Monday: Q.W.I.L. Reading Strategies

We learned about several different reading strategies in class today. We focused on 'QUESTIONING' (simple vs deep) and identifying 'EXQUISITE LANGUAGE' in our readings. The posters are above the whiteboard

1.) WRITE A RESPONSE ON OUR CLASS SITE: We started the Global Read Aloud with our partner classes in Surrey, Ottawa, and Illinois today. We completed 'QWILS' for the first read today with an emphasis on the 'Q - QUESTIONING' and the 'L - Exquisite Language'. Post 2-3 of your deep Q's and 1 of your L's. Once you see that one of your classmates has responded, please do your best to reply to some of their questions.

2.) Global Read Aloud Blogging Site - http://onlyivan.weebly.com Be sure to complete your 'PREDICTIONS' and 'SELF INTRODUCTIONS' if you haven't done so yet. Make sure you are posting in the proper sections.

3.) MATH - Chapter 3 Lesson 4 Questions (textbook)

I think that they picked Ivan out when he was a baby and his parents just left him out because they were out hunting and the humans saw an opportunity to take him and make money off him by putting him in the circus.

1.)Majestic is a very interesting word I find. It means having or showing impressive beauty or dignity.

I think that Ivan thought it wasn't as easy as it looks because it looks like he just sits there but really he's fighting to survive in the small area he has to live in.

@ Cole - I think it was 'Not as easy as it looked' because to stay trapped up inside a cage is like being in prison, especially when you have no family to care for or to communicate with. If I were an animal, I don't think I could stay trapped in a cage for 27 years.

Why do you think that Mack usually advertises Ivan as this wild Gorilla and why he calls Ivan the mighty silverback.

How do you think Ivan ended up in the circus he's in.

I liked the way the author used the word majestic in the sentence.

@ Sponge Bob - I think that Ivan said 'I think people are lousy hunters'' because they have to use weapons to hunt and they don't always hunt to kill, but they hunt to capture and display. What are your thoughts on this?

Questions :

1.) Why do you think that the mall circus treats animals horribly. Like they leave them out to dry.

2.) Why do you think Ivan is called the " Freeway Gorilla, " and why? ( This question was my first one )

Language :

The vast treeless parking lot. Though that sentence isn't long, it has a lot of meaning. It's also sad, because it sort of shows that we don't care about the environment.

3)Why dont they just get another gorilla and let Ivan live in the jungle ?

language: domain that was a powerfull word to me and a domain is like your house where you live.

i think ivan got into the circus by getting his family taken away from him. that i think got ivan to follow the humans then he was taken.
then they let ivans family back out into the wild. after that ivan was
then taken to the circus and became the ape on exit 8.

The One And Only Ivan: 3 Questions and 1 Exquisite Language

One of my questions are, how are gorillas related to humans? It is a deep question because, some might say it isn't true, some can say they punched each others faces, there is more than 1 possible answer.
My second question is, do you think Ivan the gorilla likes his job? Again, the owners would "say of course" the audience might notice he doesn't, there could be more than 1 possible answer again, depends on Ivan.
My third and final question is why do you think the owner of the animals treat them bad? There is more than more answers! The animals don't listen, the animals don't do their tricks right, the animals eat too much food...
My Exquisite Language is majestic, it sounds nice, it looks nice, and it describes nice.

@ April - I was wondering that questions myself. Why would somebody give a gorilla a bat? Perhaps to engage the tourists? I wonder if they gave him the bat and ball to see if he would actually try to play baseball on his own inside of his tiny cage. It makes me sad just thinking about Ivan being trapped with a mural of a jungle painted on his wall. :( (Sad Face)

Question 1- What is Ivan's job in the arcade, and why? Does it make the arcade more popular for example?

Question 2- I wonder what to much gorilla and not enough human means. Is it meaning his personality?

Question 3- Why does Ivan feel almost upset from the nicknames people gave him. He just likes Ivan, so why are they "Labeling" him in the first place? Also, what does the Freeway Gorilla and the Ape at Exit 8 mean? Do you think they might have over reacted the description in those nick names? Why or why not?

Question 4- I wonder how Ivan is feeling with no family, no natural
home, no PROTECTION... for twenty-seven years.

Wow! - A part in the novel where it made me say "Oh wow!", is when I found out gorillas arms outstretched can be taller than the tallest person alive!

Image- I got an image of Ivan's domain. How its just wiring and cages just like a prison. With no actual trees, no actual grass, no calmness, peace, and serenity. How the place smells of a thousand hands. It sounds more a more "Mechanical" place, rather than a natural habitat. I mean, those different animals shouldn't be in the same habitat, it just isn't right. They were born in different habitats for a reason. Some needing warm weather and some needing hot. You cannot just force animals of different species to come together for our own amusement.

Language 1- Patience. Ivan has been in this prison of a home for 27 and counting. I think it is sad once you figure out the meaning of this word and how it relates to Ivan.

Language 2- Powerful sentence. "The elephants look off into the distance so they won't see the humans who want to see them". It is almost as if the elephants are teasing the humans, more than the humans are teasing them.

Why do you think the owner displayed Ivan as a vicious gorilla even though he is calm?

Frantically I think this as one of the most strong words because he uses it as a adjective towards the humans in a ill mannered way.

L.) What caught my eye was when Ivan said humans are lousy hunters in my opinion I think he said that because gorillas hunt by hand and stealth, were as humans hunt with guns and such.
