Monday: Choice and Autonomy

Our book has arrived!

During term 1, the Division 4 students worked on their research skills and learned how to find reliable information through active research. They learned that you have to take many aspects of a source of information into account when determining its reliability. All year, they have worked collaboratively and have learned that they all benefit when they work with others. They are currently working on a chemistry project where they have been given more choice and autonomy in how they present their learning. They have another day or so to go and I'm looking forward to seeing what they create!

1.) MATH 6: No homework.
MATH 7: Any assigned work.

2.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

All Grade 6/7 students have been learning about scales and ratios. Most of you are currently working on creating a scale drawing of an image that you chose. Watch this video and explain in your own words how scales are useful.
List 3 examples of where scales are used in the real world!

Scales are very useful because you can make literally anything bigger with it, either a drawing or a house.
We can use this in real life in these situations...
1) building a house
2) building an airplane
3) making a drawing bigger

Scales are a way of measuring things. What a scale does is it makes it easier to measure things, and then double, triple, etc. 3 ways it can be helpful for are: for and actual artist, if they make the picture idea on a small peice of paper and then expand they will have to use a scale. If you are a construction worker you would use a blue print and after you look over it you have to make it into the actual building. Lastly, a carpenter, because you have to have a scale of the entire house before you can lay everything on.

Ways that it could be usful is things like architecture and map making. Ways we use it real life is television because when they record it it is smaller then the tv. Anouther is maps because if all maps wern't scaled down then that would be bad. And last but not least architecture because the house is scalled down to fit a piece of paper.

Well ways we can use a scale is for carpenters because there is a lot a scaling because you have to scale you have to for example scale a chair so it does not wobble and that is the same with engineers. and finally, to expand something if it were a square you would need to expand all the sides equally.

A scale can be useful in many ways. There are 4 different types of scale measurement they are scale, scale factor, scale drawing, and scale model. A scale is used to measure big objects and small objects. Scale factor is when objects is too small or big to be drawn on actual paper. Scale drawing is when 1 CM = 20 feet in a smaller drawing. A scale model is a little model of what ever you build and you can also, show what the finished product is and looks like.

Example 1: An architect might build a scale model of what a house might look like so the owners can decide whether to buy it or not.

Example 2: A person might want to know how much there apples weigh so they can figure out the price.

Example 3: You might want to know how much a rock weighs for a mining operation.

Scales are used in all sorts of different ways. Also it shows things that are too small or large to be shown in a real life drawing, it also shows the outlining of things such as a house, or a car so on. Also a landscaper will show how they will make the landscape.

Scales help in the building industry because you can make blue prints to help you know what to build. Like when they design a building they use a blue print so they know what looks like what. Examples of what you can use scales for are: Making blue prints, Making drawings bigger, and to make maps so you know where to go.

Scales can be used in building sculptures or buildings such as houses apartments and like in Vancouver high-rises. And they can be used in maps when you are like going to re-size a map you need to use a scale for it, and one last thing there is, is a drawing because you need to use a scale if you want to make it bigger or if you want to make it smaller.

If you want to make something real size but you want to draw it out first you can use a scale then start buliding the actual thing but use the scale so you have a idea how big the object will be.
Also your drawing will be way neater with a scale because you know wear everything needs to be and you can draw one box at a time it is way neater with a scale. Lastly a scale can help with learning about scales will help in the future because scales are on so many things like maps blueprint and more.

Scale allows you to draw a house and a car and your family on a page when you are in grade 1.
Now that we are reviewing scale in math; we know what the name of the concept is; and we know that you would have to scale all things in the drawing on the same scale.
Having a scale drawing of your house and furniture allows you to move the furniture around to choose positions without the work.

We can use ratios and percentages in life to help with our jobs or even just to have fun drawing. Think of it. You use a grid and things almost ever day! Look inside your calculator. There is a pressure point grid object inside behind the buttons.

Scales are useful because it can be used to draw or build build replicas of things that are too big or too small to be put in actual size. It is useful for architects who are drawing blueprints, the people who make maps of the world, and for maybe car designers.

Scales are very important. I think this because when we draw things, they may be too small or too big to draw on a piece of paper. Jobs that use scales are architects, geographers, and plenty of more. Because you can't draw the actual size of a house. In addition, a globe isn't the actual size of the Earth. Also, a map has things like 1 cm = 100 kilometers. With models, it helps the people really visualize what it the project will look like. To illustrate, a builder makes a model of a building they are going to make.

SCALES ARE USED -
1.) When a landscaper is working on a yard. He/she cannot draw out how big the landscape will actually be.
2.) On the mall directory maps, it shows where everything are. But that's not how big the mall actually is.
3.) When artists draw buildings like the Eiffel Tower, or the Statue of Liberty, they don't draw the exact size of the building.

Scales can be very useful. They are used to find out if the weight of something is to heavy or to light, how small or big something is, or even figuring out distances between places.

Three ways scales are used in the real world are; Doctor Offices to check on your weight, Architecture in finding good structural designs, and seeing if going to a place on a vacation is worth it depending how far away it is.

Scales can be helpful because you can weigh something with it, the distance between two things and you can draw small diagrams but then times it by a certain number to get the life size estimate.

scales can be used in:
A car ( the distance/miles of how far you have gone)
Construction workers (make a small diagram of a scale then times it by a certain number to get the real life size)
and illustrators (if they want to draw a fly they could use a scale to make it bigger)

They are helpful because people can use them to draw, even though I personally don't.
Also, I'm not going to need to use scales in my life so I find them useless.
