Today, students continued learning about GCF and LCM. They are learning to distinguish the difference between multiples and factors, which ultimately comes down to language. Students must understand math language in order to complete questions properly. Later, Mr. Bains taught a lesson on the art of persuasion and using their voice to persuade others. Later, they learned about Wasilly Kandinsky and colour theory. Tomorrow, they will continue learning about using 'COLOUR' in their artwork.

LEARNING:
1.) MATH: Complete LCM worksheet. Mark and correct at home.

2.) SCIENCE: Responding to Quotes (due tomorrow)

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, we continued reading 'ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S'. Your writing assignment today will be evaluated on FreshGrade tomorrow for your parents to see.
Which character do you identify with most in the story. In your paragraph, explain in detail why you connect with this person.
You will write a paragraph and follow all criteria points below in order to receive 'EXTENDING'.LEARNING INTENTION: I can make personal connections to characters from 'ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format:
- engaging hook
- body with supporting sentences (examples, quotes, statistics, points, etc)
2.) Includes at least two 'TEXT TO SELF' connections using your personal background knowledge. This must be explained in detail and not simply stated.
3.) Use at least 3 transition words from this list.
4.) Check to see you have included everything from criteria points #1-3 above.
5.) Check your work for the conventions/givens (capitals, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling).
6.) You must also edit/revise/rewrite your original paragraph based on a self-assessment of the above criteria. This means, you must do the following:
- Post 2 things you need to improve on your paragraph.
- Edit/revise your original paragraph and it must show your improvements.
- All three posts must be on the same stream. Reply to your original paragraph with your self-assessment and revised version.

First to par!!!

So similar... I would say I'm a lot like Carley. Now you may be asking, ReAlLy?!?!? Let me explain. So as you have probably already noticed Carley lies ALOT, and yes I do lie but not ALOT. In more detail I only tell white lies, lies that are not harmful, while Carley on the other hand lies about all her character flaws and things she does not like.

Carley does not get comfortable fast what so ever and that same goes to me. The only difference is that I never EVER EVER get used to adults!

Carley has taken basket ball lessons before, and so have I.

Lastly, Carley does weird things to kill time and I'm no different. for example i count things around a room or play with my fingers.

A book that explains the story of a little girl that finds a new life in a foster home, she finds what it means to have a family and what it's like to have a mother that cares. Everyone in the story has their own special traits, some our more so funny than others, some are conservative and some are introverted, etc. I believe to find myself to be quite similar to Carley. I don't have a problem like Carley's, but the life she lives with Adam and Michael Eric, is similar to the one I have with my cousins. I have a lot of younger cousins that like to play and ask questions. Though sometimes it can be troubling and distracting, at the end of the day, I truly am very lucky to have so many cousins that care and like to play with me. Moreover, my cousins each have their own personalities and characteristics, they all enjoy different things and they each attain their own hobbies. As a matter of fact, a lot of my cousins speak Cantonese, it can sometimes be difficult to understand them as I was educated at an International school, my cousins tend to help me with the little English that they know, teaching me a range of vocabulary. With all the different traits and hobbies that they have, it helps introduce me to a wider part of life.

I think that I could improve on my introduction, you may not notice it, but as the writer, I noticed that when we write about the book 'One For The Murphys', my introductions have a lot of repetition. In my past PARs on this subject, they all start with a little description about the book. I think I can improve by adding more details and change the description I write about Carley in my introduction.

My Revised Version:
A sly girl that understands so much but has never gotten physical contact with it, Carley Connors is a daughter of a mother that simply doesn't care. Her mother goes to the hospital and Carley is sent to live with a foster family. There, she learns what it's like to have active siblings that love running around and playing, she makes friends, and moreover, she learns what it's like to have a mother that is constantly worried about her, happy and protective of her. Everyone in the story has their own background stories, they all have their own specialties, personalities and characteristics. I find myself to be quite similar to Carley. I don't have a problem like Carley's, but the life she lives with Adam and Michael Eric, is similar to the one I have with my cousins. I have a lot of younger cousins that like to play and ask questions. Today we continued to read the “One for the Murphy”. Here are my opinions. I identify Mrs. Murphy the most because I think Mrs. Murphy are very kind to Carley although Carley is not her own daughter. And she can let Carley from dislike her to like her. After all, Carley were very upset when her mother has seriously ill. But Mrs. Murphy always encourage her and Carley finally cheer up. even find so many friends in the school. The most surprised thing was Carly wanted to make a Mother’s Day card for Mrs. Murphy although she is not her real mother! I witnessed the different of Carley. That is my opinions. Who do I connect with the most in “One for the Murphy’s”? Well, firstly I don’t think I connect with Carley, because she is a foster kid and I am not, and she only has one friend and lies about herself a lot, so that doesn’t remind me of myself. Secondly, I don’t really connect with the mom because I don’t really know anything about that relates to me except how she loves her family a lot and so do I, but I think most people do, so that is not really a deep connection. Thirdly, I don’t really connect with Daniel, except for the fact that I am the worst in my basketball team. And I don’t really know much about Mr. Murphy or the two kids. But if I had to choose, I would say that I connect the most with... Ms. Murphy!!! I think I connect the most with... Ms. Murphy!!! I feel like I connect the most with her because she loves her family a lot and she tries to be kind to them. Like for example, how she was proud of Daniel when he was doing well in basketball. Have you ever read the book One For The Murphy's? I am making a connection to the main character,(Carley) and when she avoided to talk with Mrs. Murphy because of what she said to Carley. I thought of me trying to avoid talking with my parents when things didn't go the exact way with them. Connections are essential to understand big ideas. In the book One For the Murphy, I made a connection to the main character,(Carley) when she avoided to talk with Mrs. Murphy because of the accident with Carley one day before and it reminded me of me trying to avoid talking with my parents when things didn't go the exact way I wanted with them. Also, when I read the part where like Carley was saying to her real mother that she could've been a better mom, I remembered when my sister said to my mom that she wants a better mom. I'm more similar to Carly. First Carly doesn't adapt that fast and I am also like that and Carly lies alot an I obviously can connect to that too. Second, Carly also feels like running away in awkward situations and I also feel like that sometimes. Lastly she passes the time with odds things and I also pass the time by fidgeting with something too.

Making connections to characters in books is a great way to understand it better. I think the character that I relate to the most is Carley because I don't really relate to any of the characters but i have the most in common with Carley. Carley has a (foster) sibling that she does not like very much, at least for now, who is Daniel. In addition, she is strong and tries not to let insults bother her at all. Overall, Carley is the person I identify the most with because we have the most in common.

Throughout the book, I have made many connections and inferences. I connected with Daniel the most, he is the older brother. First and foremost, the experiences that he had with his little brothers, I had with had my little sister. For example, he reads books to brothers. I have been forced to endure many long minutes of reading to my little sister. But also his brothers are energetic. My sister can also be a bit overly excited and at times a bit much. Honestly, I do love my sister, but she’s just so much to deal with. And as we can see in the story, Daniel’s brothers are also a bit much. We can see that they are always fooling around with each other, and they’re always doing something. Whether it’s something that’s wanted or something that’s not. To bring me to my last point, Daniel has to set an example for his brothers. I hope to be a good role model in school so that my sister can also work hard to achieve good grades. 1) I thinks that I made a few good points and my structure for my paragraph was ok. It was not perfect but still.

Do you think you could be one of the Murphy’s? Have you ever related to one of the characters? One of the Murphy’s, a book that’s honest and has real humor that is yet emotional too. I actually made two connections myself, apparently all from Carley. (I guess I think more like her?) The first connection I made was when she was reading/taking care of Michael and Adam. I don’t have a sibling of my own (which I’m thankful for) but my parents often bring me to their friends house and they have younger children, usually 75% of the time I enjoy it but sometimes I feel a bit out of place and like I’m taking care of them instead of hanging out. As well as thinking things over and over. I tend to over think things (especially at night when I am trying to sleep) because I’m kinda negative so I always end up thinking of the outcome when it’s not a big deal. For example, if I got in a fight with a friend of mine, I’ll think of multiple different arguments, but all the “most likely ones” are negative, and I can’t fall asleep in the end. Overall, I’m actually a lot more like Carley than I thought I would ever be.

The learning intention was to write the connections you had with the characters in ‘One of the Murphy’s’, and I think that I did okay in trying to write out what connections I had with the characters. I think what I did best was in describing how I connected with the characters, but I could have written it a lot better. I think I could have used more interesting transition words. I had a vision for how it would transition but I didn’t know how to write it out so that was a shame (and yes, I was following the transition words we could use). (And just overall grammar choices.)

(I hope I’m not supposed to write this in paragraph form because I’m not writing in paragraph form lol.)

Today, when Mr. Hong was reading the book called One For The Murphy's out loud, I found that one character in the book has a lot in common with me. Well, the character that I am talking about is Carly. While listening to the book, I found out that Carly doesn't really like to talk about what she likes or wants. I find that similar to me because when I try to ask for something that I want, I am always thinking about how they will respond to my ideas. My second connection with Carly is that she doesn't really cry that much. I know sometimes that when you are very sad or someone bullies' you, you want to get those tears out. But I don't really cry in front of people or in public because I feel that it makes it really awkward and a lot of people just stands all around you. I still remember that when I was around 6 I had to do surgery on my hand. It was kind of painful because when they ejected me with this long needel thing to make my hand to make my hand num, it

The first thing that I think I can improve in my paragraph is adding more detailed sentences. Detailed sentences can make the reader more interested in your paragraph

Have you ever made a connection of the characters from One For The Murphy’s? Well I know I definitely have! In some ways, I connect with Carley, in other ways, not so much. I’ll get to that in a bit about what I mean but firstly, some reasons why I don’t connect to Carley is that she’s a foster girl and her origin of family is very difficult and corrupt. My family is a loving family which is why I am so thankful and pleased with my conditions of living. Which is a big reason because background knowledge matters so much when it comes to someone’s personality. Now the reason why I do connect with Carley is that while reading the book, I realized that Carley doesn’t very much cry, she’s a tough and independent girl. Which I believe I can relate to very much. At times I can be quite sensitive but mostly I keep my emotions to myself and never really cry in front of people only when it’s absolutely necessary. Secondly, another reason why I may connect with Carley is that I noticed she likes to run away or avoid her problems/issues which I think is very much like me. I don’t like handling/dealing with my problems so I just push them to the side which I am still trying to learn from. Overall, I don’t have much in common with Carley but these two connections have stood out to me the most!

What personality do you think fits you? For me I'd find myself weird and joyful! If I were to pick a character that fits me in "ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S", I'd pick Michael or Adam. I'm very crazy like them. Though I don't share the same interests like cars or superheroes, I would say I'm pretty crazy. (mostly at home) When I was little I was exactly like Adam and Michael because I was crazy than ever and I would make up dumb questions like "What do Police Officers do?" When I clearly knew what they did. I still do that sometimes but not as often. I really like Adam and Michael's personality because they're really funny and kind of dumb. I'm glad I have a personality like this because it helps me look on the bright side more! This book has been extremely interesting and I am excited to read more about it!

SELF ASSESSMENT

One thing I can work on is my hooks. Sometimes I have trouble finding a good hook to grab in readers. When I do, the hook isn't much of a hook.
I can also work on my concluding sentences that wrap up my writing. I mostly have trouble on that because I don't know what I should do to end a sentence.
Lastly I think that I should use more interesting words. Too many isn't necessarily good so I want to try finding interesting words in the right spots to make my paragraph even better.

If I were to pick a character that fits me in "ONE FOR THE MURPHY'S", I'd pick Michael or Adam. I'm very wacky like them. Though I don't share the same interests like cars or superheroes, I would say I'm pretty crazy. (mostly at home) When I was little I was exactly like Adam and Michael because I was crazy than ever and I would make up dumb questions like "What do Police Officers do?" When I clearly knew what they did. I still do that sometimes but not as often. I really like Adam and Michael's personality because they're really whimsical and kind of dumb. I'm glad I have a personality like this because it helps me look on the bright side more! I think we should all be glad we have personalities. If we didn't, what would a person look like and talk like without a personality. I don't think they'd even be a person. If you could pick any personalities to have, would you keep your current one or a different one?

Connections are difficult to make, at least for me and especially with this story. I don’t really connect with anyone in this story but I kinda have a connection with Mrs Murphy. One time a few years ago my family took care of some kids because her mom was in the hospital so she had no one to look after her kids. Second Mrs Murphy took care of Carley while her mom was in hospital too. So that is a reason Mrs Murphy is similar to me. Additionally she always wants people to be happy just like me, I am a very sensitive person so when someone is treated poorly I feel upset. “The most important things in life is the connections you make with others.”

The book “One for the Murphys” has a lot of connections for me, but the character i relate to the most is Carly. One reason is because Carly went to a new school and felt scared and I came to a new school in grade 5 and I felt nervous too. Another reason is because Carly hides stuff from people because she’s scared of what people will think of her and I also hide stuff from people because i’m scared if they’re homophobic or transphobic. Another reason is that Carly and I both lie a lot, although Carly lies about big things but I lie about small things for no reason. I’d say I’m quite like Carley. People who know me may not think of that, however when I’m around strangers I usually don’t like talking which causes a very awkward moment where the two (or more) of us just stand there. Carley may take this further though; she probably wouldn’t like any social interacting with strangers. Another reason I’d say I’m like Carley is that she's gotten tougher and learned more through experience, just like me. Another connection I can make with is Mr. Murphy. He’s a hard-working man who takes care of everyone. Just like my dad, who works an astonishing 12 hours on most days. He always still squeezes time in to teach me math and other things. Have you ever made a connection of the characters from One For The Murphy’s? Well I know I definitely have! In some ways, I connect with Carley, in other ways, not so much. Some reasons why I don’t connect to Carley is that she’s a foster girl and her origin of family is very difficult and corrupt. My family is a loving family which is why I am so thankful and pleased with my conditions of living! Which is a big reason because background knowledge matters so much when it comes to someone’s personality. The reason why I do connect with Carley is that while reading the book, I realized that Carley doesn’t very much cry, she’s a tough and independent girl. Which I believe I can relate to very much. At times I can be quite sensitive but mostly I keep my emotions to myself and never really cry in front of people only when it’s absolutely necessary. Secondly, another reason why I may connect with Carley is that I noticed she likes to run away or avoid her problems/issues which I think is very much like me. I don’t like handling/dealing with my problems so I just push them to the side which I am still trying to learn from! Overall, there are many other things that I connect with Carley but these two connections are the biggest similarities between us and they have stood out the most to me! Instead, I believe that I connect with Toni the most. Firstly, the way Toni behaves and thrives in life is very similar to mine. Both of us are extroverts who can communicate and socialize with people we never met before. I can also relate to what she thinks about people around her and people like Carley's mother. In conclusion, the way Toni views the world and behaves is the most similar to mine, therefore I'm able to connect to what she thinks. Over the past couple of weeks we have be reading a book called "One for the Murphy's" and I have had a connection with the main character Carley Conners. You might be wondering why would I connect with Carley. Well I ma tell you why,1.) do you remember when Carley called ms Mackavoy in confusion than she got this sick feeling in her stomach that she has messed things up than me Mackavoy came over and it just messed things up even more, yea that sounds a lot like me I mess things up than some how mess things up even more.2.) In the story I noticed how Carley doesn't really cry she is a tough and independent girl, I can relate to that because I have hit some rough times and I don't really cry in front of people instead I just bottle up my feelings but sometimes it just over flows and you understand form there. I barely know anything about the story and its characters so far and I can’t really relate to any of the characters. If I had to on the very little knowledge that i have, Carley is the character that I understand the most. Even though i haven’t experienced or know much about her life with her mom, I can understand how she would feel about her mom. Carley has seen what a loving family looks like and now knows that her mom did not love her the way Ms. Murphy dose, however, she is still Carley’s mom and there is still a connection there.
