MONDAY: Food Webs

Today, I had the pleasure of hearing the words of a student taking ownership of his learning. James came up to me this morning during Science and asked me, "Mr. Hong, can you tell me how to improve my work?" Although he is a new to our school, he is learning.....how to learn! To all my students, keep up the awesome work that you do every day!

1.) MATH 6:

Multiples/Factors/Primes/Composites Chapter test tomorrow.
For review, scroll back over the past few weeks of posts and watch the review videos that were posted.

2.) SCIENCE: Ecosystem web projects are due tomorrow.

3.) FIELD TRIP:

Bring $3 if you are renting skates and $1.50 if you need to rent a helmet.
HELMETS ARE MANDATORY!
If your parents haven't filled out the permission form yet, they MUST do this or you will be unable to participate. Parents, click here!

Parents, we will leave the school at 11am and will be skating from 11:45am until 12:45pm.

List two things you have learned about working with soapstone.

Two things I have learned about while working with soapstone were:
1.) always listen to the teacher before you start
2.) use the right tools for the job, do not use a saw to file
The biggest challenge for me right now is probably getting the webbed feet good enough without making them too skinny.
I am enjoying soapstone a lot and I think the whole project is worth it for it's BIG money. A lot of people who did this last year showed me their finalized soapstone projects and it looked amazing like what Ichigo has said.

soapstone
a soft rock consisting largely of talc

We jus started a new unit with Soapstone and I am enjoying it a lot. I learned that you always have to be careful when you are using the tools. The second thing I learned is that you have to use the right tools for a job. For an example, do not use a saw to file. There is a filer for that... The hardest thing I've stumbled on is drawing the actual object. Like I said before, I enjoy soapstoning because you get to chose your own animal. I also thin that the big money you put in for the project is worth it.

Working with soapstone has taught me two things. One is that you have to not give up carving no matter how hard it is and you have to be very very patient. So far, the biggest challenge has been trying to get the feet, which I did and have to now file them. I have really enjoyed soapstone art ever since we started, mostly because it's fun to do and the art looks amazing at the end.

@ Ichigo - I like how you used full sentences! One thing though, I think you should say, "First..." instead of, "One is that..." But great job otherwise!

2 things I learned about soapstone is 1.) u haft to be very patient and 2.) u haft to careful because there are fault lines. The biggest challenge so far has been, being patient with saw work. I am enjoying doing soapstone because I think it is a great opportunity to have someone coming and spend so much time to help us with it.

I have learned that carving soapstone not as easy as it looks and you need to have a lot of patients. the biggest challenge has been getting the stone to look like you picture it. I am enjoying it because it is interesting and I have never done it before.

1.) That you cannot have skinny carvings on your soapstone. (Ps. I had to restart today because of this.)

2.) That soapstone is very easy and fragile to cut wich makes it easy compared to most other stones.

3.) My biggest challenge was how long it took to cut the stone. It just seems to be realy time consuming. It's just not something I totlay will enjoy.

4.) My one thing I don't like how much time it takes to cut your negative space on the stone. What I enjoy to do is spruce things up. So I will enjoy smoothing it at the end.

Two things I learned:
1) Always try to team ever what the teacher tells us, so you are not filing with the wrong side.
2) Soapstone is the softest stone, so you have to be somewhat more careful.
The biggest challenge do far was getting the picture in the perfect position.
Personally I am not enjoying soapstone, I am really not a good artist, so this sort of art stuff isn't really super fun for me.

First I learned that you don't need to much strength to cut and saw the stone.
Second I learned that you can make almost make anything out of it.
I love mcarving soap stone because what evere you choose it will work one way r another.

@ Teddy Bear - great job on your sentence! 'Patient' and 'Patience' both have different meanings. Double check your dictionary to make sure you used the right one. :-)

Two things that I have learned about using soapstone is that you have to always keep the stone wet and watch out for fault lines.

The biggest challenge is probably carving and cutting.

I really like carving soapstone because you can let your creativity flow.

The two things that i learned from soapstone carving are,
1.) when you are carving you should know that carving the stone takes time, so don't be surprised if it takes a hull half an hour to make a small frog leg.
2.) when you ore cutting or carving don't get thinking that you are going to need to use all your strength to saw the stone when that is what the saw was made for.
The bigist challenge I have encountered in carving is the amount of negative you have to cut off to first off start to get the shape that you want... REALLY disappointing.
I am also really glad i am working with soapstone because if I didn't I would never get the chance like this.

2.) You also that you have to imagine a 3D image for your soapstone to come to life.

I like soapstone because you can create a beautiful sculpture that can be placed in your home and look like a professional stone carver made it.

1.) I have learned that you have to use up the WHOLE stone otherwise you will have a small carving and it won't work out. Also, I have learned that if you cut into fault lines then a piece may fall off that you didn't want to fall off.

2.) The biggest challenge so far for me has been drawing the animal and using the pick to carve the shape of the bear.

3.) I like soapstone because I love doing art like this!

Stuff that I learned in soap stoning is do not make the structure your carving to skinny or it could snap. Also don't make your structure to little fill out the hole side of your soap stone. I learned other things to like soap stone is fragile when you drop it. I thought it would be very hard. Also to never give up if it turns out bad thats okay. You just need to try. Soap stoning is very fun. Oh and never goof around with the tools people can get hurt. By SPB

Doing soapstone because it is fun to see what you make overall. Also I learned how to cut out feet and how to smooth the stone down. The biggest challenge that has been for me is starting on my head hy sculpture is a hippo if you were wondering.

1. I've learned that there are fault lines and cut of a mane peace. Also, I learned that a stonecutter ( saw ) is a very good saw for cutting stone because it has a wire instead of a blade
2. My biggest challenge was that I hit a fault line and my dolphins head fell off.
3. I like soapstone because grade 6's and 7's only get to do it every 2 years so were very lucky!

1) I learned that cutting in a angle that points towards someone and putting your finger under the saw/cutter is dangerous and it's not easy handling something like that.

2) My biggest challenge so far is something that I haven't learned because sometimes it's hard for me to undertstand it but also easy at the same time.

One thing I learned about soap stone is that it's really easy to cut.
One thing I'm struggling with is sketching I can't seem to get it right.
I think soap stone is fun because you learned something new.

one thing I learned is that you need to be patient not just for the sawing but the drawing t,another thing I learned is is that not every one will be at the same pace(some people might be further than you and some behind)
For me the drawing of the shape was the hardest part.
I am enjoying soap stone very much! I think I like it so much because of the experience and what it will turn into.

Two things I learned was that you have to have a lot of patience because you have wait and think a lot. Another thing I learned about soapstone is that you have to pay really good attention to the teacher or wouldn't know what to do.A challenge I have had with soapstone is try to figure out how to cut my sculpture because it is a really round and my stone is really square. I enjoy working with soapstone because you get to be really creative and for me it is trying something knew that I have never done before so, I really enjoy trying new things but it is a little hard though but over all it is really fun.

I have learned a lot while doing soapstone. For example, I now know that the wire saw is for curved cutting, and the regular saw is used for just cutting straight lines. I also know that you have to wet your stone to make sure that dust doesn't fly in your face. Even though soapstone is super fun, it was very challenging when I had to get a chunk out of the middle and it would not come, no matter how hard I sawed. All in all, I am loving soapstone. It feels so rewarding when something turns out great!

I learned that you need to be patient while working with anything and that you need to look where you saw (I cut my finger ;( it hurt ). I like soap stone because you can learn how to use tools you might incounter in you life and its just fun!

2 things I learned about soapstone,firstly that you have to be patient and not try to get everything done as quickly as you can you have to take your time. Another thing I learned is you have to be safe so you don't hurt your self so don't fool around.

The biggest challenge for me would be smoothing the rock because it takes so long to do and I is not a whole bunch of fun also it is frustrating

I love doing soapstone because we can create an animal that we chose and we can be creative.

First of all, I learned that soap stone requires a lot of patience. This is because, soap stone takes a while to carve and go through the process. Sometimes it can get really hard when you are sawing or shaping the stone. Secondly, I learned that you always need to keep your stone wet. If you don't, then the dust from your soap stone will get everywhere including your lungs. Adding on to this, I also learned that everyone works at different paces. In other words, you are not always going to be at the same stage as your neighbor. Although I think the hardest part of soap stone is getting the perfect shape. I have to admit at things like this, I am kind of a perfectionist. So, I get really annoyed when I don't carve the sculpture exactly right. I really like doing soap stone though. It's very fun and you get to make the stone in to a beautiful sculpture that you can decorate around the house. I am looking forward to how it will turn out!

I learned that Soapstone has fault lines and you need to be careful white cutting. Also how there are different levels of hardness in stones.

What's been hard so far is getting my ears perfect, since it is one of the most distinguishing features, and I just want them to look like fox ears.

I do enjoy soapstone! It's a great way to make something special and I'm happy we're able to do it.

Two things I have learned about soap stone is that it's fragile and you can't control the colour of it. The biggest challenge so far is it take a long time to saw through it. I've really enjoyed working with soap stone because it's something new and I've tried this before.
