NARRATIVE WRITING

Creative Writing

Students started working on their creative writing assignments. We have spent the last week learning about narrative writing and literary elements/elements of a story they will incorporate into their stories. Some of the elements they will include are setting, characterization, theme, plot, conflict, etc. Students have become accustomed the writing process. They finished their brainstorming prior to starting their stories.

IMPORANT:

Parents, student conferences are coming up. It will be optional. We will be using a different format this year. Your child will be creating a presentation they will show you later this month. This will be a display of their learning over the last few months. Should you have any questions after your child shares their learning with you, you have the option of having an online conference. It will not be mandatory. I will send out more information later this week.

LEARNING:
1.) LA/READING:

Reading logs are due anytime this week for the past month.
Read for 30 minutes daily and log the strategies you use.

2.) MATH:

Complete first handout (2 pages - front/back). We will mark it in class tomorrow.

3.) LA/WRITING:

Continue working on your narrative writing assignments (creative writing).
Make sure your setting (time/place) is clear and you introduce the main characters in your introduction.
Try to incorporate 'FLASHBACKS' into your writing.

2.) POST A RESPONSE:

Today, you learned about 'FLASHBACKS' and how to use them within your stories.
LEARNING INTENTION: I can write a paragraph that shows my understanding of how to use 'FLASHBACKS'.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format
2.) Givens/Conventions are paid attention to
3.) Includes a transition word that indicates it is a 'FLASHBACK'. If you are unsure about this, refer to the video posted below.
4.) Your paragraph must clearly show your writing transition from present to past(flashback).
5.) Give one student a suggestion for improvement and edit/revise your own paragraph based on peer feedback or a self-assessment.

Today, we learned about the flashback. It’s a kind of format that often appear in the book. The only problem is, we’re always fucus on the content of the book so we’re not even care about any format. First, let me tell u what is flashback. Flashback is basically to talking about the past. I believe everyone read about someone were talking about their past before and they just didn’t know. Now, I will tell u how to find out the “flashback” in the book. some sentences that start with “when I was little”, “I still remember about”, etc. Learning is always fun. I just know about flashback today. I’d like to learn more tomorrow!!!

in my story I will make I'm wanting to make it like if a friend of mine where there. I think it should be like, back then when he found out of his power he was as strange as a fish but as Keen as a dog. That is a quick example of how I might use it, like to show how the person changed.

A flashback is when a character remembers an important memory that will help the reader understand something from the story.

Example of a flashback: The smell of honey made me remember my most precious moments with my family. I remember that one morning when I woke up to the smell of pancakes and eggs. We used honey since we didn't have syrup for the pancakes. It happened to be the first time I had honey. And honey changed my life...

Flashbacks can basically shape the whole story and the readers knowledge on the situation occurring/that had occurred. It's a way to gi ve us background knowledge without having it be unnatural, though, it can be a lot harder to present in text rather than acting or animations. I prepare to also to have flashback on one of the men wearing a fedora, black suit and a brief case that gives intel on the different perspectives in the story. I personally do not believe in a good side and bad side, their all with reason and if you had grown up like them than it wouldn't seem like the bad side like it is portrayed in the media. For instance let's say a event like the lollipop being bought was told while following the timeline, then I may say something such as; "22194" I hear as the waiter calls, I scurry over checking both sides, I can't let my grandma catch me lacking I had thought, ha. I tried to shake off the blah blah etc that is relevant to that world I am writing about. The flashbacks allow us to know the antagonists of the story are human too and are just like us but hurt without giving a cheesy 10 minute talk during a fight in war. In fact, this leads for these "villians" a purpose without suiciding first, besides, being the villian is just a lot more fun.

Run! Shouted Sophie, she couldn't lose another parent! Images of fifteen years ago whirled through her head. Her mom, fighting the people who had come to their house at night. Her mom, yelling at her to run. Her mom, getting dragged away by them. That was the last time she had seen her. Now, she couldn't let her dad get taken away. She HAD to do something. Spinning, she faced the man who was standing over her dad. She ran and jumped, tackling him to the floor. As soon as they hit the floor, she started punching and kicking every part of his body she could reach. In about 30 seconds, her dad was pulling her off of the man. He was too injured to get up. That's when they heard the siren. The police had arrived. They were safe. Sophie slumped into her dad's arms, exhausted and relieved that she had saved him. Weeks later, she was back in school. Everything was safe. She felt safe enough to enter a race in another city! On the day of the race, she lined up with everyone else participating. As the race started, she heard the crowd roar "Run! Run! Run!"

The excerpt is too little fluency with the amount of words, and the readers are confused on how and the noise are feeling of it(take this with a grain of salt because I'm used to watching stuff not reading).

A flashback is where character in the story happens to think of an event, that happened in the past. It is used to fill in the readers backround knowledge.

Example: I was sad, I didn't know what to do. I remembered what Uncle Greg told me. "You can get sad over something, but you have to move on". I thought about it, stood up and decided to keep on going.

Lead away by my people chanting, Forced to be gone by my own guards. I see myself, asking myself again if thew choice that I had made years and years ago the best choice. If banishing my family for the kingdom's good was the best choice. I see as everything falls, my walls that I kept so hard to keep up. The horrors that I tried so hard to dim. I see as this all falls. I remember the day I decided on this choice. A dark gloomy day when I went to the high council for advice. I remember the looks for horror and betrayal on my family's royal faces as their own guards let them away. I remember all the worst that I had done. I know that this was what destiny wanted me to become. A failure, a try-hard. Someone who just would never get what they want. My family on the other hand was to live the perfect royal life.

(Bruh LI isn't here so I'm just gonna make a random story! Btw ending is really good.)

I was in my room, sharpening my pencil, getting ready for the exam. I stared as the machine whirled and twirled as I put the pencil in.
"Why do I have to take this exam? It's not for grading." A random thought popped up.
"I don't know, maybe because I like challenging myself" replied another thought.
I stare at the pictures on my wall. A picture of a baby being carried by his mother. I remember those times, when mother used to carry me and spin around. She always said,
"When we spin around, don't puke on me, okay?"
And I'd always nod "Otay"
I stare back into my book thinking when will this study ever end when my phone rings.
It's mother.
I pick it up and hear a scream through the phone. I jump in shock as fear crawled over me.
"What is it mother?" I nervously ask.
"You forgot to do the dishes!" She exclaimed.

@Seth - I'm pretty sure after how did the cat get in there, it should be a question mark; and it should be "How did the cat get in here?". Also, it should be "Oh no!", and don't use Idk!, use "I don't know!".
After "Earlier that day" should be a comma; and you need to use speech marks.

A flashback is something that can add more details to your story. It can help build your background knowledge on a character, or help you better understand something. It can even shape a whole story. Example:

"Help!" Yelled Karen! "The monster is chasing me!!!"
"But how did it get there?" Asked John.
Karen thought about earlier that day, when she was eating lunch, and how a witch stopped by her house. She'd said that Karen had to be a vegan or her food would turn into a monster and attack her. Obviously, Karen thought it was a scam, but it turns out it wasn't. If only she'd listened to her.
Now a lion shaped monster was chasing her through the streets, and all she could do was run...

John and his friend Robert were having a Nerf war in the neighbourhood. As John crossed Knight Street, he saw a small object glint in the sunlight. He picked it up, and it was a coin! Upon closer inspection, he realized it dated back to the late 1870s, and though he knew he could sell it for a lot of money, he decided to keep it.

At first, she tricked her mind and told it that everything was alright; as though she never went to that funeral and that Sal was still here, holding her hand tightly, binding it to her chest. But as she looks at the sky, the stars glimmer as it only reminds her of Sal's smile. How Sal would laugh at everything, like when they went swimming and she fell in, or when they were in class and drawing each other as stick figures. As memories begin to flash by, May begins to weep, silently. As she remembered the nights that they argued in the dark. How they always tried to be quiet even though they were upset, how Sal was always the first to apologize. That night, if only they had not gone to that ledge. If May had properly payed attention to the signs around her, if she listened to those who warned her--- maybe Sal would still be here and would soothe her broken heart. May cursed at herself each night, eyebags evident under her florescent eyes. May had believed that all light in her life was gone. Even though Sal's parents understood that it was not May's fault, May could not believe them either, she wanted to make it right, to prove Sal was still alive, but--- May was the first to find her body, and she could no doubt recognize her best friend.

Flashbacks help the reader understand what happened by going back and explaining how or when something started or explaining what the character's life was like in the past.

A flashback in a story can help the reader understand better, they are basically memories of a character in a story or a person in real life. Flashbacks can help someone understand the story better because the memory of that character may have something important that has to do with the story.

Example: As Susan was walking along the snowy sidewalk, she remembered an incident that happened when she was little.

There are many ways to improve on how you write stories. One of them, are flashbacks! Flashbacks is when you back go into the past of perhaps a character part of the story, or a historic event, it's up to you of what you want this flashback to be. Flashbacks are very helpful in your story. It can deepen the readers' understanding of the story, character, etc. When you use flashbacks, using transition words are always useful. Some transition words like "Remember when, back then, years ago" can help you with your writing. An example of a flashback is, "Samantha now knows how to read. However, looking back, she didn't know how to read simple words at all!" Flashbacks can be about different topics and it is all up to you! Now, when you are writing story, don't forget to add a flashbacks because it can really get readers more hooked.

Do you know how to use flashbacks? If you are unsure about it, try using it this way. (example) - Jacob was eating lunch outside. He saw a group of people playing basketball in the court outside. That made him remember the time he still wants to forget... Jacob was playing basketball with his friends at recess time. Jacob had the ball, and when he attempted to shoot it, his ankles suddenly made a peculiar sound and he froze at that moment. Jacob's ankle has been twisted, and the doctor said 3 months is the minimal amount of time till his ankles get completely healed. Although recalling this tragedy, Jacob's face was lively and satisfied than any time. - In conclusion, this is just an example of a flashback, I hope you have a better understanding of flashbacks now.

Using flashbacks in your writing can boost up the excitement and interest for the readers. Flashbacks is when the character recalls a memory. When this happen, us readers would have more background knowledge of what the character has experienced or what basically happened. When the author uses flashbacks, they would usually use transition words like, think back to, remembered when, recall, etc. Flashbacks are commonly used in movies, such as Finding Dory. In this particularly movie, Dory is suffering from short term memory. As she slowly remember her family she was able to travel back o her family. As you can see, without these flashbacks, we would never had known what happen if we had really less background knowledge. Overall, flashbacks can improve our stories and make them more interesting. Nonetheless, the reason why flashbacks are so important is because this literary device helps us better understand more about the characters or story elements. And the purpose of flashbacks is to either move the story forward or to inform us more about the character. A quick example of a flashback; A superhero is struggling to figure out where his enemy is. Suddenly, he remembers his enemy saying “Dark things happen in dark alleys.” The superhero hurries towards the dark hidden alleyway. I haven’t started on my flashback yet but I have a good idea of what I want to include in my story. Overall, flashbacks add a lot more dimension in a story and exposes us to new information that we never knew existed within it.

So if the story went like this: "hey Tommy, I wanna tell you that you saved my life when you chatted with me during school, I was seriously considering suicide if it weren't for you!" It was Lillian's turn to go down the waterslide. She trembled as she gazed at the tiny people way below her. She wanted to turn back and stand on the safe ground but also didn't want to disappoint herself again.

A few years ago...

"Yay!" Lillian shrieked. She had finally grown tall enough to go down the biggest slide at the park. As she wandered up the massive staircase she began to think she wasn't ready for this. When she made it to the top she started to cry, but the kind lady behind her reassured her that she could try again in a few years.

The word "flashback" is straight to the point, its when your brain triggers a memory in the past based on things that may be happening in your life. Like for example, i remember seeing a video on Dhar mann's channel when a grandma is taking her two grandkids to buy a cake for her husbands birthday. when they didnt have enough money to buy the cake. A stranger bought it for them because he had a flashback of back when a man bought a cake for him because it was his moms birthday, the kid asked why did he help them and he pass him a note that said "*something about passing it on*" so when they got back they showed grandpa the note and it was actually the note he gave the stranger about 50 years ago. This is a example of kindness and a flashback.

flashbacks are when a character remembers something from the past and this could happen through dreams, or any time you are unconscious and sometimes conscious. hers an example: one day Jaime's cat climbed a tree and wouldn't come down, his old cat would always do that so in his flashback he saw how to get his cat down by using treats and a ladder. Flashbacks can come through dreams and even when something is about to happen or when something happens.

For example, Jimmy looked at a little child playing in the snow, and remembered that when he was smaller, he did the same things. Flashbacks are really useful and you should also use them!
