequate "working memory" can store and process several pieces of information at once, and this can help us solve questions, complete tasks, and comprehend more complex things. Essentially, a working memory is crucial in our executive functions. But, a working memory is not the only executive function.
The second executive function, or EF, is "inhibitory control." This means that we can suppress our emotions or habits. Inhibitory control helps us focus on something and not become distracted by our emotions. It is important to have inhibitory control so we can focus and control our behaviour. For example, the video showed a child picking their nose, then what they might be like as an adult if they did not have any inhibitory control. As you probably guessed, the adult was picking their nose. Or, another example could be that, for your birthday, you get a gift you don't want. If you did not have decent inhibitory control, you would probably say something like, "I hate this. Why did you give it to me?! It's horrible!" Obviously, that is very rude and would most likely be hurtful to the person. That is one of the reasons why we need inhibitory control; to control our behaviour and calm our emotions. However, without the last executive function, we will not be as successful.
Cognitive flexibility, the third executive function, refers to our ability to transition and change our perspective on things. For example, in high school, you need to be able to transition from one class to another to maximize your learning. Without this EF, you would not be able to continue thinking about a particular thing, and get distracted easily. As the video mentioned, even simple things like being able to stop talking could be hard, even when you should. Together, the three executive functions help us work towards success.
In summary, the three executive functions are a working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Do you have these three executive functions? Could you improve on them?

What Is executive function? An executive function is a process that allows us to plan, focus, remember your instructions, and doing multiple tasks in a successful way. We have 3 components of an executive function which is a working memory, an Inhibitory control card, and Cognitive flexibilities. All of these 3 components are all connected to each other. We call the executive functions and components “air traffic control”

The first thing of the 3 components is called the working memory. The working memory is something responsible for handling the information. If it’s greatly developed it will allow us to be in charge of multiple pieces of information simultaneously. Difficult tasks could be answered, and deep ideas recognize but, our brain power is not unlimited.

Cognitive flexibility is a skill to conform new tasks in an efficient way to switch our perspective but if we don’t have much cognitive flexibility, we would be unable to adapt, and it would also be difficult to cooperate with other people. An example of cognitive flexibility (as a story) is that there are 2 students named Jayden and Hayden.

Jayden regulates and focuses on his math and presentation script. Hayden wanted to talk about Minecraft 1.19 update while Jayden is not getting distracted. Hayden’s working rate is small because he mostly draws and chats about Minecraft. Jayden is always focused while Hayden becomes unsuccessful.

Executive function develops most 5 years of function and as it develops more, more people would be able to store extra memories in your head. This is what an executive function is and what the 3 components represent.

Let's say if someone gets mad at something that happened, a person with good "inhibitory control" would control their feelings and not express them out loud. Likely to not hurt the other person's feelings or embarrass yourself in public. "Inhibitory control" is equally as important as the first one, you will need all parts of the EF to be successful. Lastly, the last executive function is "cognitive flexibility". "cognitive flexibility" means our ability to transition from things and change tasks in a short time. A person who has a weak "cognitive flexibility" would get easily distracted when doing something and can't stay on task. In conclusion her work is good and the feedback she gets is positive. On the other side we have Jay. Hay’s emotions are always expressed in his behavior, and he often fails to control those emotions. He gets distracted very fast and he has difficulties finishing things he has started. If you heard in the video his work always contains mediocre. This type of work can lead to negative feedback and can lower self-esteem. Ann’s cognitive flexibility is also great. She can always change her perspective and is always able to find a way around her roadblocks. During school, she can easily transition from one subject to another at a very quick speed. When you look at Jay you can see that he has problems. He is always thinking inflexible. But to change his perspective in his response is constructive criticism. Self-control. Memory. Multi-tasking. All of these words describe one thing. Executive function. Executive function are mental skills that we use every day to learn and manage our daily lives. Without executive function, it would be hard to follow instructions, focus, handle emotions, and more. There are three main components in executive function; working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. All three of these parts are connected and influence each other in many different ways. Every day, us humans have to manage a lot of information and distractions simultaneously. So, without great executive functions, bad things could happen. The executive function is also often called "the management system of the brain". This is because all the skills required let us set goals, plan, and accomplish things. If someone struggles with this, it could impact them quite a lot. Executive function is responsible for many areas of our lives, including our attention, organization, starting tasks and staying focused, understanding different points of view, managing emotions, and keeping track of your actions. Lets start with the first part of executive function, working memory. Working memory is the ability to maintain information in your head and then using it in some way. It's also in charge of processing information. If this skill is well developed, it allows us to multi-task, also enabling us to process various kinds of information at the same time. For example, you might use this skill to read a piece of text on a French test, then holding on to that information, you would then use it to answer the questions. Without much of this skill, our intelligence and knowledge is limited. Activities such as games can practice our working memory. The next skill is inhibitory control, which is basically self-control. This is the ability to ignore distractions around you, resist temptations, and concentrate. With this skill, you would be fully in charge of your emotions and temper, while at the same time avoiding letting the emotions or feelings of others affect you. This skill is often used during intense situations, and keeps you from going out of control. Without this, you may have some trouble controlling your behaviour. To illustrate, someone may use this skill to keep themselves from blurting out a comment, answer, or question in class. This helps them stay regulated and in control. There are three components first working memory, second inhibitory control and last but not the least cognitive flexibility. What those 3 means? We have to manage a lot of things like multitasking. What does working memory mean? Working memory is the one who’s holding a lot of things you need to remember he hold like tons of memory and chunk informations it allows us to manage a lot of things at the same time. By asking question and answering your questions right by remembering the things they said before. Example today we have a Word Work test and couple of things we have to remember is the word and the meaning of the word. Their gonna teach you first then after learning it they will test you. So you’re brain have to dig and try to remember what the word’s meaning. And you have to memorise a lot of things if you want to get better. You always do multitasking you have to remember and you have to look for the answer of the questions. He manages a lot of things.
Inhibitory Control what does it mean? Concentrating to each things you need to do. Or you have to do. Regulating your emotions like example you were mad because a lot of people make fun of you and you tried to hide your emotions by pretending to be ok. He handles it in the stressful situations. Like you have a bad habit that you do in the past years and you tried to change it and remove that habit but it was difficult to forget it and after years passing it’s getting weird.
Cognitive Flexibility to adopt new task quick like those task you just learned has been stuck on your mind and can’t forget about it. And change perspective and those little perspective has been stuck on your mind and you already adopted it. And you have a tunnel vision of your learnings. But were also stubborn and uncooperative person.

Responsible, you always do your work on time and you always remember the things that is essential. And even though someone tried to distract you, you always focus on what are you doing and she will be able to do her work properly anything you do that is distracted is not working because she’s responsible she knows what can happen if she didn’t do the thing. She have a lot of things and ideas in her head. She gets better marks because she didn’t get distracted and she’s completely focused on her goal.
While in the other being irresponsible person being irresponsible person is one of the worse thing ever. You always forgot things you do remember somethings but you always remember the not essential thing. And you always got distracted you’re so easy to distract like instead of doing your work and catching up you’re ending up by not completing your work. Example you were working on something then someone texted you and the time passes you didn’t notice that you got distracted by the person. You don’t care if something happen you know what’s gonna happen if you didn’t do it. You have a lot of things in mind but those things are some of them are not essential. So you’re ending up getting bad marks. I have met the success criteria.

Executive function.
The definition is proficiency in adaptable thinking, planning, self-monitoring, self-control, working memory, time management, and organization. Executive function basically helpes you manage your life. There is a lot of different ways to help you in life like if you are managing field school trips and getting people to come that is also multi tasking. Also before doing some thing you can stop and think.

exective function. What is it? Well, to put the meaning into a simple way, it’s when a self regulation that the mental can process. Let’s say for an example. A ball bouncing up and down, thats an EF. When may we use executive functions in our daily lives? We use this process during starting activity, shifting from one plan to another or even perhaps self regulating our emotions. We use EF in our daily lives every day, and you may not even have realized it until just now! When i first found out what this process was, I admit that i had no idea what it meant, nor what it was until now. Did you learn something new?
