Monday: Speech Fest

The students revisited essay/speech structure today and brainstormed topics for Speech Fest. The topics ranged from worldly issues, such as child labour, to social acceptance in schools. Students created graphic organizers to create an organized structure of what their speeches will look like. Tomorrow, the students will watch some examples from past years and will begin working on their introductory paragraphs.

1.) MATH 6/7: Gr. 6 students, your ratio art is due tomorrow.

2.) SHOWCASED BLOGS:

Visit Rainbow Dash's website and check out her new artwork! Leave her some comments/feedback/suggestions.

3.) WRITE A RESPONSE:

Research a 2 different speeches on YouTube by well-known individuals and watch them (Eg. John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, Baz Luhman, Steve Jobs, whoever, etc)
Post the link to the best one you find and list 3 characteristics of a powerful and meaningful speech. Include the characteristic and the reason why you believe it is important to have when giving a speech.

I watched this video about Spencer West at We Day.

1. I liked how he was changing the sound of hi voice every moment, then taking a pause to make it that much powerful.
2. He never added anything extra and he was confident which never lost the audiences attention.
3. Everything he was talking about was very powerful and they had a meaning and message to almost everyone.
4. Additionally, he never lost eye contact with the audience when he spoke.

My speech that I found is about Barack Obama's speech in 2013.
Some things that I found important in this speech are:
1) I found that he pauses in a few moments. I like this because the people can think to what he is saying.
2) I also found that he had a really loud voice so the people in the back could hear him. This is important because if you do not have a loud and clear voice, the people who are far away might not hear you.
3) I also liked and found that he had hand gestures. This can help you because you can get a clearer picture of what the speecher is talking about. Like when the speecher is talking about a sun, they could point their finger and make a sun or a circle to show what a "sun" is.

-Martin luther king speech.
1) I saw that Martin speaks very loud and when he speaks he sounds really motivated into the topic he is talking about.
2) He pauses after he speaks for a good amount of time he does not talk to fast or to slow.
3) He motivates the adiance and engages them so they dont drift of he is so engaging everybody listens to him

Second to do response!

This video that i found and i thought was good was Barack Obama's Speech that he did in 2013.

I think he had a bit to many pausees.
And the hand movments or gestures did show also what he was talking about. And how the pauses lets you think about what he was talking about. His loud voice is waht caught everyonse's attention.

Those are the things I thought were important.

1.) It was a very inspiring speech. He set a goal and was determined.
2.) John F. Kennedy's voice was very powerful. He spoke in confidence.

1. This speech is very emotional and very true, One point that I found is He knew what he was talking about. That is an important point in a speech because you will not know what to talk about if you don't know your information.

2. He pause's whenever there was an end of a sentence and spoke nice and clear. This is also very important when giving a speech because you want the people to hear you and you want it to go smoothly.

3. Lastly, he has very good eye contact and hand gestures. This is important when giving a speech because normally you want to look at the speaker so you can hear them clearly. Secondly, you can give gestures to get the audience more involved.

This girl ( i don't know her name) had a speach about child slavery i found awesome that she had such a good loud vioce and was proud of herself.

Part 2
The best was gandhi's because he was all put guns blazing saying he has a right to have no religion. It was inspiring.

1. Steve Jobs spoke loudly and proudly. He wasn't afraid of what people thought of what he said.
2. He made sure that what he was saying was going to matter, he wasn't just speaking nonsense.
3. Steve Jobs stayed on topic, the topic was about how he became what he is. He didn't start talking about other random stuff.

B) 1.Obama speaks really loud so that people who are farther away can still hear him.
2.He made pauses so that what he was saying would sink in better with the people listening.

I did a speech on Winston Churchill: We shall fight on the beaches. It is slightly muffled if you listen he is talking he was about how he will do what ever it takes and as said by the title they will fight on the beaches and having confidence. I also liked how near the end how he was getting engaged with his speech he started to raise his voice which grabbed my attention. Another last point is how he was told they will lose and they will fail but he lightens the mood by saying in his speech that they are going to win the war.

I don't think I need a link for this one since the speech I choose was To this Day, since he recited it at a event, I don't have footage of that though, but this relates to my speech sooo here we go.
The three things that made it good were:
-The way he spoke
-Live he would move around a lot in a good way
-It gets the point across

2:) He has great eye contact with the crowd and can mermerize his speech word for word.

1.) after I watched this video I realised that it is very touching and meaningful, obviously he was talking about his own experience and I know that because he said "I wasn't the only kid who grew up this way", and back to my topic in order to have a great speech, you have to know what your talking about.
2.) Secondly he spoke in a very clear and loud voice to really make an effect, I know that because if he was just saying "get a better mirror, look a little closer, stare a little longer" in a very monotone voice it wouldn't have much of an effect on other people than it did when he said it loud and clear.
3.) Lastly he spoke very clearly, he didn't mumble, he didn't stop to think about his speech, he spoke clearly because he knew what he was talking about, he knew his information, I know this because if he didn't know what to say he wouldn't talk so clearly and he would make a lot of stops in his sentences and he would've had a monotone voice.

To begin with, I liked how he was speaking loudly to everyone so they could hear him. He knew what he was talking about. Next, I saw that he was engaging with the audience a lot. He kind of looks around at everyone. Last but not least, I saw that he was using a lot of gestures. It made him look very casual and not too nervous.

1.) The first thing I noticed was the power in his voice. You can clearly hear the message he is trying to tell, and the emotion he gave out about his life. This really hooks the audience into what he was saying.

2.) The tone of his voice is very clear, it's not to fast or too slow. But it's the perfect pace where you can understand every word that he is saying. There are also small pauses that create each sentence to flow together.

3.) The last thing I notice in this speech is how he doesn't go off topic and gets to the point. He doesn't go off track and cause the audience to get bored.

3 Characteristics of a Powerful and Meaningful speech is:

-He didn't stutter, even though he may have an accent, he has clear pronunciation.

-I noticed that every sentence was full, and was pulled through, he probably was a little scared but he had confidence.

-He chose a topic that he believed in, he knew that people would mock him for what he spoke about but he wasn't afraid, he didn't care.
