Today, students had a busy day of learning. They worked hard on their French projects that they will present this Wednesday. They learned more about positioning and strategy in badminton. In Math, they learned how to use integer chips and number lines when adding negative integers. In the afternoon, students learned about digital citizenship, more specifically, about the role of social media. We will be diving deeper into this topic as we near the end of the school year as it will help prepare them for high school. At the end of the day, we reviewed speech criteria and went over the instructions for 'SPEECH FEST'.

IMPORTANT:
1.) AT HOME CONFERENCES: Be sure to complete these with your parents. Upload your behaviour checklist and conference handout signed/initialed to Freshgrade. Post a paragraph on how it went and explain what you did and questions that your parents asked you.

LEARNING/PLANNER:

Social media. It has been revolving around everyone constantly and has grown exponentially for the last decade. But how does it actually affect you and the relationships with the people around you? Social media is a mixed bag of positive and negative impacts; while it may benefit some people, there’s no doubt that it is harming someone out there in the world too. Starting with the benefits, social media is a conventional tool that can help people stay in touch with each other even when they are physically apart. For example, if you have relatives on the other side of the world, social media can help you and your relatives stay up to date and maintain close connections. However, social media can also deteriorate relationships and affect friendships negatively. For instance, jealousy is an often emotion someone feels when they are on social media. How so? Bringing this into a thought experiment, let’s say that you just saw a post of your friends from another school going out for bubble tea together; this makes you think why they have such a good life, but you don’t. This would most likely make you feel left out and envious. Eventually, relationships may even break up because you are constantly comparing your friends’ lives and yours. Then, what are some methods to help make your experience on social media positive? One of the best ways to avoid jealousy and envy is to tell yourself that they are simply posting all the good things that happen in their life. It is not because they have a better life than you but because they omit the bad events in their life. With this constant mindset, you will understand that social media is not a depiction of what is actually going on in your life, but a minimal glance of the best moments. However, with this "online world's" popularity skyrocketing in the past few years, many people are getting heavily affected by it, both positively and negatively. Firstly of all, social media can affect someone's relationships with others by allowing them to communicate with their existing friends online and meeting new people. To illustrate, if somebody can't hang out with their friends in person for some reason, then they can text, facetime, and call them to keep in touch without even leaving their home. By contrast, social media also has many negative effects on people, especially teenagers. For instance, these online platforms can make people feel anxious because they're seeing posts, photos, and videos other people are posting. This makes them feel pressured to post something "worthy" or trendy as well. Social media will only promote competitiveness between friends instead of encouraging friendship and support. What's social media? Social media is a bunch of websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Even though I used social media, I learned that social media is very addictive and can effect relationships between people. Some people may feel pressured to check social media and get distracted. Sometimes on social media if you get distracted and start scrolling it can be addictive which is bad. It does have positive and negative impacts, you just have to learn to balance it out and spend time doing other things.

Social media is basically something like YouTube, twitter, twitch, discord, and Instagram. Social media is mostly about communicating to people and your friends if they have a Social media account. More than 4.62 billion people use social media but most people think that social media is something that is fun for them but there are bad causes of social media that you may never know.

Social media has lots of P*dophiles (people that ask children for personal information), scammers, people that randomly slur to you if you are from a foreign country or if you are disabled, and also fake emails that you think they are your friends. Lots of fake news also popped up through social media when Russia vs Ukraine started. I learned 2 things that social media affects relations as if you are having a bad day you would see lots of your friends having a good day and you might feel unfair and some people posting may cause anxiety mostly if you are a teenager.

Social media only boosts you into having a cyber war.

I now understand that Social media has more negative effects on you rather than positive effects.

For instance, social media makes it easier to communicate with your friends and family, which can strengthen relationships due to the added communication. On the other hand, it can discourage communication. This is in the sense that people won’t feel the need to communicate in person because they already talk via social media. A second con is cyber-bullying. Because bullying online can be anonymous, people are no longer afraid of the consequences. Sadly, said cyber-bullying can lead to depression, and even suicide. Today, we also learned how social media can make people feel left out, or jealous when they see others having fun without them. Personally, social media has definitely affected my family’s relationships with one another. There is both less communication, and prohibited usage of social media. The latter has led to going behind another’s back, and trust issues. Moving forward, I feel that I can do better to get the best out of social media by putting a time limit to my use of social media, aside from homework. Social media is fine to use, but some people have a hard time controlling how much time and what they do. I learned that social media affects our lifestyle meaning things like trends. If the trend is something you don't want to do, You feel like you would be the most unpopular and change your lifestyle just because of something someone said online. Another thing I learned is how addicting it is. For example, Discord is an app that everyone in school uses. On the school server, there are these things called bots. One specific bot called Dank Memer, is extremely addicting because it's all make money, steal from others, be the best in the server. But social media has benefits as well. Such as, seeing what your family or friends are up to, Or contacting them. Social media can be used in many different ways. Its just our choice of how we are going to use it.

What is digital citizenship? It is to teach students to use technology safely and responsibly. In class, I learnt that digital citizenship is not just about apps like discord, YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook… Also, the things you post online can affect what a person’s feeling. Sometimes, stuff posted on the internet can affect some people. An example is when you are already feeling bad and tired today. Then, on the Internet, you saw your best friends going to a movie without telling you. You would feel sad and angry. And this might affect the rest of your day. You might not be able to focus because you’re only thinking of what you saw on the internet. That might affect certain relationships with your friends. They are called “red flag feelings”. One strategy you can use to move forward to get the best out of social media is to try to ignore any posts that make jealousy, just tell pretend that you never saw and pretend that you don’t care. Then, they will stop trying to brag to you because they know you don’t care. Though some people was only trying to find people that have certain traits, like trying to make friends. "Social media." A phrase recognizable to most people around the world. It's estimated that almost 4 billion people around the world use social media, using apps such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Youtube, etc. Social media plays a huge part in our lives, both affecting us negatively and positively. So, how does social media affect our relationships with friends and family? In-person meetings are very beneficial for not only your mental health but also social skills. However, social media draws us away from that. Becoming addicted to your device(s) can cause you to loose many social skills, and affect your relationship with friends and family. Many teenagers have stated that even around their friends, they will continue to be on their phone, rather than talking and interacting with each other. Everything is online. Texting instead of talking and FaceTiming instead of meeting up. Many people now have the mindset of "why go through all the trouble to be in-person when you can just do it online?" Not only this, but also conflict and disagreements are more likely to happen online. If your friends were to go out without you and post about it, you may feel left out, hurt, or mad. While their intentions may not have been to hurt you, there is no clear way to tell. This is tied with miscommunication. Miscommunication affects relationships in many ways. Not only can you not express yourself enough online, it is hard to show your feelings through a screen, which may cause unnecessary conflict to your relationships with friends and family. But, after all this negativity, how can we make the best out of social media? For me, I think we shouldn't just look at the way everyone portrays themselves on social media. Social media is fine to use but the affects can really harm you. Although, the use of social media can be entertaining and fun there is many problems about social media people don’t talk about. There is postive and negative outcomes from the use of social media. For example, a positive outcome can be something like connecting with your friends if you dont have the time to meet up. Maybe it could even help you let your friends know when to meet up like what time and what day. Even though I just talked about the positives some of the negative outcomes can affect your relationships. The internet can have a horrible impact on people when most of them don’t really pay attention to real life they like to rely more on likes and followers because every single feeling is that getting likes and followers makes them feel good and special. So, they don’t really think that real life situations belong to them in a way. But anyways, back to the postive outcomes one strategy I will use going forward for a more positive outcome is making sure not to think that this person’s personality that they’re posting online is really their personality. So, in conclusion, I think social media is nice but you really should watch out for the negative and positive impacts coming from the internet.

Social media. When you hear the word “social media” the first few things that you may think of are TikTok, Snapchat, twitter, instagram and etc. although these types of medias keeps you entertained, but did you know that these can also affect your mental health, and who you are? Let’s say, you download an app. You create an account, and post a video. You get your first like and comment, oh wow! You think to yourself that I should post more videos to gain more popularity. That’s a sign that you’ve probably gotten hooked already, which that’s what they want. Although you may be saying “isn’t that literally the entire point?” Well, yes, yes it is. But, staying on these apps has down sides as well. Depression, cyber bullying, anxiety, and even horrible sleep patterns. A few ways to quit this addiction is just deleting the app. You sure will have the urge to re download it again, but think to yourself. What other benefits do you gain for this? Is it more of a daily routine to do this? Have you been so caught up that you’ve stopped doing your daily activities, skipped things in the middle of the days just for this specific thing? That’s what you should think to yourself. I’m not saying that it’s not okay to browse on the internet, but many of the population is an addict to these types of things, games, and scrolling through posts, it’s seriously ruining their social life, which not not having the sense to come back to reality. That’s, what social media can do to you.

Social media is good some times but there is always that one person that just ruins everything (not me shut up) there are meany ways to talk to people if it's through video games or twitter social media good but not always so social media ok stay with friends go touch grass and don't stay up playing Fortnite until 5am
