MONDAY: TRANSLINK DEBATE

It was great seeing everyone at school today! Everyone appeared excited to be here and excited to learn! Tomorrow, we will work on our learning goals for the term and we will outline steps to achieve those goals!

During Social Studies, a question was raised in regards to current events and the current Translink vote that is looming. We spent some time critically analyzing several biased websites to make sure we were reading about both sides of the story. Before our discussion, the majority of the class was in support of a no vote. By the time we had our debate in class, the tides had changed. Tonight's post a response will be based on your individual research you complete tonight.

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work. Check your teacher's website.
MATH 7: Area and circumference worksheet. Complete all other unfinished work from the previous
class.

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: We will continue the infographic presentations on children's rights tomorrow.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

Newspaper articles are often assumed to be unbiased, however, most of the time it is clear that articles are biased to one side or the other. When an opinion is biased, it is one sided. When an opinion is unbiased, it is impartial or give both sides of the story.
1.) What is your personal opinion on the Translink debate?
2.) If you could vote, would you vote yes or no?
3.) Provide 2-3 supporting sentences that provide support for your position on the debate.
4.) Provide a question or statement to 2 other students to push their thinking.
5.) Respond to any comments/questions you receive.

I am going to try to do the post the best I can since I wasn't here today... (I am feeling better now).

In my opinion the Translink debate to raise the taxes is there is no reason to do it. With all the British Columbian's paying there taxes I think that Translike can go through without making users pay more taxes. Aswell it will not really benefit the Cloverale area due to the fact that we do not "need" more transit. Or atleast we can worry about other things the city needs however I find that there are a large amount of people increasing to take translink. I think that TransLink is just rushing to expand.

I will vote No. Due to the factors of Translink. Maybe in a few years if I find that this is nessecary I may vote yes.

Please give feedback (I hope that I did the post right).

Well for the area we live in and the age I am. If I live in downtown Vancouver and I was in University I will vote yes.

@Azbo, I don't live in that area around you, but I think your absolutely right from your post. I think us citizens should pay less either than paying more, because we need the money we earn to pay our taxes, to get our groceries, to go on business trips, and of course, family time. Along to this, I also agree that it would be more useful in the future when we really need it, and that time is not so far so we should have an early advantage by doing it now. So I vote yes.

My opinion is that if we don't have for example sky trains and I live in King George I wanna go to downtown to get to high school or university.
I'm vote yes because 1. I Might wanna meet my friend in downtown but I don't have any source to get they're but their is one source the bus first to get to king George and then jump on the sky train thanks translink.

I agree with you Goofy because in King George there are lots of over populated Skytrain stations that are bringing people around the metro-Vancouver area. Good post!

1.) I think that they should not raise taxes because first of all, some people barely make enough money to support they're family and raising taxes is going to affect them a lot. Second of all I think that they shouldn't raise taxes because as someone said today in class that building roads and highways is going to destroy a lot of animal habitats.

2.) I would vote no because why should we waste our hard earned money to destroy lots of animal homes. Anyways, the yes side is saying things like it will be a shorter commute time but it doesn't hurt to drive a couple more minutes.

I believe the government has a program to help families like that brough to them out of other well to do families. About your other reason. A yes vote is mainly to improve roads and highways already existing, offshoots of cities(suburbs) are usually the result of private contractors and big corporations. Why else do you vote no.

1) In my opinion I would vote for raising the taxes because it would help
Build Bridges and sky trains and some roads. Second it would make schools and the taxes would build some more homes and more hospitals for health.

2) I would vote yes because if they are not building more schools and roads and homes people will be ending up on the street and kids will be taken away from their family.

My personal opinion is that a yes vote is the way to go. If I could vote I would vote yes. I would vote yes so we can fix this problem before it expands and we have to pay even more (which is inevitable with the population growth rate). I think many people in the lower mainland require public transport and proper transportational infrastructure and without it our local economy would be affected, along with local businesses. The last thing influencing my vote is how small the cost is and the pros completely outweigh the cons. But that is just my opinion.

So for this debate, I think we should do it anyways so I'd vote for a Yes. Why exactly? Let me explain.

You see, we should start building on our environment early just because it can be very useful in the future. If we didn't have this then our bridges and what not would be falling down like the London Bridge. Then they'd make a new song that goes "♪This-Translink-Bridge-THingy is falling down, falling down, falling down! This-Translink-Bridge-Thingy is falling down...♪" And so on.

Second reason why is because it's just half a percent of a slight tax increase on walking or driving, It's not so bad. Even a child with at least a dollar can afford it if it was just under a dollar. Even the worlds richest man would feel like he didn't lose a cent off his money, when he did. He just doesn't know it. Now do you understand?

To conclude, as a child, your not the one paying these taxes anyways. Its your parents. And plus, if this were to remove the wildlife, they'd still be gone anyways from hunters or butchers making cows to burgers and what-not. This can help save many lives too! I'm a yes person, do you agree with me?

Hi mr hong about the textbooks could you give me a list of what topics they are on so I could choose. If possible I would like to learn about international law in socials. (More specifically war crimes, rights violations, and punishments in The Hague) Thanks again for the great opportunity.

Most of the time, people look for any sign of wild life before working on roads and bridges. The animals surely will go to safe animal shelters and live full lives.

The government is supposed to provide all transit servecices regardless to all this talk about voting for more tax. Voting yes is giving the governent more money and not what they say it is.

I my opinion I would I would vote yes, because when I'm older I don't want have the bridge under me break while I am driving across or someone I know. Also, some roads that I drive on with my parents are super bumpy and I would pay to it get fixed because no one wants to be driving and almost be thrown off the road because of some percent of people voted no. And to make my point final, the sky train is super duper busy all the time. If they could make more trains and rails we could get places faster and have less people on the same train. Same with the roads we could make more so there won't be as much traffic.VOTE YES!

My opinion would be that we had taxes because of what it does to help others. Transportation and all of the stuff that helps us survive. So if you don't want to have taxes then, have fun rotting in your grave because the longer the world runs without taxes, the world will come crumbling down. Now for the comment about where would the animals go? They can go to animal shelters and if you care for animals then, I am pretty sure so is the rest of the world. So building in the forest would mean patrols threw out the forest first for any life sources. And my vote would be for YES.
Think about what I had said and then come to the YES side before it's too late to change what has already started. Soon the NO side will take over... :(

If I could vote yes or no on the trancelink debate I would choose yes. I would choose yes because if we didn't pay taxes for then to build roads or built of modes of transportaion (car,bus ect...) because without them we would not have an efficient eat to get to far away places. Another reason why we should have taxes is because the pattullo bridge is get old and we need taxes to frix the brinbor meals a new one when the pattullo bridge Stars to crumble.

Good points but we as British Colombians are faced with increasing taxes every year on something or other, for ex. our property tax will be increasing this year too so families are always placed with increasing taxes every year.

I would vote no because people are already paying 12% taxes on good and with a family who is just having enough money to make a living its gonna be hard for them.

I'm confirmed on voting no

If they go through and the vote is yes they will build more roads destroying the wildlife and if they do where do you think the animals would go. I think it's stupid adding more tax when everything we buy has tax on it already. For groceries it's only 5% so by adding more tax some families may not be able to take care of their family because they pay an extra $12 a month and at the end they end up paying $258 a year if they vote yes.

Voting no I think would help the wildlife more. BC is known for its beautiful wildlife so if the government destroys the wildlife we won't be beautiful British Columbia. They already have 12% tax on us with that they can build roads so they don't need that extra 0.5%. That would just make life harder for those not so rich families.

Canada's economy is way different then the US. In Canada's economy we are considered wealthy so the tax must be high but they don't need to raise it just for the government.

I personally think it should raise taxes to only people that take the public transit. To the others that don't take the bus should be left alone.

If I were to vote I would say no. I think this because, it is not fair to people that don't take public transit, it can also affect wildlife and natural habbitats, and because it is bad ffor the enviourment, because new streets cause traffic congestion, which would increase the air polution.

If I could choose yes or no I will choose no b. I will choose no because all the new roads are going to take up space so they take up wild life because and it will destroy all the animals homes so the animals will have no were to live. So they will come to our house. The other reason I think no is that some family's don't have enough money or income so if you say yes to this some family's will start loosing money or can't but new stuff like sock and books because of this extra tax.

Objection! Firstly, for my personal opinion for the Translink debate, I would probably vote yes. Why? Well, since you've asked I would probably vote yes because, it will help our/ the furure by expanding or making roads more safer so that we will have less car accidents. Secondly, I would vote yes because, it will help our transportation to go faster , it will also help our future since the lowermainland is growing. Lastly, I would vote yes because, the tax we would pay would be saved so that when we retire we would get that money back again. In conclusion, I would vote yes. Will you?

I'm undecided on the translink vote. I see the points to both sides and I have strong feelings about the yes and no vote. So I'm going to talk about the yes and no vote.
The yes vote would help by making it easier to go place to place. It would really help us in on the long run too because if we don't vote yes the roads in 20 years would be packed. Also there would be a lot of cars that would harm the environment.
The no vote would help the animals because building things would flash the animals out and we would have a lot more "pest" and urban animals would be harmed too. A lot of animals would die in the process.

My choice for the Translink debate would be a yes. I think this because the roads are already crowded but if we vote yes, it will help us by open up the roads so we can get to places quicker. For example, people could get stuck in traffic on the way to work and get in trouble from their boss for not getting there on time. Being a kid, I hate long car rides and being stuck in traffic. If I could get places quicker, I would be in a better mood. Also, some of you may think that this doesn't matter since we can't drive yet. But in the future our population will grow and grow and soon enough it will be very hard to get from place to place in a timely fashion. To conclude, that is why my opinion is to vote yes. Do you agree or disagree with me?

My personal opinion is to vote for yes. If I could vote I would vote for yes because then government will develope the translink which makes it way easier to get places. We could get to places way faster and there would be less traffic. Also just 5 % of tax would increase which is not that much. It is worth it because we could save time going to places and make it less of a commute.

I think that we should raise our taxes for translink because I think it is worth it to spend a little money to improve our ways of transportation. For example when the new bridge (I think it is the portman bridge) was not yet made I remember that the line was soo long to get on and over the bridge and once the new one was made you can get over the bridge in a snap. That is just one example of the many ways translink can help us with with only add 0.5% onto our taxes. That is only 12$ per month. So in conclusion I vote yes.

My personal opinion is to raise our taxes because we can upgrade so many things that would make us have a smaller commute. I would personally vote yes. Why? You may ask. Firstly, I will vote yes because we are only raising our taxes by .5% which is not a lot.Secondly, we would be abled to get to places way faster and not have to leave really early because of traffic. Lastly, if we don't upgrade anything all you will ever see is cars and your commute will be even longer. This is what I think about the Translink vote. What do you think?

I think they should raise taxes because, firstly we have to be able to build and renew things for transportation. If we didn't have any transportation then we wouldn't have a way to get to work and to go to work. Some people have jobs as construction workers and bus driving so if we didn't have to renew or build anything then they wouldn't earn the money that they need.

I would vote yes because it would help others and help the people in the future. It would be less of a hassle to wait around in traffic and be late for work or school. Also if parents are busy and the child needs to go to school but their house is far away, what are they going to take? The bus, of course. So that's why I would vote yes.
