MONDAY: BOOK CLUB DISCUSSIONS

6/8/2015

Today was a very hot day. It reminded us how important it is to wear sunscreen every day and to drink enough water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated. With the summer in full force, all students should continue to bring a refillable water bottle. (TO BE UPDATED)

1.) MATH 6: Any assigned work.
MATH 7: You will complete the rest of your test tomorrow.

2.) SCIENCE:

Prototype Airplane reports must be handed in as you walk into class tomorrow morning.
Deep Sea Explorer Prezi presentations will be tomorrow. Be sure to talk to your partner about how you are going to present.

3.) LA / NOVELS:

Complete reading up the end of Chapter 12. DON'T FALL BEHIND!
If you have already completed your novels, feel free to read a second novel from the selected novels.
Keep track of your powerful words/phrases, connections, and thinking and learning questions with your stickies! Do this as you read or it will be too much work for you later on.

3.) POST A RESPONSE:

How are your BOOK CLUB DISCUSSIONS going?
What is working well?
What isn't working well?
Give one suggestion on how you think your discussions could be improved?
Ask a person in your group about their response.

"Hey, everyone what do you think whats going to happen in the end of the book?'. Will someone find their family again? Or will someone lose something of theirs? Firstly, our book club discussions for our group,"A Long Walk to Water" is doing really good because, we always conect on the story and on how these things will help us. For example, if one of us makes a connection we then make more connections which sometimes finds the big picture or the idea. Infact, our group is always on topic which makes it easier for us to understand and learn from the story better. Secondly, one of the things we are working well at is, always staying on topic, asking questions, making connections, and telling our thoughts on how each chapter was. Thirdly, one of the things were not doing well as is, making sure we read the chapters we were assigned to read. For example, if one person forgot to read some of the chapters we then cant go beyond and tell our thoughts and what happened in the book, or else it will spoil everything. Lastly, if we could improve our discussions, it will probably be to go beyond rather than saying a simple sentence. As an illustartion, if we just say what happened in the book with only one sentence it not going beyoned. Instead, we need to think deeper so that we can go beyond by having meaningful connections, etc........ Above all, that is what I think our group should work on. What do you think?

in our group discussion I liked how we conversed on our topic and made jokes and laughed at the same time.

I think we should have spent a bit less time on making jokes and more on the book.

My suggestion would be for our group to stay with or ahead of the necessary amount of chapters we needed to read.

@ Billy Bob Mc.Happypants, I agree, some jokes are funny but then they lead to getting off topic and then some people never seem to get back on topic. I also think people should not say ANY spoilers. Do you?

In our group discussion I liked how we were talking about our questions that we have and about our words that we that we did not understand.

I think we could talk a bit more on the recent chapters and not going so fr back into the.

My suggestion is that we could more on the recent chapters more instead of the less important ones.

Our book club discussions where good. Somethings that went will is how my group can easily cooperate and get our messages out easily because we all understand and how we can discuss our book without any arguments. Our book club group all have the same thoughts and ideas so that is a disadvantage also our group can get off tasks easily and start taking about other things. We can work on that except our book we all have the same thoughts so their is nothing really for us too talk about so then we get off task and bored. Maybe we can look deeper into the context we can find something to talk about and not doze off.

Their going good because we are mostly on task and give make each other think hard. What's working well is that we push each other's learning and help each other under stand. What's not working well is that we're not always in task. We could stay on task and not talk about something off topic.

My book club discussions are going great. We discuss what we would do if we were in the characters shoes, we discuss what we think will happen, and we tell about theories of our book which gives us lots of new ideas. But sometimes not everyone is participating which makes it hard to keep the conversation going. I think to improve our group we should contribute to the coversation to keep it going and if we see someone not contributing we will ask them questions so they will have ideas flowing and we can all discuss the book together.

"What did you think when this happened?" My book discussions are ok. I really like the book Iqbal and what its about. I think its a great story and Baia am really enjoying it. A lot of people get off topic and when I asked them questions or they would give a silly or unrelated answer. What works well is when we gets in to a good deep conversation but that seems to be rare in my group. What does not work is when people start telling joke or going off topic because they never seem to get back to the topic we are on and that makes it difficult and frustrating for all the other people in my group. So, how are your group discussions going?

One suggestion I have is to stay on the topic and to EVERYONE reading this DONT GIVE SPOILERS because someone gave me a big spoiler about what happens at the end of my book and it kind of ruined the book for me. In my book discussion we talked about how we enjoyed the book and what will happen next in the other chapters. We mostly stayed on topic and my group talked about gift of words and what we didn't understand. It helped me because when I read through the book I can understand some words and what things mean. The book was really interesting on most of the parts. But some few parts were a little boring. What went well was we helped each other understand words and phrases. What didn't go well was we went off topic for a few seconds. Also not to tell spoilers to. How I can improve is to get caught up in the book so I can explain with the group of what chapter there on.

I really like the book, "A Long Walk to Water" because of it's amazing two-sided storyline based upon two timelines. Like how reading one page of this book pulls you in like a vortex just like reading the summary of the other books. Sadly, this book is one of the shortest books in the class which makes you quite mad when you read the entire book because this book has hooked you so well that you just want to read more of it.

So what worked well during our discussions? Well, what I really like about our group is that they're stating more than one idea that expands on a much bigger idea that shows how much they've read of the book. Most of the times we'd recap the amazing parts of the book that caught all of our attention and what strong connections and GoW's that mean't something really deep behind the story.

What sadly didn't work out as well for us is that sometimes some of our group members are either behind or almost at the beginning of the book which makes it hard for us to recap what we've all read and learned so far. And how I'm ahead of the entire group and almost done my book, there won't be much for me t talk about with my group.

I think one suggestion for my group is to actually read up to the point we're supposed to read up to or try to get beyond that and finish the book if possible because when people read ahead there isn't much for that person to talk about when everyone else is behind where he is by four or so chapters.

The story "Boys without names" the discusion is going pretty good we talk chapter by chapter to descus new people introduced into the story and what are writen on are sticky-notes. If we have questions we talk about it and ask questions about the other questions. But, our group dose gets side tracked a lot but it dose all start from the book. We also need to not talk over others and go in a circle in a neat ordally fashion.

I think our story Iqbal is going great but the group has so much to all about since we are all on different levels of the book. This is also leading to people over sharing on accident and other people knowing too much. I think our group could improve by keeping on track when distracted and also staying on the same page. Eg. Dont go to far, and make sure to read the chapters

@Cookielover, what types of topics would you talk about whenever your group got sidetracked and how did they relate to the book you're currently reading? Also, you have a few typo errors so you might want to fix them up.

My book club discussions are going pretty good. We tried really hard to picture ourselves as the book characters because we are not living in poverty. It was also difficult because people were reading way too far ahead and some people were behind so it was hard to talk about the book. I think to solve this problem people shouldn't read that far ahead and people should be able to read up to whichever chapter mr Hong asked us to read up too.

I think that our conversations are going really well and we go really deep into the context. We usuallt start with saying what is written on our sticky notes then go from there. I think that we should be more focused on the book since our group gets sidetracked a lot and move onto a different topic. Also when a person is talking another person would talk over them when they aren't finished so I think we should have more turns speaking. We should also talk more about our connections because we don't do that as much.

Our book discussions are going really well. We all get along and listen to each others opinion. We are all considerate to each other, even though you might not agree on something. I think my group needs to start working on staying on task. I find that conversations about our book can lead to a different subject.

Honestly, I have had better book discussions. But, what we'll in my group was that some of us had really good thinking and learning questions. Also, the some of the gift of words we had were similar, and we tried to help others understand if we knew what it ment. On the other hand, right after Mr.Hong walked away after pausing our thinking, some unwanted smells, sounds, and personal stories were taking place. To add to that, since I finished the book and some were alittle behind, I could not talk about what I really wanted to talk about. A suddgestion that would improve our discussions is if we are all on the same chapter, so nobody is ahead or behind.

My group's discussion today when pretty good. Overall, we had a decent discussion. Although, I thought that it wasn't as good as it could've been. This is because I think that it would have been better if we already had our thinking and learning questions done. Without thinking and learning questions, there was sometimes a little bit of silence as we were looking for other things to discuss. Other than that, my group discussion was pretty good.

I was absent today but from are previous disscution that we had I think that book club group works very well together because we rarely start talking about things that are off topic but sometimes we do get a little off topic. I think that we could maybe could talk about the chapters in order instead of talking about random chapters.

My book club discussions is going pretty well, some things that are going well is that we all can agree and disagree respectfully. One thing that doesn't go very well is that we get side tracked a lot, we can be talking about one thing and then some how it ends up being about hair, or play land. Maybe instead of all of us blurting our answers out at once we can go in a circle and take turns.

Our book club discussions are going great, everyone has a chance to participate and share their ideas and everyone else is considerate about my ideas even if they disagree with me. I think that the only thing that we can improve on is staying on the topic because while discussing events in the book we can get off task pretty easily.

Do to me being sick and the field trips I've only had one group discussion. It went very well we mostly stayed on topic and gave the book feedback and talk about what we do and don't understand. It really help me understand the book.

Our book club discussions are going good, everyone participates, share their ideas and push each other's thinking. Also respects others thoughts and thinking. However sometimes we get sidetracked and it ends up talking about not relevant topics. I think we should share our opinions by going in a circles and take turns.

Our book Club converstation is a little bit odd because half our group read very far ahead of the other half. So they need to think back to the chaper that we are on. It works well that we can all relate on oppinions about the story. It isnt working well that some of us are very far ahead. I think that we can improve on working together.

In my book club group what's working well is the listening to others and sharing ideas. What isn't working so well is staying on task, we are on task most of the time but if a connection someone has reminded us of something we get off task for s minute but get right back on it. Our discussion could be improved by let's say in your group you don't know hat to say then someone in your group could engage you by asking a question about that start to hear your opinions.

My book discussion was really good, even though i was behind I Learned things about the next chapters that helped me understand the book.
I don t really like this book because of its violence, I think it is kind of disturbing and i would've chose a different book if i had a choice.

I like the book discussions because my group is vey funny and descriptive with what hey say... they make it humorous which is great because sometimes it can get boring.
