Inspired by Jackson Pollock

Today, the Grade 7 students were inspired by Jackson Pollock's action splatter style of painting. They created artwork that they all contributed to using their understanding of the 'Zones of Regulation'. We also added a few other colours to add to the variety. They have been learning about the elements of art and the principles of design. Today they put their knowledge to use by using a variety of colours, shapes, and lines.

1.) MATH:

Complete pg 156-157 if you haven't completed the questions.
Mark all answers at home using the back of your textbook.

2.) LA:

Complete your word work (16 sentences).
Hand in a paper copy or submit via Drive to my email address.
Word Quiz tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Using at least 8 of your words from this week, write a creative paragraph.
The story you create should flow smoothly and should not be random sentences that do not connect.
Give one student feedback about the content of their story. Let them know if they didn't use the word correctly.

1st to do P.A.R.?
My family and I were walking down a few HUTONGS, looking for something interesting to buy or eat, when we came across a mob of DEMONSTRATORS, who had taken up the whole street, and were now walking around, and chanting phrases that weren't quite audible. This chanting cause TURMOIL between my parents, and they wanted to find out what was going on. My brother and I approached someone who was chanting near us, and they only gave us a VAGUE description of how they were trying to change their government from communism to democracy. The government was obviously CONTRADICTED to the idea, and since my brother was getting CLAUSTROPHOBIC, we decided to leave the scene. When we were leaving, a man stepped onto a makeshift DIAS (made of a construction crane), and he blared a chant through an old, DETERIORATING megaphone. My family and I left, and went back to our hotel.

This is a made up story
You know, China is an interesting place. They got these weird things called hutongs. Which is apparently some sort of alley way. At first I thought the book said croutons. Hmm, since China is so weird let me tell you a story about China. A long time ago, China would really protrude from all the other countries because of the corruption in their government. Many demonstrators would yell and cause a lot of turmoil on the dais. Which then the government gave a very vague answer to why he was dishonest. Which surprisingly made everyone calm down a bit, but the fallout after was just insane! Everyone was crowding the streets trying to get back home which made a lot of people claustrophobic. Now from that day on, the government promised to never be dishonest again. The end
By the way I have no idea if any of this made sense.

China's a really big country, so many places to go to but almost every city in China has many hutongs we need to walk through. It gets really crowded and humid making me feel mind of claustrophobic. There was this one day I was walking with my friend through a hutong but there was barely anyone in the ally. We thought it was strange so we went to the Square to see if anything was happening. Surprisingly there was. There were 2 or 3 chairmen on the dais and there were a couple of demonstrators beside them. Citizens were chanting and causing so much turmoil making my ears practically bleed. Since my friend and I weren't there for so long we only heard one of the chairmen saying why he gave a vague answer and not telling the real truth behind the reason for him having to build the mall. The fallout later was terrifying considering some people had to be sent to the hospital. It was getting dark so my friend and I went home. That was one of the craziest days for my first time being in China.
I made this up I don't really have any ideas...

*Ding!* +1 notification from xxxxx Secondary School.
I got up from my nap to read the text…
It says: “Dear Emily, Unfortunately you have failed your speech about homeless people. Please come to school right now so you can restage it. You are lucky I gave you another opportunity to present it. Now come before I change my mind. -You teacher”
“Wait, whaaat? Its 9pm!!!! Why now?!?!?!?!”, I thought to myself. “Ughhh…. The things I do for my grade is unbelievable…” I decided to get out of bed and head to school. I decided to go through the hutong because it was a faster way to get to school. It was very empty it was pretty creepy...I decided to walk faster. Being the clumsy person I am, I tripped on a rock that protrudes from the flat, hard ground. When I dusted the dirt from my knee, I saw a glimpse of someone’s shadow, but when I rubbed my eyes and looked again, it was gone. I was pretty sure that I was getting paranoid, but I chose to continue heading to school and ignoring that fact that someone may be following me. After a minute, I felt a hard push. Ahhh!!! I landed on my face. A small pebble went in my eye. My vision in my right eye was vague. I was on my back because I hurt my knees from the fall. Suddenly two policemen walked up to me.I was in turmoil. Why are they here? How did they find me? The taller one asked me, “Are you okay?” I answered, “Yes”. Shoot! Why did I contradicted it? What is wrong with me, I thought to myself. “No, you are not.”, the shorter told me. “Your right eye is bleeding. Don’t worry. We’ll help you.” Wait, what?!?!? It’s bleeding?!?!?! I asked for a mirror. I saw me face with the only eye that was available. Holy! It’s bleeding so much. After 15 seconds, it seemed to deteriorate… One of the policemen drove me home while the other one was sitting on the passenger seat. I finally asked the how they found me. They said that they were looking for a that stole $10,000 from the bank until they encountered me. I realized that it may be the criminal that pushed me and followed me just so he/she could distract the police so he/she could escape. “What a smart criminal…”, I thought to myself… It’s pretty obvious that I’ve failed the speech because I couldn’t make it to school. From now on, I’ll work harder on my speeches so I don’t fail and almost get blind. THE END.

Today when mr hong read the book , it reminded me when I was in China with my family two years ago.I had a vague memory but let me tell you what I remembered.
I remembered when we were in china ,we walked through a lot hutongs , although is tired but we also saw a lot of interesting things. After that, we went back hotel , the hotel was actually a little bit small so I felt claustrophobic, but I still feel okay cause I will only slept there one day. I saw there is a news in tv and it is about some demonstrators were on the street because they were contradicted of what the government said. My sister has a lot of conjecture about what is happened next , and she also said that china was a little bit turmoil. I was not really remembered the news but I also remembered that the picture from the news ,there was a boy standing on the dais and said loud to a group to people that they didn't agree what the government did. Although I didn't really did many things in china ,but I also like how people were revered to introduce new stuff and they also helped my family a lot.

Old man Peterson knew his eyesight was DETERIORATING, just as well as he knew the combination code to his apartment, he didn’t (not very well anyways). Old Pete didn’t have the best memory, as you might’ve inferred, but Peterson didn’t need to have been able to see well, or remember things well to know that the events occurring outside of his home were way out of the ordinary.
Molly was a REVERED, and popular student because of all the community work she did. Everyone believed her to be a perfect angel, but her actions certainly CONTRADICTED her innocent image. Little Molly and her classmates were using a park table, a couple HUTONGS away from the main street of the town, as a DAIS. The neighbourhood was in TURMOIL. There had to be a mob of at least 40 little first graders holding little signs that said ‘No more homework!’ and other thing to that effect. Had the tiny protesters not been so short, and had many of the words on the signs not been misspelled, you probably could’ve mistaken these children as full blown DEMONSTRATORS. The children sat on, and by the park bench for about another half hour, but if you’ve been in contact with young children, you’d know that their attention spans are incredibly… short. So it wasn’t soon before they were back thinking that they could hide behind poles even though their bodies obviously PROTRUDED enough that they were in fact, very visible.
Ol’ Peter sighed and picked up his paper and a pen. This would be an interesting story to tell his children when they grew up, but he’d have to make sure he remembered it.

I don't exactly know when or where this takes place. It doesn't make sense in China but there's hutongs!??!? Oh well...

I had the worst day ever today... you ought to be ashamed on how much you spoil these heartless,PARANOID students.Alas,I have never seen such CORRUPTION in these kids. Take that Andrew for example,he was reading.I hate reading,I don’t care if it was silent reading time.I of course disciplined him by beating me with my stick. Now,I believe in a cynic way of teaching in which I can hurt the students in any way I want,just for fun. Anyways,the day kicked of when we started with attendance. A couple foolhardy kids,Issac, Caden,and Miles decided to fake their names as George Washington,Donald Trump and I forgot the last one.Now,I feel REVERENT for good old Donald,so I threw them out of the window to take out the trash.I think they landed in the HUTONG (alleyway) nearby. 4 down 24 more to get rid of! So,first we had gym.I made the girls do 50 push-ups and the boys do 100.A few boys began whining that they had to do more,but I told them it was like that in high school. When they still protested,I had the DEMONSTRATORS squashed under the gymnastic equipment. Good bye,Jerry, Casey and Essan.(I think they are still under there.) Ah,only 21 more! Next,math! Kevin.M says he hates me because I gave the kids 30,000 pages of homework,which CONTRADICTED what they should think me as,a hero. So,I locked him up in a locker,he's still in there(and I forgot the locker combination :-) ) . 20 more. The bell rings for recess. Karman asks if we can go out for recess,I said no. And I locked him in the locker too.19 more.Art,I told them they can do anything they want . Kevin.W says he wants make saleté,but he will need to go outside. They contradicted what the demonstrators were saying. Then there was gunfire and it caused turmoil. The fallout was two dead people.\

Nice paragraph. Here are a few suggestions:
-"Strangely, there was a dais and the government was giving a vague speech about cats and dogs.".
You can't be talking about a dais and saying that the government was giving a speech about cats and dogs. It doesn't make sense. You can say that the government is standing on the dais or something.
-you could add more detail so it makes more sense

So China, the corruption there made China protrude. The demonstrators wanted democracy so they demonstrated in the hutongs, but the government only gave a vague answer. So they restaged the demonstration on the dais in the city's main building. which was so crowded it made everyone claustrophobic. And the government changed. The end.

I had walked to the square, where many were protesting. I had went there because I had revered the people, standing up for what they wanted and believed. It just seemed amazing how they would all work together. But once I had arrived, my excited smile had dropped. People were laid onto stretchers when each minute past by. Health and happiness were deteriorating because of this corruption within the communist government. For every eye I looked in, there was turmoil. They had obviously foreshadowed this, but they all seemed confused. They were all people that contradicted the idea of having to be forced to be doing things that they didn't want. I felt pity inside of me for these people. I could agree with them. The lies in this country aren't vague, but deep. They manage to hide everything from the citizens. The demonstrator soon climbed upon the truck that had been attacked from before. He shouted something, and earned positive replies from the tired people. Everyone stood up around me. They all shot their fists into the air, chanting. I started to get a bit claustrophobic and pushed past the crowd, earning a few glares on my way out. Once I finally escaped, I looked behind me. The fists were still raised. The microphone still in the hands of the demonstrator. Chants still rising like the bile in my throat. It wasn't out of hate, I was just worried that things may start to ascend like never before. I walked away from the square. The road was filled. It didn't seem like the same road I had used to get here. The used and dirty mattresses were found in nearby hutongs. This was a disaster, seeing people raging over things they couldn't control. It was a disaster, hearing howls of despair when somebody was lifted off and sent to the hospital. It was a disaster, to be somewhere that was never safe. I'm not sure if I would ever see a smile from the people I had known anymore.

Wings of Fire fanfic

Chapter one

Moon paced the stone halls of Jade Mountain Academy. It had been almost two weeks since the end of the school year, and because Sunny, Clay, Tsunami, and Starflight, the Dragonets of Destiny and school founders, were away on a diplomatic mission with the Queen of the SandWings- Sunny's Mother, Thorn- Moon and the remainder of the Jade Winglet had stayed to look after the school. Winter and Kinkajou had gone to visit Queen Glory of the RainWings, also the last Dragonet of destiny, and Turtle went to visit his mother, Queen Coral of the SeaWings. So only she and Qibli were left. He was probably in the music cave. Somehow, without the bustling dragons and busy thoughts crowding the halls, it made the school seem much smaller. If she let herself think about it to much, it even seemed a bit claustrophobic.
Moon sighed. She missed Kinkajou, Winter, and Turtle. Hopefully they would be back soon. It was just too QUIET. Lonely. There was nothing to do.
She decided to try and find Qibli. It would be nice to have some company.She reached out with her mind, momentarily forgetting that she had given all her friends skyfire to protect their thoughts. Oh well. She had a pretty good idea of where he might be anyway.
Qibli had grown up in the scorpion den, a city in the kingdom of sand that was full of cutthroats and thieves, raised by a mother who hated him and two older siblings who actively tried to kill him every time they saw him. Until he was three and his mother sold him to the Outclaws. Luckily that was when Thorn was in charge of the city, before she became Queen, and she easily and rightfully earned his respect and loyalty. Although he never showed it, beneath his goofy, confident surface was a wound that even Thorn could never heal.
But the SandWings were a surprisingly musical tribe. Drumming helped Qibli slow the pace of his thoughts and remember only happy times- Thorn. Outclaws. Safety. He was in the music cave a lot.
So that was where she went.

Chapter two

Qibli's mind was in turmoil. He sat in the sleeping cave he usually shared with Winter, trying not to think of his friend's sarcastic comments or the stillness of his surroundings. He had come back from the music cave to find a small slip of paper on his bed.
It read "The Scorpion Den has been corrupted. Vulture has taken over. All of us are at his mercy. We need you- you're the only one who can stop him, and he is planning something, and this time I know he will not fail- I think he may be losing it after his previous failed attempts at taking the SandWing throne. Please... You are our last hope."
The freedom that had come with drumming had long deteriorated, because there was one problem. A big one.
Vulture...was his grandfather. And not the friendly type. The biggest crime lord known in the history of Pyrrhia, he had a dragon skull tattoo for every dragon he had ever killed. He was COVERED IN THEM. He almost looked like a leopard from a distance.
"Qibli?" A voice from the doorway made him jump. Moon was watching him anxiously.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes." He answered vaguely. "I- I'm fine."
She paced into the room and studied his eyes doubtfully.
"All right, what's going on?" She asked. "I can tell there's something wrong."
Qibli sighed. Somehow the situation seemed a bit less awful now. It always did when Moon was around. He held out the letter with shaking talons. As she read it, Moons eyes grew wide.
"What..." She gasped. "How... What are you going to do?"
"I don't know." He admitted. A lump was rising in his throat. he took a deep breath. "I- I think- I have to face him."
"Alone?" Moon shook her head. "No. I'm coming with you."
"It's not safe." He caught her talons in his. "And besides, you need to take care of the school." Moon studded his eyes again for a moment. The silver teardrop scales at the outside corners of her eyes glinted in the dim light. Then she sighed.
"I see your point. But you said it yourself- it isn't safe."
Qibli turned away to hide his face. This was going to be so hard. He did have a plan, but I wouldn't end well for him.
"I'll be fine." He lied.

He and Moon, using the school map, and a lot of time, found their way to the weapons cave. On a raised dais, a wooden box sat. There was nothing else in the room.
"That's it?" Qibli asked. Moon unlocked the box with a key on a ring that she pulled out of a small black bag she was carrying. Inside was a coulee of small knives, a duty sword, and a big stick. Great. He sighed and took the sturdiest knife.
Since their conversation, Moon had been acting somewhat paranoid. She kept glancing at him, twisting the key ring in her claws, and pacing whenever she could. Both seemed to be feeling the doom. They made their way outside, Qibli doing subconsciously walking as slowly as possible. Moon didn't object. He was having to contradict his every instinct, knowing what he was getting into was almost definitely worse than not knowing. He had to do this.

They reached a tunnel opening out onto the mountainside and stoped. Moon turned to him.
"I just want you to know that this is the dumbest thing you've ever done- And the Jade Winglet has done some pretty crazy things. But it's also the bravest."
Qibli stopped her. "Yes, we have done some insane things since we met. WE. And if ether of us is a hero, it's you." He ducked his head, embarrassed.
Moon leaned forward and wrapped her wings around him.
"I'll miss you Qibli" She said quietly. Blinking back tears, he murmured "Goodbye Moon."
He turned and lifted off, only looking back once. Once he was in the air he let the tears come.
When he had said goodbye to Moon, she hadn't known it would be forever.

Summary for the rest of the book

So Qibli’s plan to stop Vulture and sacrifice his life goes wrong. Vulture captures Qibli, and finding out about Moon and how much Qibli cares about her, sends an assasin to Jade Mountain, hoping that by killing Moon he could break Qibli. But Moon’s visions warn her of what’s happening. She manages to evade the assasin. Unfortunately Vulture guesses at her powers and captures her as well. Still wanting to break Qibli, and now with a useful new toy, he uses a couple of ancient animus objects to torture Moon and force her to use her powers for them. Even Qibli starts to lose hope...
Until he and Moon are thrown into the same cell. She helps him stay strong, and sure enough Queen Thorn has spies in Vultures organization who tell her what has happened, and she stages an attack on Vulture with all her forces, and after freeing the innocents captured by Vulture, they defeat him and he is sentenced to life in prison.

It was around five in the afternoon when Maya finally got home from her after school programs. Yes! Now I can finally go and meet Mai at the haunted house to go check it out. Maya was walking home when she spotted the Halloween Parade. There was a couple people standing on a dais off to the side. Judging from the crowd there’s probably some turmoil over there. Oh well. Maya mused while continuing to walk home. When Maya got home she quickly put on her cat costume and ran to the haunted house. The haunted house looked as if it were deteriorating. “Hey! Maya! Over here!” Mai shouted running over.
“Hi!” Maya shouted back.
“So, this is the haunted house.” Mai said looking up. “Come on let's go.” Mai pulled Maya along with her into the haunted house.
“I can walk you know.” Maya spoke.
“Oh right. Whoops.” Mai said releasing her hold on Maya. As the two girls walked into the house the doors shut behind them. Maya jumped What if there’s a crazy ghost who wants to kill us? Calm down Maya your just being paranoid. Maya took a deep breath and continued walking with Mai. Deeper into the haunted house there was a what looked like a statue of a revered person protruding from the wall. When the girls looked closer they could see that the statue’s details were fading away leaving behind a vague figure. The next room that Maya and Mai entered was pretty small. Right I have claustrophobia. I kind of forgot about it. Maya thought as she started to internally panic. Then a random black figure with glowing red eyes jumped out from the middle of nowhere and both girls screamed. Then the two girls ran out of the haunted house and stopped halfway down the street. “Let's never go there again.” Mai panted.
“Agreed.” Maya stated. “Well. See you soon Mai.”
“You too Maya.” Mai spoke. The girls then went on their separate ways home.

There were many demonstrators near my house once. About it there was someone on a dais speaking about it and it was a fallout news to many people. Some were revered of what the government has said. Since some people were revered about it others were turmoil. There were arguments and many were contradicting others. So because of that it was deteriorating. Then people conjectured that maybe the idea isn’t that bad and so eventually it all stopped.

Once there was a large amount of demonstrators near a hutong so I wondered what was going on. I found out that they were opposing against the corruption with the government. Me being claustrophobic, I didn't really like them there when I was going home. But then, the government contradicted the opposition and lied about no doing it so there was very wild turmoil. Then, after 2 weeks, they decided to re-stage. Hundereds of people gathered in a dais and help up signs saying "WE PAY TAXES AND YOU GIVE VAGUE ANSWERS" Than, the restaging payed off. After 4 months of demonstartion, the people got what they want.
